The Bears Softball Team took on the Scottie Dogs of Highland yesterday in their second game of the NJCAA National Tournament. In the first inning the Bears jumped out to a one run lead as Rebecca Wyatt bunted for a hit and stole second base to later score off Sierra Rodriguez's hard hit single. Highland CC came back in the next inning to tie it up after a runner tagged from third base on a sac fly. The following inning Wyatt got on base again and scored off of a double by Cassie Roessing to take a 2-1 lead in the third inning.

The Bears started off day three of the NJCAA National Tournament with a game against #3 seeded Kirkwood Community College. Rebecca Wyatt started off the game for the Bears with a double and she later scored off of a single by Lani Redmond. The next inning Kirkwood would get that run back as the runner on third tagged up to score their first run. The game remained tied 1-1 until the top of the sixth inning. Jamie Morgan and Lani Redmond both were on base in the sixth inning when Sierra Rodriguez hit a single to drive in Morgan.

PC Softball took on the #1 seeded Lousiana State University- Eunice in the semi-finals of the NJCAA National Tournament. Both teams were undefeated in the tournament until meeting each other in this round. LSU-E jumped out to an early 1-0 lead and built on that throughout the game as they compiled six total runs. In the sixth inning with Sierra Rodriguez on second base, Michelle Pluguez hit a double to drive in the Bears first run of the game. Despite, the Bears best efforts they would be unable to overcome the lead built by their opposition; falling 6-1.

The #2 nationally ranked Phoenix College Softball Team opened up NJCAA National Tournament Play against the Barons from Burlington County College out of New Jersey. The Barons were able to put the first run on the board taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. However, it did not take long for the Bears to strike back. In the bottom of the third inning Tori Gil singled and was moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Paige Hamelin. Then, Jamie Morgan hit a triple to bring around the Bear's first run of the game. Phoenix College students Valerie Ramirez and Jennifer Fish have been awarded scholarships by the Phoenix branch of the American Association of University Women. The recipients were selected for an award of $750 each based on achieving at least a 3.5 GPA, being a full-time degree student at Phoenix College and showing financial need.

“It is very encouraging for me to receive this award,” said Ramirez. “My kids said, ‘Mom, you can get the laptop you’ve needed.’ They are proud of me.”

If it seems like déjà vu when Serina Espinoza, 17, walks on stage to accept her high school diploma, it is because a week before, she was in her cap and gown accepting the Phoenix College associates degree she earned. Earning her college degree before high school graduation was made possible through hard work and the programs at the Phoenix College Preparatory Academy and the Achieve College Education or ACE.

The #2 nationally ranked softball team will take on #15 nationally ranked Burlington County College out of New Jersey in their first game Wednesday, May 15 at 1:30pm (Bear Time). The games are going to be broadcast live from Clinton, Mississippi (audio for opening rounds and video for the semi-finals and finals). If the Bears win their first game they move on to play the winner of #7 Highland Community College and #10 Sauk Valley Community College Thursday, May 16 at 1:30pm (Bear Time).

Head Softball Coach of the defending National Championship Bears, Heinz Mueller, is going to be inducted into the Arizona Softball Hall of Fame. Mueller has accomplished an incredible amount in his softball coaching career and looks to further that success this year as the Bears compete in the 2013 NJCAA National Tournament.

Over 400 graduates will participate in the 91st annual Phoenix College Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 10, 2013. Family, friends and community members are welcome to attend the ceremony, which will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the Phoenix College Hoy Stadium on the campus at 1202 W. Thomas Rd. Overall, more than 1524 graduates will earn a certificate, associate's degree or transfer degree in the 2012-2013 academic year.
