Viols in Our Schools Joins the Music Institute of Chicago’s Outreach Programs – In 2008, Dr. Phillip W. Serna will join the faculty of the Music Institute of Chicago, where 'Viols in Our Schools' will be an official outreach program of the Early Music department at MIC. MIC is one of only a few community music schools nationally that offers an early music program. In addition to private study on period instruments, chamber music, small group classes, and large ensemble opportunities are also available. The early music faculty guides students toward an appreciation of period styles, with appropriate bows and instruments. Many early music offerings are intergenerational, making classes an experience the entire family can enjoy together. Viols in Our Schools - Viols in Our Schools, organized by Phillip W. Serna, brings the viola da gamba into Chicago area schools. Primarily consisting of day-long residencies, Viols in Our Schools seeks to both entertain and educate young audiences by exposing them to the rich solo literature from the Renaissance, Baroque, and early Classical periods. The Spirit of Gambo Performing with the Newberry Consort 2008-2009 – During the 2008-2009 season, the Spirit of Gambo will be joining the Newberry consort two unique concert programs featuring Jewish Music in English Courts and a concert celebrating the 450^th anniversary of the beginning of the reign of Elizabeth I. The Elizabethan program will consist of English viol consort music, concluding with the 1912 silent movie classic Queen Elizabeth, to which the Newberry Consort will provide the music. Starring an aging but peppy Sarah Bernhardt, this film is shot mostly from afar, as she poses and flings her arms about and seemingly overacts. But watch Bernhardt's face, strain to hear her absent voice, and you can see what a powerhouse she must have been on stage. She herself claimed to be pleased with the result, crying: "I am immortal! Ars Antigua Presents - Christof Graupner (1683-1760) - Overture, GW472

Although the Overture and Chaconne by Christoph Graupner were known to musicologists since the 1950s, it was finally studied, edited, and prepared for performance in 2007 by Kim Clow, an independent music scholar in New York. Kim’s goal is to publish all of Graupner’s neglected orchestral works. Graupner was a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach and was the first choice of the Leipzig town council to be Cantor at St Thomas Church , the post that subsequently went to Bach.

Our program features the modern premiere of the Overture and Chaconne GW472 by Christof Graupner (1683-1760) for viola d’amore, oboe d’amore, traverso d’amore and strings. This performance by Ars Antigua directed by Jerry Fuller features soloists William Bauer, viola d’amore; Joyce Alper, oboe d’amore; and Cuauhtemoc Trejo, traverso d’amore. Although the Overture and Chaconne by Christoph Graupner were known to musicologists since the 1950s, it was finally studied, edited, and prepared for performance in 2007 by Kim Clow, an independent music scholar in New York. Kim’s goal is to publish all of Graupner’s neglected orchestral works. Graupner was a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach and was the first choice of the Leipzig town council to be Cantor at St Thomas Church , the post that subsequently went to Bach.

Our program, Music from Jeremiah Clarke's "The Island Princess," features eight selections from this dramatic opera or semi-opera. Semi-operas developed in England between 1673 and 1710 and were performed with singing, speaking and dancing roles. When music was written, it was usually for moments in the play immediately following either love scenes or those concerning the supernatural. Jeremiah Clarke (1674-1707) was an English baroque composer and associate of Henry Purcell. Clarke was a pupil of John Blow at St Paulâ€™s Cathedral. In â€œThe Island Princessâ€, a group of European voyagers travel to the Spice Islands and are astounded by the alien culture they encounter. The music, written in 1699, contains the first appearance of what has become known to us as the â€œTrumpet Tuneâ€ of wedding and graduation fame. Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) - Concerto in e-minor for Flute and Recorder

In this episode we’ll hear the winners of the 2009 Ars Antigua-Midwest Young Artists competition, generously sponsored by Walgreens. Amy Pikler, a sophomore at New Trier High School, began playing music at the age of 5 and now studies violin and viola with Desiree Ruhstrat and recorder with Patrick O’Malley at the Music Institute of Chicago. In addition to winning competitions on both the regional and national level, she has appeared as soloist with the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, the North Suburban Symphony, the Symphony of Oak Park and River Forest, the Knox-Galesburg Symphony, and several more across the U.S.Evan Fojtik is 15 and a sophomore at Lake Zurich High School. He began his music studies at age 10, and currently studies flute with Diane Horban and plays in the Midwest Young Artists Symphony Orchestra and chamber music program. Honors include first chair in the District 7 IMEA honors band the past three years, first place in the Junior Division of the Chicago Flute Club student competition, and placement in the senior division. Evan has been featured in the Pilgrim Chamber Players Stars of Tomorrow recital, and also in recital at Ravinia. Like Amy, Evan has received high honors at the Walgreens Concerto Competition on numerous occasions.

For this performance, Evan Fojik and Amy Pickler are joined by David Schrader at the harpsichord for Telemann’s Concerto in e minor for Flute and Recorder.

This program features Baroque compositions by women composers, performed by the Ars Femina ensemble.

These Two canzonas for duo violins, were composed in Regensberg , Germany in 1600. These instrumental pieces were discovered in the bindings of a set of choirbooks used at the Regensberg Cathedral, with the composer only identified as “La Contessa.” Thanks to recent scholarship, the mysterious composer has finally been identified as Maria Paterina.

This program features Baroque compositions by women composers, performed by the Ars Femina ensemble.

Featured on this program are Two Dutch Carols by Anna Ovena Hoijer. Both carols were composed in Rotterdam, the first in 1617, and the second in 1622. Although Hoijer was Dutch, she wrote in German to reach a wider audience. In this performance, the mezzo-soprano soloist Julie Hartwein sings in German, and the chorus is sung in English.

Featured on this program is a Componimento for violin and continuo, composed in Venice in 1622 by Lucrezia Vizana. Vizana entered the convent of St Christine in 1598 at the age of 8, where she was trained in music. Her compositions are characterized by virtuosic ornamentation, as we’ll hear in this performance by violin soloist Katie Whiteside.

Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805) - Boccherini - La Tirana Spagnola

Our program features Luigi Boccherini’s “La Tirana Spagnola”. Boccherini (1743-1805) was an early classical era composer and cellist from Italy, whose music retained a courtly galante style while he matured somewhat apart from the major European musical centers. As a young man, Boccherini was recruited to a post in Madrid where he had great success and spent almost the entirety of his career. This work carries the subtitle, “La Tirana Spagnola” because of the recurring motive at the beginning which imitates a small tambourine evoking the “Tirana” - a Spanish dance performed with a tambourine.

This performance by Ars Antigua features members of the Mirabel period instrument string quartet with Jerry Fuller, double bass.

The violin became the dominant indoor instrument and because the violin is tuned in fifths, it began to share the traditional bagpipe repertoire. The Lament was meant for a 16th century funeral procession, but in typical Scots’ fashion, can’t seem to remain somber for long.

Dietrich Buxtehude (c.1637-1707) - Singet Dem Herrn for soprano with violin obbligato

Our program features “Singet Dem Herrn”, for soprano with violin obbligato by Dietrich Buxtehude (c. 1637-1707). The organist Dietrich Buxtehude is widely considered the most important German composer of the mid Baroque period and “Singet Dem Herrn” is one of his most beautiful works. His style strongly influenced many composers, including Johann Sebastian Bach.

The motet “Singet Dem Herrn” by Dietrich Buxtehude with soprano soloist Tamara Miller-Campbell; William Bauer, violin; and Neal Richardson, harpsichord.

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) - Cassation in G

This program celebrates the life of Franz Joseph Haydn, who passed from this earth 200 years ago this month. Though he never had children, the composer is often referred to as “Papa” Haydn, and his fatherly guidance was essential in the development of the symphony and string quartet. We’ll hear a cassation, a form that was usually part of wedding entertainment. In this Cassation in G, one can hear many of the elements that Haydn would incorporate into his symphonies.

This program celebrates the life of Franz Joseph Haydn, who passed from this earth 200 years ago this month. Though he never had children, the composer is often referred to as “Papa” Haydn, and his fatherly guidance was essential in the development of the symphony and string quartet. From later in Haydn’s life, we’ll then hear a menuetto from an early symphonic masterpiece of Haydn, subtitled “the Night,” or “Le Soir.”

Johann Caspar Ganspeck (1637-1741) - Overture for 2 Violas D'Amore

Our program “The Virtuous viola d’amore” features the Overture in 8 movements for two violas d’amore and harpsichord by Johann Caspar Ganspeck (1637-1741). The viola d’amore shares many features of the viol family - a flat back and intricately carved head at the top of the peg box but, unlike the viols, it is unfretted and played much like a violin, being held horizontally under the chin. It has seven bowed strings and seven resonator strings (which are not played directly but vibrate in sympathy with the notes played). Thanks largely to this sympathetic strings, the viola d’amore ahas a particulary seet and warm sound. Mozart’s father said the instrument sounded “especially charming in the stillness of the evening”.

This performance by Ars Antigua, directed by Jerry Fuller features violists d’amore William Bauer and Rachel Gries.
