I've not dabbled in photoshop for so long. The first one here, I just wanted to create something a bit more extreme with colours and tones, make it colder, bleak and gritty. I quite like it and at least I think it will be good fodder for a painting sometime. The next two I was fiddling with the lens correction filter and found a setting that automatically fills the background from the edges of the actual image. So much fun.
So here are a few iPhone snaps.

As I mentioned in my last post, the light was fantastic that day, and the Tate has these amazing windows.

This sculpture was fantastic and I loved the way it was lit too. The shadow behind just made it perfect.

In hindsight, I'm glad I didn't take my DSLR around the galleries as I would just have shot it in black and white. The iPhone is an awful camera by comparison but I wouldn't have got these photos otherwise. And there's much more spontaneity (for the window shots). Certainly some inspiration for some paintings.

∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗
© phojus / Justin Lane 2007-2012 all rights reserved ∗ RSS ∗ Buy my book! :)
∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗

<georss:box>53.40030573286431 -2.9956306865539553 53.40148873286431 -2.993162686553955</georss:box>

Liverpool - some architecture

I had a nice day trip to Liverpool with a couple of friends from Flickr a couple of weeks ago. It was one of those winter days where the light was just perfect. It was good to get the photographic juices flowing again.

Blogger seems to have improved a bit recently and you can now click any photo to bring up the large version in a slide show type-thing.

We are busy preparing for the upcoming Art Bazaar (26th November). It's going to be a good one with themed shop areas. Yesterday was screen printing day. And I love screen printing although I'm still new to it really. Session was led by Jo.

EDIT 28JAN12. Sorry I have broken some links here. You can see the images in my scrapbook (link below) until I fix them.

We need to create some good value Arc merchandise and graphics that could be used to sell or decorate (signage at) the Art Bazaar. I was interested in the Indian embroidery we have at Arc, and wanted to come up with a couple of designs based on it.

The peacock and the elephant were my favourites. And I drew out some basic designs and tried to simplify for the purposes of screen printing. It's interesting to try and create designs where both positive and negative prints can be made.

Here is the final design for the peacock, it was drawn out onto manilla paper and then cut out. This is a photocopy.

I started off with the positive prints.

Yellow on blue looked fantastic, I quite like the bubbles though they are not supposed to be there.

Some of the sections became misaligned. But created interesting designs all the same.

And here are some of the negative prints.

Straight off, I started experimenting with adding detail colours to the tail and wing before loading the screen with really surprising results. I assumed it wouldn't work but I'm really happy with some of them.

So that's it. A really productive day of experimentation and productivity, it was great.

I love injecting a little colour back into my black and white shots. This time, I've taken it to an extreme I thought I would never reach. I've held back posting these for days, revisiting them thinking I would pull them back towards reality. But each time I've thought they needed more.

I'm almost scared to say it, but I love them. I so enjoyed taking these shots, it was unplanned and very dark. But I managed to find a few perches for my camera to avoid camera shake, or I just ramped up the ISO and prayed for steady hands. And the post processing too: I've recently switched back to Photoshop so these have all been through ACR (but not full Photoshop) and I've really got to know the module again, and enjoyed the split tone function very much.

Anyway, I hadn't planned on creating two sets. I made the blue-green / mauve set first and was happy. But I remembered the weird orange glow from the phosphorescent lighting down there and thought I could produce something with a twist on how it actually looked. So I've also done a crimson red / yellow set. I think I prefer the red set.

So here they are:
My first piece of digital art proper. I'm quite pleased with it too. It's based on a pretty famous photo of Jack and Meg and I've tried to use their trademark red, white and black colours as much as I could. I intend to do at least one other version with different colours (Jack's red eyes and their blue skin will probably get changed first). And maybe also mix things up a bit; a friend made some awesome Warhol-esque pop art out of his.

Using Illustrator at Arc has been a bit of a learning curve and I found it completely alien in comparison to all the photo editing software I've used previously. But Annette Naor — one of the tutors — made it seem achievable and lots of fun. So I'm really glad I'm doing the course, I originally baulked at the idea of doing digital art.
I had a lot of fun with this: great lighting but also very low light. Oddly, my favourite is a self-portrait, it just seems to work.
I'm really happy that I managed to grab quite a few shots with my camera during a trip to Victoria Baths in Manchester a couple of days ago. It's been opened up quite a bit more since my last visit. The front of the building is open now and the Turkish baths are amazing. I could have spent loads more time there.

I'm quite happy with some of these.

Jacqui often arranges for artist tutors to come in and help us in some way or another. At the moment, Christine helps us on a Wednesday morning to develop our portfolios.

She started off in the new year ago by asking us to think of some kind of project. I was at a loss. But one morning, as I was loading the kids into the car a plane dropped out of the clouds on its way to the airport. It was still mostly dark, windy, damp and moody. The cloud swirled around and enveloped the plane as it descended; it's red and white lights illuminating the way. I imagined a big metal flying monster or dragon breathing red flames over the Stockport sky.

At that moment I really wished I had my camera handy, but I couldn't even take my phone out of my pocket to snap it. Anyway, I later decided to use that mental image and fantasy for the project.

I already had the desire to further explore abstraction. And different ways of introducing texture into painting with acrylics. So this is what I did in the following session.

Dragon Exploration 1
12 Jan 2011

This is my first exploration of the subject. I wanted to try and capture the feel of the scene, colours and movement. It's multiple layers of acrylic paint applied whilst still wet or tacky. I love using acrylics in this way and like to scoop everything from the palette if I can.

This was also my first painting for months. Wow, it felt really good.

∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗
© phojus / Justin Lane 2007-2012 all rights reserved ∗ RSS ∗ Buy my book! :)
∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗

Justin's got a bit of admin

I don't like including posts like this on my site but here goes anyway. Hopefully it will be the last.

I have recently redesigned and rebuilt this website chronicles of phojus on the Blogger platform. It used to be on Wordpress, and Blogger again before that. This must be the eighth or ninth revamp and although I'm very happy with the layout and function, there is very little content: this is because it's currently hidden away, ready to be tweaked and republished. (This is also the case with my Flickr stream too, by the way).

Anyway, the reason I mention this is that if you are currently subscribed to my RSS feed, you will probably see old posts popping up and masquerading as new content. At the moment I'm not sure how to prevent this although I have a couple of ideas. Hopefully I'll get it fixed soon and apologies for spamming your RSS reader in the meantime.

I have another site called about Justin Lane which I'm using as an online CV of sorts and also to publish News Items: short posts about when and where I'm exhibiting and other stuff that's happening in my world and probably snippets of admin info too. This is to keep chronicles free of unneeded content.

Products. Not advertising.
I've always made the decision that I won't display adverts on this website. But I have recently been looking at ways of earning a few pennies from what I do. The recent exhibition has given me the confidence to try and sell my work. So, the book being the first, I will be gradually developing a line of products such as framed prints, posters and a couple of quite interesting items too that I'm quite excited about. These products will be displayed on the site and in the feed too. As you might know, I'm not working at the moment so if you feel like helping me out in any way with this, it will be much appreciated.

That's it I think. If there's anything else, I'll be posting it on about Justin Lane instead.
When the recent Creative Spaces exhibition (still running) was announced I knew I wanted to get some kind of portfolio together as well as displaying framed photographs. So I decided to create a photo book of my best work, some of my Flickr contacts had done so before and it's something I'd always intended to get done sometime. After a bit of faffing around, I decided to use DS Colour Labs in Didsbury, Manchester; they have a great reputation and although the photo book product they offer is apparently fairly new, I felt confident that they would deliver. And they did!

The Colour of Suffolk is a soft cover 8" x 8" book printed on professional photographic paper. It has 26 sturdy pages and each double page lies completely flat. This allows me to include very large — up to 16" x 8" photographs which look fantastic - they are same quality as a professional print. I have included 18 photographs on the 26 pages and there is no text.

I decided to use photographs from Suffolk as these best represent where I am at with my photography right now, I also believe they are my best work. They are mostly black and white images, many of which I have toned to try and represent a feel of the scene. This is the style of photography I have developed over the last few years since I decided to switch to black and white. See my Suffolk, January 2009 gallery to get an idea of which photographs I've used.

The book has gone down very well at the exhibition and everyone has been very impressed with the quality of the book itself as well as being complimentary of my photography so I'm really proud of the finished result.

I'm offering 10 copies of the book for sale as a limited edition. These will include an extra 2 pages of additional content and will be signed and numbered. I will deliver before Christmas 2010 (in the UK). Price £35. <s>At the time of writing I have 8 copies left.</s>

This is part of the Creative Spaces exhibition which is featuring some excellent work by some very talented artists.

8 artists' installations - from felt to photography. cupcakes to canvas, framed art to wallpaper - all in one gallery space!

Each of the artists are to be given their own space, to transform into their own unique and inspiring solo exhibits, to allow you a glimpse into the world as they see it or escape from reality into other worlds of their own their imagination.
The exhibition opens this Thursday 14th October and continues through 'til 12th November 2010. Please come and visit sometime during the month to see the wonderful work we have on display in the gallery. The Arc gallery is located in Reddish, Stockport, UK. (Map below).
He knows his name starts with a “curly C”. He can find words that contain that letter too. Lately he has started making letter-like squiggles on paper to make pretend he’s writing.

Just the other day, he was busy writing his latest masterpiece, all haphazard amongst scribblings and shapes until he got bored and went to play with some toys. I picked up the paper he had been drawing on and idly ran my eyes over the shapes and letters.

Suddenly in the middle of the chaos, that four letter word popped right out at me: LOVE, quite clearly written, perhaps by accident. But I like to think he was leaving me a little message.

-----

I was randomly given the theme of “love” to write about creatively in a group I meet. So this is what I wrote. Soppy, I know but I think I got off lightly. The theme I chose for someone else to do was “bacon”.

∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗
© phojus / Justin Lane 2007-2012 all rights reserved ∗ RSS ∗ Buy my book! :)
∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗

Scavenger Hunt

Just as I was wondering how to spark a bit of photo creativity, I clicked through to one of Nicole's blog posts about a little project I can take part in.
UPDATE 9 March - Have managed to get a few of these done and have ticked √ them off the list above

UPDATE 15 March 00:47 - only a few hours left. I think I've done what I can now, maybe I'll get a couple more. I do have one or two that I could use, but I'm not happy with them. So I'll probably use archival shots for the rest.

I'm not saying this is a good photograph, but it's an important one for me.

For about eight or nine months now, I have been shooting black and white almost exclusively. I've spent a long time getting to know how my camera works best in capturing a black and white image; how to process the files but more importantly how to think black and white whilst out shooting. I've certainly missed a few potentially amazing colour shots and trained myself to ask "how would it look in mono?". So it's been a lesson in ignoring these situations.

One thing to understand as I say this is I do still capture that colour information in-camera; I set my Nikon D200 to black and white mode as well as RAW+JPEG output. This means I get a black and white JPEG image and a RAW file containing all the original colour information from the time of capture. This gives me greater flexibility when processing the file to tweak tonal values to exactly how I like them; also, there is a lack of control in the D200 as to how the JPEG will be processed in-camera, for example I can't tell it to dial down (or up) the contrast. I still like to have a black and white JPEG as it gives a pretty good idea what I was looking for at the time of shooting; a good reference when processing files later.

So for this shot, as with all others, I had seen the colour version briefly before processing the raw file into the mono end result. And I have to say I was very taken with it as a colour photo. To cut a long story a little shorter, I couldn't get the mono photo to look as I wanted: warm highlights and cooler shadows; something along the lines of split toning. Which cannot be done in Apple Aperture software (as far as I can tell). So I switched back to the colour version which gave me exactly as I wanted.

So even though this was shot as a black and white photo, I have used the colour version. As a stand alone image, this may look a bit obvious, but it does kind of fit in with all the toned mono images I have produced as part of this set. I have to say I found myself in a bit of a dilemma over this because I have set myself quite strict guidelines. I really want to master the black and white image digitally, but here I am with a colour photo. This may not bother most people but for me it's something to worry over.

exhibition. All of these photos are from a short trip I took down to Suffolk, a trip on which I very nearly didn't take my camera. I'm so glad I did, some of these photographs are easily my best work and I'm proud of them.

Justin, 28 October 2010

∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗
© phojus / Justin Lane 2007-2012 all rights reserved ∗ RSS ∗ Buy my book! :)
∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗

Auto ISO on the D200

The Writing part of this website is sadly lacking at the moment. Although I do have a few imported articles, posts and assignments that are currently awaiting a dash of tidying up before they are released into the wild. I have some ideas I'd like to share on the subject of photography and rather than put them on the other blog (not this site, I don't really see it as a blog) I'll post it here.

Yesterday I took my D200 out into the forest local to my parents' house in Suffolk. It was cold and a heavy fog had settled the night before. My walk took me along windy paths through dense woodland; wide forest tracks with open sky above and across open, cleared land too. So the available light was pretty much changing for each new shot.

Most if the time, I use Aperture Priority mode on the D200. The reasons for this is it provides the most creative opportunities whilst hand-holding the camera. I am restricted to fast shutter speeds to reduce camera shake so my only other variable is ISO. In good light, such as a bright or sunny day this isn't much of an issue. Shutter speeds are fast, I can set ISO to 100 or 200 and use any aperture setting I like. But much of my shooting is in poor light or indoors. Or so it seems at this time of the year. So my creative choices are sometimes limited unless I choose a higher ISO.

Anyway, whilst I was out yesterday, all this ISO switching got me thinking about the Auto ISO function on my camera. I'd previously dismissed it as a pretty pointless idea, I'm not sure why. But it occurred to me yesterday that in my situation, it might save me a bit of bother. The D200 gives two options to fiddle with; the first being minimum shutter speed; the second being maximum ISO. I set the former to 1/100 second as I was shooting at 28mm at the time (I like to triple the focal length when using a minimum shutter speed to be safe) and the latter to ISO 800. Later on I changed this to 400. Noise on the D200 is well controlled, anything up to ISO 400 is as noiseless as I need in most situations. And I don't worry too much about it anyway when it does appear especially when shooting black and white. But even so, I prefer it wasn't there if possible.

The resulting behaviour of my camera was pretty interesting. Where the light was good enough, the ISO remained at 100 for my chosen aperture. In lower light levels, the ISO would creep up whilst keeping the shutter speed at 1/100 and my chosen aperture. For some shots, I saw it creeping up towards 800 and increased my aperture a little to bring it down again. After a while, I realised what I was doing and decided to reduce my maximum ISO to 400 instead.

So, a simple equation. I get the lowest ISO possible at a good shutter speed. I've not had to think about adjusting anything but aperture, which is what I want. So far, this is working well.

But after a few more shots, I get out into a more open area and find that I want to go to the shortest focal length on that lens: 17mm. And now, the minimum shutter speed is too fast. I can very safely reduce it to 1/60 second. But I have to go back to the camera menu to do this. What a pain. I found that I was going into the menu quite often to make this change; adjusting the minimum shutter speed up and down depending on focal length. So I realise now it's best for prime lenses or if you're just shooting at mainly one focal length or I suppose I could have just set it to something suitable for the entire zoom range of that lens.

During my walk, light conditions deteriorated and some subjects were in quite deep gloom. I found the camera was maxing out on ISO, even though I was shooting at fastest aperture f2.8. So how did Auto ISO behave? Well, it finally did allow a compromise on shutter speed: this crept down to slower speeds unsuitable for hand-holding. In which cases a tripod would have come into play. But for me, I just leaned the camera into a handy tree trunk and carried on. It's good to know that it still let me get the shots.

Will I use auto ISO again? Probably. But only in similar circumstances. If I find myself needing to change ISO too much, then I'll certainly turn it on. But it's a shame that this function couldn't have been developed further for this camera: I'm sure Nikon could couple minimum shutter speed to some inverse multiple of the focal length. Maybe this has already been done in newer models. I have no idea.

And what about a minimum aperture opening setting for those that want to shoot on Shutter Speed Priority? Or what if I want to decide aperture and shutter speed and let the camera adjust ISO to get the right exposure?

In fact, thinking about it I should probably see what happens when the camera is set to Shutter Speed Priority mode when using Auto ISO.

Photos to follow.

∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗
© phojus / Justin Lane 2007-2012 all rights reserved ∗ RSS ∗ Buy my book! :)
∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗

October Meets

40 people, Exchange Square, Manchester. 7th October 2007.

And here's a few I took on the day

Highlights of the day include my first sighting of a real live iPhone. Wow. Pure geek porn. Apple is going to rule the world with it.

A UK Flickr meet in Manchester. Such a good day. I had an excellent time. There was a scavenger hunt followed by results and merriment in a bar later on. And as far as photography goes, the evening was brilliant. We spent a good few hours in the basement of Cord, a bar in the Northern Quarter. I experimented with double exposures and rear curtain flash. I got some interesting results. It was the perfect venue for it with lovely lighting.

Here are some of my own favourites.
I had a nice little wander round the park today. I was getting in the zone. But the results are nothing much. I quite like this one though. It's quiet, still and green. Exactly how I found it. This little pool seems to have become slightly overgrown since I last saw it a few weeks ago.

Abney Hall Park, Saturday 22nd September 2007.

I have also been in a quandry recently about the whole raw vs jpeg thing. So I have been hedging my bets on the odd occasion and shooting both. Today, I'm so glad I did. The jpeg was virtually unusable: it was way green green green. The Auto White-Balance was way off on the D200, I suppose because of the green cover and dull conditions. Anyway, Lightroom auto white-balance was off too on the jpeg and tweaking it manually didn't seem to help (although I'm not great at this sort of thing anyway). So I pulled up the raw file and set the auto white-balance and as above, perfect colours. After that, just a few tonal tweaks.

So, I've proved to myself that raw is sometimes necessary. The camera doesn't always get it right. I wish it did.

∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗
© phojus / Justin Lane 2007-2012 all rights reserved ∗ RSS ∗ Buy my book! :)
∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗

Flickr Manchester

Just had a great morning meeting "Internet People".

I've been thinking about joining a camera club for quite some time now. But have always been a bit discouraged by doing it. Variously because you have to pay (not much sometimes, but still), I have a perception that they can be elitist, they focus on criticism and because meeting strangers scares the hell out of me.

Well, I got over that last point and met up with some Flickr Manchester members. It was good to spend time with people who have similar interests to me, ie Photography. I rarely get the chance to speak to fellow photogs so I had a great time. It was my first Flickr Meet and I'm glad I did it. Next week, I'm off to Gorton Monastery.

A post from Mike Johnston on The Online Photographer really got me thinking about where I'm going with photography. I mean, I love it and all that, no doubt there. But where's it heading? Since I started my The Art of Photography course two years ago, the idea of working towards a BA honours degree has grown on me. At first I thought maybe it would be nice to gain some sort of qualification whilst I'm studying anyway (it's not compulsory with my college by the way). Then I had vague notions of becoming a pro further down the line. But what does pro mean to me? I'm still finding my feet, developing a style and learning loads And just as importantly, I'm still discovering what floats my boat photographically. I'm quite sure Portraiture or Wedding Photography isn't for me and maybe not studio work (too scared to try it yet). Do I really want to turn my hobby into a job?

Okay, so here is my photographic dream: To carry on studying in my spare time and enjoy the journey of learning. To pursue personal projects that excite and challenge me. And also to sell my own work that I have chosen to do. And for those sales to support me.

That's my dream. It's a long way off. The reality is I've had a couple of nearmisses where I've nearly had my work licensed. I've sold a few prints to friends and family. More importantly, I get some positive feedback on my work from my tutor, my peers and other contacts I've made. This is promising and I've been pleased to get my work out there. But where can it lead?

In his post, Mike asks why art students are seldom successful in carving a career in their chosen field:

"Why is this? It seems to boil down to failures of either confidence or taste. [...] as if they cannot take themselves seriously enough, cannot muster enough ambition. They're content to dabble. Or, they just haven't engaged enough with art to really get how it works or figure out how to do it. In photography, especially, what seems to trip up most amateurs is a lack of self confidence. The single most destructive impulse I've consistently observed in amateur photographers, after working with them more or less continuously over 22 years, is their insecurity about not being liked or understood, and their concomitant anxiousness to please others. That may, indeed, be the principal legacy of a good art school education: the crucial insight that it is only by pleasing herself that the artist can ultimately please others. It's why professionals, whose job is, after all, to create things that are immediately and obviously pleasing to broad numbers of viewers, are so seldom remembered for their artistry."

This is what scares me the most; I think this is me. Well some of it anyway. The above paragraph really grabbed me by the throat and shook me. I now have to ask myself some important questions if I really want to pursue my dream.

I'll pick this up another time...

∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗
© phojus / Justin Lane 2007-2012 all rights reserved ∗ RSS ∗ Buy my book! :)
∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗

Artificial Light

I'm making a start on the Artificial Light chapter of The Art of Photography. It's the only chapter of the course that I'm not happy doing. I have no experience of working with artificial light beyond the on-camera flash. Even so, I've had a play around with the flash settings on my DSLR and got really confused by them. I've produced mostly duff shots whenever I've tried. And now, I don't try.

Some notes from chapter 6

Artificial light is not often used by amateur photographers. Natural light is readily available and is suitable for most outdoors situations.

Artificial light can be described in two ways:

The available light found indoors and used to illuminate streets and buildings at night. Or found lighting.

The light produced by photographic lighting equipment. Or deliberate lighting.

Artificial light is often much weaker than daylight and requires high sensitivity ISO or the use of tripod.

∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗
© phojus / Justin Lane 2007-2012 all rights reserved ∗ RSS ∗ Buy my book! :)
∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗
