When not suing the school district for allegedly spying on them via cameras installed in school-issued laptops, Lower Merion High School students are filming themselves getting wasted.

As CBS 3 reported, it’s called “getting shmacked,” yo!

“The video on YouTube is drawings strong reactions from the D.A., school leaders and parents,” reports anchor Chris May. “And adding to their outrage, T-shirts that commemorate the underage drinking and drug use.”

Getting shmacked, they explain, is getting “so high on drugs and alcohol you are no longer able to have any idea what you’re doing.”

Cue highlight reel of students showing off a handle of vodka, taking bong hits and a wasted guy staggering down a staircase.

It’s all part of a documentary coming out this summer.

On Twitter, the bio of “I’m Shmacked” reads: “A movie documenting the experience of a weekend at 20 of the best and biggest universities around the United States intertwined with a book and a website.”

As BostInno elaborated last September, “’I’m Shmacked’ is a documentary currently in the works. The purpose of the project is to visit 12 of the best colleges and universities around the country, and choose one student from each school to follow for at least three days. That experience will be recorded to show how diversity differs at each college and highlight what makes that school so special to its students.”

Click here to view the embedded video.

“There’s a Chiddy Bang concert tonight,” announces the Temple student starring in the clip. “We’re getting fucked up.”

Next, they show a guy puking, then another guy dance-humping an unidentified woman appearing to do “the Jersey Turnpike” a la Deena from Jersey Shore.

The Shmacked meme making the promotional rounds via news outlets is bad timing for Temple University, which is still recovering from both the revelation that it is on a top 20 list of schools for female students joining a thinly disguised escort service and a budget announcement from the Gov. Corbett proposing to slash state funding to the school by 30 percent.

Meanwhile, the Shmacked crew thinks this is all hilarious. On their Facebook page, they posted a screenshot of CBS3’s tweet along with the message:

“Adults who take things completely out of context and run stories on company’s whose names they cannot manage to spell correctly ought to mind the generational gap and stay in between their lines rather than try to exploit and magnify a situation simply to scare parents and raise an audience. Big Brother is watching.”

“You know you’re big when they’re doing news stories on you,” observed a commenter. “Haha, as if adults were never kids. I love that crap.”

And he had one (paraphrased) message: We’re fucked.

Philadelphia City Health Commissioner Donald Schwarz held a press conference this afternoon with regard to Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett’s proposed budget cuts. In no uncertain terms, Schwarz had a message: We’re fucked.

“This budget takes apart many of the supports that have been in place for a very long time for people who are particularly vulnerable in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,” he said, “with impacts that are dramatic for the city of Philadelphia.” As previously reported, Philly will lose $41 million in the proposed budget.

Because of Philadelphia’s place as both a city and country in Pennsylvania (fun fact: We’re one of six city/counties in the entire country) the functions provided to Philadelphia as a municipality and those provided by Philly as a county are both cut.

“When the state cuts its budget, many of the dollars that we’re talking about are dollars that have not been in play with discussions with City Council,” he said, noting the money in play is all determined by the state. What’s happening he said, is the taking apart of a legislative agenda that’s been in place for more than 40 years. The biggest programs that’ll be damaged include services for the mentally ill, young adults moving from, drug and alcohol treatment, services for delinquent children, services for those with HIV/AIDS, food stamp benefits, after school programs, and homeless support for those hoping to move on from life in a shelter. The funds for these services are all controlled by the state. The Administration says the cuts come with new opportunities for more flexible uses of the cash.

But what does that mean, in human terms? “There are folks with HIV who will die on the streets in Philadelphia,” said Schwarz.

The governor has put all these services together in what’s called a Block Grant and cut it by 20 percent. Of the city’s Health and Opportunity funding sources, 51 percent of the funding is made up of state money, 8 percent is local and 40 percent is federal.

Schwarz laid out the cuts based on an all-around 20 percent trim. And those specifics are devastating.

Mental health residential programs in the city, he said, will lose 500-600 beds; about 4,000 uninsured individuals with serious mental health illness will lose their outpatient services; 6-8 community walk-in centers for the mentally ill will be eliminated; 437 beds for those at drug and alcohol addiction centers will be gone; 3,000 people with intellectual disabilities will see a reduction in support; and 575 families per year will lose their DHS housing supports. For starters.

Gov. Corbett said the point of his budget is to “right-size” the public welfare system. He has refused to raise taxes during this Year of the Bible.

Schwarz continued, saying the city will need to cut half its daytime emergency teams and much of its Code Blue staff, which take care of the homeless at night when temperatures are extremely low. With the aforementioned cuts, the city expects an increase in the homeless population and street population with “less capacity to serve them.” The health department called this an “Equation for disaster” — the end result being not just homelessness, but more institutionalized citizens and a larger jail population.

Good Samaritan Philadelphians may soon be required a permit to feed the homeless. Here's look at other cities' feeding requirements.

Earlier this month, Philadelphia City Health Commissioner Don Schwartz said the board of health realized after Occupy Philadelphia had set up camp at City Hall it had “no authority” to ensure the food they passed out was up to safety standards. The board, therefore, has adopted draft regulation that would require free training and a permit to pass out food to Philadelphia’s homeless population. Groups across the city have complained about this rule, believing it’s a backhanded way for the city to move the Ben Franklin Parkway’s population out in time for the opening of the Barnes Foundation Museum.

According to the draft legislation, in order to feed a member of the homeless community outdoors, you’d need to submit your basic information; the place, time, and date of food distribution; and the name of the person on-site. In addition, it requires that no person handling the food touch it with his or her bare hands and be transported at a proper temperature. A hand-washing station would have to be on site, too.

This isn’t the first time Philadelphia has tried to get involved with feeding the homeless—nor is Philadelphia the first city or state to make such demands.

In Houston, Texas, a couple had their “Feed a Friend” operation shut down for lack of a permit in early 2011. Kathy Barton, a spokeswoman for the Health and Human Services Department in that city said at the time a permit was necessary because “poor people are the most vulnerable to foodborne illness and also are the least likely to have access to health care.”

In August 2011, a church group’s homeless feeding operation was shut down in Tampa, Florida. According to this article, that city’s homeless population has been swelling as of late, and complaints from business owners and citizens have led to the requirement of a special use permit for feeding activities on public property.

Churches in Phoenix, Arizona have been ordered to stop feeding the homeless in that city, too, when a judge cited zoning violations. And that was inside a dining hall.

Unlike the Houston operation specifically, Philadelphia’s feeding rule would only apply to three or more people. Philadelphia would become the fifth of the nation’s 250 largest cities to require a permit. Regarding stopping feeding in specific locations, Schwartz has said, “There’s nothing in the regulation to say that, the discussions leading up to this at the Board of Health have not said that, I have not said that…The intent of the regulation isn’t to say you can’t feed at X-location. It’s not that, but no one believes that.”

Former Nevada Senatorial candidate and noted crazy person Sharron Angle has decided to make an endorsement in the Pennsylvania U.S. Senate race. Her pick: David Christian. She notes his commitment to working with Vietnam veterans and getting them jobs. She calls Gov. Tom Corbett’s recent endorsement of Steve Welch “indecent and immoral.” Of everyone, she continues: “They all must be stopped and David Christian is the only person who has the moral fiber and tenacity to put an end to this nonsense.” Christian’s website notes that Obama is just like Jimmy Carter. And that his policies (and rhetoric) are “irresponsible.” Angle is publicly supporting Rick Santorum for president, too.

The numbers are in and they’re ugly. Pennsylvania Gov. Corbett’s budget is costing the city of Philadelphia $42 million, mostly in mental health and addiction treatment funds. Another $21 million is getting cut from the school district, due to the elimination of the “state accountability grant.” Pensions are going up and the city is going to have to cover an additional $14 million of that next year. City Finance Director Rob Dubow told the Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority that the whole thing is “pretty negative.”

In light of that, the mayor and other city officials are holding a press conference this afternoon to discuss the cuts.

Maybe you heard about the draft regulation by the Board of Health that’d require individuals and groups feeding three or more homeless people to get a permit to do so? More organizations are lining up to call the city out on the requirement. Many think it’s a backhanded way to get the homeless population away from the Ben Franklin Parkway, which is a popular food distribution site.

Update: The Chester County woman accused of selling horses for slaughter will avoid jail to join a first offenders’ program.

And speaking of animal slaughter, Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director Todd Rucci said yesterday they’re pulling the ads which feature “the second most famous groundhog in Pennsylvania,” Gus. The PA Lottery will shift their marketing in a “new direction.”

Our old friend Carl Greene, former head of the Philadelphia Housing Authority, is back in the news. He’s still got a defamation lawsuit going against the PHA and its former board members. But he suffered a blow this week when a federal judge said Carolyn Griffith would be able to testify against Greene in the case. Griffith maintains Greene sexually harassed her.

Villanova University has cancelled a weeklong workshop that was to be put on by Tim Miller, a gay performance artist. His stage shows are “often laced with nudity and simulated sex.” That’s why they call it Villa-no-fun.

City Council has a long tradition of not meeting during weeks of federal holidays, just like everyone else! City Council President Darrell Clarke calls this year’s vacation “an oversight in our office” and plans on making adjustments for Council to meet more often. Reportedly included in that adjustment: Meeting over the summer. But don’t hold your breath.

Santorum is showing his colors: Satan is coming, contraception is terrible, Obama is the Godless Hitler...But is that a bad thing?

Far be it from me to use the exact same headline as the Drudge Report. But the text above this blog here is exactly what the influential news aggregator is using to scare his readers today. Likely to influence Republican voters, the headline comes as Santorum is surging in the polls and Mitt Romney is looking underneath every crevice to find his mechanical mojo.

Drudge writes that in 2008, when the former Pennsylvania senator spoke at Ave Maria University in Florida, he noted that Satan—yes, Satan—had the United States of America in his trusty fire gun’s cross hairs. Here is the audio.

“Satan has his sights on the United States of America!” Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum has declared.

“Satan is attacking the great institutions of America, using those great vices of pride, vanity, and sensuality as the root to attack all of the strong plants that has so deeply rooted in the American tradition.”

It goes on to reveal more batshittery, as you might expect. And maybe such batshittery is meant to make Santorum bandwagoneers take a step back. After all, the gaffes he and his people have made on the campaign trail have been getting more and more publicity. And as if it were possible, they’ve been getting weirder, too.

Last week, Santorum Super PAC donor Foster Friess jumped into the Obamacare contraception nontroversy, saying, “You know, back in my days, they used Bayer Aspirin for contraceptives. The gals put it between their knees and it wasn’t that costly.”

Then, this weekend, Santorum said Obama had no God. And was basically Hitler. His press secretary went on Fox News yesterday to clarify her boss’ statements but ended up calling Obama’s tendencies radically Islamic. So then she clarified her own statements, saying she actually meant “radically environmental”—because the environment and Islam are very similar.

"I should have listened to Rick Santorum!"

Drudge’s point here is probably not just to scare those Americans who believe in the return of Satan (those people are probably already in Santorum’s camp), but to bring sad Romney supporters back into the former Massachusetts governor’s sleeping den. The thinking here: Santorum, really? It’s a campaign slogan if we’ve ever heard one.

But as noted in today’s Washington Post, maybe this whole thing is on purpose. “[W]hile members of the press may still be scratching their heads over [Santorum's] remarks,” writes Felicia Somnez at the Post, “what matters more than that is the opinion of those who actually cast ballots on Election Day. If those that have come out to see Santorum in the past few days have reacted to the controversy at all in interviews, it’s been a mostly positive reaction.” Santorum’s crowds are getting bigger as he makes more “gaffes” and every accidental attack on the president’s religion may be meant with a wink.

As this is all going on, Romney’s jumping in. “Sen. Santorum hasn’t been as carefully viewed by the American public as have the others,” he told Politico. Donald Trump will be on Michigan radio over the next week bashing Santorum, too.

We previously wrote about Santorum’s similar warnings of Armageddon concerning healthcare and ancient Greek myths. This old quote might be his most explicit, though.

Regular PW/PN readers know it’s been tough times for NJ Weedman, aka marijuana activist/capitalist Ed Forchion. As we reported in December, the feds raided his Liberty Bell Temple and related growing operation two weeks before Christmas, and last month the Hollywood medicinal pot-shop closed for good. Meanwhile, Forchion’s facing the possibility of significant jail time if he’s convicted of a marijuana possession with intent to distribute charge stemming from a 2010 traffic stop in Mt. Holly, N.J., where cops found a pound of high-grade weed in the trunk of his rental car. His trial was originally slated for last October, but was moved to April 10 at the Burlington County Courthouse.

Forchion, of course, isn’t going down without a fight. Or a spectacle. Along with his pit bull Cheeba, he’s hopping in his righteous airbrushed Weedmobile van for a cross-country, publicity-raising journey from California back to the Jerz (think of it as the stoner version of Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley) to face a jury of his peers and try to wiggle out of his predicament by employing a longshot jury nullification defense. Weedman’s launching his voyage on March 20 (sure, 3/20’s not as ideal as 4/20, but what can you do?), and he’ll be tweeting (@NJWeedman) and hanging with his supporters along the way before rolling into Philly around March 28 to kick it here for a few days, rally his local supporters, maybe speak at the Nullify Now! convention at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on March 31, and probably just generally smoke a shit-ton of weed and party down around Philly in what could possibly be his last weeks of freedom if things go bad at the courthouse in April.

Forchion just posted a video about his upcoming adventure:

Rendell says it'll all be OK...priest abuse trial begins...new bike lanes to connect Philly and Camden...Occupy art...more...

Buzz Bissinger hosted Michael Smerconish’s radio show yesterday and featured Ed Rendell to talk about the potential purchase of the Philadelphia Media Network. Rendell said he doesn’t personally have any money to invest in the company and that if he and others owned the PMN, the newsroom would be a “firewall” between reporters and people like himself who could potentially get involved in the editorial decisions from the top.

The Philadelphia priest abuse trial begins today with jury selection. It will be the first time a priest (Lynn) is on trial not for sexual abuse, but neglecting to report known pedophile priests to the authorities. Most priests accused of rape and torture don’t go to trial. The Catholic Church has paid out more than $2 billion in settlements over the years.

That $6.8 million bicycle lane project that’ll connect Camden and Philly in a way other than our murder rates is set to begin in April. The project is being funded through a federal Transportation Investments Generating Economic Recovery grant.

Horrible: A fetus was found in a Kensington sewer pipe yesterday. Two plumbers were working on a house near Russell Street near G when they found the unborn fetus, which is estimated to be between 14 and 16 weeks old.

Councilman Bobby Henon wants to relax trash rules for senior citizens, allowing them to put out the garbage earlier than everyone else. “It gets dark out early. It’s a safety issue for them, just walking down the steps. They don’t want to be out, they want to run their errands early in the day, and be home by dark,” he said. His proposal, which would ease the requirement from 7 p.m. to 2 p.m. for those 65 and older, is going to committee.

Don’t look now, but here comes House Bill 1754, which would make those who quit their jobs ineligible for unemployment benefits. Exceptions are made for victims of domestic violence who work with and fear their abuser. House Bill 1852 would eliminate the statute of limitations for unemployment fraud. So, unemployment fraud, but not violent sexual abuse? Seems reasonable.

Republican voters’ second pick for vice president is Rick Santorum. (Maybe because he’s the first pick for president?) First for vice president is Florida Senator Marco Rubio, who’s famous for saying Obama killed America…with an axe…to the face.

The Friends Center is exhibiting Occupy Philly-inspired artwork.

Rick Santorum has officially made it to the Majors: He's being attacked by the Democratic National Committee.

It wasn’t long ago the Democratic National Committee and Obama Campaign were sending out daily emails attacking Mitt Romney’s attacks on them, in between the former Massachusetts governor’s ‘America the Beautiful’ serenades at lowly campaign rallies. But things have changed.

New polls show former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum leading all Republican candidates (Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul) both nationally and in Michigan, the site of the next Republican primary. And with that in mind, the Obama Campaign has switched gears. They’ve headed out on the web, seeking to destroy Santorum and everything for which he stands. An email was sent out by the DNC Rapid Response Team today, calling Santorum’s economic philosophy, in the subject heading, the same as the one “That Created the Economic Crisis, But Even Worse for Middle Class Families.”

Among the smears thrown at Santorum include the idea that his plan would benefit the wealthy, “while adding $900 billion to the deficit”; his opposition to the payroll tax cut; his plan to squash Medicare; and this idea that he would not have saved the auto industry back in 2009. Pennsylvania leaders even held a press conference on Friday touting economic and manufacturing gains in Pennsylvania, due to the president’s efforts.

The DNC email goes on to quote the Tax Policy Center, Newsmax, CNN, the Wall Street Journal, the LA Times and others to show just how terrible Rick Santorum is.

This comes on the heels of Santorum viciously attacking the president yesterday on Face The Nation, saying Obama’s not religious and is just like Hitler (sorta), then taking back the Hitler comparison. In campaign emails, he’s been referring to Romney and Obama as in the same camp: both liberals, both hellbent on destroying the former Pennsylvania senator.

Thing is, Santorum’s most recent comments aren’t that much different from what he’s been saying the entire campaign. And for most of the campaign, the president and DNC have been ignoring him. No more. Unlike everyone else, his surge looks to be for real, and probably because he (unlike everyone else) is for real. The numbers show that.

The context says something else: His surge has come at exactly the right time. When conservatives believe they can actually do something about the old wedge issue/enemy: abortion and contraception. They’ve managed to pass a series of radical, invasive legislation that allows the government to creep a little farther into your bedroom. States across the country (including Pennsylvania) have introduced (and in some cases, passed) women’s health clinic regulations and forced ultrasound legislation. In Virginia, the latter has prompted a silent protest, today, in front of that state’s Capitol building. (The Virginia bill goes further than the Pennsylvania bill and would require women seeking abortions to be penetrated with a vaginal ultrasound probe; similar legislation has been blocked in Texas by a judge.)

Part of the national health law requiring nonprofits to cover contraception medicine for women was met with disdain by a coordinated Catholic Church attack within the last month. Santorum immediately jumped on board. Romney tried to, but failed miserably (he stayed silent on a similar Mass. law while governor there).

It got to the point where the president released a compromise, which Catholic officials rejected. And the pundits have followed suit. Rush Limbaugh has voiced concern that requiring contraception would lead to the government telling its citizens they can only have “two babies.” He also said HHS could tell sick individuals to wear their underwear on the outside.

Glenn Beck traveled to Rome last week in light of the controversy, discussed it with officials in the Vatican and came home with the phrase, “We are all Catholics now,” and got space to publish that in the Washington Post. Beck says the contraception fight is going to lead to an International Tea Party Movement and Religious Freedom Coalition.

Now ask yourself: who will an International Tea Party Movement and Religious Freedom Coalition benefit in the Republican primary? Looks like the DNC is ready.

Here's a list of Philly's candidates in April and November 2012. And no, it's not just Barack Obama, Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney.

A full list of Pennsylvania candidates for the 2012 elections was put online Friday. That includes everybody hoping to compete in any election—primaries and generals. Here’s what it means for you:

Statewide, we’ll be voting for presidential candidate (and all primaries) on April 24. That’ll happen whether or not any (or all but one) of the Republicans decide to drop out of the presidential race. On the Republican side, as you probably know, it’s Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul and Mitt Romney. They’ve all signed up to at least be on the ballot. The Democrats have one: Barack Obama. Unless the challenge against Obama’s eligibility filed by some Birthers on Friday goes anywhere.

On the U.S. Senate ballot, the Republicans have Sam Rohrer, Steven Welch, Marc Scaringi, Tom Smith and David Christian. Philadelphia native Robert Allen Mansfield dropped out of that race to run in the Second District Congressional race. On the Democratic side, Bob Casey shouldn’t have a tough time against newcomer Joe Vodvarka, a small business owner and manufacturer of springs and wire forms in Allegheny County. Check out his “Why I’m running” video here.

For Attorney General, it’s former Congressman Patrick Murphy up against Lackawanna lawyer Kathleen Kane on the Democratic ticket. The Republicans have one candidate, David Freed.

Moving on. Your U.S. Congressman is one of two people: Bob Brady or Chaka Fattah [or Allyson Schwartz]. All are being challenged this year, though only Brady and Schwartz are facing a primary. Brady’s going up against Jimmie Moore in the primary, who made headlines when he called for the National Guard to come into Philadelphia and clean up the crime problem. Schwartz is up against ‘Occupy candidate’ and Democrat Nathan Kleinman. Then, in the general, our old friend John Featherman will be on the Republican ticket facing the First District Democrat. Featherman previously ran for mayor in 2011 as a Republican and lost the primary to Karen Brown. [This paragraph has been corrected.]

Second District incumbent Chaka Fattah does not have a primary challenger, but will face Iraq War vet Robert Allen Mansfield, a Republican from North Philadelphia. We previously profiled him here.

In the state General Assembly, you’re likely represented in the Senate by either Larry Farnese, Shirley Kitchen, Mike Stack or Vincent Hughes. Kitchen and Hughes are set for an uncontested victory in November. Farnese will face Democrat John Morley in the primary. Morley has run for the seat previously, including in 2000 when the building contractor filed a lawsuit saying a Center City lawyer tried to force him off the ballot against then-State Sen. Vince Fumo. On the GOP side, lawyer and Iraq War vet Alfonso Gambone (of the firm Capone and Gambone) will be on the ballot in November.

Mike Stack is facing Michael Tomlinson from the Republican side. That’s not the singer, but besides that, we’re still figuring out who this guy is.

In the many races for state Reps. in Philly, in our bloated branch of state government that is the House, one race sticks out: The 169th District. Formerly represented by Councilman Dennis O’Brien, redistricting sent the seat to York County, for a second. But that map was thrown out and now, unsure of the 169th’s future, there are candidates from both Philadelphia and York in the mix, even though the cities are more than 100 miles away from each other. Two Republicans from Philadelphia (David Kralle, John McCann) and one Democrat (Edward Nielson) are running for the seat. The rest of the candidates (Leroy Wentz, Allan Case, Marc Woerner) are Republicans from York.

In the 170th, which holds parts of Northeast Philadelphia, Democrat Brendan Boyle is being challenged by Republican George Weiss. Kevin Boyle, who represents the 172nd, is being challenged by Daniel Collins in the primary, and Philadelphia Republican dinosaur Al Taubenberger in the general election (Taubenberger previously ran for mayor against Michael Nutter in 2007 and for City Council at-Large in 2011). He almost won the latter.

Michael McGeehan, Michael O’Brien, Thomas Curtis, William Keller and John Sabatina are all running unopposed. In the 177th, Republican John Taylor is running against Democrat William Dunbar in the general. Tony Payton is facing Clay James in the Democratic primary. Angel Cruz will go up against Jonathan Ramos in the 180th. Rep. Babette Josephs is facing two Democrats in the primary: Brian Sims and Paul Hagins. In the 185th, Maria Donatucci will face Democrats Norma McNeil and Freeda Mabry in the primary; Jordan Harris is facing a huge list of candidates in the 186th primary: Harold James, Tim Hannah, Damon Roberts, Edward Nesmith and Fawwaz Beyha.

The rest of the races are as follows: Ernes Adkins, James Roebuck, Darryl Egler and Muhammad Fatimah are running for the 188th District. Vanessa Brown, Lemuel Thornton, Audrey Blackwell-Watson and Wanda Logan (all Democrats) are running for the 190th. Casey Ford and Ronald Waters are running for the 191st. Louise Bishop and Will Mega are facing off in the primary for the 192nd. Linda Bateman, Pamela Delissio and Ray Bailey are running in the 195th. Seth Grove and Dan Bradley in the 196th. In the 197th, which is Sheriff Jewell Williams’ old seat, Steve Crum, Kenneth Walker, James Johnson, Jose Miranda, Gary Williams, Milton Street (*yes) and Jewel Williams (*yes) are all running in the primary. Malik Boyd, Rosita Youngblood and Charisma Presley are running in the 198th. Michael Ellis, Stephen Kinsey and Karl Gamble are running in the 201st. Mark Cohen and Numa St Louis are facing off in the 202nd. And, finally, it’s Sabriya Bilal, Dwight Evans and Thomas Lamont in the Democratic primary for the 203rd District. Stay tuned for further coverage of state Rep. and Senate races. And why you should vote in them.

Pennsylvania General Assembly backing off PLCB "privatization" language...Rick Santorum has a wacky weekend...Philadelphia Media Network drama...more...

Just as everyone suspected, the state General Assembly is slowly backing off any attempts to privatize the state’s alcohol system in favor of what they’re all calling “modernization.” Which essentially means, “doing our job…better.” Sort of like the (fingers crossed) City Council bill that’d force the Philadelphia Parking Authority to do the same.

We previously reported the trouble surrounding the almost irreconcilable differences regarding privatization between Republicans, Democrats, other Republicans, union officials and others here and here.

You know what might be cool? Obliterating I-95. OK, not necessarily “cool,” in the practical sense, but definitely cool in the “hey, development/green space!” sense. City Hall isn’t talking about it, but Next American City is.

Former Senator Rick Santorum, now considered by some to be the favorite for the Republican nomination, was all over Sunday politics talk yesterday. He went on Face The Nation to criticize the Affordable Health Act, specifically the issue of the day: Abortion. And specifically under that umbrella, prenatal screenings. (Does this thing keep getting weirder, or what?) He argues that prenatal tests encourage abortions. Which is bad, even though it’s a right upheld by the Supreme Court. “The bottom line is that a lot of prenatal tests are done to identify deformities in utero and the customary procedure is to encourage abortions,” Santorum told host Bob Schieffer. In this article by Tom Fitzgerald, the following line was written to explain Santorum’s comment: “He said he was referring specifically to amniocentesis, in which fluid from the amniotic sac is drawn to test chromosomes for birth defects.” What?

However, the real big news from the exchange yesterday was how Santorum later questioned President Barack Obama’s religious faith, which of course he did. As we’re all aware, the president has grown up in the last four years. Back then, he was a young, avowed radical secret Muslim, who bowed to the east several times a day. In secret. Now he hates all religions. The only thing that remains the same is that he thinks American Christianity is rednecky.

And who can forget the Philadelphia Media Network debacle? Three-hundred newsroom employees of the Daily News, Inquirer and Philly.com have signed a public statement calling on “current and any future owners of the media company” to not be douchebags, i.e. protect the integrity of their reporting, which many contend has been compromised as of late, and could be compromised more based on who buys the papers.

One of those potential bidders, Ed Rendell, told The Naked Philadelphian, “I don’t think that we will be buying” the papers. Hours later, he told the Inquirer he didn’t mean what he said, and he may still be in negotiations.

Grrr. Someone’s slashing tires in Mayfair. Neighbors be not amused.

There was a “fiery” crash on Lincoln Drive Saturday night. One person was killed.
