It's an age-old question that is no longer valid in one of the biggest cities in this country; "Paper or Plastic?"

Los Angeles has banned plastic grocery bags and will start charging for paper.

BYOB I guess.

I mentioned on the Tuesday PhilCast that the most-watched Johnny Carson episode ever was the one where Tiny Tim got married live on the show.

I also mentioned that I remembered having an old photo of me and Tiny Tim from a morning show interview I did with him in the studio.

Well, it's a photo of an old photo but it's all I've got for you...

The old 1968 Crestliner fired up and ran so good we were able to take Handy Andy on his first-ever tube adventure.

The only problem was that the sly dog out-foxed me. As he grew more confident with himself back there my plan was of course to nail it and dump him right in front of the people watching at our place. He jumped tube before I could ever do it. Smart guy...knows me too well I guess.

RAINing on Friday PhilCast

The drummer with the internationally-known Beatles tribute band RAIN who has Wisconsin ties will join me on the PhilCast today in the first hour.

I saw these guys earlier this spring when they played Milwaukee and it was a fantastic show.

If you like the Beatles at all I would suggest getting to the PAC in Appleton for a show. They're doing three, one Friday night and two on Saturday.

The cool thing about the concert is that RAIN both sounds and LOOKS just like the Beatles, and they walk through the various stages of the legendary band, from Ed Sullivan video clips to feeling like you are at Shea Stadium's concert, to the psychedelic Beatles when they perform songs the Beatles never did live. In fact, RAIN has been together longer than the actual Beatles. It should be a fun interview and a solid concert to attend.

Highway or Freeway?

Will someone please tell me what all the fuss is about regarding the future of Highway 41?

All this week public meetings are being held to talk about the advantages of making the biggest route into our neck of the woods a freeway rather than a highway.

Now aside from the cost of putting up those green and white signs telling travelers they're on a freeway (at a cost to taxpayers) what's the big diff? Why bother? Isn't HIGHWAY 41 already for the most part to the standards of what a freeway is anyway?

Tomorrow there will be a meeting here in the Fox Valley about this and at some point this week we'll get someone on the PhilCast to talk about making the change. Whoever it is, maybe he or she can change my mind on this because right now I'm not feeling it.

Well it's back to the old routine today now that my week of being a beach bum has come to an end.

I'm a HUGE fan of the show and when Frankie and Mike stop to rummage through a place in Wisconsin it's all the better. Such was the case last season when they dubbed this junk collector from Waterford, WI Hippie Tom.

Then in a later episode they bumped into Hippie Tom at Sturgis. Well, ever since the TV spot Hippie Tom has become somewhat of a celeb.

He has an amazing collection of collections....stuff....junk....treasures....call it what you will.

We'll chat about what it was like being a part of the popular show on the History Channel, and how his life has changed since being dubbed Hippie Tom.

So upon arriving home Wednesday night our dog Gabby discovered a rather large hole in the front lawn. Seems she got a bit fired up by the smell of something in there. Sure enough, some baby something-or-others the size of a mouse were squirming around in there. They are obviously newborns about the size of a small mouse, so they can't be baby mice...too big already. I have a guess as to what they are though. I'll talk about it on the Thursday PhilCast show. And in addition to the mama mourning dove still sitting on the nest outside my back door there is a new winged player with another nest just a few feet away now. The animals theme continues on the show today because Neenah city fathers met to talk about new pet restrictions there and Appleton city fathers are putting together plans on what to do about raising chickens in the city.

Clark & Clunk

It's Hump Day on the PhilCast and among other things I've got planned, we'll be talking about Clark Howard today. Clark comes to Appleton next week with WHBY as his host once again.

Dave Edwards of the morning show will be joining us on the PhilCast today to talk about ticket sales for next week's event.

So I figured as long as we're talking Clark I would go into my personal achieves and pull out my classic Clunk Hubbard bit. In a previous radio life there was one time when the Brewers' game ended just a tad early and the afternoon show host said he didn't start until three. So I came up with the idea of taking calls as Clark's cousin to kill a little time.

And listeners started calling too. Funny thing is that Clark visited that station a couple years later and I played this bit for him. He was in tears he was laughing so hard. Clark's a great guy, both on and off the mic from what I have seen of him. So listen for a little classic Clunk Hubbard on the show today.

And we're done at 5:00 today also, making room then for the start of Brewers' pre-game.

And we ended up having a great dinner Tuesday night at PhilCast sponsor "The Red Ox Seafood and Steakhouse" in Appleton.

I tried a rack of cajun-spiced ribs with a BBQ sauce that the chef sweetened just a bit for me because A) That's how I like it. B) That's how they roll at the Red Ox!

There was so much food I couldn't even finish the entire rack.

Mrs. Biggest, my wife Sandy had her first experience at the "RO" and chose a pan-fried walleye the size of the state of Maine. While "Reggie the Producer" went bold with some Russian kabobs with a special sauce that rocked.

If you stop there (and you need to eat there) say hi to the owner John and let him know you support him in part because he supports the PhilCast. That's how all this is supposed to work after all.

Coming up on the Thursday PhilCast you'll hear from someone who met Dick Clark in person because Lips LaBelle will join me in studio for his weekly Thursday visit.

Lips met Dick Clark at an event years ago and Lips will talk all about it today at 4:30-ish on the show.

Lips is also just back from vacation so I'm sure he'll have a few stories from his Florida adventures last week.

And then we'll chat up the usual Hollywood news and gossip in that half hour.

Also today, I've been seeing a LOT of a certain type of butterfly around this week for some reason. I mentioned something about it on Twitter and listener Paul K. was kind enough to send me a photo, because he's been seeing a lot of them around too.

This is exactly what they look like.

I've seen groups of them, 4-6 at a time flitting around the flower beds that are coming up.

For some reason they are just plentiful right now it seems.

To tweet or not to tweet?

To tweet or not to tweet, that is the question today on the PhilCast.

There is an interesting debate taking place across the country regarding the question of people being allowed to use Twitter in the courtroom.

On the one hand some judges say it can be distracting to the jurors and could lead to information going out to them that they shouldn't see. But on the other hand reporters ask how tweeting is any more distracting than taking notes.

Right now there is no rule that covers this and judges are making decisions as they go from case to case. Some even allow photos to be taken as long as no member of the jury is in any picture.

Should people/reporters have the right to tweet in the courtroom or should we just be telling everyone to turn everything off while they are in a court of law? Heck, some jurors have even been tweeting during the trial they are sitting in on.

We'll discuss on the show Tuesday afternoon.

I'll also have an Olympic update today. Plus, the freakish new diet that brides are using to be able to fit into their wedding gowns.

50 years ago today this handsome guy took over the news desk at CBS television and would become the most trusted man in America.

How times have changed. How many people actually even watch a network newscast each evening now like we used to do.

And how many people could even name the anchors that now have the job on the big three networks?

Also today, how the heck did I miss a local beauty pageant over the weekend in the Valley? The countdown to June's Miss Wisconsin pageant is on. Is there still time to add a celebrity radio talk show host as a judge????

No secret that I'm in a club that feels bacon just makes everything taste better. But on a sundae?

Yup...Burger King is testing out its new bacon sundae in the Nashville area.

Too bad, because if it were available around here I would try one.

The combination of chocolate sweet and salty is nothing new and is a winner with me.

One of my favorite treats at the Wisconsin State Fair each year is to buy myself a small bag of milk chocolate-covered potato chips. Sweet and salty at the same time just seems to work for me.
