AGIT POP! Post-Its To The Post Apocalypse

Secret Fresh’s year opener for 2012 is an exhibit of poster art created by Manila’s top and up and coming graphic designers and artists who also venture into illustration. The show opening this January 8 Sunday at 6 PM is entitled AGIT POP! Post-Its To The Post Apocalypse and showcases their poster designs which imagines them as message boards to a future world promising utopic visions in the aftermath of an imagined anticipated holocaust as prodded by the much Mayan calendar footnoting of the year 2012. Reversing the doomdsday prophesies, the posters present instead a possibility beyond such eventuality, speculating on the premise of a promised renewed world or the unfulfillment of such in a rather dystopia.

AGIT POP! Will be on view till the 27th of January. Secret Fresh is at Ronac Art Center, Ortigas Avenue, Greenhills, San Juan, MM. Secret Fresh is open from Mondays to Saturdays from 2 to 10PM and Sundays from 1 to 6PM.

MANILA, Philippines - William Shakespeare is regarded as the greatest global dramatist ever. His works has prompted so many adaptations and retellings and has been articulated in many different forms and languages. However, we Filipinos have never seen one of his greatest plays, King Lear, done in graceful liquid Tagalog prose - until now.

After the back-to-back success of Philippine Educational Theater Association's (PETA) Shakespeare rap musical 'William' and its box office comedy-drama 'Care Divas', PETA opens 2012 with another brave opus: the first-ever Filipino adaptation of William Shakespeare's evocative masterpiece, King Lear.

Set in a post-nuclear world that is strangely contemporary and familiar, Shakespeare's King Lear receives a fitting, royal makeover, fashioned by a pool of Filipino theater giants.

National Artist for Literature, Bienvenido Lumbera translates the text into prose while retaining the rhythm, texture and elegant brutality of Shakespeare's tragedy. Acclaimed theater director, Nonon Padilla then turns the epic classic into a modern-dress contemporary family drama, while World Stage Design Awardee Gino Gonzales establishes the dark aesthetic, settings and styles of the play.

Exciting, suspenseful and virtually violent, PETA's 'Haring Lear' retains Shakespeare's beautiful and devastating themes of the disintegration of family solidarity, running the gamut of love, madness, death and sacrifice.

'Haring Lear' features a traditional Shakespeare all-male cast helmed by theater stalwart Teroy Guzman who plays the role of the aging monarch, Haring Lear. The rest of the cast includes: Gary Lim (Regan), Nor Domingo (Goneril), Abner Delina (Cordelia), Jay Gonzaga (Edmundo), Myke Salomon (Edgardo), Jack Yabut (Gloster), Josel Reyes (Kent), George De Jesus (Oswaldo), Jeff Hernandez (Duke ng Cornualles), Renante Bustamante (Duke ng Albanya), Fredyl Hernandez (Duke ng Burgonia), Angel Moratilla (Hari ng Francia) and Ernie Cloma (Matandang Lalaki).

'Haring Lear' runs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from January 27 until March 4, 2012 at The PETA Theater Center. For tickets, contact 7256244, 4100821-22, 0917-5765400,petatheater@gmail.com, www.petatheater.com.

We are pleased to inform you that pelikuLAB-Samasining, in cooperation with UPLB Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts, is organizing PELIKUL2URA: The Calabarzon Film Festival 2012, which will be held on Feb. 22-24 at UPLB. Its first edition was held successfully last year in February also at UPLB.

In line with the second Calabarzon-wide film festival, we are now accepting entries for the short film competition, and we are inviting your institution to participate in this historic event by sending films and delegates. May we also ask for your assistance in disseminating this announcement in your institution?

The winners of the competition will receive cash prize, plaque and certificate. There is also a chance that your film submissions will be screened in NCCA’s Cinemarehiyon 2012 to be held in Bacolod City in Feb. together with films from other regions prior to the festival.

The deadline for submission of entries and delegate registration is on Dec. 31 at 11:00 pm. Due to budget constraints, we will not be able to shoulder accommodation of delegates, but we are currently raising funds to subsidize accommodation expenses.

It had been 36 years ago since the historic match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier for the heavyweight title that was fought long and hard at Araneta Coliseum in 1975. Dubbed Thrilla in Manila, the epic bout had the two long standing rivals fighting fiercely for the belt and earning the victor a mall named after him. The mall became a de facto landmark for a brewing underground of old skool skaters playing hooky back in the 1980s leaving skid marks on railings and concrete steps and benches with mall guards on their heels quelling in vain the harbinger of anarchic hypertext that will eventually occupy blocks of the increasingly dense metropolitan Manila. From juvenile proclamations of being to anti-authoritarian self-righteous shout-outs, they all evolved into a symbiotic interplay of skin and structure surface and interface, landscape and context, text and meta-text in a parallel development of graffiti and street art culture here in Manila. Bouts are now fought territorially, on the perennially grimy surfaces competing attention with tarp billboards and civic sponsored public art, and tags and spray painted marks fiercely creep in in the frenzy of this hypertextualized city.

December 11 Sunday at Secret Fresh marks the reunion not between ferocious rivals but between long time collaborators to the city they keep coming back to where they have left their marks. Tilt and Mist, French graffiti artists based in France had been coming to Manila since 2004. Tilt’s trademark bubble fonts and Mist’s pointy-edged vivid tags had been spread out alongside the marks of local graffiti artists in Intramuros, A. Bonificao, San Juan, Cubao and in the wherewithals of rundown walls of metropolitan Manila which had been otherwise whitewashed or plastered by campaign posters or spraypainted over by other graffiti crew. They have also been collaborating with Movement 69, a small loose collective of local street artists composed of Whoop, A.lien, Tripp 69, Exld, Egg Fiasco and Nemo.

The exhibit Thrilla Manila will be featuring Tilt’s and Mist’s paintings and giclee prints incorporating Filipino icons with their graffiti style as what Tilt had done with the Philippine flag which was formed with Filipino text written in his bubble style font in such a manner that reinforces iconographic meaning with his interspersed bubble text, while Mist’s more abstract calligraphic style is a ponderous exercise on font as an organic form evolving into figures with distinct personalities.

Tilt and Mist’s collaborations extend beyond massive wall bombings to customizing art toys and an ice cream cart specially built for their exhibit at Secret Fresh.

Tilt and Mist is mostly identified with old school style graffiti .

Mist has been in the graffiti scene since the late 1980s and was part of the graffiti crew Control of Paris in 1992. With a formal background in design and a stint at a toy company, he has also developed his own character Debilz. His style, the ‘devil style’ is characterized by big outlines, vibrant hues, horns and pointy-limbed figures. His lettering likewise exhibits the same pointy features consequently having a life of its own and becoming characters themselves. He is being represented by Galerie Le Feuvre and Speerstra gallery in Europe. And spends most of his time in Montpeliier

Tilt is an internationally recognized graffiti artist originating from Toulouse in South France. A self-declared “graffiti fetishist”, he learned the trade in the streets and on trains as a youngster. In the time since he did his first tags on a skateboard ramp back in 1988, his ensuing career has been nourished and influenced by extensive travel. Inspirational journeys have seen Tilt exhibit and leave his mark as far and wide as the USA, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand,Laos, Taiwan, China, Canada, Philippines, Indonesia, the Maldives, and throughout Europe. He designed one of the watches collaborated on by Kidrobot and Swatch which was launched this year at Secret Fresh.

Thrilla Manila will open on December 11 Sunday at 6 PM and will be on view until January 3, 2012.

Secret Fresh is at Ronac Art Center, Ortigas Avenue, Greenhills, San Juan, MM.
Secret Fresh is open from Mondays to Saturdays from 2 to 10PM and Sundays from 1 to 6PM.
For more information about the show you may contact 570 9815 loc 7 or email secretfreshinfo@gmail.com or check them online for updates through their website http://secretfresh.net/ or thru Facebook http://www.facebook.com/secretfresh or http://www.twitter.com/freshmanila.

Pinoy artist Jake Catah lights up the town this December 9, 2011, 6pm with his 5th solo exhibit, “Out of Town” at the Ysobel Art Gallery, 2nd floor, The Shops at Serendra, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

Catah, 36, is a self-described Fauvist. His latest work reflects the colorful vibrancy of his favored genre but with tinges of surrealism thrown in for good measure.

“I suppose there are hints of Dali in there,” says Catah, referring to the Spanish surrealist painter. “But it’s all Filipino as far as I’m concerned. I may be influenced by western styles but my aim is to preserve Filipino culture and traditions through my artwork. It’s one of my missions as a Filipino artist - to uphold Filipino dignity.”

“Out of Town” is certainly Filipino. Its focus is the all-familiar road trip, something Pinoys can readily identify with. From twisting rides through the Philippine countryside to mind-bending airplane rides through the urban sky, Catah captures the quintessential Pinoy activity – traveling – with a deft eye and incisive heart.

“I create moments I would like to cherish,” he explains. “And I want my viewers to feel a positive outlook in life too – which is why my paintings are vividly colored and subjects are family and love. With ‘Out of Town’, however, I’m not only making feel-good moments. I’m exploring the theme of traveling and movement, whether it’s the physical experience of driving with the wind in your hair, or the spiritual change we all experience as we live and journey through life.”

Catah’s work, like the theme of his exhibit, is also evolving. “I’ve been painting for 12 years now. It’s all I do. And I’m happy for the progress and success I’ve been given. ‘Out of Town’ is probably a reflection of my own voyage as a human being, my own travels up steep hills and down winding roads. It’s a journey I’m enjoying and I hope others have as much fun experiencing my work as I have creating it.”

“Out of Town” runs from the 9th to the 22nd of December. For inquiries, please call/email 09285071117, 09332227952 or ysobelartgallery@yahoo.com.

About: Ysobel Art Gallery started last March 2011. It is home to a vast collection of art work from various established and upcoming artists. Its collection leans more towards contemporary art.

PAF will feature workshops, exhibitions, forums and performances by practitioners of the arts and will take place all over the country. Eminent local and foreign artists will take part in this biggest and grandest month-long cultural gathering.

The annual celebration of National Arts Month began with the signing of Presidential Proclamation 683 in 1991, declaring February as National Arts Month. Through the years, the NCCA in partnership with various private and government agencies have organized events and activities to highlight Filipino artistic excellence and creativity.

Popular television and film icons Boy Abunda and Dingdong Dantes have lent their stellar power for the 2011 festival as NCCA Art and Youth Ambassadors, respectively. For 2012, they will be joined by Piolo Pascual as NCCA Culture Ambassador to further popularize the festival.

Next year’s PAF will emphasize the interface of traditional and contemporary art forms and genres. A festive launching is set at the Rizal Park, to be highlighted by a kite making workshop, kite flying, and sumptuous samplings of the seven arts. Closing the PAF is the Ani ng Dangal awarding ceremony that will recognize the contribution of individuals and institutions to the promotion of Filipino cultural heritage.

During the entire month of February, the public is invited to come and witness the seven arts committees present their flagship projects.

Architecture

The Committee on Architecture and Allied Arts, headed by Architect Gerard Lico, will be holding several exhibitions, conferences, lectures and competitions to mark the celebration. The exhibitions will revolve around themes and topics on the morphology of Filipino buildings, Philippine styles, the works of IP Santos, and discourses on design. These events are under the “Achi[types/texts] 2012” project. Some of the exhibits include “Salumpuwit, Bangko, Silya, Atbp.: A History of Chairs in the Philippines”; “La Vida Verde: The Landscape Architecture of National Artist IP Santos”; and “Imeldific Modernity: A Dictatorship of Style.” There will also be a design competition on architectural innovation for architecture students, as well as conferences, and lectures.

Cinema

The National Committee on Cinema, headed by Dr. Miguel Rapatan, will be holding CinemaRehiyon 4 in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental. Featuring 27 foreign and local artists working on a range of media, the exhibit is presently on view until January 29, 2012.

Nothing to Declare is a project spearheaded by Flaudette May Datuin from the Department of Art Studies of the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman; Precious Leaño of the Filipino Visual Arts and Design Rights Organization; and Josephine Turalba of the School of Fine Arts and Design of Philippine Women’s University. Nothing to Declare aims to contribute to discourse on migration, the movement not just of people across borders, but also of forms and realities across time and space. The project focuses on those who have nothing to declare, whose marginality is a source of intervention and strength. The visual discourse and presentations began at the Blanc Compound as the first venue, with the Yuchengco Museum and the UP Vargas Museum following through until January 2012.

Nothing to Declare at Yuchengco Museum is curated by guest curator Claro Ramirez, Jr., and showcases the works of participating international artists Mateo Amaral (Argentina), Dana Cojbuc (France), Ding Ren (Netherlands/USA/China), Dada Docot (Philippines/Canada), Hillerbrand + Magsamen (USA), Khaled Hafez (Egypt), Sol Kjok (Norway/USA), Thomas Kutschker (Germany), Sebastian Mahaluf (Chile), Nerea Martinez de Lecea (UK), Minou Norouzi (Canada), Ruth Schreiber (Israel), Martin Sims (Australia), Motohide Taguchi (Japan), Sonja Van Kerkhoff (The Netherlands), and Quint Welters (USA). From the Philippines, the participating artists are Michael Bacol (Philippines), Errol Balcos (Philippines), Paulo Chavez (Philippines), Joey Cobcobo (Philippines), Raquel de Loyola (Philippines), Tony Gonzales (Philippines), Nikki Luna(Philippines), Tes Pasola (Philippines), Hanna Pettyjohn (Philippines), Alma Quinto (Philippines), Noel Soler Cuizon(Philippines), and Josephine Turalba (Philippines).

Painting, sculpture, photography, installations, sound art, and video show the array of artists’ ideas, while some collaborative work has been done with partner communities. The exhibit is also a starting point for various activities and programs, such as art educators’ training workshops, an essay writing contest for college students, education guides, and docent tours.

Nothing to Declare at Yuchengco Museum runs until January 29, 2012. The museum is located at RCBC Plaza, corner Ayala and Sen. Gil Puyat Avenues, Makati City. Museum hours are Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call (632) 889-1234 or visit http://nothing2declare2011.wordpress.com/.

Tomas Morato Quezon City.

Vignettes

It is the instance of creation that satisfies a young artist’s yearning for a union with art. It signals certainty and welcomes his/her desire to make the process an integral part of a life linked to art. This instance adheres to a prospect of revelation, piece by piece, creation after creation, an episode after another and then another…then another…

To forward the next instances, the young artist re/constructs from the traces of other instances from his/her mentor, the masters, colleagues, and from his/her own trails. There are attempts to imprint a style derived from history, or an encampment of one’s character and aspiration, or an improved version of a previous work. The act is to follow the tracks to make sure the next instances are as fulfilling, if not more, than the first. Yet each act is distinct and memorable.

In this exhibit, you’ll see beyond portraits, still lifes, landscapes and patterns, a collection of stories of discovery. It is a conjunction of multiple parcels of narratives that mark beginnings continuing to a life-long height of creation. And the objects – such tangible scenes of these trails, go further than a viewer’s sight, thought or even emotions. The denouement awaits.

Vignettes: YAS Students’ Exhibit
Chef’s Bistro, Sct. Gandia Quezon City
November 26 to December 5, 2011

The Young Artists’ Studio (YAS) is a venue for young artists to learn art production at an early age. YAS is managed by art practitioners with a vision to develop young artists who will contribute to the art community in the near future. YAS believes the art is a powerful tool to influence communities, improve lives, and transform the society.

For more information about the exhibit, please contact YAS through the following:

Art Verite’

25 Nov. – 12 Dec. 2011

Renowned glass sculptor Ramon Orlina’s latest show at the Art Verite on the second floor of Serendra at Bonifacio High Street, brings his art to an even higher level after the completion of his outstanding monument, the Quattro Mondial, at the UST grounds. Although there is no clear juncture before and after this unique achievement, there is in his latest work, however, a new sparkling elan, a fresh release of self-confidence, and a joyous surge of creativity in the glass art that he has now unquestionably mastered.

Orlina’s art is home grown. He did not have to travel abroad to realize his dream to be a glass artist; he started in the Philippines where, after 30 years, he has achieved his national and international identity as the master of the art of glass in our time.

This show is curated by Ruel Caasi.

Shining Through recent works by Ramon Orlina opens 25 November, Friday 6:30 pm at Art Verite’ 2C - 05, 2F Shops at Serendra, Bonifacio High Global, Taguig City, Philippines. The show runs until 12 December 2011.

For inquiries, contact us at +63 29151982 or email us info@artverite.net

As in all of his previous shows, Javier represents his highly personal stories in raw form, intentionally eschewing conventional methods of creating art, unafraid of consequences and uncaring of critique.

“It's the beginning of the beginning and the end of an era, and so much more than an artwork. It's my portfolio and describing it is describing me. Everything and anything must come to an end, in the end it doesn’t even matter because new life will start to emerge, just like a finished artworX, to begin a new one,” according to Javier.

What the audience may view as a vulgar explosion of illustrations may provoke or shock, but the artist stays true to his personal aesthetics in creating pieces that are filled with found images and conjured characters that inhabit his world and his life, rife with the saturation of mass media, iconography, pop culture, angst, rebellion against the system and mundane occurrences. Everything is discordant with the numerous portraits, monsters, animals, and humanoids layered with text, drips, sprays, brushwork and patterns, showing how random absurdities can be designed to disturb and disrupt our safe and sanitized lives.

An old carpet from the friendly neighborhood secondhand store is given new life as art with the addition of fabric cartoon characters snipped from old shirts and sewn into it, interacting with the central figure of a child reading with a lion. The cartoons mock, stare vacantly into space and stay cute, reeking of bubblegum humor, teasing the utter validity of the carpet as a household accessory. Monsters pile up like totem poles, premonitions of projects that are yet to come. A love letter is disguised as a mélange of text and ultra bright fluorescent colors, lamenting the dark memories of a love lost. A figure is built out of objects and faces encountered in the everyday, walking with a thought bubble filled with a babble of comic dialogues. Children’s wooden blocks are transformed into robots, with massage balls sprouting faces and metal legs.

It is very much a visual representation of Sid Vicious’ celebrated performance of My Way, where a drugged-up, droning, creepy monotone evolves into screams, bursts of vocal energy and gunshots. Some members of the audience might be unnerved, maybe even appalled, but they clap anyway, probably because in all its senselessness, it makes perfect sense. And this end is just the start of a new beginning.

Neil Arvin Javier graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Technological University of the Philippines in Manila. He was a semi-finalist at both the Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards and Metrobank Art Competition in 2003, and a finalist in the Royal Elastics Graffiti Competition in 2004 as well as in the Epson Photo Imaging Exposition and Manila, My Manila Photography Competition in 2005. He won second place in the first Philippine Drawing Society Art Competition in 2004.

(Kaye O’Yek, Manila, November 2011)

The exhibit will have its opening cocktails on November 13, Sunday at 6PM.

The exhibit opening will be complemented by a performance by Buntisan festival founder and pioneer sound artist Lirio Salvador of Elemento.

The exhibit will be on view until the 6th of December 2011.

Secret Fresh is at the Ground Floor of Ronac Art Center, Ortigas Avenue, North Greenhills, San Juan, MM. In relation to this, there is a call for the region's filmmakers to go back to their roots and tell their home stories rather than flock to the city and forget the stories that nurtured their imagination.

A filmmaker may explore any of the following categories in their work for the festival:

1. FOLK CULTURE/HERITAGE
Film submissions may be based on local folk culture, which includes, but is not limited to, topics such as folk practices, rituals, traditions, beliefs (spiritual, religious or superstitious), folklore (riddles, stories, songs), legends and myths, some of which may still be believed by locals at present.

2. HISTORICAL ADAPTATIONS
While folk culture is a product of imaginative minds, historical events are a product of actual encounters, not only in the past but also in recent times. Film submissions may be based on actual historical events, well-known or not. It may be a story of an individual, a local hero, a family in town, or the community itself.

3. THE STORY OF A PLACE
A film submission may focus on a place, its character revealed by the lives of people in it. It may be as small as a barrio, an island or as big as a town or province. It may also be a street, an alley, a corner, a crossing and the stories forged in these spaces.

4. MODERN REALITIES
Modern realities may be depicted in the films submitted to the festival. It may tackle everyday stories of children, men and women, family or community related to broader social issues, such as poverty and violence in all forms, environmental issues, developmental issues, etc. The idea is to contextualize local narratives.

5. ADVOCACIES
Film submissions may tackle political issues significant to a specific locale. It may be a struggle of a marginalized sector of your province--farmers, fisher folks, elderly, women, gays and lesbians, children and youth. This category might overlap with other categories.

Note: These categories are only guidelines. Film submissions are encouraged to explore these themes, but we don't mean to limit the filmmakers' imagination.

Below are the festival competition's rules and guidelines.

RULES AND GUIDELINES FOR THE SHORT FILM COMPETITION

1.

MANILA, Philippines - Philippine Educational Theater Association's (PETA) 'Care Divas' remains a popular contender among the must-see plays of the year. The comedy musical penned by Palanca award-winning playwright Liza Magtoto was set to have a limited thirty-six-show run from February-March 2011. However word-of-mouth spread like wildfire and requests for more shows flooded.

Since then, one additional show led to another and barely nine months since it opened, 'Care Divas' has had sixty-nine shows - more than double the number of the play's scheduled performances!

As a Christmas treat to the fans of the musical, and as a tribute to all OFW's coming home this Christmas, PETA is producing additional fourteen performances of 'Care Divas' this December.

Fans and first time viewers will be treated to a limited engagement - a night of music, laughter and explosive production numbers that will transport them to a remote Israeli Tel Aviv club, where daytime gay caregivers transform into fabulous divas at night!

Don't miss the last fourteen performances of 'Care Divas' at the PETA Theater Center (No.5 Eymard Drive, New Manila, Quezon City) on December 1 and 8; 8:00PM, December 2, 3, 4, 9,10, 11; 3:00PM / 8:00PM. For inquiries and ticket reservations, contact PETA Marketing at Tel. No. 725-6244, 410-0821 or 0917-5642433, petatheater@gmail.com.
Be able to adjust to different travel or shooting environments when photographing for work or personal fulfillment.

The workshop, which combines lectures and hands-on sessions, aims to teach participants how to give their travel photos a unique and lasting quality. It will deal with the following topics:
· Travel photography today and how digital advances have influenced the market
· Knowing the essentials of travel photography
· Learning the photojournalistic style of travel photography
· Researching your trip/Travel light
· Returning from the trip: The no-photo-editing philosophy
· Caring for your camera and other equipment

As an immediate application of the classroom topics, an actual shoot will be conducted where the speaker-photographer will guide each participant and additional shooting tips will be shared.

Requirements
· Working knowledge of digital photography
· Digital SLR camera
· Tripod and other accessories, optional

Venue
Filipinas Heritage Library, Makati Avenue, Ayala Triangle, Makati City (across The Peninsula Manila)

Speaker
Gunther Deichmann is a multi-awarded Australian photographer. He prefers to travel during the worst times of the year creating dramatic results and images seldom seen before. To him, “photography is light and light is photography.” He loves strong colors and contrasts, blending them with plenty of drama. He became a member of the Institute of Australian Professional Photography (IAPP) and achieved 14 merit awards. For more information, please log on to www. http://www.deichmann-photo.com.

Participation fee and discount
P7,000 inclusive of meals during the lecture and photo shoot, transportation, and a certificate. Cash or check payments are accepted at the library or through a BPI bank deposit. Payment through BPI EPS and major credit cards is also accepted.

Due to the limited number of available slots, interested participants are requested to register on or before November 15 by paying at least P2,500 (nonrefundable; full payment is due on the first day of class).* An early bird discount of 5 percent will be given to those who pay in full on or before the deadline (except for credit card payments).

* Payment is transferable to another class if a written notice is given at least five days prior the start of the workshop. This seminar will be held at the Lopez Memorial Museum. China's contribution in terms of ceramics and the distribution in Southeast Asia of these and other Asian ceramics will be discussed. Also included is a general introduction to ceramics (types, terminology, process), and the manufacture, construction, finishing and surface treatment of pottery. Archaeology has helped unearth these items and in terms of underwater archaeology, discussion will focus on its three phases of conserving ceramics from underwater sites.

Research into the Philippines' past has involved looking into pottery and ceramics. Many such samples are in private and museum collections with varying levels of accessibility to the public. While most display excellent preservation in archaeological contexts as stated by Ms Amalia de la Torre of the National Museum, these materials also deteriorate and are damaged. With a better understanding of the materials that embody aspects of our precolonial past, improved means of caring for this tangible cultural heritage can be established. Fee of Php1,500.00 includes lunch and snacks.

The Lopez Memorial Museum is at the ground floor, Benpres Building, Exchange Road corner Meralco Avenue, Pasig City. Museum days and hours are Mondays-Saturdays, 8am-5pm, except holidays.

Rizal translated into Tagalog Friedrich Schiller’s drama Wilhelm Tell, who embodied the values and ideals for which Rizal gave his life. In his lecture on “Jose Rizal and Switzerland,” Ambeth Ocampo will talk about Rizal’s links to Switzerland.

Ambeth Ocampo is a public historian whose research covers the late 19th century Philippines, its art, culture, and the birth of the nation. He writes a widely read editorial column, entitled “Looking Back,” for the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Dr. Ocampo is currently Chairman and Associate Professor of the Department of History in Ateneo de Manila University.

Relations between the Philippines and Switzerland can be traced back to the early 19th century, when Swiss traders, missionaries, and travelers ventured into Southeast Asia. Since the establishment of a Swiss consulate in Manila—the first official representation of Switzerland in Asia—in 1862, exchange between the two countries has flourished. In her lecture on “Switzerland and the Philippines,” Ambassador Maria Theresa Lazaro will discuss the 150 years of diplomatic and trade relations, development cooperation, and cultural exchange between the two countries.

Ambassador Maria Theresa Lazaro is a former ambassador of the Philippines to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Ambassador Lazaro has been with the Department of Affairs for more than 25 years, and her previous posts include the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney, the Philippine Embassy in New York, and the Philippine Embassy in Madrid.

Jose Rizal and Switzerland comes with museum admission (P100 for adults, P50 for students, and P25 for children and senior citizens). Dr. Ocampo’s books on Jose Rizal will be available for sale, and a small reception to meet the speakers follows the program.

As seating is limited, advance registration is recommended. To register, call 889-1234 or emailinfo@yuchengcomuseum.org. Yuchengco Museum is located at RCBC Plaza, corner Ayala and Sen. Gil J. Puyat Avenues, Makati City.

PHOTOGRAPHING CORREGIDOR
October 29-30, 6:30 am assembly with a pre-trip lecture on October 27 at 6-8pm and a post-trip critiquing on November 3 at 6-8pm

Located at the entrance of Manila Bay, Corregidor is a tadpole-shaped island. It is a remnant of a volcano called Corregidor Caldera. Before it became an important island fortress during the Second World War, Corregidor was a small fishing village. Today, the island is a popular tourist spot and historical site, commemorating the heroism of Filipino and American soldiers who bravely held their ground during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines.

Corregidor ruins have been photographed countless times, and this photography trip hopes to provide fresh perspectives in capturing these subjects.
The pre-trip lecture will cover topics such as choosing a subject, finding a good vantage point, adjusting to the different lighting conditions, and knowing what camera and other equipment to bring. To take full advantage of the trip, participants are encouraged to plan ahead and research about the place.

During the trip, the participants will be shooting alongside the speaker-photographer. Additional pointers will be given for participants to capture the experience through their images.
To conclude the photo trip, participants must submit 2-3 photographs (printed in 8"x10") for critiquing. The best photos will be selected and will be exhibited at The Alcove photo gallery.

Requirements
- Digital camera, preferably SLR
- Basic knowledge of photography

Venue
The pre-trip lecture and post trip critiquing will be at the Filipinas Heritage Library, Makati Avenue, Ayala Triangle, Makati City (across from The Peninsula Manila). Assembly for the trip will be at the Sun Cruises ferry terminal, CCP Bay Terminal A, CCP Complex, Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City (near Harbour Square).

Speaker
Jay Alonzo, who loves traveling and photography, is considered one of the best photographer-speakers in the country. He is a photo contributor for Mabuhay magazine, Philippine Airlines' in-flight magazine. His images have also been used in movie posters, billboards, and travelogues. He shares his passion for both travel and photography by teaching novice photographers.

Participation fee and discount
P7,000 inclusive of lecture fee, round-trip ferry transfers, guided island tour, exclusive use of a "Tranvia" bus for the special itinerary, terminal/entrance/shrine fees, meals, and hotel accommodation based on triple sharing (can be upgraded to twin/double sharing for an additional P400 and to single occupancy for an additional P800). Cash or check payments are accepted at the library or through a BPI bank deposit. Payment through BPI EPS and major credit cards is also accepted.

Due to the limited number of available slots, interested participants are requested to register on or before September 29 by paying at least P4,000 (nonrefundable; full payment is due on the first day of class).* An early bird discount of 5 percent will be given to those who pay in full on or before the deadline (except for credit card payments).

* Payment is transferable to another class if a written notice is given at least one month prior the photo trip. Otherwise, a P2,000 no-show penalty will be deducted.
