Personal portfolio site created for artist Kimberly Adams. The site was designed to be understated in order to emphasize the textures, colors, and design elements of her work.

The structure of the site is built on a simple HTML/CSS frame and integrates a very basic jQuery image gallery and simple PHP contact form. The site is currently live at kimberly-adams.com

A long-term marketing project developed for Checkers Drive-In Restaurants during my time as a graphic designer with the in-house marketing department. 

When I joined the team, the company was developing a new product: chicken wings. Traditionally a hamburger QSR, Checkers wanted to expand their line of authentic, indulgent ‘big flavor’ items and found bone-in wings to be a very viable outlet. For the initial push, the company originally planned to have a ‘Classic Wings Tour’ travel through a number of locations, cooking and handing out fresh, free Classic Wings.

We began by brainstorming broad marketing concepts as a team, then developed design concepts for the vehicle and mobile kitchen wrap (click here or the image above to see more kitchen wrap sketches). I focused on the ‘five kickin’ flavors’ and an idea initially put forward by my co-designer — a perversion of Chic-fil-A’s ‘Eat More Chicken’ campaign. One of the main concepts that developed from this process was the Anonymous Chicken, Checkers Classic Wings’ mascot. I had the opportunity to and develop and illustrate the character from scratch, and I was also able to write much of the copy that went along with the Classic Wings marketing, especially when the Anonymous Chicken was involved.

Since his creation, the Anonymous Chicken has been utilized consistently from 2008 – 2012 on shirts, packaging, vehicle graphics and marketing at Tropicana Field. In 2009, the Anonymous Chicken Posse was introduced, expanding possible usage for the mascot.

A website for a Bay-area not-for-profit built for WordPress. The West Tampa Center for the Arts is one of the more active gallery spaces in Tampa. Located in one of the many historic cigar factories, the WTCA houses rental studios and hosts a wide variety of exhibitions — including many of the semi-annual BFA exhibitions by students graduating from USF.

The organization was lacking a cohesive identity, so my goal was to borrow elements from the old (the brick pattern) and combine it with a cleaner interpretation of cigar packaging. The website was also lacking structure and consistency.

The WTCA wanted something that could be kept up-to-date easily, and so the site was built around the ease-of-use afforded by WordPress and Picasa for managing content and photography, respectively. The site is currently live.

An edutainment video about Constructivism and De Stijl from Eskilson’s Graphic Design: A New History, produced for ARH 4724: History of Graphic Design. Because art history can be challenging and/or boring, students were asked to split up into groups and then produce an entertaining — yet educational — video based on a movement/style/section of the course. This film was created by Joseph Nuñez, Travis Staton, Taylor Katcher and Dwight Morrison.

ARH 4724: History of Graphic Design – Revolutions in Design edutainment video

Program website re-designed and coded for the introductory web-design course, ART 4634: Visual Design for the Internet. Students worked in groups to re-design (or design from scratch) a website for a local business or organization. This group wanted to tackle some of the accessibility/usability issues from which they felt the current USFSP program site suffered.

The students jumped at the opportunity to not only fine-tune their web design abilities, but to also continue exploring the development of an engaging and active voice for the program’s web presence. This site was designed by Stephanie Morrison, Sharon Steel and Milton Rosado.

Posters for fake films, created for GRA 3735: Intro to Multimedia Systems. These film posters are a continuation of the assignment outlined in the Visual Research Collages: at the beginning of the semester, students were asked to find a hand-held object that evokes an action and (hopefully) some sort of personal response. Over the course of the semester, we have explored a range of methods for creating iconic and expressive visual representations of the chosen objects.

As part of their final challenge, students were asked to write a synopsis for a made-up film which would feature their chosen object. They then had to develop a poster which conveyed the themes/concepts of the film, somehow integrating a representation of their object somewhere within the composition while including necessary content including billing, the film’s title, the release date and stars.

An identity system designed for the University of South Florida’s graphic design program during ART 4925: Media Workshop: Production.

Students were given the task of re-branding the design program, focusing on branding as more than just a logo and set of rules. Each student drafted mission/value statements, defined program goals and audiences, and developed a voice for the program. Required elements included an identity manual, program catalog, business card, poster, takeaway and a informational handout that was limited to being photocopied. This identity system was designed by Caitlin Burns.

A portfolio website designed and coded for the introductory web-design course, ART 4634: Visual Design for the Internet. Students were asked to split into pairs, then create hand-coded portfolio websites for their partners. This forced the students to not only demonstrate web design/coding knowledge, but also the ability to craft solutions based on their client’s personal style and voice. A series of illustrations for the performance piece Complete with Illustrated Manual by Ellen Mueller. The performance centered on Valerie Hartman, an individual who had developed — and was in the process of marketing — her own time travelling device, The System. I was commissioned to do a series of faux-ISOTYPES/infographics used to enhance the many rules and words of caution associated with time travelling.

Although the illustrations were visually based on typical warning signs and obscure, IKEA instruction manuals, the goal of the imagery was to be absurd, entertaining and, in many cases, ambiguous.

My love of clean, technical illustration leant itself nicely to the overall concept, and each illustration posed engaging challenges in readability vs. legibility and technical execution.

A personal website for Christopher Zenner, an actor/singer/songwriter based in New York.

Mr. Zenner wanted a website that could be easily updated with content, and — being an artist himself — he also had a very good idea as to how the site should look. I worked closely with him to develop the visual elements of the site (color scheme, layout, imagery, etc.) then translated his vision into a custom WordPress theme.

Working with WordPress allows for content to be easily managed by individuals without knowledge of HTML / CSS. Plug-ins were added to include audio, a contact form and Picasa integration. All content — photographs, audio and text — were supplied by Mr. Zenner for this project, and response has been overwhelmingly positive.
