Rachael: Sony Ericsson's custom Android UI caught on video

If this is legit, color me impressed and intrigued. The Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog posted what they're calling an exclusive demo video of Rachael's UI, Rachael of course being the codename for SE's forthcoming first Android phone. Whatever's in the vid, be it the actual UI or a fanboy's cartoon dream, looks great - a rather HTC-like custom UI with eye-pleasing apps for messaging, twitter, music player, and so on. The Xperia-branded Rachael is said to be on tap for launch later this year, and will be built on the Snapdragon platform and feature a crazy-big display measuring no less than four inches diagonally.

It's cool that T-Mobile is offering some personalization options to make the Android-based myTouch 3G look a little cooler (custom cases? custom back panel printing? hard to tell). It's not cool that myTouch is basically a rebadged HTC Magic and not the newer, better, BETTER HTC Hero. Also, if it really launches at $199 on contract, that's twice what an iPhone 3G costs. C'mon, T-Mo, you're better than this!

HulloMail brings voice-email to Android for free

Launching in the US on the Fourth of July, HulloMail will initially be available to Android users only. iPhone, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile device support will follow. HulloMail converts your voice mails to an MP3 and sends it as an attachment to your email account, making it compatible with IMAP and keeping you synched up. You won't need to change your number like Google Voice users, and if GV feels like overkill to you, HulloMail might be the right alternative. I'll be checking out the beta over the next few days.

Horace Luke is HTC's Chief Innovation Officer. He heads up the team responsible for the design of the Hero, Diamond, and some other ground-breaking devices. If you hate the chin, this is the man to blame; if you love it, call him a genius. After the unveiling of the Hero, which I will post more on later, a group of us got to sit down with Mr. Luke for nearly half an hour. I came back with three videos.

In this one, Horace talks about public perception, the Teflon coating, the screen's anti-fingerprint properties, revisions, and the marriage of engineering and aesthetics. Also see parts two and three.

The software synthesizer in the background, Reason, is doing the heavy lifting here. But it is cool to see Android used as a MIDI controller - working over Wi-Fi, BTW. Looks like he's adjusting the velocity of four channels and then using the ball in a box deal for filter controls. Makes me miss the days on end I used to spend sitting in front of a computer, tweaking elements of my own composition until I was happy with what I... wait a minute...
