Viols in Our Schools Joins the Music Institute of Chicago’s Outreach Programs – In 2008, Dr. Phillip W. Serna will join the faculty of the Music Institute of Chicago, where 'Viols in Our Schools' will be an official outreach program of the Early Music department at MIC. MIC is one of only a few community music schools nationally that offers an early music program. In addition to private study on period instruments, chamber music, small group classes, and large ensemble opportunities are also available. The early music faculty guides students toward an appreciation of period styles, with appropriate bows and instruments. Many early music offerings are intergenerational, making classes an experience the entire family can enjoy together. Viols in Our Schools - Viols in Our Schools, organized by Phillip W. Serna, brings the viola da gamba into Chicago area schools. Primarily consisting of day-long residencies, Viols in Our Schools seeks to both entertain and educate young audiences by exposing them to the rich solo literature from the Renaissance, Baroque, and early Classical periods. The Spirit of Gambo Performing with the Newberry Consort 2008-2009 – During the 2008-2009 season, the Spirit of Gambo will be joining the Newberry consort two unique concert programs featuring Jewish Music in English Courts and a concert celebrating the 450^th anniversary of the beginning of the reign of Elizabeth I. The Elizabethan program will consist of English viol consort music, concluding with the 1912 silent movie classic Queen Elizabeth, to which the Newberry Consort will provide the music. Starring an aging but peppy Sarah Bernhardt, this film is shot mostly from afar, as she poses and flings her arms about and seemingly overacts. But watch Bernhardt's face, strain to hear her absent voice, and you can see what a powerhouse she must have been on stage. She herself claimed to be pleased with the result, crying: "I am immortal! Ernst Stolz studied at the Royal Conservatory in the Netherlands with Michael Barker on recorder, Bob van Asperen on harpsichord, Stanley Hoogland on fortepiano. Additionaly, he studied piano with Sumiko Nagaoka at the Conservatory of Utrecht and choir with Louis Buskens in Rotterdam. An accomplished double bassist, Kazimierz Pyzik (b. 1955, Kraków) studied the viola da gamba at the Meistersinger Konservatorium in Nornberg (H. Groth) and the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussels (W. Kuijken). He divides his concert performances into two clear groups. He plays mainly Baroque and Renaissance music on various types of viola da gamba - from pardessus to violone and, additionally, the lyra viol - appearing in solo recitals as well as with the groups Fiori Musicali and Camerata Cracovia. He also founded his own Consort of Violas da Gamba and is a member of the Viola da Gamba Society of Great Britain. As a composer, he uses, on the one hand, classical forms and tonal order, realized through specially constructed harmonic systems, and, on the other, experimental forms often realized non-musically. He has composed around 100 pieces. He has won composers' competitions in Poland (the A. Malawski Competition and the National Composers' Competition). His works have been performed at concerts organized by Muzyka Centrum, the Olga Szwagier Quartet, and at all the festivals of contemporary music in Poland, as well as others in Germany, France, Jugoslavia and Denmark.

About Contact & Music

Contact & Music is a group of four people, Leonoor (49), Marthe (33), Jeannette (53) and Erik (34), who live together, since november 2006. We all play viol (viola da gamba) and lute. Leonoor, a violinist, first learned herself playing the viol and the lute, and then she taught the other three. We play viol consort and lutequartet. We play the music by heart. We are working together the whole week. It's important for us to search for a social way of living and to cooperate well. We experienced that a good contact is necessary for playing music and is always important in everybody's life. We try to find a way of living by stimulating and helping to develop each other. We try to make a living of Contact and music by playing in nursing homes, residential homes for the elderly, homes for disabled people, in schools and in other places where there is a need for contact and music.
