Rev. Michael Spotts will lead our evening service, continuing on in a series on the book of Ecclesiastes. An offering will be taken for Zuni Christian Mission School. Join us at 5:30 PM.

Please be advised that on January 15, 2017, Missouri Ave. from 7^th St. to 24th St. and 20th and 24th Streets up to Missouri Ave. will be closed for the annual PF Chang’s Rock N Roll marathon. This will greatly affect your church commute!

Alternate directions: Take SR 51 North, and exit EAST on Glendale Rd. Glendale Rd will become Lincoln Drive; proceed EAST to 24th St. Go SOUTH on 24th St. to Montebello (it is a small street just south of Bethany Home Rd). Go WEST on Montebello and proceed to 20th Street. Go SOUTH on 20th Street, until you reach PURC.

It's with great joy that we have the opportunity to witness the ordination of Michael Spotts to the gospel ministry this Sunday, January 8, 2017. After many years of study and demonstrating the requisite gifts needed for pastoral ministry, Michael will be formally set apart for his calling through the laying on of hands (I Timothy 4:12-14). A special welcome goes out to Daniel Hyde, pastor of Oceanside URC, who mentored Michael and steered him in the direction of the pastoral ministry. Daniel will be preaching for us this morning and participating in the ordination service. May the Lord bless this special occasion to our lives and God's glory. Soli Deo Gloria! Beginning next week, we will be considering a four month preaching series on select portions of the book of Acts. The morning preaching series will highlight significant moments in the history of the church's expansion. It will also provide the basis for our adult education classes this winter and spring (January-April). The adult class will be led by our new associate pastor Michael Spotts and will provide ample opportunity to dig deeper into the book of Acts as well as provide time for group discussion. Advent is the traditional name for the Christmas season, when Christians ponder the mystery and miracle of incarnation—God the Son assumed human nature to redeem and befriend sinners from every walk of life. Throughout December, you are warmly welcomed to join us as we examine Biblical stories related to the first Christmas and offer gifts of worship to our King. Join us Christmas Day, as we have back-to-back worship services at 9:30 am and 11:15 am, with a time of fellowship in-between. There will be no evening worship service.

Ladies Night Out-Thursday, August 18th, from 6:30-8:30 at the Fired Pie (3110 N. Central Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85012). All ladies post-high school and up are invited to this casual evening of food, fellowship & fun!

Women's Brunch--Saturday, August 27th, from 9am-noon. Event location TBD. We are hoping to serve & benefit the Hope Women's Center of Greater Phoenix. Stay tuned for more details!

Ladies Bible Study--Our Ladies’ Bible Study will be continuing its study this year where we left off last year: in John Piper's 2011 edition of Desiring God: Meditations of a Christian Hedonist. This group regularly meets on the 2nd & 4th Wednesdays of each month, with our first meeting on September 14, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the Council Room.

Ladies Game Night--Did someone say 'BINGO'? Join us for a fun night as we enjoy each others company over a few rounds of Bingo! Thursday, September 15th from 6:30-8:30 pm. Please bring an appetizer or dessert to share!

Join us this evening for our Good Friday Service, beginning at 6:30 PM, as we continue looking at the individuals shown grace by Jesus near the time of his crucifixion, death and resurrection. Michael Spotts will be preaching on a text from John 19 "Faith Formed by Loss". We will be celebrating the Lord's Supper, and an offering will be collected for the PURC Benevolence Fund.

Celebrate Easter with us Sunday, March 27th, with worship services at 9:30 AM and 5:30 PM. Pastor Grotenhuis will be preaching on texts out of Matthew and Job.

A Look at this Sunday's Worship....

Pastor Grotenhuis will continue in a series of sermons looking at the texts relating to the events surrounding the crucifixion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Such events give us an insight into those who opposed Jesus (religious leaders, Jewish onlookers, Roman soldiers, Pilate, Herod and others). But we also receive a glimpse of those who were drawn to Jesus in His final hours. Our series will focus on these individuals and our own call to draw near to Jesus - our Redeemer and King of the nations.

Tonight, intern Michael Spotts will be preaching on a text from John 19. Jesus' provision for his mother, Mary, is a deep expression of his love for all believers, informing our identity as "beloved disciples.” This text also offers a model and motivation for you to extend the love of Christ's family to others.

We invite you to join us Friday, March 25th at 6:30 PM for a special Good Friday Service.

"Are scientists interested in simply following the evidence wherever it may lead? Or are many of them committed to interpreting the evidence according to their prior philosophical commitments? Has Science buried God?"

Phoenix United Reformed Church will be showing a livestream video of the ASU Veritas Forum (www.veritas.org) on Thursday, February 25, from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m, at Phoenix United Reformed Church, 2002 E. Missouri, Phoenix, AZ 85016.

Oxford Professor John Lennox will speak on the topic, "Has Science Buried God? This was the topic of his famous debate in Oxford with Richard Dawkins in 2008 (see www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxD-HPMpTto and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0UIbd0eLxw), his 2009 book, God's Undertaker: Has Science Buried God?, and in lectures at major universities around the world since then, more recently at Rice University (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSq4KLjMSlI). The talk is intended for a general audience. In addition to the talk, Professor Lennox will answer questions that are texted in from audience members at both the live event site and the remote video viewing sites.

Adult Sunday School Series

Same Sex Marriage Forum

On the front burner of America's culture war is the issue of same sex marriage. The matter is currently being deliberated by the US Supreme Court, and if mandated would have vast implications for marriage, family, and churches. On Saturday morning, May 23, attorney Bill Bowman will speak at PURC on a Christian view of marriage followed by an open forum addressing various moral and legal questions relating to same sex marriage. Forum participants: attorneys Bill Bowman and Jeff Shafer and Rod Tussing. This Saturday’s gathering will begin with a congregation-wide breakfast in the fellowship hall at 9:00 am and the speech/forum will begin in the sanctuary at 9:45 am and end at 11:30 am. Mike has planted a number of churches in Honduras as well as helped organize a hospital, seminary, and Christian school. He us also currently taking a number of courses at Reformed Theological Seminary (MS). Let's give Mike and Erin a warm send off.

Sara Horn is a writer, author, and speaker who is also the founder of “Wives of Faith”, a military wives ministry. Her first book, A Greater Freedom: Stories of Faith from Operation Iraqi Freedom was written with Oliver North and received a nomination for a Gold Medallion, the highest honor given in Christian publishing. Since then, she has focused on subjects very close to her heart as a military spouse, wife and mom, including the book GOD Strong and the Bible study, Tour of Duty. Her purpose as a communicator is to encourage women to seek God in every aspect of their lives.

Sara’s most popular book to date, My So-Called Life as a Proverbs 31 Wife was a personal narrative which chronicled her one year experiment to see if it was possible to live out the principles found in the Proverbs 31 passage. In her sequel, My So-CalledLife as a Submissive Wife, Sara addresses the question, “What does Biblical submission look like for wives today?” Her most recent book, How Can I Possibly Forgive: Rescuing Your Heart from Resentment and Regret was released in October of 2014. Sara has been married to the love of her life, Cliff, a Navy reservist for over 16 years, and they have one son, Caleb, who is in eighth grade this year.

Special Welcome to Rehoboth Choir

Sunday morning Feb 22, we offer a special welcome to the Rehoboth Christian School choir from Rehoboth, NM. The choir, under the leadership of director Bob Ippel, will begin our worship with an opening song and offer a brief 15-20 minute concert immediately following our morning worship. Due to the post-worship concert, there will be no Sunday School classes today. Classes will resume next week.

Youth Group Christmas Drive

The PURC Youth Group is collecting the following items for the homeless: 1. socks, hair brush, soap, shampoo; 2. Hygiene items: toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant etc.; 3. Used backpacks are always great gifts too. There are boxes in the narthex where you can place your donations. The donations will be distributed by the youth to the homeless on Dec 20, at our feed the homeless project with New City Church and Dave Bennett. Each donation will have a note & bible verse in it that is hand written by the youth. May this project open our eyes to the needy and give us the opportunity to share the love of Christ.

As is our custom, we will be having our Good Friday worship service Friday April 18 at 7 pm. Bear in mind that we will also be celebrating the Lord's Supper. As we commemorate and celebrate Jesus' finished work on the cross for us, may our hearts be filled with sincere gratitude for our Savior's love for us. A few days later (next Sunday) we will celebrate Easter and the resurrection of our Lord Jesus from the dead. This provides a wonderful opportunity to invite people to worship, especially those who have had little to no exposure to the Christian faith. Have you been thinking about someone/praying for them? Next Sunday would be a good opportunity to invite them to hear the gospel of the resurrection.

Over the next number of months Pastor Grotenhuis will be preaching through a detailed, time-tested, and well-respected Christian statement of faith called the Belgic Confession (BC). The BC was written by Guido DeBres, a Protestant Christian (1522-1567) who paid for his convictions with his life. Our prayer at Phoenix United is that our series on the BC will not only inform our minds but engage our hearts in the hope that we may "be able to give an account of the hope that is within us to anyone who asks" (I Peter 3:15).

Our fall children/adult education season gets underway Sunday,
September 15. We read in 2 Peter 3:18 that we are to "grow in the
grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." To that end
we are offering classes for children K-12 as well as adults. This year
4-10 year olds will be learning from material provided by Great
Commission Publications (affiliated with the OPC/PCA). 11-14 year olds
will be learning from material (history and doctrine) provided by our
own federation (URC). Those aged 15-17 will be studying the
fundamentals of the Reformed faith from the time-tested Heidelberg
Catechism.

This year we are also offering an adult class on the theme of work
based on a recent book by Dr. Tim Keller called "Every Good Endeavor."
A three month morning sermon series on work will precede the class as
a way of providing grist for discussion. The class is designed to be
both instructional and interactive. All adults welcomed and encouraged
to participate in a class that is timely and relevant.

However, PURC has never formally explored the idea until relatively recently. Given this fact, the elders would like to host an informal congregational meeting May 19, after our morning worship. The purpose of the meeting is simply to begin a discussion about church planting and whether there is the desire among PURC members to do so in the near or distant future. This week all PURC members should receive a brief email attachment that will provide the framework for an informal discussion. Non-members are welcomed and encouraged to observe.

Rooted is collecting donations for the New City Phoenix BBQ for the Homeless that will be held on March 30, in South Phoenix. Many of us will be volunteering for this BBQ- serving food, handing out Bibles, praying with the men and women, and sharing the love of Christ with them. After the Thanksgiving holiday, we will begin a morning sermon series on the personal and cosmic benefits of Christ's birth. Jesus the Messiah has come not only to save us from our sins and reconcile us to God (Matthew 1:21), but He has come in order to restore a fallen world (Colossians 1:19,20). In our evening worship (leading up to Christmas) we will consider the book of Ruth – a woman graciously chosen by God to be in the line of the Messiah (Matthew 1:5). As we begin the new year together, we will begin a three-month morning worship series on select articles of one of our confessional standards: the Canons of Dort. The Canons of Dort cover such important teachings as total depravity, definite atonement, unconditional election, invincible grace, and the preservation of the saints. Soli Deo Gloria.

Sunday School and Catechism classes begin today, Sept 16. The bell will ring and classes will start at 11:00 a.m and end promptly at 11:45 a.m. Pre-K to 1^st grade will meet for singing in their classroom and are to be picked up by their parents at the end of class. All other classes will be dismissed on their own. (See the insert for your child’s class location.) The Tussings’ Reformed Theology class will be in the sanctuary and Tom Riley’s Parenting class will be in the fellowship hall. Adults are also welcome to attend the High School Catechism class taught by Rev. Grotenhuis and Paul Hamstra. There is nursery available during this time for parents that wish to attend a class.

This fall we have an exciting and long awaited opportunity to equip and enrich the lives of boys and young men of our congregation. Boys/young men need the discipleship of their fathers and other Christian men. Through the Calvinist Cadet Program the fathers/men in our congregation will have the distinct privilege to build up these “future men.” The goal of the cadet ministry is to help boys grow in four main areas: Devotional, Mental, Physical and Social. These goals will be achieved through Bible Study lessons, Christian service projects, outdoor activities and working on merit badges. There is no better use of time than to invest in the future of the church. Right now we are making preparations to begin our first Cadets Club. We strongly encourage all boys to be involved, and need to know quickly their names and ages so we can organize our club to begin this fall. As pastor Grotenhuis mentioned this past Lord's day, his father Dale Grotenhuis is failing rapidly. He was admitted to hospice where the nurses have estimated that he has only a few days left on this earth. Phil and Joy are flying out tomorrow morning to Michigan to be with him. Please pray that the Lord will allow Pastor and Joy to be with Dale in what appear to be his last moments in this life. Pray for Pastor to be an encouragement to the rest of the family and that God's grace will be made very clear while they are together. An Update on Nicol Phillips

Nicol is at home resting in her own bed.

Late Thursday afternoon, the laparoscopic surgery went well. The Surgeon removed the gallbladder which he found to be very inflamed and Nicol was out of surgery in about 1 hour. We finally went home from the hospital Friday afternoon. Last night Nicol had her first decent night of sleep while trying to manage the pain and discomfort. Today she has been walking a little and eating a little. The surgeon expects recovery to be fairly quick because the surgery is much less invasive than in years past.

We know that the Lord was with her at all times and that He is the one who has gifted and called those in the medical field that surrounded her with their talents. Please continue to remember Nicol in your prayers as she manages the pain and that she would be able to rest thoroughly tonight and of course for a speedy recovery.

Prayer for Nicol Phillips

Family in Christ,

Nicol Phillips is in Banner Boswell Hospital but doing fine after having a severe gallbladder attack Tuesday evening. The Hospital did some tests and found that it has started to get infected so they have her on antibiotics and are scheduling her for surgery to clear stones from the bile duct and remove the gallbladder, most likely Thursday. Today she is waiting for the results of an MRI.

Please pray for the surgery to go well and also for the recovery to be quick and her strength to be restored. We are very thankful to God for his mercy that there was no rupture which can be very dangerous.

I did hear back tonight that Nicol did have the MRI and thankfully no stones were found in the bile duct. She is feeling well tonight and is expecting the surgery tomorrow afternoon. Please remember Nicol in your prayers.

A Word from the Pastor

Hi everyone,

Although it was not stated in the bulletin, it was announced Sunday that Dr Carl Bogue will be leading us in worship for the next two Sundays (July 22 and 29). I, Joy, and the kids will be on vacation to Washington state. On a personal note: Dr Bogue has often graciously agreed to fill our pulpit when it has been difficult to find pulpit supply due to scheduling conflicts and certain times of the year (like the summer months). If you could offer him some thanks and encouragement, that would be much appreciated. He has been good to us and I trust that he feels we have been encouraging to him.

SNACS Night

Due to the wonderful hustle and bustle of the past week we had decided not to have SNACS

the first Sunday in July. But now that things have settled down, we have decided to have SNACS on July 8. ....not next Sunday, but the Sunday after that.

Just to let you know....no SNACS next week, but I will put the usual SNACS announcement in the next bulletin so everyone will be aware that we are having SNACS on JULY 8.

Also, does it seem like you bring Main Dish every other month? The way the current breakdown is, each family brings a main dish six times each year, salad/vegetable 3 times per year and dessert 3 times per year. So if it seems like you bring Main Dish every other month, we all do!
