The whole problem with this is that Google is penalizing the webmaster. Instead they should be penalizing the web host company. There should be some sort of grace period for new websites not really aware of the differences in host companies. The grace period would be something like 'Once your contract runs out with this company, then you must place your site on a new web host or else you will reap the penalty'. This way, it would make the owners of these slow page loading web hosts to either step up and supply relevant equipment necessary to upload clients web pages faster or go out of business because word is out that their servers are too slow for Google's standards. Penalizing the 'newbie' webmaster is wrong in this instance. Sorry...just an opinion.

I really think they should market the phrase "You can do that with Android". The problem with apple is that when it works, it's great - but as you've found when it stops working it really isn't great at all. Apple keep you locked in (is there an easy way to export your contacts/sms etc?) so that it's actually easier to stay with them than to move to a different piece of hardware.

Anyway, I know this comment is late and all your woes are sorted out now, but you should give Android a proper go - it's amazing what you *can* do with it.

I find it pretty funny that the reps keep telling you to jailbreak your phone. I've been to the apple store here in the US a bunch of times and they've never ever hinted at that.

But I think this is clearly a case where policies (as misguided as they may be) override common sense. It looks like your only hope is if you can get the attention of someone really high up at AT&T / Apple to actually do this for you.

Until then...jailbreaking is pretty easy to do and you can always say that they left you no choice.

Android is clearly outselling Apple at this point so maybe Apple will do something about it (like open up their phones to more networks).

I feel the same way without even having a reason as big and valid as yours! Apple products are well designed and have great interfaces but they run a dictatorship as far as what a user can do with all that cool technology. It's really sad that they forced me to consider Android which, while open, has a far inferior UI. If the demand is high enough (clearly it is) and a product/technology exists... people will get to it so it would be smart of Apple to adjust their business model so I can stop buying clothes and get some new tech gear. :)

Phil, did you check with O2 or Orange directly? According to this apple support doc it seems like the new carrier might be the one that performs the unlock. In the UK they list O2 and Orange as providing unlocking services, but not Tesco and Vodafone.

@Justin G. Decker
The main lesson we learned is that performance is a first-order design goal. We've done two things to get at this.

#1 In Agile parlance, we've made sure to add both unit and system performance to our "definition of done". That helps a lot. We aren't finished until we are "done" with performance.

#2 You get what you measure. We've made certain to instrument the performance of our systems to a ridiculous extent. That allows us to watch it closely as and if it changes. Essentially, we've designed in this ability to measure. Without the visibility we can't manage the result.

All that and we still don't always have a total handle on performance. Do you have any advice from your teams?

It's a great point and illustrative of a difficult strategic problem related to performance testing in Agile. IMHO, performance testing is unique in it's own needs, some congruent with Agile practices, and others (like entire site testing) more needful of a waterfall phase just prior to release.

Now that you have had this experience, do you have any ideas as to how you will address this type of problem going forward?
