Now that we’ve reached the last frost date it’s time to revive your green thumb and add some new perennials to your landscape! But before you get started take a look at these tips on the best planting practices.

Design your garden so that as one plant stops blooming another one starts. With the plants you select, something should always be in bloom from early spring well into the fall.

Look for the more drought-tolerant varieties that will thrive at Colorado’s altitude and your plant hardiness zone.

When planting, place plants in the yard according to their needs for sun/shade and group them by their water needs–low/medium/higher.

Look for Plant Select varieties because these plants have been developed for Colorado’s growing conditions and some even thrive at very high altitudes. (ALCC)

Top Outdoor Living Trends for 2012

At the start of the year did you see new of the top outdoor living trends everywhere you turned? If so, have you ever wondered what other homeowners are really asking landscaper architects for? Well thanks to the 2012 Residential Landscape Architecture Trends survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects you can find out. Landscape architects with a specialization in residential design from all across the country were polled, and overall homeowners have a strong preference for non-demanding spaces that allow for dining and entertaining.

More specifically the survey showed that homeowners prefer the following for their outdoor spaces:

low-maintenance landscapes (96.6 percent)
fireplaces/firepits (95.8 percent)
spas (80.4 percent)
pools (79.2 percent)
decorative water features (89.9 percent)
dining areas (95.7 percent)
native plants (86.3 percent)
permeable paving (71.6 percent)
