A real Cowgirl??

So the story is that Regina always wanted a horse and after realising that her parents weren't prepared to give in and get her one she trained her cow Luna to showjump instead!! Pretty amazing and just shows how smart and friendly cows are! Well done Regina and Luna :)

It’s official - Cat owners are friendlier than dog owners!!!

Cat owners have often been viewed as more reserved, fussier and not as friendly as dog owners. However, recent research from the University of Maryland has found than when cat owners visit online pet communities (such as our very own PetTalk) they are more likely to make friends with other members of the community than their dog owning counterparts. In fact, dog owners not only initiate fewer friendships but tend only to make friends with owners of similar breeds to their own dog suggesting they are the fussier pet owners.

As a dog owner I'm not sure I agree - that said, I think I'll go make a few more friends just to be sure. Who knows I might even cross over and extend an invitation to a cat owner......

Amazing what animals do

I received the following photos in an email this week. They're Norbert Rosing's striking images of a wild polar bear coming upon tethered sled dogs in the wilds of Canada 's Hudson Bay.

The photographer was sure that he was going to see the end of his dogs when thempolar bear wandered in.

It's hard to believe that this polar bear only needed to hug someone!

The Polar Bear returned every night that week to play with the dogs.

Just goes to show how amazing animals are!!

We are delighted to welcome Rachael Gordon BS, MVB on board as our resident pet vet.

Rachael hails from Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.A. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from Rutgers University in 1993, she stayed on for three years as a researcher in animal nutrition. Encouraged by Conor McMahon, MVB, MRCVS, Rachael applied to his alma mater, UCD, and arrived on Irish soil in 1996 to enter their program in veterinary medicine. After qualifying in 2001, she spent four years working in small animal practice in both Dublin and Kildare. Then, in 2005, Rachael joined Conor in opening Animals First Veterinary Hospital.

Aside from her veterinary work, Rachael enjoys gardening, cooking, painting, agility, and spending time with her menagerie. During your visit to Animals First, you may meet her three dogs – Chloe, Bijoux, and Harvey. Her dogs are active members on PetTalk and would love to make friends with your pets! You may also hear her parrots, Picasso and Ted.

Hey Everyone

Sorry for the late post (and the lack of them this week) but this is worth the wait I promise.

Last week Jon told me he put all the pet photos under 1 link so that we could look at them all together ......anyway while I heard what he said I didn’t really hear it if you get me [sorry Jon :)]. So I was looking at the pictures of our new pet friends that joined today (a big hi and welcome to Chelsea, Pumba & Jake) when Jon helpfully pointed out “You know you could look at all the photo’s if you just clicked on Pet Photos”! So an hour later after fawning over 13 pages of gorgeous pet pics I figured I should make sure you all know about the link http://www.pettalk.ie/pets/all-photos. I’ve included a pic so you know where to find it in future. Be warned though there are lots of pics and it’s quite addictive!

Pet of the Expo 2010

And the Winner is...

After a very exciting weekend of voting and 21 fabulous competitors we're delighted to announce Mollie as the PetTalk Pet of the Expo 2010 with 113 votes. A huge congratulations to Mollie and her owners on their well deserved win.

Honourable mentions must go to Pogo (105 votes) who came a very close second and Joey (28 votes) in third. Well done to all who took part and thanks to those of you who voted making it a very exciting contest.

A reminder that we run a pet of the month competition and with 3 1/2 weeks left the July contest should be a good one.

Pet Expo Day 3

So many mixed emotions - I'm exhausted delighted, sad, proud! I could stay at this stand for another week meeting people but at the same time I wish it was 7pm so I could go home and collapse into bed!

I'm hoping to get all of today's photos online now but if we've missed your pet out do get in touch. A reminder that Pet of the Expo is closing tomorrow at 7pm so in the meantime keeping voting an adding your pets. We're so happy that so many of you have taken an interest so far!

If we've been chatting to you over the past few days do feel free to drop us a line and give us any suggestions for what you'd like on the site (e.g. features we can add over the coming months etc.).

We're delighted to also announce that we have a resident vet joining us here on PetTalk to help with all your pet related questions on the forums. Watch this space for the official announcement but let's just say we're more than delighted to have her on board and know she'll be an amazing asset to the community.

Thanks for making our weekend at petexpo so memrable and worthwhile. I look forward to seeing you all online

Pet Expo day 2

So we're nearly finished at the RDS on day 2 of the Expo and we think it went well - how about everyone else?

Again we met some gorgeous pets and their owners and got to know lots of other great exhibitors round about.

We've lots of pics to post today - have fun checking them out - take particular note of Jonathan's tanned appearance at 10 am this morning - he's well pleased!!!! ;-)

Remember that the Pet of the expo vote closes at 7pm tomorrow evening so get creating your pet profiles and canvassing for votes before then - Mollie is our current leader and is looking as cute as ever!

If we've uploaded a photo of your pet and you'd like an emailed copy just drop me a line on amanda@pettalk.ie and we'll send it to you next week when everythings calmed down ;-)

Wow what a day - we're only making our way home from Dublin now and I'm typing this in the car in the hope that we can get to bed once we get home :) I've never seen so many gorgeous pets or met so many nice people before - here's hoping the rest of the weekend is as good!

Pet Expo - Day 1

Well, the first day is well underway at this stage. We met lots of lovely pets and their owners today. Here are some of the photos we took along the way - enjoy!

Exhausted doesn't even describe us this evening and the expo hasn't even started :-) It's all good though!

We've had a great day setting up the stand even if it was hotter than Hawaii in the Shelbourne Hall at the RDS!! We've nearly got the decoration part of the stand done with only a few minor additions tomorrow. I'll have Amanda around tomorrow for her seal of approval but she's impressed with my designs so far - see the evidence of my hard work above!! Seems to be alot of hard work going on from all the exhibitors as we saw some really interesting stands being constructed today.

I think it's going to be a great weekend so if you're in the Dublin area do drop in - I'd advise wearing shorts though! Oh and check out www.petexpo.ie for info on bringing your dog along!

Pet Expo 2010

It's the final countdown to Petexpo 2010 in the Rds in Dublin - 4 days left and we can't wait!!! Our stand is in the main hall near the entrance to the outdoor retail area so be sure to look us up!

We've just collected some amazing banners (thanks Andy at CSL) and I've posted a sneak peak of one of the graphics for you to click on above (the image itself is made from all the gorgeous pet photos that you've uploaded to the site). The full print which you can see on our stand shows the individual images really clearly. If you can't make it to the expo and fancy a look drop me a line on amanda@pettalk.ie and I'll happily email you a copy.

We'll be at PetExpo for the full show - Friday through Sunday so do come and say hi and if you're bringing your pet along then be sure to call over as we'll be setting up pet profiles throughout the weekend. We'll also be holding a PetTalk Pet of the Expo Competition with a fantastic prize for the winning pet. All you have to do is create a profile for your pet between Friday and Sunday (July 2nd-4th) and the pet with the most votes wins. Simples :)

New Pet Age Calculator

I always thought it was as simple as multiplying your dogs age by 7 - until I decided to do some research for the pet age calculator. It's actually really complicated - but I'm delighted with how it turned out. so much so that I then went and researched the cat "formula" and added that too :)
