102 Things I Didn’t Learn in Architecture School

Nice list, although the original article in Arch Daily says they are 101 the missed one and this is the final count: they are 102. Be sure to read them, they are helpfull and they bring back nice memories.

Even if your boss is your friend he may have to axe you to save his business.

Read the book, On Bullshit, by Harry G. Frankfurt. Carry it with you. It’s pocket-sized.

Do not drink at work and especially do not get toasted around your colleagues under any circumstances.

No matter how highly you may think of yourself you may still be a minion in the eyes of others who hold more power than you.

Once you leave architecture school not everybody cares about architecture or wants to talk about it.

All eating habits and diets acquired during school should be jettisoned.

The hygiene habits you kept in architecture school are inappropriate for real life; bathe regularly and change your underwear.

The rush and exhilaration you experience in studio may be inversely proportional to how much you will enjoy working for a firm.

It’s architecture, not medicine. You can take a break and no one will die.

Significant others are more important than architecture; they are the ones who will pull you through in the end. See 49.

Being smart and having advanced degrees can make you a better designer.

The industry underpays. Push for what you are worth.

Mind your internet traffic at work unless you are certain your office does not have someone monitoring. Of course you should be working every minute, so this goes without saying.

Go home to your family.

Call your loved one’s frequently.

If you are working overtime, the firm buys dinner.*
*Contingent on office policies, of course.

Don’t keep a mayline screwed to your desk. They are not cool and they date you. The same goes for colored pencils.

Get the biggest monitor you can.

Do not, however, ask for two monitors. Even though it makes you look like a bad-ass you will be expected to do twice the amount of work.

Make sure team roles are clearly defined.

Know what your role is.

Be careful with emails. If in doubt, don’t send.

At times respect and civility seem to be scarce commodities in architecture.

Be cautious of “opportunities” that do not pay.

Sometimes the most critical person on your jury might actually be right.

Understand how your office is run as a business and how they go after projects.

It is best to keep your outside activities quiet.

Your boss reads your blog.

Pyromania, car soccer, and other antics you made up to amuse yourself at 3 am are not actually normal. See 49.

There are no architectural emergencies that should make you completely give up your life on the outside. That may have been the ethos in studio, but don’t carry it into the office.

Be suspicious if your firm expects you to work long hours of overtime for no compensation. Be doubly suspicious if they justify it by saying things like, “It’s just part of the learning curve” or “We had to go through this, too.”

If a police officer pulls you over on the freeway for doing 90 mph on a Sunday morning while heading into the office, it’s time to re-evaluate your priorities.

Know who the decision-makers are.

Don’t dress like an intern. See 72.

Read Dana Cuff’s Architecture: The Story of Practice.

Expect to be regarded with suspicion if your undergraduate degree is not in architecture.

Don’t be seduced by mere appearances.

If your firm is outsourcing work to save money, be concerned.

Architecture firms can have multiple glass ceilings. Be aware of them all.

If a principal of a firm sees making coffee or moving boxes as beneath him/her, consider looking for another office.

If a principal doesn’t say good morning when you say good morning to him/her, consider looking for another office.

When firms advertise themselves as think tanks or research labs, ask them specifically what it is that they do. And most importantly, make sure they pay. Well.

If you are invited to be on a jury, don’t trash the student just to make yourself look good or to contradict a rival on the jury. Be constructive and try to help the student. This is the point.

Subvert the signature of the software, unless you consciously want the architecture to convey this signature.

Architects are in a service industry. They provide services to clients.

In proportion to their pay, architects require the most education, most training, and the most exams to become licensed professionals.

Don’t be a Typhoid Mary. When sick, stay home.

Embrace the business-side of architecture.

If you are an architect you should automatically qualify for psychotherapy and medication.

Most architects believe they were destined to become architects because of their early childhood experiences. They showed signs of architectural greatness at a very young age. This is a myth that reinforces an unhealthy hero complex. See 49.

Architecture in the academy is completely removed from the profession. Likewise, the values within the academy are radically different from the values within a firm.

Be cautious about applying theory to space.

Do not take design strategies or operations learned in studio too seriously.

Know the difference between architectural celebrity and actual worth.

Read books with words, not just pictures.

All firms are different. Shop.

To save time, assume your wife is right.

Do not date an architect unless you are certain he/she is able to maintain a healthy life outside of architecture. See 49.

Architects should not intermarry. Inbreeding is not good for the gene pool. See 49.

If you are married when you go to architecture school, studio ends at 7:00.

Do not buy into the fashion of the moment and simply dismiss certain architects without examining them for yourself.

Architects who do not build things also have important things to say and should be listened to.

If your studio instructor is a recent graduate, be alarmed.

Do not obsess about sustainability to the exclusion of other factors.

Renderings done in China are so last year.

If you start a think tank make sure you have some thoughts to put in it.

Read Rem Koolhaas, but do not obsess and fantasize about being him. Delirious New York is still relevant.

Archi-babble does not make you sound cool.

Keep in touch with everyone you know, especially if they aren’t in architecture.

In fact, make friends who are not architects.

Do not wear the same shoes every day, They will start to smell.

Make sure your jeans are up-to-date. No acid-wash. No baggy.

The economically distressed urban zones you can afford while in school are not gentrified just because you and your friends have moved in.

If you must read Italo Calvino, read more than just Invisible Cities.

Expect a period of post-traumatic stress disorder after you graduate. Do not make any important decisions during this time.

Don’t get a dog just because you are lonely.

Architecture is fueled by fetishes—rectilinear designer eyewear, for instance.

When trying to decide if a theory book is good, check the bibliography first.

Listen to your elders. They are wise.

FAIA can mean different things to different people.

If you already have a B.Arch, consider further education in a different field. Your M.Arch. can’t make a real contribution to the field if you’re just showing off software skills.

Always back up your hard drive.

Embrace social media, but don’t be its bitch. Only tweet/post when you have something important to say.

Architecture firms should consider forming economic alliances similar to OPEC.

Even if you don’t like the look of someone’s architecture they may have something valuable to teach you.

Great architecture, like great art, tends to arise from deep psychological issues. See 49.

The eighties and postmodernism were not all bad.

Being avant-garde is a choice that should be evaluated.

Architect’s web pages are often out of control and take too long to load.

In one’s life there are a finite number of all-nighters one can pull. You probably used them all up in school.

Understand the contexts from which modernism arose.

When the economy is good architects can rely on experience to run firms, but when the economy is bad they need advanced business skills they may not possess.

Architecture is dependent on boom and bust cycles.

Good design is not necessarily the most important factor in running a successful architecture firm.

Branding is important.

In a corporate firm, those at the top are not necessarily the best but they may have been there the longest.

Being good at software does not make you a good architect.

Architecture is cliquish.

Many architects do not live in houses designed by themselves or other architects.

Architecture office parking lots communicate success. There should be at least a couple high-end luxury cars. If there are a lot of beaters, be wary. If all cars are beaters, don’t go in.

Be concerned when you are too idle at work.

Ομιλία δασκάλου για την 25η Μαρτίου

Αυτά τα λόγια απηύθυνε ένας φωτισμένος δάσκαλος στους µαθητές του, στο 2ο ΕΠΑΛ Αχαρνών για την επέτειο της 25ης Μαρτίου - δυστυχώς δεν μου έστειλαν το όνομά του και δεν γνωρίζω σε ποιόν να στείλω τα συγχαρητήρια για την ντομπροσύνη και την ομορφιά των λόγων του. Απολαύστε και σεις αυτά που είπε σε 17χρονα παιδιά ... "Σκέφτηκα να σου µιλήσω για τον Καραϊσκάκη, αλλά το µυαλό σου θα πάει στο γήπεδο. Σκέφτηκα να σου µιλήσω για το 21, αλλά ο νους σου θα πάει στην Ορίτζιναλ. Συλλογίστηκα πολύ, για να καταλήξω αν αξίζει να σε ταλαιπωρήσω για κάτι τόσο µακρινό, τόσο ξένο. Δύο αιώνες πίσω κάποια γεγονότα, τι να λένε σε σένα; Σε εσένα που ßιάζεσαι να φύγεις, να πας για τσιγάρο, για καφέ ή για κάτι άλλο. Θα σου µιλήσω λοιπόν προσωπικά. Εγώ ο δάσκαλος που δούλεψα ένα χρόνο σε αυτό το σχολείο και σε δεκαπέντε µέρες φεύγω για αλλού. Σε εσένα που είσαι εδώ ένα, δύο, τρία ή και περισσότερα χρόνια, θα σου µιλήσω σταράτα για να σου εκφράσω δυο σκέψεις µου. Οι µαθητές που συνάντησα µέσα στις τάξεις, οι µαθητές που δίδαξα φέτος στην συντριπτική τους πλειονότητα µε σεßάστηκαν, αν και δεν ανταποκρίθηκαν στις απαιτήσεις του µαθήµατος. Πολλοί όµως από τους υπόλοιπους µαθητές δε µε σεßάστηκαν, µε προσέßαλαν κατ' επανάληψη. Με έργα, µε λόγια, µε ύßρεις, δείχνοντας ένα χαρακτήρα και ένα ήθος Που µε σόκαρε, που µε έßαλε σε µελαγχολικές σκέψεις. Αυτό το φαινόµενο αποδεικνύει πως κάτι σάπιο υπάρχει σε αυτό το σχολείο, πως εκτός του γνωστικού ελλείµµατος Το συγκεκριμένο σχολείο χωλαίνει δραµατικά Και στο ηθικοπλαστικό του έργο, Στη διαµόρφωση δηλαδή των µαθητικών ψυχών και πνευµάτων. Και η ευθύνη για αυτήν την αποτυχία είναι ευθύνη αποκλειστικά δική µας, των δασκάλων σας και των γονιών σας. Δεν έχουµε κατορθώσει να σας δείξουµε πως χωρίς αρχές η ζωή σας αύριο θα είναι µια κόλαση, πως χωρίς όνειρα και στόχους θα χρειαστείτε υποκατάστατα, θα καταφύγετε πιθανόν σε επιλογές που θα σας ξεφτιλίσουν, θα σας κάνουν να σιχαίνεστε τον εαυτό σας, θα σας γεµίσουν τη ζωή πλήξη και κούραση, θα σας γεράσουν πρόωρα. Αν όµως θέλετε µια συµßουλή από ένα δάσκαλο, σκεφτείτε το παράδειγµα του Μακρυγιάννη, Που έφτασε αγράµµατος µέχρι τα πενήντα σχεδόν, για να καταλάßει τότε πως η µόρφωση, η καλλιέργεια ήταν το όπλο που έλειπε από την προσωπική του θήκη. Και κάθισε µε πολλή δυσκολία και χωρίς δάσκαλο και έµαθε πέντε κολλυßογράµµατα, για να µας πει την ιστορία του ßίου του, το παραµύθι της επανάστασης των υπόδουλων Ρωµιών. Αυτό το παράδειγµα είναι για σένα το πιο κατάλληλο, και µπορείς τριάντα χρόνια νωρίτερα από το στρατηγό Μακρυγιάννη να ακολουθήσεις το δρόµο που εκείνος έδειξε, το µονοπάτι της καλλιέργειας, το δρόµο της παιδείας, τη λεωφόρο της προσωπικής σου προκοπής. Δεν είστε σε τίποτε λιγότερο ικανοί από τον µπάσταρδο γιο της καλογριάς, τον Αρßανίτη Γιώργη Καραϊσκάκη. Ήταν κι αυτός αθυρόστοµος σαν κι εσάς, αλλά είχε αυτό που από τα αλßανικά µάθαµε σαν µπέσα, ήταν πάνω απ´ όλα µπεσαλής. Αυτό θα 'θελα να έχετε κι εσείς. Υπευθυνότητα, µπέσα, τσίπα. Να αναλαµßάνετε τις ευθύνες σας, να απεχθάνεστε την υποκρισία, να σιχαίνεστε το συµφέρον, να µισείτε το ψέµα και την ευθυνοφοßία. Η αγάπη για τον τόπο του, η λατρεία για την πατρίδα του ήταν αυτό που χαρακτήριζε τη ζωή του Νικήτα Σταµατελόπουλου, του Νικηταρά. Αγωνίστηκε στη διάρκεια της επανάστασης, συνέßαλε στην απελευθέρωση της πατρίδας του κι έπειτα φυλακίστηκε, Για να χαθεί σ' ένα στενοσόκακο του Πειραιά, σχεδόν τυφλωµένος, πάµπτωχος και εγκαταλειµµένος από όλους, δε ζήτησε τίποτε από την ελεύθερη Ελλάδα κι όταν οι γύρω του τον παρακινούσαν να απαιτήσει από την κυßέρνηση µια πλούσια σύνταξη, απαντούσε πως η πατρίδα τον αµείßει πολύ καλά, λέγοντας ψέµατα, για να µην προσßάλει την πατρίδα του. Είναι δύσκολο, το κατανοώ, το παράδειγµα του Νικηταρά. αλλά νοµίζω πως κι εσείς είστε ικανοί για τα δύσκολα, μπορείτε να ακολουθήσετε το δρόµο της αξιοπρέπειας, Να προσπαθήσετε τίµια και µε αγωνιστικότητα για εσάς και για το µέλλον της οικογένειας που αύριο θα κάνετε. Ξέρω, καταλαßαίνω, αντιλαµßάνoµαι πως σας προτείνω µια διαδροµή ζωής δύσκολη και απαιτητική, οταν δίπλα σας κυριαρχεί ο εύκολος δρόµος των γονιών, των δασκάλων, των πολιτικών, της εποχής στην οποία µεγαλώνετε. Όµως κάθε εποχή ελπίζει στους νέους της, Περιµένει από αυτούς να σηκώσουν ψηλά και µε επιτυχία τη σηµαία του αγώνα και να οδηγήσουν την πατρίδα τους, τον τόπο τους σε καλύτερες µέρες, σε πιο φωτεινές σελίδες. Κι όταν ßλέπω την εποχή µας να µαραζώνει χωµένη στην αλλοτρίωση, να ξεψυχά από την τηλεοπτική ανία, να µουχλιάζει από το κυνήγι της ευκολίας, μόνο σε εσάς ελπίζω, στην ειλικρινή σας διάθεση να αγωνιστείτε, να αντισταθείτε, να πολεµήσετε, να νικήσετε. Antiparos Design Properties for Oliaros

Here are some more of the villas from Athens developer Oliaros‘ project on the island of Antiparos, Greece including designs from Tokyo architects Atelier Bow-Wow, Swiss firm Harry Gugger Studio and Greek firm decaArchitecture (see our earlier story).

Daylight is an important source of well-being for the occupants of a building, as well as a great way to reduce energy usage. In densely populated areas, the sun is easily blocked by surrounding buildings which forces architects and engineers to turn to other resources for natural lighting. Skylights can be used to increase natural light, but they only work for the top floor of a building. So what about the rest of the lower floor dwellers? Are they destined to spend the work week under harsh fluorescent lighting?

Carpenter Norris Consulting of New York, recently installed heliostats on a residential tower in Battery Park with this issue in mind. A heliostat is a sun-tracking mirror that mechanically follows the sun to reflect light into a shaded area. A large, high-quality, roof-mounted circular tracking mirror is connected to a secondary mirror or mirrors, and then directed inside a building with the use of optical cables to allow the sun to shine where it is normally not possible. The technology isn’t particularly new, but with the recent boom in interest in sustainability as well as developments in CNC cutting processes, costs have come down enough to make heliostats a viable option.

Parans is a daylighting company that is working to bring this technology out of the custom-built arena and make it more accessible. Parans manufacturers a series of complex hybrid lighting systems which combine mirrors and natural light, with integral fluorescent lamps to take over on cloudy days. The quality of light has a variation that is not possible in manufactured lighting, which makes it healthier for the occupants as well as the environment. I could go on and on about benefits and uses of a system that can provide natural light to isolated spaces, but just think of museums, hospitals and art galleries.

Απαραίτητη προϋπόθεση για την υγιή ανάπτυξη των φυτών του κήπου μας αποτελεί το ‘'κατάλληλο'' έδαφος. Ως κατάλληλο θεωρούμε εκείνο το έδαφος που είναι γόνιμο, που παρέχει θρεπτικά στοιχεία στο φυτό, του προσδίδει την απαραίτητη υγρασία και τις κατάλληλες συνθήκες αερισμού...χαρακτηριστικά τα οποία καθορίζονται σε μεγάλο βαθμό από την υφή του εδάφους, δηλαδή τη μηχανική του σύσταση ή την κοκκομετρική του σύσταση όπως αλλιώς ονομάζεται.

Πιο συγκεκριμένα, η μηχανική σύσταση του εδάφους αναφέρεται...

Στο χαρακτηριστικό εκείνο του εδάφους που σχετίζεται με το μέγεθος των σωματιδίων(κόκκων) που το αποτελούν και ορίζεται ως η εκατοστιαία αναλογία της άμμου(S),της ιλύος(Si),και της αργίλου(C) στο σύνολο της λεπτής γης.
Άμμος: Παρουσιάζει μειωμένη ικανότητα συγκράτησης νερού και θρεπτικών στοιχείων. Λόγω μεγάλης ταχύτητας διάχυσης του νερού μέσα στην άμμο δημιουργούνται καλές συνθήκες αερισμού και στράγγισης για την ανάπτυξη των φυτών.
Ιλύς: Έχει αυξημένη ικανότητα συγκράτησης νερού αλλά μειωμένη ικανότητα συγκράτησης θρεπτικών στοιχείων. Προκαλεί δυσμενείς συνθήκες αερισμού για την ανάπτυξη των φυτών.
Άργιλος: Παρουσιάζει αυξημένη ικανότητα συγκράτησης νερού και θρεπτικών στοιχείων. Λόγω μειωμένης ταχύτητας διάχυσης του νερού μέσα στην άργιλο προκαλεί δυσμενείς συνθήκες αερισμού για το φυτό.

Κατηγορίες εδαφών ανάλογα με τη μηχανική τους σύσταση...

Τα εδαφολογικά εργαστήρια ταξινομούν τα εδάφη σε 12 κατηγορίες κοκκομετρικής σύστασης, ανάλογα με το ποσοστό συμμετοχής της άμμου, αργίλου, ιλύος στο έδαφος.
Οι 12 αυτές κλάσεις εδαφών καταλαμβάνουν ορισμένη θέση και χώρο σε ένα ισοσκελές τρίγωνο το οποίο ονομάζεται τρίγωνο μηχανικής σύστασης των εδαφών.

Οι τρεις βασικότερες κατηγορίες εδαφών είναι τα αμμώδη ή ελαφρά εδάφη, τα πηλώδη ή μέσης σύστασης και τα αργιλώδη ή βαριά εδάφη, με ιδιότητες ανάλογες των ποσοστών άμμου, αργίλου, ιλύος που περιέχουν.

Πηλώδες έδαφος:    πηλοαμμώδες(Loamy sand)
                               αμμοαργιλοπηλώδες(Sandy clay loam)

                               ιλυοαργιλοπηλώδες(Silty clay loam)
                               ιλυώδες(Silt)

Βελτίωση μηχανικής σύστασης εδάφους...

Τα περισσότερα προβλήματα στην ανάπτυξη καλλιεργειών παρουσιάζονται στα εδάφη με ακραίες συνθήκες μηχανικής σύστασης (αμμώδη-S,LS ή αργιλώδη-C),αλλά και σε εδάφη με υψηλή περιεκτικότητα ιλύος(Si).
Τα αμμώδη εδάφη πρέπει να αρδεύονται επαρκώς και να λιπαίνονται ορθολογικά με συχνές και μικρές δόσεις.
Στα αργιλώδη εδάφη πρέπει να γίνεται κατεργασία του εδάφους(όργωμα),όταν το έδαφος έχει την κατάλληλη υγρασία(βρίσκεται στο ρώγο του) για να επιτευχθεί βελτίωση του αερισμού και της αποστράγγισης.
Μία ακόμη μέθοδος βελτίωσης για τα αργιλώδη και πηλώδη εδάφη αποτελεί η προσθήκη ποταμίσιας άμμου ή περλίτη στο επιφανειακό χώμα.
Γενικότερα, την ανάπτυξη των φυτών ευνοεί η προσθήκη τύρφης(οργανικό υλικό) ή περλίτη στο έδαφος. Τα υποστρώματα αυτά παρουσιάζουν αυξημένη ικανότητα συγκράτησης νερού και θρεπτικών στοιχείων, βελτιώνουν τον αερισμό και την αποστράγγιση και για το λόγο η προσθήκη τους στο έδαφος προτείνεται ως άμεση πρακτική βελτίωσής του.

Διαβάζοντας τις στάχτες του φοινικόδασους της Πρέβελης...

“Των οικίων ημών εμπιπραμένων, ημείς άδομεν”; 1

Κάηκε το φοινικοδάσος της Πρέβελης και, για άλλη μια φορά, αποκαλύφθηκε και συζητήθηκε η πολυδιάστατη παθογένεια της διοίκησης στη σύγχρονη Ελλάδα, από την κορυφή μέχρι τη βάση.
Έμπειροι και καλά ενημερωμένοι ειδικοί ανέλυσαν πολλές πτυχές της προβληματικής κατάστασης που, κάποια στιγμή, θα οδηγούσε αναπόφευκτα στην καταστροφή. Όμως, καταστροφές σαν και τούτη όπως και η παθογένεια της διοίκησης έχουν βαθιές ρίζες στη σύγχρονη Ελληνική ιδιαιτερότητα … που δύσκολα την αντιλαμβάνονται όσοι ζουν σ’ αυτό τον τόπο με πολύ ελάχιστες εξαιρέσεις μερικών φωνών «βοώντων εν τη ερήμω»…. Γιατί τα τέσσερα, από τα πάμπολλα, γνωρίσματα της στα οποία εστιάζω παρακάτω είναι βαθιά εγγεγραμμένα στο ασυνείδητο των κατοίκων, είναι ο τρόπος που ζουν και λειτουργούν ώστε δεν τα αντιλαμβάνονται ακόμα κι όταν στέκονται πάνω στα αποκαΐδια.
Γνώρισμα πρώτο: η προτεραιότητα του ιδιωτικού έναντι του συλλογικού, του ‘κοινού’. Ζούμε σε μια χώρα ιδιωτών, εξ ορισμού εκείνων που ασχολούνται με ιδιωτικές υποθέσεις προς ίδιον όφελος, απ’ όπου απουσιάζουν τραγικά ή έχουν παραιτηθεί από οποιαδήποτε προσπάθεια, οι πολίτες, εξ ορισμού εκείνοι που ασχολούνται με συλλογικές υποθέσεις (της πόλης) για το κοινό καλό. Αυτονόητα, η προστασία των ‘κοινών’ καθίσταται ανέφικτη γιατί απουσιάζουν οι μέτοχοι τους….
Γνώρισμα δεύτερο: η απαξίωση του φυσικού, του αυθεντικού, του γηγενούς και η αποθέωση του τεχνητού, του αλλότριου, του εισαγόμενου. Το πρώτο παραμελείται έως καταστρέφεται, το δεύτερο προστατεύεται, αναπαράγεται και επιδεικνύεται ενώ θα έπρεπε να ισχύει το αντίθετο… Σύμβολα της ‘ανάπτυξης’ στις πόλεις και κυρίως στην ύπαιθρο που οικοδομείται εγκληματικά και βάναυσα είναι η πισίνα, το γκαζόν, ο εισαγόμενος φοίνικας και το τεράστιο 4Χ4. Έχει προχωρήσει τόσο πολύ αυτή η νοοτροπία και έχει επιτελεσθεί τόσο βαθιά πολιτισμική αλλοίωση που ο χωρικός λέει με καμάρι στον επισκέπτη «πήγαινε να φας σ’ εκείνο το εστιατόριο …. έχει και πισίνα»! Ούτε καν του περνά από το μυαλό ότι ο επισκέπτης έχει δει πισίνες κι ότι επισκέπτεται την ύπαιθρο για να δει τη φυσική ομορφιά της … Αλλά η Ελλάδα, από το κύμα μέχρι τη βουνοκορφή, επιδεικνύει έναν απαράμιλλο συνδυασμό βορειο-Ευρωπαϊκού (ή βορειο-Αμερικανικού, όπως αγαπάτε) γκαζόν με τροπικό/Αφρικανικό φοίνικα …. Τον Θεοφράστειο, τον ενδημικό και μοναδικό, φοίνικα της Κρήτης … τον καίει …. Στα ‘αγροτουριστικά’ καταλύματα και στα ‘αγροκτήματα’ (διάβαζε εξοχικά κέντρα), που έχουν επιδοτηθεί από την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση (για την ενίσχυση της υπαίθρου), χρησιμοποιούνται εισαγόμενα υλικά κατασκευής, εξοπλισμός και φυτά που για την ποικιλότητα των τελευταίων κρατά ακόμα μια πρωτιά η χώρα …. Έτσι, επιδοτείται η υιοθέτηση εισαγόμενων αξιών …
Γνώρισμα τρίτο: η καθολική απουσία νοοτροπίας συντήρησης κυρίως των κοινών πραγμάτων, πρόληψης και πρόνοιας για το μέλλον. Πλατείες, δρόμοι, πεζοδρόμια, δημόσια κτήρια και έργα φτιάχνονται και εγκαταλείπονται. Μετά από χρόνια φαντάζουν ρακένδυτοι επαίτες μπροστά στα διατηρημένα ιδιωτικά έργα κάθε είδους. Οι φυσικοί πόροι – γη, νερό, έδαφος, ενέργεια – σπαταλούνται ως εάν είναι ανεξάντλητοι και δωρεάν, ως εάν δεν θα υπάρξουν μελλοντικές, άγνωστες ακόμα, ανάγκες που θα πρέπει να εξυπηρετήσουν. Αλλά κι εκεί όπου υπάρχει σπανιότητα πόρων, πάλι κυριαρχεί η κατασπατάληση τους, που συχνά ευνοείται από παροχή εύκολου χρήματος, … ΔΕΝ προσέχουμε ακόμα κι όταν ΔΕΝ έχουμε ….
Γνώρισμα τέταρτο: οι προστατευόμενες περιοχές, θεμελιώδη παγκόσμια ‘κοινά’, αλλά και όλες οι περιοχές φυσικού κάλλους, παραμένουν απροστάτευτες από τον καθ’ ύλη αρμόδιο προστάτη τους, το κράτος. Αντίθετα, ο προστάτης είτε άμεσα, με ειδική νομοθεσία, είτε έμμεσα, κλείνοντας τα μάτια σε κάθε φύσης παρεκτροπές και παραβάσεις νομοθεσίας, ευνοεί τη χρήση τους από ιδιώτες για δραστηριότητες που κάλλιστα μπορούν να αναπτυχθούν και σε ένα τεχνητό ή τεχνητά ‘φυσικό’ περιβάλλον. Οι φυσικές περιοχές προσφέρουν δωρεάν εντυπωσιακό ‘σκηνικό’ σε ακριβοπληρωμένες χρήσεις και δραστηριότητες που αμφίβολο είναι αν αποφέρουν ανάλογα έσοδα στον κρατικό κορβανά … Μέσα από τέτοια βιώματα, ο Έλληνας θεωρεί αυτονόητο ότι μπορεί να πατά οπουδήποτε σε μια ευαίσθητη περιοχή (άσχετα αν καταστρέφει πόρους που πήρε εκατομμύρια χρόνια να φτιαχτούν), να διανυκτερεύει μέσα σε προστατευόμενες περιοχές και φυσικά, αν έχει την οικονομική δυνατότητα, να κτίζει από καλύβες μέχρι πολυτελείς βίλλες …. Μπορεί να πληρώσει 5 και 10 Ευρώ για να νοικιάσει όχημα ψυχαγωγίας, να πιεί καφέ ή να φάει (στο εστιατόριο που είναι μέσα στην προστατευόμενη περιοχή φυσικά) αλλά θα αρνηθεί, και θα επικαλεστεί αναφαίρετα δικαιώματα του, αν του ζητηθεί να συμβάλλει με 50 λεπτά για εισιτήριο εισόδου σε προστατευόμενη περιοχή ….
Με τέτοια κυρίαρχα γνωρίσματα της σύγχρονης Ελληνικής ιδιαιτερότητας, γνωρίσματα βαθιάς και ύπουλης κρίσης αξιών, είναι πραγματικά τυχαίο το ότι δεν έχει ακόμα αφανιστεί, αν κι έχει βαριά λαβωθεί, ο ανυπολόγιστος φυσικός και πολιτιστικός πλούτος αυτού του τόπου. Και ενόσω διατηρούνται, προσφέρουν πολύτιμο προσάναμμα, και κυρίως πρόσχημα, για πολλές φωτιές ακόμα …… Μόνη οδός διαφυγής από αυτή την κρίση δεν είναι άλλη παρά η παιδεία, τόσο η επίσημη όσο, κυρίως, και η βιωματική. Κι αυτό μεγαλώνει ακόμα περισσότερο τις ευθύνες όλων μας να πολεμήσουμε τη συνήθεια της αθλιότητας και να ανασύρουμε από την αχρηστία τη συλλογικότητα. Γιατί πόσο ακόμα θα μπορούμε να τραγουδούμε όταν θα καίγεται το σπίτι μας;
