Young Professionals' Picnic and Potluck

Join us for a fun-filled day of potluck dishes, games and networking in Gantry State Park on Saturday, September 12, 2015 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Participate in the super fun Cucumber Game- the person who can move a tennis ball placed on the ground farthest using a cucumber dangling from waist wins!

You can also jump and race around at our exciting Sack Race.

Kids can have fun too! We'll have face painting and there's a playground and water sprinklers for them to enjoy.

ABOUT STREET OF DREAMS PROJECT

The STREET OF DREAMS Project was started in 2011 by Miguel Braganza who believes that art heals, can express who we are and who we want to be through training, creation and performance. The project is designed to nurture each child’s self-esteem and to foster self-discipline, arts appreciation, creative thinking, trust and teamwork through the world of performing arts. Through the STREET OF DREAMS Project, Miguel has helped children become better citizens of the world --- Alaminos, Pangasinan 800 children (3 days workshop); Isabela Province (500 participants); University of San Agustin (15 dance company members); Lipa City, Batangas (39 participants); Women’s Dorm, Camp Karingal (prisoners); University of the Philippines Theater Dept (40 participants); Lola Grande Foundation in Sta. Ana (50 participants); Julie Borromeo Performing Arts Foundation in Mandaluyong (30 scholars); Davao City with ICB Performing Arts Foundation (more than 100 students).

Philippine-New York Jaycees Sweep Major Awards

Cortland, New York (February 2, 2014) – JCI Philippine-New York, which celebrated its golden anniversary last year, received a total of 24 awards at the Junior Chamber International (JCI) New York State Third Session and Year-End Convention. It was the most number of awards given to a local JCI New York State chapter. For six consecutive years now, the chapter has won the highly coveted Most Outstanding Local Chapter of the Year award. Additionally, it has received the Most Outstanding Local Chapter President of the Year award for seven consecutive years.

The convention was held in Cortland, New York on January 31-February 2, 2014. The convention included an assortment of training sessions, meetings, networking activities, induction of new state officers, and state recognition of outstanding local chapters, members and officers.

In 2013, JCI Philippine-New York successfully completed a total of 70 exciting projects through its five leadership areas (Management, Community Development, Membership, International Affairs and Individual Development) to further the mission of JCI in creating positive change. Some of its key achievements in 2013 include a proclamation from the Mayor of New York City of a JCI Philippine-New York Day on September 28, 2013; awarding two Honorary Memberships; commitment to advancing the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals through its multiple sustainability and fundraising projects; supporting the US Jaycees Foundation through its Oklahoma Disaster Fund; feature in JCTV Episode 6 and; proactively conducting a Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda fundraiser through its Hope for PH project.

2013 Chapter President Bel Molina adds, “Our success in 2013 is chiefly due to the commitment and passion of our alumni, advisers, officers and members. We have certainly showcased our theme of 50 Years Onward: A Tradition of Excellence!”

Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda has made history as the strongest storm to make landfall and has caused catastrophic devastation. Many of those who survived the storm have nothing left and are in despair. Extraordinary times like these calls for extraordinary acts of kindness. Let us take action to show what our hearts are made of and provide the survivors with a sense of hope and a reason to smile again.

Please join us in solidarity with the victims of the typhoon in the Philippines on Saturday, December 7 at Toshi’s Penthouse with musical performances by Filharmonic Band and John Violago, fashion show by Darius Gibbs and auction items donated by our generous benefactors.

Jaycees Showcase Pinoy Pride

New York, New York (October 4, 2013) – As part of its 50th Anniversary series of celebrations, the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Philippine-New York (Jaycees), in collaboration with Pinoy Pride Sa America, Inc., held the first-ever Pinoy Pride Sa America concert, fashion show and photo exhibit event on Friday, October 4, 2013 at LaBoom Club in Woodside, New York. The show was headlined by the phenomenal Aegis Band from the Philippines.

Rena Avendula, CEO and co-founder of Pinoy Pride Sa America, Inc., remarked that the organization aims to “unite Filipinos in America through events that support Filipino artistry.” Its maiden event also endeavored to support Gawad Kalinga (a Philippine-based poverty alleviation and nation-building movement) and a supplemental feeding program in Lanao del Norte in Mindanao.

The Jaycees produced the fashion show segment, featuring the creations of Filipino fashion designers Darius B. Gibbs and Anna Puruganan. Darius superbly kicked off the fashion show with stunning lines from DARK by DARIUS B. GIBBS and LIGHT by DARIUS B. GIBBS, contemporary designs for young men and women, respectively. Afterwards, models in dramatic cat-eye make-up stepped out in vibrant, eclectic black-and-white outfits brilliantly designed by Anna.

Yonkers, New York (October 19, 2013) – The Junior Chamber International (JCI) New York State Second Trimester Convention was held in Yonkers, New York on October 18-19, 2013. The convention was packed with leadership and professional trainings, fun camaraderie with Jaycees from across the state, and state recognition to local chapters for an outstanding second trimester of 2013.

Now on its 50th year, JCI Philippine-New York received a total of 11 awards- the most number of awards given to a local JCI New York State chapter: Outstanding Executive Vice President Zultan Bermudez; Outstanding Individual Development (ID) Vice President Loren San Diego; Outstanding Community Development (CD) Vice President Mel Rodriguez; Outstanding International Affairs (IA) Vice President Stevenson Van Derodar; Outstanding Membership Services (MS) Vice President Ria Serrano; Outstanding State Vice President Brandon Schumacher; Outstanding ID Project "5K Fun Run + Yoga"; Outstanding MS Project "Flashmob at the Santacruzan"; Outstanding Management Project "Lifetimers' Dinner"; Outstanding Public Relations Project "Letters to Oklahoma" and; Outstanding Website "www.philnyjaycees.org."

Improving Leadership Skills through Education

As members of a professional organization like the Jaycees, we tend to cultivate different skills
through our social interactions with each other and in the workplace. However, is there a certain point we reach that we can no longer just count on these interactions to improve our skills? While we one never stops improving, one of the most effective ways to improve leadership skills is through education.

What is your leadership style? The best way to start improving your leadership skills is to understand the best way for you to lead. There are many quizzes out there that can help evaluate your dominant skills and determine how they help or hinder your leadership abilities. (Educate yourself here to find out the areas in which you need assistance.)

Learn more about communication. We don’t doubt that most Jaycee members are able to effectively communicate with one another, but how do you fare on providing one-on-one communication? Are you able to take nonverbal cues from peers/coworkers/team members that could influence your effectiveness as a leader? Philippine-New York Jaycees to Celebrate its 50th Anniversary Gala

New York, New York (September 12, 2013) – Junior Chamber International (JCI) Philippine-New York (Jaycees) will hold its 50th Anniversary Gala on September 28, 2013, 7pm, at Elite Palace in New York. To commemorate this special occasion, the New York City Office of the Mayor has informed the chapter that Mayor Michael Bloomberg will be proclaiming September 28 as “JCI Philippine-New York Day.”

JCI Philippine-New York is an affiliate of the Junior Chamber International whose mission is to provide development opportunities that empower young people aged 18-40 to create positive change. It has the distinct honor of being the longest-standing ethnic-based chapter of the JCI United States which continues to undertake pioneering projects beneficial to its members and the community. To date, the chapter is the only organization for young people in the New York Filipino-American community devoted to leadership training of its members and the community via balanced programs in the areas of business, individual development, community development, membership services and international affairs.

This year’s gala is a celebration singularly dedicated to more than 5,000 members who have joined the chapter through the years. These members contributed to the chapter’s rich history and continued on to become community leaders, successful businessmen, government officials, accountants, teachers, lawyers, doctors and many other professions. The event is spearheaded by overall chairman of the event, Richard Rillera, the 27th Chapter President as well as Bel Molina, the 50th and current Chapter President. Honorary Chairs include the Honorable Consul General Mario Lopez de Leon, Jr. of the Philippine Consulate General in New York and the global community leader Ms. Loida Nicolas-Lewis.

On July 20, 1963, the Philippine-New York Jaycees held its Charter Presentation and Induction at the International House Auditorium in Columbia University. At this presentation, young Filipino men officially accepted the challenge of "Leadership Training Through Community Service" - the basic principle of the Jaycee movement and its raison d'etre - with Ernesto Pilares as founding president. These young men sought to serve the civic and social needs of the then-fledgeling Filipino-American community in New York. They founded the first Filipino Jaycee chapter outside a foreign land and eventually opened the door to the formation of other chapters outside the Philippines. Since then, the chapter has had many accomplishments benefitting its members, the community and the world.

Letters to OK on Display at the Moore Public Library

Once more, JCI Philippine-New York is creating positive change!

The Moore Public Library has our letters on display for the public to view so that more of those affected by the Oklahoma tornado may be uplifted.

Back in June, the chapter conducted a month-long letter campaign and fundraiser, “Letters to Oklahoma- Raising Sentiments,” in response to the deadly tornado that tore through Moore, Oklahoma in the afternoon of May 20, 2013.

Overcome the Challenges of Fundraising with Crowdsourcing

Over the last few weeks, we have showcased the Jaycees primary public policy platform – the U.N.’s Millennial Development Goals. Chapters all over the country host thousands of events that raise awareness and help the United Nations come closer to completing their objectives. Unfortunately, the biggest struggle for any organization’s cause is coming up with the funds to help support their event. A great solution for these funding dilemmas is to turn to the digital fundraising tool known as crowdsourcing.

What exactly iscrowdsourcing? It’s a little different from the traditional fundraising route in that the organization is trying to obtain contributions – money, items, ideas, etc. – from an undefined public. Fundraising efforts are primarily successful when working from a mailing list or another specifically— named group. Crowdsourcing can help you identify an audience to increase awareness, inspire people to volunteer, collect more information and roll right through the day of your event —all for a minimal investment.

Exploring the UN Millennium Development Goals: Part Two

Did you know that the Jayceeshas officially been a partner with the United Nations since 1954? So it’s no wonder that our organization decided in 2003 to make the U.N.’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) the official public policy platform we support. In the past decade, the Jaycees has helped advance these time-bound goals that target poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination against women. How exactly have we been doing our part to help the United Nations achieve their goals?

Every year, members of The United States Junior Chamber of Commerce organize thousands of projects that help raise awareness of the U.N.’s MDGs. At our annual Leadership Summit, we join representatives from the United Nations to brainstorm workable solutions for our members to bring back and implement at their local chapters. Here are a few of the Jaycee events that local chapters have created to help the U.N. reach their 2015 goals:

Nothing but Nets – US Jaycees, in partnership with the U.N. Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign ,has kicked-off a multicity “BzzzTour” to encourage elected officials, chapters and communities throughout the country to continue the fight against malaria globally.
One Thing That’s Green – JCI Philippine-New York participated in an Earth Day event earlier this year, supporting the sustainability goal of the U.N.’s MDGs. This is the fourth year that they have participated.
Can’t Stop the Serenity – The Mid-County Jaycees in St. Louis, Mo. are hosting the Can’t Stop the Serenity event in September. This affair promotes and protects the human rights of women around the world – another MDG. By encouraging gender equality, this chapter is doing their part to empower women.

Exploring the U.N. Millennium Development Goals: Part One

The United States Jaycees has adopted the U.N. Millennium Development Goals as our public policy platform. The Millennium Development Goals – or MDGs – are eight ambitious goals set by the United Nations to address some of the most pressing needs here in the United States and also around the world. The US Junior Chamber is doing our part to help the U.N. achieve the following goals:

Ending poverty and hunger
Universal education
Gender equality
Child health
Maternal health
Combat HIV/AIDS and other diseases
Environmental sustainability
Global partnership

Why exactly did the Jaycees choose to support the U.N.’s MDGs? The Jaycee Creed aligns specifically with what the United Nations is trying to accomplish worldwide, specifically, “…that Service to Humanity is the Best Work of Life!” We are happy and proud to be a part of the most successful global anti-poverty push in history.

With two more years to achieve the lofty goals set, there is still work to be done.While many Millennium Development Goals have or will be met by the 2015 deadline, progress in many areas is still short. Jaycees Whip Up Pinoy Food with Chef Romy

New York, New York (July 14, 2013) – As part of its golden anniversary series of events, the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Philippine-New York, also known as the Jaycees, invited New Yorkers for a fun and educational "Filipino Cooking Experience and Sorbetes-Making Class" with the renowned chef, Romy Dorotan of Purple Yam.

The Bicolano Chef Romy, along with his wife Amy Besa, is the restauranteur behind New York Times-reviewed Cendrillon and Purple Yam. They are also the authors of the IACP (International Association of Culinary Professionals) award-winning book "Memories of Philippine Kitchens." The New York Times describes the book as "the most comprehensive book in English on (this) country's rich and complex food culture."

Spearheaded by the Jaycees’ Individual Development Vice President, Loren San Diego, Chef Romy taught the class how to cook an appetizer (Ukoy), an entree (Adobo) and a dessert (Sorbetes).

Ukoy is the Filipino version of shrimp fritters. Small shrimps are mixed in a batter, placed on a banana leaf and deep-fried until crispy. Adobo is often called the "National" food of the Philippines. Chef Romy's chicken adobo is braised in vinegar, soy sauce, coconut milk and a variety of spices until pungent and rich. The chicken is then deep-fried and served with the sauce that is boiled on high heat until thick. This sumptuous chicken adobo has been featured in the Martha Stewart Show, New York Times and NY1 Chow. Sorbetes is the traditional variation of ice cream made in the Philippines. The flavor of the ice cream that the class made was sinigwelas- one of the summer fruits in the Philippines.

At the end of the class, Philippine-New York Jaycees' president Bel Molina thanked Chef Romy for sharing his culinary expertise and for his invaluable contribution to the promotion of Filipino food.

You might feel down but the situation can better itself if we just help each other...I want to lend my hand to you and my prayers...,” writes Vanessa Teodoro in one of the letters sent to the Oklahoma tornado victims via the letter campaign and fundraiser organized by Junior Chamber International (JCI) Philippine-New York (Jaycees), “Letters to Oklahoma- Raising Sentiments.”

This project was held in response to the deadly tornado that tore through Moore, Oklahoma in the afternoon of May 20, 2013. This led to 21 counties in a state of emergency; at least 23 people were killed while 377 were injured.

In response to this, the Jaycees appealed to its members, friends and community to write letters to show empathy and to uplift the spirits of those affected. As a result, 50 letters were collected and sent via the Jaycees’ Oklahoma City chapter. The month-long campaign culminated with a fundraiser and musical soiree in Payag Restaurant on June 29, 2013. The event proved successful with about 70 attendees and over $1000 in ticket sales and donations. Enjoyable new wave and 90s music was provided by The Tricycle Band, composed of three friends: Elmer Dytioco (guitar/voice), Zoilo Tampadong (drums) and Rodney Pascual (bass).

Letters to Oklahoma- Raising Sentiments

Dear Active Citizens,

"Today is the day to care for those who have lost their homes, livelihoods and family."

As you may know, a deadly tornado tore through the Oklahoma City suburbs on the afternoon of May 20, 2013. Oklahoma currently has 21 counties in a state of emergency due to a violent tornado that struck the state, killing 23 people (and an additional person indirectly), and injuring 377 others.

In response to this, JCI Philippine-New York (Jaycees) appeals to its members, friends and community through a letter campaign 'Letters to Oklahoma-Raising Sentiments.' It hopes to show empathy by writing letters to residents of the devastated areas in Oklahoma City and raise funds to support the call of the US National Jaycees Organization in helping those in need and alleviate the devastating impact of these tornadoes to their communities.

As New Yorkers, calamity devastation and recovery are not new to us. We have been terribly hit by Hurricane Sandy last year and we hope to share these sentiments of brotherhood by giving the Oklahoma victims hope through our letters and financial assistance.
