Phentermine Diet Pill

Phentermine is a prescription weight loss medication that was first FDA approved in 1959 and is sold under brand names Ionamin and Adipex among others and as well as a generic version. It is by far the most popular diet pill and has enjoyed a great success rate for obese people who need to lose weight in the short term. But it is not available online ANYWHERE it is ILLEGAL, there is a Phentermine alternative that does have proven results Phentramin-D.

Read real customer reviews of Phentramin-D and look at the before and after photos to see the REAL RESULTS that this leading phentermine alternative has achieved

Common Phentermine Side Effects

As successful as the phentermine prescription diet pill is it can only be used for a short period of time as it carries with it many side effects that can be dangerous and at times fatal. or a safer solution try Phentramin-D

Common side effects include dizziness, dry mouth, difficulty sleeping, irritability, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation.

Serious side effects can be irregular heartbeat, mood changes, uncontrolled muscle movements, sexual dysfunction, severe headache, muscle weakness, and blurred vision.

Possible fatal side effects include chest pain, difficulty breathing, seizure, fainting, swelling of the legs/feet, and swelling of the throat/tongue.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Phentermine Online Scams

With its wide popularity Phentermine has a number of scams associated with it, the most notable being online pharmacies that claim to sell it without a prescription. Many websites claim that they will ship the real thing right to your door without a prescription and without ever needing to see a doctor, if you come across one of these websites it is best to leave right away because one a few things will become of this if you deal with them

They will ship counterfeit pills that are merely herbal supplements.

They will use credit card information to steal money/identity

Even if it is real it is illegal to purchase online in the United States and there is a strong possibility you could be prosecuted as the DEA is cracking down on online prescription drugs.

Use the fact that you are trying to purchase drugs online and pose as law enforcement for bribery purposes.

These are just some of the most common scams that are used, so if you really want prescription diet pills you need to see your doctor and get a prescription.

Phentermine Overview

While phentermine is a very successful weight loss pill it is only used for people classified as obese and then it is only used for a short period of time due to the many side effects and threat of addiction. Remember it is illegal to purchase online without a prescription so be wary of scam websites that tell you they sell the real thing.

While it continues to gain popularity, the fact remains that it cannot be purchased without a prescription and is not available online at all legally there are over the counter legal alternatives. Phentramin-D is the leading alternative to phentermine, it is not an herbal substitute it is a pharmaceutical grade weight loss pill that has enjoyed success and great results for quite some time.

Belviq Finally Hits the Market

Arena Pharmaceuticals’ highly anticipated weight-loss drug, Belviq, will go on sale on Tuesday, the San Diego company announced today.

Arena’s marketing partner, the Japanese pharmaceutical company Eisai, will actually sell the drug, which received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration nearly a year ago.

Arena says it will use the revenue to develop more drugs in its pipeline. Belviq is Arena’s first product to reach the market, a crucial milestone for a biotech company.

Eisai has said Belviq will cost $200 a month wholesale; the price patients pay will vary depending on insurance coverage.

Arena makes Belviq at its manufacturing plant in Switzerland, and sells it to Eisai for a purchase price starting at 31.5 percent of Eisai’s annual net product sales. The price rises to 36.5 percent of the annual net sales exceeding $750 million. Arena said it is also eligible to get $1.19 billion in other payments based on Eisei’s annual net sales of Belviq.

Belviq is to be used along with diet and exercise under a doctor’s guidance. The drug suppresses appetite in a way similar to the neurotransmitter serotonin, but more selectively. That selectivity makes Belviq safer than existing drugs, says Arena co-founders Jack Lief, chief executive, and Dominic Behan, executive vice president and chief scientific officer.

However, newness in a drug has disadvantages. It took much longer for Belviq to reach the market than a rival drug from Mountain View-based Vivus, even though both were approved by the FDA at about the same time.

The FDA approved Belviq on June 27, and the Vivus drug, Qsymia, on July 17. Vivus started selling Qsymia on Sept. 18. Because Belviq is new, it received months of scrutiny from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, which is required to rank drugs on a schedule for potential abuse.

The DEA ranked Belviq on May 7 as a Schedule 4 drug, indicating a relatively low risk for abuse. Qsymia is also rated Schedule 4. Qsymia is a combination of two existing drugs, phentermine, a stimulant and appetite suppressant; and topimirate, an anti-seizure medication.

However, Qsymia’s head start hasn’t closed the door on Belviq. Sales of Qsymia have been modest to slow, according to quarterly reports from Vivus. In the quarter ended March 31, Vivus reported Qsymia net revenue of $4.1 million. On the whole, the company had a net loss of $53.6 million, or 53 cents per share. Arena lost $18.9 million, or 9 cents per share, in that quarter.

Shares of both Arena and Vivus are down from last summer, when their drugs were approved, with Vivus falling more sharply.

Vivus shares closed at $29 on July 18, the day after approval; the stock closed Thursday at $14.10. Arena shares closed at $9.33 on July 30, the trading day after approval. On Thursday, the stock closed at $8.66.

Moreover, Arena’s market value of $1.89 billion currently surpasses that of Vivus, valued at $1.42 billion.

Arena and Vivus aren’t the only competitors with new weight-loss drugs. San Diego-based Orexigen has produced its own contender, Contrave.

However, the FDA declined to approve Contrave in 2011, sending the drug back for more testing. Orexigen is in the process of gathering that evidence in a new clinical trial called the Light Study.

Behan led development of Arena’s drug discovery technology. The technology targets molecules on cell surfaces called G-Protein Coupled Receptors. These GPCRs are among the most common cell receptors, and so present a big target for drugs for various diseases.

Behan has co-authored many scientific papers, including one published in 2002 about the use of GPCRs to discover drugs affecting the central nervous system.

Phentermine May Not Be Addictive

A new study shows that sudden termination of the anti-obesity drug phentermine does not bring on amphetamine like withdrawal symptoms, even in patients who have been taking it for decades.

The study, by Ed Hendricks, MD, and colleagues, from the Center for Weight Management, Sacramento and Roseville, California, was presented at ECO2013, the 20th European Congress on Obesity, last week.

It revealed that other than a feeling of hunger — reflecting the removal of phentermine’s therapeutic effect — patients experienced no symptoms of dependence.

“This study suggests fears of causing addiction with long-term phentermine prescribing are exaggerated and present a needless barrier to better care for overweight and obese patients worldwide,” said Dr. Hendricks.

But 1 European expert greeted the study with reservation, despite the shortage of pharmacological treatment options for obesity in the European Union.

Asked to comment, Jason Halford, PhD, who runs the biggest center dedicated to eating behavior and appetite regulation in Europe, based at Liverpool University, United Kingdom, told Medscape Medical News: “While these data provide some reassurance, the problem is that the drug is old and the data are very limited. Phentermine is only ever used as a treatment for obesity in the United States.”

Added to this, “there are a number of other potential effects such as cardiovascular problems that also need to be considered,” he stressed.

And asked about the new combination product Qsiva (Vivus), which contains a low dose of phentermine and extended-release topiramate, he said he is still not convinced of its benefits. The product is available in the United States but has twice been rejected by the European Medicines Agency.

Phentermine “Far Safer Than Commonly Assumed”

Phentermine is a psychostimulant drug of the phenethylamine class. It has suffered from an association with heart-valve problems as part of the diet drug combination “fen/phen” (fenfluramine and phentermine), which was withdrawn worldwide a number of years ago.

On its own, phentermine is primarily used as an appetite suppressant in the United States, to help reduce weight in obese patients combined with exercise, diet, and behavioral modification. It was taken off the market in a number of countries, including many in Europe, but is still available in many others, although it is often restricted to short-term use.

Dr. Hendricks said concerns about withdrawal syndrome with phentermine are based on its similarity to amphetamines but that no study to date has provided conclusive evidence of this effect.

In his study, he took 76 subjects who had been taking phentermine for between 1 and 21.5 years (mean, 8.4 years), on a mean dosage of 54 mg/day. They were tested to establish a baseline with the 10-question Phentermine Withdrawal Questionnaire (PWQ) — a modification of the Amphetamine Withdrawal Questionnaire.

The drug was then withheld for 2 days, and the patients were retested with the PWQ on both days (D1 and D2) before resuming phentermine.

Total scores (out of 40) were significantly different across the 3 days, ranging from 3.39 on D0 to 3.55 for D1 and 2.99 for D2. But breaking down the score into its components, the only significantlydifference was for hyperphagia — excessive hunger — which increased from D0 to D1 and then went down again on D2.

When hyperphagia scoring was deleted, the remaining 9-item scores were not significantly different. Typical expected AWQ total scores for methamphetamine-dependent subjects would be much higher (in the region of D0 more than 10 and D1 and D2 more than 20), Dr. Hendricks said.

He also noted that he has previously published evidence from his practice that long-term phentermine treatment induces cardiovascular benefits rather than harm.

“Phentermine and the other sympathomimetic drugs for weight loss are mistakenly stigmatized because their structures superficially resemble amphetamine. The evidence strongly suggests phentermine is far safer than is commonly assumed,” he asserted.

But European Union Doesn’t Think So; Stalls on Latest Obesity Drugs

The EU authorities, at least, are not convinced of phentermine’s safety. Rejecting Qsiva for the second time in February, the European Medicines Agency said phentermine is known to increase heart rate and its long-term effects “are not clear.” It also had concerns about the long-term psychiatric and cognitive effects of topiramate.

But the same product was cleared for marketing in the United States last year, where it is known asQsymia. Despite initial enthusiasm, however, sales of Qsymia are below expectation there, industry analysts say.

Dr. Halford told Medscape Medical News that while there is some possible merit in combining phentermine with topiramate — the combination allows the amount of each individual drug to be reduced compared with the dose required when used alone (in phentermine’s case from around 50 mg down to 7.5 mg) — he still feels there are not enough data on the side-effect profile of the 2-drug product to make it an attractive proposition for licensing in Europe.

“There are no robust data on eating behavior, either,” he stressed. “Given that the phentermine/topiramate preparation is supposed to be helping people with problems with appetite, they need the evidence to support that, but the entire focus is on outcomes. For a drug to be successful worldwide, it needs US and European backing.”

A second potential obesity drug, lorcaserin (Belviq, Arena Pharmaceuticals), has also failed to gain marketing approval in the European Union, where the company withdrew its application earlier this month. It too has been cleared in the United States, where it is due for launch shortly.

Belviq and Qsymia have both been classified as schedule IV drugs — the second-least-restrictive designation on a 5-step scale — by the US Drug Enforcement Agency.

Belviq Gets Final Endorsement To Begin Sales

Arena Pharmaceuticals’ prescription diet pill Belviq has received the last regulatory approval needed to commence sales, the San Diego corporation said Tuesday. The diet pill will be Arena’s first product on the market.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration rated Belviq as a Schedule 4 controlled substance, indicating a fairly low risk of abuse. Belviq was permitted by the Food and Drug Administration in 2012, but DEA scheduling was needed before Belviq sales could begin.

Sales of Belviq can begin as early as 30 days from publication of the DEA consent, likely in the Federal Register today, Arena said. Sales are being handled by Arena’s marketing partner, Japan-based Eisai Pharmaceuticals.

Arena shares closed at $8.34, up 82 cents, or 11 percent, for the day.

Belviq reduces appetite, allowing people to feel full while eating less. It’s to be taken along with a plan of exercise and diet. Arena says the drug will give those trying to lose weight the extra push needed to help them succeed.

Eisai said in March that the wholesale cost of Belviq will be $199.50 for a bottle of 60 10mg tablets, a one-month supply.

The drug targets a cellular molecule called a receptor, causing the feeling of being sated. The receptor is normally activated by the neurotransmitter serotonin. Other weight-loss drugs produce this effect by stimulating serotonin production. However, such drugs have been found to cause health problems, such as abnormalities in heart valves.

One of the serotonin-stimulating drugs, fenfluramine, was withdrawn from the market in 1997 after a number of deaths were attributed to it. It was part of the popular weight-loss combo fen-phen, which also contained phentermine.

A rival weight loss drug, Qsymia, contains phentermine and topimirate, an anti-seizure drug. Mountain View-based Vivus began selling Qsymia last year.

Safety questions have dogged both Qsymia and Belviq, because of their similar mechanism of action. Arena says Belviq is safer because it is an entirely new drug that selectively activates just one of the serotonin receptors, instead of all receptors that serotonin targets.

Continuing questions from European regulators led Arena to withdraw an application to market Belviq in Europe. Last October, Qsymia was rejected for sale in Europe.

USA drugmaker Vivus’ (Nasdaq: VVUS) shares rose as much as 11% by traded up 5% at $11.69, after the company exposed on April 16 that the US Food and Drug Administration has accepted its alteration and adjustments to the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) for its diet pill Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate extended-release) capsules CIV.

The modification, submitted in October 2012, allows Qsymia to be dispensed through certified retail pharmacies, in addition to the existing network of certified mail-order pharmacies. Vivus has blamed Qsymia’s disappointing launch, in part, on the mail-order pharmacy restriction imposed with its July 2012 approval. Sales totaled $2 million in the fourth quarter, well below investor expectations.

“With FDA approval of the REMS modification, today we begin the process of increasing the availability of Qsymia, simplifying prescribing and dispensing and resolving the challenges associated with the mail-order-only system,” said Peter Tam , president of Vivus. “Our goal over the next three months is to ensure availability of Qsymia in thousands of certified retail pharmacies nationwide. The REMS modification is a key accomplishment in removing a major barrier that has hindered the initial acceptance of Qsymia into everyday medical practice. We believe that retail access, along with ongoing improvements in reimbursement, will help to accelerate Qsymia awareness, trial and usage,” he added.

Will reduce prescribing burden

“The addition of certified retail pharmacies to the Qsymia network will reduce the prescribing burden for physicians and the waiting times for patients seeking to initiate therapy for obesity,” said Barbara Troupin, vice president, scientific communication and risk management, at Vivus, noting that, “while the Qsymia certified mail-order pharmacies will remain, the addition of retail availability will improve the overall physician and patient experience.”

With this modification, the goals, commitments and components of the original Qsymia REMS will remain in place, including a Medication Guide, patient brochure, voluntary health care provider training and other educational tools. These will continue to be available as part of the modified Qsymia REMS program. Availability at certified retail pharmacies is expected within 90 days, said Vivus.

Over the years there have been many prescription diet pills on the market and almost all of them have one thing in common, they all lose their Food and Drug Administration approval over time. That is except for one Phentermine, this has been the most successful and by far the longest lasting prescription diet pill on the market for over forty years. Its ability to stay approved by the FDA for so long has given many a false sense of safety and leads many to using it with or without a doctor’s approval.

A Look Back

Phentermine was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1959, and finally became publicly available in the 1970s.

One of the few setbacks for Phentermine is when the DEA labeled it a schedule IV drug similar to that of amphetamines.

It is probably most famous for its combination with Fenfluramine to form Fen/Phen the popular diet pill combination of the early 90s. The combination was short lived and by t1997 the FDA asked that it be removed from the market after reports of valvular heart disease and pulmonary hypertension, primarily in women who had been undergoing treatment with Fen/Phen. Even through all this Phentermine was found to be not a major part of the problem and remained in good standing with the Food and Drug Administration.

New Combination

In 2012 Phentermine was used in with another medication called Topiramate to create the diet pill Qsymia, the first new prescription diet pill to hit the market in years. Topiramate is an anticonvulsant (antiepilepsy) drug that doctors have used for years as a weight loss aid even before FDA approval.

The Future

The future of Phentermine seems pretty good, as long as it is treated with the caution and respect it deserves. Only use this pill if you are under a doctor’s care and realize that it takes a complete lifestyle change to lose weight.

Every new year brings with it new ways to lose weight and 2013 will be no different. While many people still rely on prescription diet pills like phentermine there are still some of the crazy alternative diets like the paleo diet and HCG diet, but with a new year comes new promise and maybe one of the weight loss trends in 2013 may just actually become the one that helps you lose weight.

DNA Based

In 1990, the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health started the Human Genome Project, with the goal of identifying and sequencing all of the genes in human DNA. The information they acquired thrilled a field called nutrigenomics, which studies how nutrients affect the way our genes express themselves and how our genes manipulate the way nutrients are metabolized. Companies are now using this information to recommend diet plans tailored to your specific genes. In other words, they claim that by using a diet that works best for your body, you’ll finally see results.

How’s it work? You order an at-home genetic testing kit from a company like Interleukin Genetics or DNAlysis, swab your cheek, and then send the tissue sample back to the company. They analyze it for markers on specific genes that research shows are most likely tied to weight and metabolism. Within a couple of weeks you’ll receive a diet prescription that will supposedly work best for your body, such as low fat, low carb, or low GI.

Fruitarianism

Practitioners of this diet attempt to get at least 75 percent of their calories from raw fruit. The last 25 percent is made up of other food that would fall naturally from a plant (nuts, seeds, and vegetables), coconut water, and oil. Although fruitarianism has been around for decades, it’s recently gained popularity among elite athletes, one of whom, Michael Arnstein, founded the Woodstock Fruit Festival, a weeklong event in upstate New York for die-hard Fruitarians, last year.

High Fiber

A high-fiber diet consists of eating 25-38 grams of fiber per day. But that doesn’t mean you have free reign to go crazy with carbs. A fiber-rich diet allows carbohydrates, but discourages processed carbs where fiber is lost. The emphasis is on fruits, veggies, and whole grains for fiber needs, in addition to lean protein.

Calorie Shifting

Calorie shifting can theoretically be applied to any diet, and basically means that day to day intake of calories will vary. First a weekly calorie allowance for weight loss is calculated, then this is divided into uneven amounts to create a calorie intake goal for each day of the week, for example rather than consuming a limit of 2000 calories per day, you may consume 1200 calories one day and 2800 the next. The idea is to ensure that you don’t go over the weekly allowance, and keep daily intake as different as possible, for example one day you may eat three small meals, and the next you may add in two snacks to increase your intake.

As with anything related to losing weight you should consult your doctor before trying any new diet plan or exercise program.

The HCG diet has gained popularity in recent years much like the Acai berry it was mentioned on the Dr. Oz show, and like the Acai berry it was taken out of context and made out to be the next big thing for weight loss. HCG which stands for human chorionic gonadotropin is a diet consisting of daily injections or supplements of HCG while eating approximately 500 calories each day.

Exactly why the HCG diet is experiencing a resurgence now is uncertain, but the publicity has sparked a response from the FDA. In January 2011, the agency warned that homeopathic HCG is deceptive and unlawful when sold for weight-loss purposes. Though the FDA said such products aren’t necessarily unsafe, their sale is misleading; since there’s no good evidence they’re helpful for weight loss. What’s more, all HCG products, including injections prescribed by a doctor, must carry a warning stating there’s no proof they speed up weight loss, redistribute fat, or numb the hunger and discomfort typical of a low-calorie diet.

In 1995, researchers analyzed 14 clinical trials on the HCG diet. Only two concluded HCG was any more effective than a placebo at helping people lose weight. And nearly 10 years earlier, a report in the Canadian Medical Association Journal stated hCG has “no value” as a means of managing obesity, and that the diet has been “thoroughly discredited and thus rejected by the majority of the medical community.”

There’s no question that 500 calories a day is equal to malnutrition—dieters should never dip below 1,200, experts say and dietary guidelines recommend more than three times the amount of calories the diet prescribes for women ages 19 to 30. Moreover, extremely low-calorie diets can cause severe bone and muscle loss, electrolyte imbalances, gallstones, and even death. “I’ve heard a lot of people say the side effects of this diet are overwhelming,” says registered dietitian Keri Gans, a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. “And they could start as soon as one day in—you’ll start feeling irritated and tired.”

While the HCG diet sounds good, when people talk of the weight loss but it appears that any weight loss has nothing to do with the HCG, but more to do with the dangerously low calorie intake. Almost anyone on a 500 calorie a day diet would lose weight, so this is just another in a long line of phony weight loss claims.

You made it through Thanksgiving. Now the Christmas holidays are looming ahead of you. It seems that the “season” of overeating is never ending. Rather than trying to lose weight over the season, it may be a better idea to simply maintain all of your hard work and begin again with the loss in the beginning of the New Year.

Most people gain weight over the Christmas holidays. It’s understandable. This season comes with candies and cakes, and it comes with cookies and chocolate. There is a way to control your weight and still enjoy yourself.

Don’t starve yourself throughout the day in order to save up for a dinner or an office party. Not only will you stuff yourself with things that can provide too many calories, you will actually do your metabolic rate a disservice. When you starve yourself, your body’s metabolism slows down to accommodate. So, eat a good breakfast and a reasonable lunch. You’ll be happy you did later.

Try to fill up on foods full of fiber and avoid going for seconds. Remind yourself of how much you generally eat and fill your plate accordingly. In addition, forgo the ordinary foods such as chips and crackers with cheese. Instead, take very small portions of the special foods you wouldn’t normally get to eat throughout the year. It only takes a few bites to satisfy that craving.

Water down your alcoholic beverages. If you must imbibe, just add some sparkling water to that wine or ask that your drink be diluted with a diet mixture. This will save calories on the alcoholic level, will leave you much more clear headed, and will help you to make good choices when it comes to nibbling. Alcohol affects our inhibitions. Drink too much, and you may not be able to control those urges to splurge.

Get your friends and family on board. Make sure they understand that you are dedicated to your diet and have them agree not to tempt you or taunt you into cheating. It is important to have their support in your efforts.

Don’t buy the chocolate or traditional snacks. Just don’t do it. If you don’t have it in the house, you cannot cheat by treating yourself to “just one.” That one is generally very difficult to stick to.

Finally, if you do slip, forgive yourself and move on. There is no reason for that slip to turn into a rock slide. Don’t let that slip become an excuse or a free ticket to totally abandon your reserve.

Keep yourself focused, and you are capable of getting through the holidays without gaining weight. Give yourself a break from losing, enjoy yourself, but keep yourself in check. When it is time to make a New Year’s resolution, you will be very glad that you did!

Weight loss surgery, which in recent years has been seen as an increasingly attractive option for treating Type 2 diabetes, may not be as effective against the disease as it was initially thought to be, according to a new report. The study found that many obese Type 2 diabetics who undergo gastric bypass surgery do not experience a remission of their disease, and of those that do, about a third redevelop diabetes within five years of their operation.

The findings contrast with the growing perception that surgery is essentially a cure for Type II diabetes. Earlier this year, two widely publicized studies reported that surgery worked better than drugs, diet and exercise in causing a remission of Type 2 diabetes in overweight people whose blood sugar was out of control, leading some experts to call for greater use of surgery in treating the disease. But the studies were small and relatively short, lasting under two years.

The latest study, published in the journal Obesity Surgery, tracked thousands of diabetics who had gastric bypass surgery for more than a decade. It found that many people whose diabetes at first went away were likely to have it return. While weight regain is a common problem among those who undergo bariatric surgery, regaining lost weight did not appear to be the cause of diabetes relapse. Instead, the study found that people whose diabetes was most severe or in its later stages when they had surgery were more likely to have a relapse, regardless of whether they regained weight.

“Some people are under the impression that you have surgery and you’re cured,” said Dr. Vivian Fonseca, the president for medicine and science for the American Diabetes Association, who was not involved in the study. “There have been a lot of claims about how wonderful surgery is for diabetes, and I think this offers a more realistic picture.”

The findings suggest that weight loss surgery may be most effective for treating diabetes in those whose disease is not very advanced. “What we’re learning is that not all diabetic patients do as well as others,” said Dr. David E. Arterburn, the lead author of the study and an associate investigator at the Group Health Research Institute in Seattle. “Those who are early in diabetes seem to do the best, which makes a case for potentially earlier intervention.”

One of the strengths of the new study was that it involved thousands of patients enrolled in three large health plans in California and Minnesota, allowing detailed tracking over many years. All told, 4,434 adult diabetics were followed between 1995 and 2008. All were obese, and all underwent Roux-en-Y operations, the most popular type of gastric bypass procedure.

After surgery, about 68 percent of patients experienced a complete remission of their diabetes. But within five years, 35 percent of those patients had it return. Taken together, that means that most of the subjects in the study, about 56 percent — a figure that includes those whose disease never remitted — had no long-lasting remission of diabetes after surgery.

The researchers found that three factors were particularly good predictors of who was likely to have a relapse of diabetes. If patients, before surgery, had a relatively long duration of diabetes, had poor control of their blood sugar, or were taking insulin, then they were least likely to benefit from gastric bypass. A patient’s weight, either before or after surgery, was not correlated with their likelihood of remission or relapse.

In Type 2 diabetes, the beta cells that produce insulin in the pancreas tend to wear out as the disease progresses, which may explain why some people benefit less from surgery. “If someone is too far advanced in their diabetes, where their pancreas is frankly toward the latter stages of being able to produce insulin, then even after losing a bunch of weight their body may not be able to produce enough insulin to control their blood sugar,” Dr. Arterburn said.

Nonetheless, he said it might be the case that obese diabetics, even those whose disease is advanced, can still benefit from gastric surgery, at least as far as their quality of life and their risk factors for heart disease and other complications are concerned.

“It’s not a surefire cure for everyone,” he said. “But almost universally, patients lose weight after weight loss surgery, and that in and of itself may have so many health benefits.”
