When planting seeds in containers, plant the seed roughly three times deeper than the seed’s size. Be aware that some seeds shouldn’t be covered, as they need sunlight. Some examples are petunias and ageratum. If you’re not sure, a guide either comes with seeds, or you can find this information online.

Be cognizant of when and how to give the plants in your organic garden enough water. One way to ensure this is to use a soaker hose. These can directly water the base of the plant, which will help reduce loss of moisture associated with evaporation. The early morning time is the best time to water your organic garden.

Use fresh water to clean your vegetables, and then save this water for your garden. The water adds valuable nutrients back to your soil. In order to get the best results, don’t use foreign objects or any type of cleaners when cleaning your vegetables.

Mulch your garden rather heavily. Remember, the mulch will compact and break down over time. This is a great tip to practice for a healthy, vibrant organic garden. Not only will the mulch nourish the soil and subsequently the plants, but it also helps to cut back on the amount of weeds that grow in your garden.

One way to help maintain healthy soil is to incorporate mulch into your landscape. Protection is provided by placing the layer of mulch upon the soil. On hot, dry days, mulch keeps the dirt underneath cool and moist. This protects and nourishes plant roots. Evaporation will be reduced and the soil will remain moist for longer when you water. It is also very good at controlling the weeds.

Ruffle the seedlings carefully with a piece of soft cardboard or your hands twice a day. This may sound strange, but research has proven that doing this will help your plants grow bigger than if they were not petted at all.

One way to help your organic garden thrive is to leave an undeveloped area that is conducive to the wildlife around your area. You will see many of the birds and insects that are present will assist in pollination and plant production, helping to create a much better garden.

One way to save on watering costs in your garden is to use a large amount of mulch. Using mulch will allow the soil to retain humidity more efficiently, and your garden will not have to be watered as frequently. You can use any kind of mulch, whether it’s store bought or plant compost from your yard. Just be sure you use a lot of it.

Water based on the current climate and the season. The amount of water a plant needs depends on the soil type, time of day and the water’s quality. For instance, if you live in a warm, humid climate watering the leaves can cause leaf fungus. The important thing is to make sure the plant’s roots receive sufficient water.

Get your children interested in helping with your organic garden. Children will benefit from the fresh air while bonding with you in your efforts to provide healthier food alternatives for them.

Be specific about the things you desire to grow when it comes to your organic garden. Not all plants thrive well in the same environment. For instance, a number of kinds of roses are available, but some will grow and bloom in your garden whereas others won’t. You need to select the varieties that will best suit the environment you will be planting them in.

Organic gardening makes a huge difference in the taste and freshness of your produce. It does take some effort and not a little patience. In the end, though, it is a rewarding and healthy hobby that can offer you benefits that last a lifetime.

When you are doing work in your garden, be efficient. Keep all of your tools together; do not waste time looking for them! Prepare all the tools you need before you go out to work on your garden, and put them away nicely when you are done. If needed, purchase a tool belt or heavy duty pants with plenty of pockets.

Avoid over-watering your plants. Excess water may hinder the plant’s roots from getting nutrition from the soil. Check the weather forecast before you water any of your outdoor plants to see if rain is expected that day. You may want to skip the watering during a day that will receive significant rainfall.

When growing plants inside of the house, you should ensure the thermostat is set at around 65-75 degrees in the daytime. It is important for them to be kept in this temperature range if they are to grow properly. If you think it would not be comfortable to keep your residence that warm in the winter, consider purchasing a heat lamp to use on the plants.

Creating a trap with beer can help reduce the number of slugs in your garden. Bury a jar in the garden with it’s mouth open and level to the ground. Pour enough beer into the jar to fill it below an inch from the top. Slugs are attracted to beer. They will crawl into the jar and be trapped.

As you plot the schematics of your garden, make room to create small valleys between each row. This will help water flow directly to your plants so that they do not require watering as frequently. You will conserve water and save money at the same time.

Organic gardening sounds like a new fad but in fact it is the tried and true method that existed long ago before the advent of chemicals. Pilgrims were taught by the Indians to include a fish with planted crop seeds. You can do something similar by developing a compost pile for fertilizing your garden. Compost piles not only reduce the amount of trash put in landfills, but also helps to increase output of your garden’s produce.

Compost can be very useful when you decide to grow a garden organically, yet a lot of people don’t know what compost is made up of. Compost is made up of things like old produce scraps, leaves, twigs, grass clippings and wood-chips that have broken down into something similar to soil in texture. Use this instead of commercial fertilizer.

Spacing is one important factor in gardening. It is easy to underestimate the amount of space that the plants will take up once they start to grow. Failure to provide adequate room will restrict growth because it forces plants to compete for valuable nutrients and oxygen. Plot out all of these considerations before putting that first seed in the ground.

For an all-natural pesticide that will not harm your garden, mix onion, garlic, or chives with plain water. This mixture can then be sprayed directly on the plants. First, dice an onion, garlic clove or bundle of chives into a fine consistency. Next, add these ingredients to one-half cup of water, then use a strainer as you pour the concoction into a sprayer bottle.

It is a great idea to help your garden by ruffling seedlings, either with cardboard or with your own hands, a couple of times each day. However odd this may sound, research shows that this touching encourages seedlings to grow better than they would without touching.

Add used coffee grounds to your garden soil. Coffee grounds contain many of the essential nitrogenous nutrients that plants are able to use. Plants need nitrogen in order to thrive, so give it a natural source with coffee grounds, then watch everything come to life much more quickly.

Pine can be a wonderful mulch. Acidic soil is a favorite of garden plants that are high in acidity. If your garden contains plants like this, there are few things simpler than spreading some pine needles across your beds. Cover the beds with a couple inches of needles and as they decompose, they will disperse acid to the soil.

Use a mixture of six parts water and one part milk to spray the plants in your garden regularly. This will keep powdery mildew away. This all-natural mixture can be stored in the refrigerator for as long as three weeks. Use it every day until all traces of mildew are gone.

Open your imagination as to what type of plants you would like to plant into your organic garden. Acid-loving plants especially love mulch. These kinds of plants need to be mulched with thick layers of pine needles during fall each year. When the needles decompose, they deposit the natural acids inside of them into that soil.

To succeed at a nature based hobby like organic gardening, you need a little hard work and a whole lot of patience. This wonderful past time uses land to produce delicious foods for your table. Follow the tips and put in the needed effort, and you will be a successful organic gardener.
