Friday night I met up with Dain Saint of Cipher Prime at Vesuvio in South Philly. When I got there they were shooting some pool and had had a few drinks already. Earlier that day EA Games released the iPhone version of their game Auditorium! If you get it you can also enter a contest to win a Flash version of Auditorium but submitting a picture of you beating 4:3! [Announcement]

Except for PBR, all the beer is $4 a piece. While this certainly is convenient it limits the types of beer they would serve, such as no strong dark Belgian's. They did however have Leffe Blonde and a good selection of locals including Sly Fox and Victory. This was the first time I've ever had Sly Fox on tap, despite my proximity to their Phoenixville location, and it was quite good. I find the bottles I get from Sly Fox to be rather inconsistent, even when purchased together.

Sunday I spent the evening with Maya and Andrea at the Eisley/Say Anything show at the TLA. Beforehand I went to Manny Brown's while the opening acts played. The door time was 7 so I had some time to take in a few drinks. Plus concerts are a more fun after a few drinks.

After Eisley's great set I went back to Manny's as I was tired of some kid whose attempts to mosh amounted to hitting me in the back repeatedly.

Last night a friend and I ventured to Morton's for a wine tasting event with pairings of chocolate provided by Éclat Chocolate of West Chester.

At 7PM we were shown to the private room of Morton's and after we got the pre-paid receipt we were handed a class of champagne. For the next 40 minutes or so delicious h'orderves were available until the hosts gave a short introduction to the event.

I listed the chocolates in my order of preference but I'm in no way able to even compare the wines. All of the wines were delicious even though my friend didn't care for any of the reds and I was able to finish his glasses. Altogether, a great experience for only $35 and I will surely be looking out for the next event.

Philip worked as a web developer for a web-startup called Songkick.com
in London. He maintained plugins for various media players and designed a cross-platform application and API.
Courses and/or topics covered in the curriculum that were helpful on the job:
CS 260 (Data Structures)
CS 265 (Advance Programming Tools and Techniques)
CS 350 (Software Design)

Can you give specific examples of things you did that made use of some of those topics?
While it’s not really mentioned until 350, design patterns are part of any good software project and when you’re working in a team you need to know them. Coming into the project I had to learn the system, which was full of patterns, and add new pieces. The most significant time was implementing an API for our web site in a way that worked well with the existing system but could be easily extended in the future.
Can you explain a memorable moment for you at your co-op, whether it be while working or about your experience?
My company completely paid for my stay in London. They were completely understanding and helpful in allowing me to explore Europe and even make trips back to the US when I needed to. Work wise, I designed a cross-platform application in multiple languages that had to work with a standard server API that I also implemented. It was the most significant project I’ve worked on and will also be the most widely distributed one when it is released in April 2009.
Why do you think co-ops are important? What have you gained from your co-op?
Normally co-ops are mentioned as a way to help prepare you for a job. What I don’t see mentioned is how the co-op also affects your remaining time at school. Classes don’t always include great explanations of how what you’re learning will help you in the future. On a co-op you get to see how well you know something, learn new things, and become more prepared for the classes you have left.
