PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Temple and the Big East are talking about the Owls rejoining the conference as soon as next season.

MAC Commissioner Jon A. Steinbrecher said in a statement Wednesday that his league is “aware that Temple has been in discussions with the Big East regarding membership.”

A person familiar with the talks says the school and the Big East are trying to negotiate a deal that could have Temple in the league for all sports by next season. The person spoke Wednesday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the talks are still ongoing.

Temple played in the Big East in football only from 1991-2004, but was forced out of the league because the program was one of the worst in major college football. The Philadelphia-based school played as a football independent and eventually landed in the Mid-American Conference in 2007. In the MAC, Temple has turned its football program around and run off winning seasons the past three years.

The Owls’ other sports programs, including men’s and women’s basketball, compete in the Atlantic 10.

The Big East has a vacancy next season now that West Virginia is being allowed to leave immediately for the Big 12. The school and the conference settled competing lawsuits last week. The Big East will receive $20 million dollars from West Virginia in return for setting aside its 27-month notification period.

The New York Times reported on the talks between Temple and the Big East earlier Wednesday.

Temple athletic director Bill Bradshaw had no comment on the matter.

The MAC has had 13 football schools since adding Temple in 2007. Last year, the MAC added Massachusetts as a football-only member, beginning in the 2012 season. At the same time, the MAC put in place new exit provisions which state that any football-only member wishing to leave the conference would need to provide notice two football seasons before departure and pay a fee of $2.5 million.

“Our position on this matter is that we have a contract in place with specifics that will govern and determine how this matter is handled,” Steinbrecher said.

The Big East has added seven schools since December, but most of them are planning to join in 2013. Navy is committed to become a football-only member of the Big East in 2015. The Big East was hoping to get one of its future members to join a year early to replace West Virginia. Boise State was the most likely candidate to move up its arrival, but the school announced Wednesday that it will stay in the Mountain West for one more year.

University President Bob Kustra said in a statement there were several discussions about moving football to the Big East and the rest of the sports to the Western Athletic Conference for the 2012-13 school year.

“While there certainly would have been advantages in making the move a year early, it became clear that it would not be fiscally responsible, as all of the expenses associated with early entry into the two conferences would not be covered,” Kustra said.

Adding Temple for 2012 would not only allow Big East members to fill West Virginia’s spot on their football schedules, it would give the conference another perennially strong basketball program to help make up for the eventual losses of Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Pitt and Syracuse have said they won’t fight the Big East for an early exit, though Commissioner John Marinatto said after the West Virginia case was settled that the Big East would be open to discussing the Panthers and Orange leaving after the 2012-13 season.

Stosur broke twice in the first and third sets and saved all nine break points she faced in the match. She will meet Jelena Jankovic of Serbia in the third round on Thursday. Jankovic defeated Italy’s Flavia Pennetta 7-5, 6-4.

Jankovic beat Stosur in the quarterfinals in the Dubai tournament last year.

“Good chance for me to try and bounce back from that loss,” Stosur said. “I think I’ve got to really step up and play aggressive and realize she’s not going to make too many errors.”

Earlier Wednesday, top-ranked Victoria Azarenka pulled out of the Dubai tournament because of a left ankle injury. The Australia Open champion, who has won 17 straight matches this season, says she will rest for two or three days.

“Obviously, it’s very disappointing. But, I mean, it’s life. It’s sport,” Azarenka said. “I just have to take care of it. Hopefully, it will settle down.”

Azarenka said she injured her left ankle during last week’s semifinal match at the Qatar Open. Azarenka shook off the injury to beat Stosur in the final.

Sabine Lisicki of Germany also advanced after defeating Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-3. Lisicki will play Agnieszka Radwanska, who defeated Israel’s Shahar Peer 7-5, 6-4.

Azarenka said the packed tennis schedule and increasingly tough competition could be the cause of injuries among the players.

Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, French Open winner Li Na and Vera Zvonareva also pulled out the Dubai tournament because of injury or illness.

“For me, obviously I played so much, and it was an unfortunate situation what happened in Doha,” Azarenka said. “But I mean, it’s just the game became so physical. Sometimes it’s really tough on the body week after week to play.

“For example, these tournaments back-to-back with such a tough field, it takes a lot out of you physically.”

Wozniacki was No. 1 until Azarenka unseated her last month by winning the Australian Open. She said she hopes her Belarusian friend recovers from the injury after a good rest.

“Vika has had a great start to the year. I’m sure her body is feeling very tired at the moment, and she needed the rest before Indian Wells,” Wozniacki said. “You know, injuries happen in tennis. Just need to be happy when you’re healthy.”

The 43-year-old seven-times world champion is starting the third season of his comeback still chasing his first podium finish since he retired as a Ferrari driver in 2006.

Vettel has won the last two championships, taking 11 victories last season and wrapping up the title with four races to spare.

Ecclestone said he did not want to see that domination again this year, when there will be an unprecedented six champions on the starting grid, and hoped Schumacher would come good.

“I’m just saying it would be nice to see him (Schumacher) in the car where you know that if he doesn’t win, it’s his fault and not the car’s.”

Asked whether he felt the older German – who has looked in fine form in pre-season testing – could still win, Ecclestone replied: “Yeah, sure.”

The 81-year-old said the season would have 20 races as scheduled with no question mark over any of them.

Bahrain, a race cancelled last year due to unrest in the Gulf kingdom, was 100 percent certain, the new U.S. race at Austin, Texas, was “cracking away” on building a circuit and South Korea was all in order.

Ecclestone said the teams were right to ask for a bigger slice of the commercial revenues but their chances of extracting more money out of him in a new ‘Concorde Agreement’ under negotiation were “slim to none.”

STRONG FERRARI

With no Italian drivers on the grid for the first time in more than 40 years, Ecclestone recognized that the sport needed a strong Ferrari.

“It’s better that we do have a good Italian. But if Ferrari is winning, it doesn’t make any difference,” he said.

The Italian glamour team, who have been present at every championship since 1950, have not set the testing track alight and have said they have plenty of work to do before the start of the season in Australia on March 18.

“They know what the problem is and it’s not a problem (difficult) to fix,” said Ecclestone. “So I think you’re going to find that they are going to fix it quite shortly.”

The Briton said he expected compatriot and 2008 champion Lewis Hamilton to be making the right moves again after a controversial and crash-laden season last year.

“I spoke to him the other day. I think he’s got a bit more focused,” he said, while criticizing the management he had around him in 2011.

Hamilton’s McLaren contract is up for renewal at the end of the season and Ecclestone suggested that a move could be on the cards if he or the team were off the pace.

“I think if he doesn’t perform this year he’d be looking maybe to move on and the team may be also looking for him to move on,” he added.

(PhatzRadio / USA Today) — To most people it would seem the NFL sits safely atop the American sports pyramid, but former quarterback Troy Aikman says the league could be in for a fall.

Aikman, who is in the college football and Pro Football Halls of Fame and is now an analyst for Fox, was participating last week on a panel examining whether Los Angeles is ready for an NFL team when he expressed concern about the direction of the league, specifically the NFL’s attempts to reign in the rate at which players are sustaining concussions.

“The long-term viability, to me anyway, is somewhat in question as far as what this game is going to look like 20 years from now,” Aikman said, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Aikman’s 12-year career was cut short as a result concussions. He doesn’t have a son but said if he did he would have second thoughts about sending him into a career as a football player. “I wouldn’t tell him he couldn’t play football,” he said. “If he wanted to, I would say ‘OK, great.’ But I don’t know if I would be encouraging him to play. Whereas, with the other sports, you want your kids to be active and doing those types of things.”

Aikman, 45, also said the NFL may be making other strategics mistakes that will set itself up for a fall, including televising too many games. He said the fact L.A. has been without a team since 1994, and doesn’t seem to miss it, is evidence that the NFL isn’t a must in people’s lives.

“At one time, watching football was an event,” Aikman said. “Monday Night Football was a big event. Now you get football Sunday, you get it Monday, you get it Thursday and, late in the year, you get it on Saturday.

“People in Los Angeles realized, ‘You know what, life’s OK without the NFL.’ If I’m an owner, I don’t want any fan thinking that.”

The NFL continued to draw strong TV ratings last season, including a record 111.3 million viewers for the the Super Bowl earlier this month. Aikman acknowledges there’s not much to support his point of view but says wait and see.

“I believe, and this is my opinion, that at some point football is not going to be the No. 1 sport. You talk about the ebbs and flows of what’s popular and what’s not. At some point, the TV ratings are not going to be there,” he said. “I can’t justify that because the numbers say otherwise, but I guess time will tell.”

SAN MATEO, Calif. (AP) — Tom Martinez, the longtime personal coach to New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, has died at 67.

His wife, Olivia, told the San Mateo Daily Journal that he died Tuesday after suffering a heart attack while receiving dialysis treatment. The San Francisco Chronicle reported he died in Redwood City.

Tom Martinez worked with Brady when he was a teenager growing up in San Mateo, where Martinez coached at College of San Mateo. Their relationship continued during Brady’s NFL career.

Martinez told the San Francisco Chronicle before the Patriots’ Super Bowl matchup against the New York Giants this year that he always enjoyed working with Brady and watching him play.

Brady was equally complimentary, telling reporters before the Super Bowl that Martinez taught him how to throw a football, and he was “forever indebted” to him.

“He’s been a great friend of mine for a long time,” Brady said, adding that Martinez had been seeking a kidney for some time.

“A lot of people are looking for kidneys or some different type of transplants, but he’s very deserving,” Brady said. “He’s a great man.”

A spokesman for the Patriots said early Wednesday that Brady could not immediately be reached for comment. The team posted to Twitter late Tuesday, “Our sincere condolences go out to the Martinez family & all those he mentored throughout his incredible career.”

Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman also tweeted, “RIP coach Tom Martinez. He was such a great mentor to many in the bay area. His legacy will always live on.”

Olivia Martinez told the Daily Journal in an email that Martinez “leaves three children . their spouses . six grandchildren and hundreds of young athletes in the Bay Area and around the country.”

Doctors told Martinez last spring that he had months or less to live due to a combination of kidney and heart problems, the Daily Journal reported. His prognosis was, at least temporarily, debunked when specialists discovered that it was his pacemaker that was killing him. The pacemaker was turned off in June and he had been fighting to get stronger while awaiting a kidney transplant.

Martinez was hired at College of San Mateo to coach football and teach physical education but added softball and women’s basketball to his coaching load.

His teams won 32 championships. He had 400 career wins in football, a state record 565 wins in basketball and 800 wins in softball over 32 years, the Daily Journal reported.

“He really was the representation of Bulldog athletics,” said College of San Mateo athletic director Gary Dilley. “It’s great (Martinez) made such a great contribution to Tom Brady, but really the mark he made was in the hearts he trained and coached at CSM.”

“I’m the underdog. I have nothing to lose. At the same time I don’t think he’s at his best,” said Fernandez-Castano, who has five wins on the European Tour, including the 2011 Barclays Singapore Open, but is making his Accenture debut. “If I play well I can beat him.”

Woods smiled Tuesday when he was told of his opponent’s comments.

“I feel exactly the same way he does,” said Woods, who faces Fernandez-Castano at 12:35 p.m. ET Wednesday (Golf Channel). “I feel he’s beatable, too.”

Woods, the only three-time winner and four-time finalist in this event, holds the tournament record for most matches (40) and most matches won (32). But in his last two starts since winning in 2008, he’s won just one match.

In his last event, Woods lost to playing partner and eventual winner Phil Mickelson by 11 shots in the final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. But Woods said he got some good practice in between playing with his two kids during his one-week break.

As for Fernandez-Castano providing extra motivation?

“It used to (bother me) quite a bit when I was younger,” Woods said of remarks he deemed critical. “But as I’ve matured and gone beyond that. It’s their prerogative, it’s their opinion. What matters is how I go out and play and how I’m progressing in my game.”

We’ll take your word for that, Tiger.

In 2006, when Stephen Ames was asked about playing Woods, he said that anything could happen, adding with a big smile, “Especially where he’s hitting it.”

Woods beat him 9 and 8, the most lopsided score in tournament history.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Jeff Carter had three goals — two on the power play during Columbus’ four-goal first period — and the last-place Blue Jackets handed the San Jose Sharks their season-high fourth straight loss, 6-3 on Tuesday night.

R.J. Umberger and Rick Nash, who is the subject of trade rumors with the deadline less than a week away, had a goal and an assist. David Savard also scored for Columbus. Vinny Prospal added three assists while Derick Brassard had two.

Steve Mason made 38 saves to get the win and surpass Marc Denis as the Blue Jackets’ career wins leader.

Logan Couture scored twice and Joe Thornton also had a goal for San Jose. Starting goalie Antti Niemi was pulled after allowing three goals on 11 shots.

The Sharks fell to 1-4-1 on their season-long, nine-game road trip.

Carter scored his 15th goal of the season and the third of the game for his second hat trick of the season at 1:26 of the third to give Columbus a 6-2 lead.

Couture scored his team-leading 27th goal on a redirection on a power play to make it 6-3 at 8:35 of the third.

Then just 13 seconds later, the Sharks thought they pulled closer when Jamie McGinn batted in another high puck that went into the air behind Mason.

But the play went to video review and it was ruled the puck was hit when it was above the crossbar and the goal was disallowed.

Columbus started strong, scoring twice in the first seven minutes. The Blue Jackets then made it 3-0 that ended Niemi’s night and added one more with 30 seconds left in the period. Niemi was replaced by Thomas Greiss, who stopped 21 of 24 shots.

Umberger opened the scoring as he stuffed in his own rebound for his 10th of the season at 4:55.

Carter made it 2-0 at 6:51 on the power play with a shot from the high slot past Niemi after a nice give and go passing play with Prospal.

Then Nash curled out of the right corner, and scored on a wrister from between the circles for his 20th at 15:18, sending Niemi to the bench.

Flyers 5, Jets 4 (0T)

Fisher who sat out Sunday’s game in Dallas due to illness, broke the scoreless tie 5:42 into the second period.

Pekka Rinne made 32 saves for the win. Roberto Luongo stopped 25 shots in the loss.

Devils 4, Maple Leafs 3 (OT)

TORONTO — Mark Fayne scored 1:18 into overtime to give the New Jersey Devils a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 on Tuesday night.

Fayne’s weak shot from the point found its way through goalie Jonas Gustavsson.

Vrbata scored on a power play with 2:27 left after Kings winger Kyle Clifford received a game misconduct for a head shot on Coyotes center Gilbert Brule.

TAMPA — Steven Stamkos scored his league-leading 41st and 42nd goals of the season and added an assist as the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Stamkos put the Lightning up 1-0 when he poked a loose puck past goalie Jonas Hiller on a power play 28 seconds into the game. The center, who has five goals and eight points during a three-game point streak, made it 2-0 with an in-close rebound goal at 17:58 of the first.

Tampa Bay also got a goal and two assists from Teddy Purcell. The Lightning have won three in a row and are 10-3-2 in the last 15 games.

Carey Price stopped 33 shots for the Canadiens (24-27-10), who have lost four of five after a four-game winning streak.

The Stars took control in the first period, outshooting the Canadiens 15-6. The shots were 9-0 in favor of Dallas before Montreal recorded its first at 8:14.

For a fifth straight game, the Canadiens allowed their opponent to strike first when Garbutt, just called up from the minors, snapped a shot from the circle over a crouched Price.

Edmonton 6, Calgary 1

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Sam Gagner scored a goal and added two assists, and the Edmonton Oilers broke out with four unanswered goals in the second period in a 6-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night.

Calgary, which fell to 5-1-3 in February, had won 10 straight at home against the Oilers and beaten them in 16 of 17 meetings.

Edmonton had won just one of six overall and one of nine on the road.

Sabres 2, Islanders 1

BUFFALO — Ryan Miller made 30 saves, including stopping Matt Moulson on the doorstep with 4:04 left, and led the Buffalo Sabres to a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders on Tuesday night.

Tyler Myers and Thomas Vanek staked the Sabres to a 2-0 lead, and Buffalo won its second in a row since an 0-3-1 skid. Jason Pominville and Derek Roy had two assists for Buffalo (26-27-7), which jumped a point ahead of the Islanders (25-27-8) in the Eastern Conference standings.

Frans Nielsen scored with 5:08 left to snap the Islanders’ goal drought at 106 minutes, 51 seconds, a day after New York lost 6-0 at home to Ottawa. The inconsistent Islanders are 4-5-1 in their past 10 games.

With New York pressing for the tying goal, Moulson was set up at the right post but he was robbed by Miller, who made a sprawling save. Miller was also sharp 13 minutes into the second period, when he stopped Brian Rolston on a breakaway and then got his chest up to foil Josh Bailey on the rebound.

The loss to Buffalo came with former NHL star Doug Weight filling in behind the Islanders bench because head coach Jack Capuano was sick with the flu at the team hotel.
