A row has broken out over the return of elephants to the British circus after almost ten years.

3 elephants are to make their debut at the big top at the Great British Circus this Friday, but not every one is pleased.

Campaigners claim that it isn't natural for elephants to be kept by circuses, and the RSPCA wants a ban completely on the use of wild animals in circuses.

The Great British Circus, however, claim it's doing nothing wrong.

The circus based in Lincolnshire, is one of the country's biggest circuses. Bosses of the circus say their animals are quite happy and are well looked after and think people DO want to go to the circus to see them.

Dog owners in Nottinghamshire are being warned not to overfeed their pets by vets, as it may leave their dogs with serious health problems.

It comes after the news of a Labrador weighing about 8 stone (51 kilograms) was brought in to Ruddington Veterinary Centre last week.

The Labrador, Louie, has now been put on a strict diet to control his weight.

Veterinary nurse Lisa Hyde said “It’s potentially life-threatening to him. It’ll probably reduce his life-span by about five years if he carries on the way he’s going.”

“He could develop joint problems, arthritis. It’s going to put a big strain on his heart and he could also develop conditions like diabetes.

Julian Gunning, 49, was killed at a crossing near Christ’s Hospital railway station in Horsham, Sussex, on Monday.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said the driver of the train tried to make an emergency stop.

The family said in a statement: “They were crossing the railway line carefully at Christ’s Hospital only to realise that the dog had unexpectedly stopped on the track.”

The statement added: “Julian was a devoted family man whose untimely death has devastated his whole family. They have asked to be left alone to come to terms with their tragic loss.”

Mr Gunning’s death was not being treated as suspicious and the coroner has been informed.
