Good News/Bad News

Where have I been for the past 6 months? Well, I've been feeling a bit stagnant on the blogging front for a long time now. I started P for Pearl when I was 17 after being really inspired by all the wonderful blogs I read like Rhiannon's & Tavi's blogs. Ever since, this blog has helped me more ways that I can imagine. I got to meet so many wonderful people, made amazing friends, crazy blogger events and even got my first job as a graphic designer through this blog. For that I'll be ever so grateful. I'm glad I took the step to blog but now I feel like things need to move on. I'm definitely not the same person I was when I was 17. My fashion choices, likes and dislikes, routines - all of it has evolved so much that I felt stuck in a rut. P for Pearl remains an archive of my younger self and that's why I won't be deleting this blog but keeping it as a remembrance. I've invested so much time and effort writing blog posts and photographing outfits and my travels that I feel it would be unfair to get rid of it all.

The good news is I've started a new venture. A blog called Belle Fleur. Something that I've been developing since a year now. A blog that is a fresh start and wholly mirrors my personality and aesthetic in every way possible. I'm still the same just a tad bit different. There are two new posts on the blog. I hope you will follow me on this new adventure. A new life in New Zealand and my love for eco-friendly living. You can expect a lot more heart to heart conversations, my experiences living in a new country, movie and tv recommendations as well as some of the same things that I used to blog about on here like beauty reviews and outfit posts. This time I'm blogging because I want to and not out of necessity. It's always been that way for me and I wouldn't wish it any other way. How To Pack Your Life In A Suitcase

For a person who hates packing, the process of moving to New Zealand changed me. I was a lot more organised and looked up packing hacks, made lists and researched a whole lot before packing my belongings. I had to part with a lot of my things and stick to stuff that I NEEDED and found absolutely necessary for my year abroad. Along my packing process, that lasted a whole week, I learnt that it's ok to leave some things behind and move forward. Parting with a majority of your wardrobe can be scary. If you're a recent high-school grad moving to college or if you're someone like me moving to a whole new country, you might find this helpful. I made sure that I packed everything I needed within my baggage limit! Impossible? It's easier than you think!

2015 : Free Wallpaper

With a new year comes new possibilities. Yeah I just thought of that and it sounded cleverer in my head but anyway, how's 2015 treating everybody so far? Mine's been beyond excellent. Little joys like going grocery shopping at the local superette, swimming in the ocean or just making new friends at a concert (haven't you seen my Instagram lately? tsk!) just makes me so grateful for everything. I've been incredibly lucky since I moved to New Zealand. I've seen most of the North Island plus an impending trip to Hobbiton this weekend. I hope everyone's having a great January and thanks for sticking around!

I MOVED TO NEW ZEALAND

It's been quiet here on the blog primarily because I was busy MOVING TO NEW ZEALAND. If you've been following my Instagram closely, you'll notice the sudden surge in landscape pictures owing to goddamn beautiful NZ. I'll be studying Business for a year in Auckland. It's been 2 weeks so far & I'm soaking in every minute of every day. It was tough to part with most of my things but I'm glad that I get to start afresh with basically a capsule wardrobe. Don't worry though, I'll be back with some posts & of course a LOT of travel posts.

I feel the itch to celebrate autumn now that it's October (My favourite / birthday month) but with the weather being anything but autumnal I can keep living vicariously through this wishlist here. Have a gander at it, will you? I predict denim dresses are the new dark floral dresses this fall. Denim is making a comeback and the 90's kid in me cannot be happier.
It's quite apparent that I have a soft spot for whimsical, novelty bags with my Pinterest board "Arm Candy," It's impractical, yes but isn't it too darn cute?
MAC is killing it with the new Rocky Horror Picture Show collaboration (pun unintended) but my mind is set on Lorde's Pure Heroine lipstick. I'm all for plums & dark colours this fall. Quite apparently.

Coloured Hair Must Haves

Coloured hair can be a hassle most of the time. Direct sunlight, swimming pools, sulfate shampoos are not your best friends when you have to maintain coloured hair. Back to the process of colouring, my friend, who's familiar with the process, did it for me. I'll spare you the fuzzy pictures but I got 2 bleachings done consecutively. I don't really know the specifications but if you're new to this (like me) I'd suggest to get a professional or an experienced friend to bleach and colour your hair. After an hour or so, she coloured my hair with Manic Panic's Ultra Violet, that I bought off Amazon. That was the easy part. Maintaining coloured hair is a constant struggle for anyone. I noticed my hair colour dissipating eventually and after recolouring numerous times, I've learnt the hard way that coloured hair is difficult! So I bought products that were literally my hair saviours.

THE BODY SHOP'S BANANA CONDITIONER

Holy smokes, this conditioner saved my dry hair from being doomed forever & I'm not even exaggerating. Firstly it smells just like bananas and honey with a hint of coconut. I'm not the biggest fan of coconut scented products but this is a sole exception. I think I might just grab the shampoo as well.

INGREDIENTS:-
1 Banana + 1 tsp honey + 1 tsp almond oil

I decided to make my own hair mask based on this conditioner and would you believe it? It works. I mixed in all the ingredients and applied it to the roots and along the length of my hair. An hour later, I washed my hair with water and I was left with amazingly soft hair.

Purple Haze

It's no secret that my favourite colour is purple so naturally I dyed my hair purple! I had been dying (pun intended) to colour my hair a wacky colour since forever and when I had the chance I sure did. Something to check off the bucket list. I was a bit sceptical about colouring my entire hair purple so I decided to do a purple ombre instead. A weird thing I've noticed is that my hair looks navy blue in florescent light but as my friends say, "You got two colours for the price of one!" I will definitely write a post soon all about the process but for now I can't help but look at my psychedelic, technicolor hair all the time!

♥ I'm absolutely in LOVE with Alex McLean's aerial photography. From the picturesque valleys of Italy to the arid landscapes of Arizona, he's got an amazing eye for patterns & symmetry. Promise you will get lost in his rabbit hole of a website. The second picture reminds me of this Kylie Minogue video!

♥ Speaking of symmetry and conciseness Andrew Myers' photographs are of a similar vein. Some naughty, some nice, some precise. Head to his website to check out more of his work.

♥ As a graphic designer,(I never thought I'd say that but yeah!) I'm always looking out for inspiration and when I bumped into this lovely site called the pattern library, I knew I'd struck a gold mine.

Mangalore : The Old & The New

Early May, I was at my grandparent's place in Mangalore. They sort of live in the outskirts of the actual Mangalore city. Frequent power cuts are the norm here as much as a snake bite. As a kid, this place was like a slice of heaven to my city bred feet. Playing out in the garden with my cousins, pulling water out of the well every morning till my palms were raw & my ribs hurt in the most uncomfortable way, my grandfather who would climb the nearest coconut tree and cut open a coconut whenever I wanted one, these were the things I took for granted as a mischievous, spoilt kid. Now as an adult, the very things that alluded me seem to be problems. As I became more so dependent on technology, I tried avoiding the yearly trips to Mangalore partly because I liked my cocoon of technology and because of the almost 24 hour bus ride there which I'd rather avoid. But this time I decided to take the plunge and visit my ailing grandfather & some of my relatives. Here are some of the photos I took while I was there.

Meet my paternal grandmother, Gracy, who lives in Bombay but visited her homeland after 5 years. This photo was taken at her sister's son's housewarming party.

Spot the mangoes!

This decrepit house belonged to my great-grandmother's cousin and his wife. They both lived well into their nineties.

This creek which passes by my great-grandmother's house looked especially beautiful in the afternoon sunlight. Fun fact: When I was 8 or 9 years old, I fell flat on my face in this very creek. I remember my cousin, who was fishing, drop his net and pull me out of the water before I drowned. My mother enrolled me into swimming classes as soon as we returned home.

This is my cousin, Joshua, who is all of 3 years old and was immensely fascinated with my camera. I clicked this photo when he least expected it.

How To Make Vintage Work For You (Part 2)

In the second installment of 'How To Make Vintage Work For You' I'll delve into little tips & tricks that I use to take vintage clothing and bring it back to the 21st century. Because let's face it, some clothes look a bit old fashioned, but with a little alteration here and there you can give it your own personal touch. It's important to take care of vintage as well. Keep reading to know how!

✿How Do I Personalise Vintage?✿

♥ Got it, Flaunt It Firstly, It is imperative to know your body type. Know what accentuates your body and what looks good on you. Some things might look good on the hanger but may not look good on you & vice versa. You can't possibly alter vintage clothing without knowing what looks good on you!
♥ Awkward Sleeves Most vintage blouses or dresses have sleeves that are at awkward lengths. Somewhere between 3/4th sleeves and cap sleeves You can either try rolling the sleeves like you would do to a shirt or cut the excess fabric.
♥ 80's Shoulder Pads Shoulder pads are usually sewn to the garment with a few stitches. So just use a seam ripper to remove those stitches. Sometimes shoulder pads are sewn between the lining and the garment itself. For moments like these, I'd advise you to take help from a skilled tailor. I accidentally ruined a vintage blouse once when I tried to cut open the lining with a scissor and cut the blouse instead. Lesson learnt!
♥ Hem Away Sometimes vintage dresses or skirts look drab or old fashioned but hemming it to suit your height and proportions really makes a world of a difference. I altered this vintage dress to suit my height.
♥ Recycle/ Reuse There are times when you love the fabric of a certain vintage outfit but it's certainly unwearable. Here's when you have to be a little creative. Convert them into cushion covers, table cloths, cloth bags or even cover your journals with it. The possibilities are endless!
♥ Buttons Sometimes you'll find blouses with unique buttons but the garment itself cannot be salvaged. You can rip the buttons out and use them for another blouse or sew it onto the front of a plain skirt!
♥ Add Trims I like to add lace or sequinned trims to plain tops along the sleeves or collar to make them unique. You'll find loads of quirky trims in the market. Here in India, It's not uncommon to find sari trims. Imagine all the beautiful things you could make with them!
♥ Make Vests & Pinafores Sometimes, you'll find stuff with exaggerated shoulders on a beautiful blouse and the like which don't really fit into today's fashion. Maybe if you're at NY Fashion week, just maybe. At times like these I prefer hacking off the sleeves & wearing them as vests. Poofy sleeves on vintage dresses can be hacked to make cute pinafores to layer with a collared blouse!
♥ Belts There's nothing a good slim belt can't fix. Whether you're short or tall, slim belts suit every body type. Wide elastic belts from the 80's work well with vintage dresses too. I made a post about how transform a (not-so-vintage) shift dress where belts play a prominent role. The idea is the same though!
♥ Layer Vintage items are amazing to layer with too. Wear a vintage blouse with an interesting print like a jacket over a tank top or inside a knitted sweater like I did here.

How to Make Vintage Work For You (Part 1)

I've often got emails for advice on vintage clothing & accessories. So I thought I'd create a compilation of posts with tips on how to make vintage stuff work for you. This post has been in my drafts folder for a couple of months now. I would have random spurts or eureka moments and keep adding things to this post. So much so that I had to break it down into several posts! (I plan to keep it a two-three part series) A crash course of sorts. Some may be obvious, some may be helpful.

I wear hand-me-downs from my aunt or mom but I've also discovered neat vintage/second hand items at thrift markets. It isn't everyone's cup of tea but I find that vintage really does hold a place of it's own.

✿Why Vintage?✿

If you've read my blog, you will notice that I wear a lot of vintage clothes. I have no idea how and when I started preferring vintage. As far as I can remember I was always fascinated with Edwardian fashion & 20's flapper style. Eventually, it evolved to loving more recent fashion like in 60's movies and the "Ye-Ye" music scene. I remember being a curious 9 year old, going through my mother's closet when she was away (Sorry Mom!) or my aunt's vast shoe & clothing collection from the 70's and 80's. My grandmother was a seamstress and would sew clothes for my aunt out of fabrics my grandpa sent from abroad. The time and effort she took to make those dresses, in a way, made me appreciate fashion in a whole different way.
In 2009, I began reading blogs which also showcased vintage clothing. Not only as an inspiration but a way of life. Kudos to those who live the vintage life! There are times when I happen to wear all vintage & I wonder if I've overdone it. Still, I love the way pre-loved clothing looks and feels. There are so many reasons that people where vintage.
♥ Quality The quality of clothes in the past is unlike anything we see today. Designers made limited pieces and stuck to it. Skilled tailors emulated them making fashion more accessible to the masses. The care and concern taken to make these garments resulted in gorgeous silhouettes. Quality was always more important than quantity. The fact that these garments continue to survive in our time is proof enough. Now, clothing or footwear from a high street brand barely makes it to two years without completely falling apart.
♥ Cheap and Chic Vintage is cheap for the most part. The thrill of finding something of great quality which doesn't cost an arm and a leg is just plain amazing.

Long time no see! Believe me, I have a good reason for being M.I.A. (not the singer, although I wish) from the blog.
As you can see from the gravely exposed pictures, it is hot as hell in Mumbai. I literally have to think a million times before layering because I'm just so prone to it. But I love how this crop top works with this dress. The dress I'm wearing underneath is super versatile on it's own. It fits like a glove & goes with every skirt I own. I featured it more than a year ago in a post.

The project I've been blabbering about since February is that I'M FINALLY GOING TO OPEN AN ONLINE VINTAGE STORE! You have no idea how difficult it was to just tell you guys before anything was even solid & I'm quite proud of myself to say the least. I tend to make a lot of empty commitments (It's a problem) & I needed to be absolutely sure that I wouldn't screw it up this time. The idea struck me around mid-Feb when I had too many clothes & accessories which I barely wore and in perfectly good condition. They were too good to just throw away. So I decided to make another Blogger blog store with a Paypal system. After two months of coding & developing I made it precisely how I wanted it to be, except for one major flaw. I wanted the grid layout that most online stores have but for some reason I couldn't apply it to Blogger. Now I had this Blogger theme which I spent all this time on but it HAD to be perfect. Incidentally, I discovered Storenvy about 15 days ago. Storenvy is free and is everything I could wish for & more. It took me a while to get used to it but I'm 90% done with coding and developing the store & I'm pretty satisfied with how it looks right now. This crop top might probably be in the store although I'm contemplating to keep it for my own! What do you guys think? Keep or sell?

The Home Label | 4 Uses for a Jewellery Box

It's technically summer here in India but in my head, I'm the mood for Spring! Spring time calls for fresh flowers (groundbreaking!), iced lollies, pretty pastels & of course spring cleaning. So when 'The Home Label' decided to send something over from their Spring/Summer line of products, I couldn't resist! Here's quick history lesson about 'The Home Label' :

The new line looks so fresh and summery with hints of an old-timey, vintage influence. The Great Gatsby jewellery box seemed like the perfect fit for me especially since The Great Gatsby is one of my favourite books!

I definitely wasn't disappointed when it arrived home. Tightly packed in polystyrene and plastic wrap, 'The Home Label' really makes sure that nothing is broken in transit, which I was definitely nervous about since the box itself is made primarily out of glass. I absolutely adore the worn out mercury finish on the bottom of the box as well! The most obvious useor a jewellery box is jewellery, of course, but I figured that it could definitely have a variety of uses.

Blog Business Cards!

If you follow me on Instagram you might already know that I made some blog business cards. Never did I think that I'd need to buy business cards for my blog! I still can't believe the opportunities I get via this blog plus the amazing people & fellow bloggers I've met so far. You never know who you bump into and who you can connect with. There is no guarantee that a person will remember your name & blog URL. Also, it's a great way to kind of introduce your blog aesthetic to someone new & maybe show-off some of your design skills!
I Google-searched business cards online and Vistaprint popped up. It's a simple site with easy directions. You can use some of their design templates and insert your own text or upload your own image. I like that Vistaprint is quite easy to navigate and that they provide a digital template for your card so you don't have to worry about your card's dimensions & important stuff being cut out. So after making a couple of back & front templates, I asked friends for their opinions and I settled on the final design. I was quite proud of it to say the least!
I ordered 100 cards just to be on the safe side but these turned out so great I might order some more. I paid about ₹350 inclusive of shipping which I guess is a bit expensive for 100 cards but I'm quite happy with the quality. Delivery was pretty quick too, only took 2 days!

Things I'm Obsessing Over #5

♥ This American Highschool Home Ec manual from the 1940's is filled with some quite outdated ways to dress up but some of the tips still ring true today, like this dress remix.

♥ Besides jarring colour schemes and poor blog design there's something that really gets on my nerves and that is incorrect grammar or just too much repetition for that matter. We've all had those moments but The Hemingway app is a good place to start. All you have to do is copy paste whatever you've typed and the app highlights things like a hard to read sentence or too many adverbs. This one's a lifesaver.

♥ This interview of Sarah Jessica Parker in her New York brownstone is a must-see for every SATC fan. I love the little distractions in between questions & how she prances about her apartment which reminded me so much of Carrie!Continue reading »

My Hair Styling Routine

In school, I never really cared that much about my hair. Our school's policy was that you HAD to oil your hair everyday & wear it in two plaits or two pony tails unless you had short hair. My mother made sure I didn't grow my hair too long considering she had to deal with two fussy daughters almost every morning. Oil my hair with coconut oil & then proceed to comb through my thick,curly, tangle-prone hair. Fast forward to today almost everything about my hair routine has changed drastically. Years of being subjected to the coconut oil treatment made be completely averse to it. The mere smell of coconut oil makes me gag which is quite ironic for a South Indian like myself. We literally use coconut oil for everything including food! It's just something that I don't find pleasant. Granted that it makes your hair shiny and healthy but it takes so long to completely get rid of the oil and smell even after shampooing. It's kind of funny to see numerous beauty websites talk about the beauty world's obsession with coconut oil recently. Hair oil has been a tradition for centuries! Anyway, I haven't used hair oil since I graduated from school & I guess it's been the best thing to happen, at least for me! I've found alternatives to adding shine to my hair by using a serum with Grapeseed and Avocado oil amongst the ingredients & my hair spray which contains Moroccan oil.

I've tried many shampoos in the past and nothing really seemed to work for my hair. A friend of mine recommended The Herbal Essences range of shampoos which she swears by so I decided why not? It was pretty cheap and decently priced. I bought the Totally Twisted shampoo and conditioner and boy do I get the hype. There's something in this that just works so well with my hair. My hair felt a lot smoother & most importantly, my curls looked more defined! This was about a year ago & since then I've gone through 3 bottles of this shampoo! The conditioner though takes time to get over with. If you're wondering why the conditioner is a teeny bit bigger than the shampoo, it's because I still have the original conditioner I bought more than a year ago! The new stock somehow has decreased in weight although the price has increased. Anyway, I still think this shampoo is worth every penny especially if you have curly, frizzy hair like mine.

Originally Tigi's Curls Rock Curl Booster was my hairspray of choice but after I ran out of it I couldn't find it at the store that I bought it from. But they had the Organix Moroccan sea salt spray which sounded really good. Again I took a leap of faith & bought it and I have to say I really like it. It doesn't hold as well as The Tigi Curls Rock hairspray but I love that it's nourishing and doesn't leave my hair super crunchy like most hairsprays.
The serum though was kind of an accident. My mother unknowingly bought the Matrix Biolage hair serum instead of the Loreal's hair serum at the store that stocks both! A total facepalm moment but still I thought I'd give this a try. At first, I was put off by the smell, you know that predominant oily smell I mentioned before? THAT. Thankfully, the smell wanes after a few minutes leaving ultra shiny hair. Although this one's cheaper, I still prefer the L'oreal hair serum.

All you have to do is sketch a fabric design with this silhouette in mind and submit it. Do remember that you need to submit ORIGINAL prints. I've sourced my prints from deviantart and tumblr just to demonstrate with the help of Photoshop!

♥ I am in the process of growing out my bangs. As much as I love my fringe, it's high maintenance. Some days I just don't want to worry about how my bangs look constantly. A Picture An Hour in Goa

It's been exactly a week since my trip to Goa for a cousin's wedding with my mom and her sister. Honestly, I didn't want to leave! Every time I visit Goa I tend to take a lot of touristy pictures, you know, pictures you'd see on the back of a post card or something like that. So this is sort of my post card to you! I didn't intend this to be a picture an hour kind of post but well I did take pictures constantly (over 500!) and so it was quite difficult for me to round up these 20 odd photos. All of which were clicked in a span of a day.

Hello there! I know I don't talk a lot about makeup on here because I honestly don't know much about the varied products in the market. I just tend to stick to what works for me and rarely get out of my 'makeup comfort zone' but anyway here's a little post with my all time favourite makeup products. Some old, some brand new but all of them are currently my favourites. Also, I used these exact products to do my makeup in my previous outfit post so now you know!
