My name is Laurie and I am a music teacher living in Houston, TX. I first started blogging in February of 2004 as a way to participate in photo memes with my new digital camera. I enjoyed both blogging and photoblogging so much that in September 2004 I split my photos off to their own site. I have been an avid blogger ever since. My sites have traveled through different homes and different names, but I still maintain both a personal blog and a photoblog.

I have a hard time defining my photographic style. I venture out and explore the neighborhoods, architecture, parks, museums, festivals, and all the other little details that go into making this city unique. I use both digital and film cameras.

Photos are posted Monday through Friday and each week focuses on a new location, event or theme. Outtakes from each theme are posted to my Flickr account. On the weekend I post a mirror project self portrait. You can see archives of my previous work at my old website here.

This Week: Between Here and There II

Back to Chicago, but first I have to tell you that my contest on Saturday was VERY successful. I had 17 students make the choir they were auditioning for, a new record for my school. And now that the contest is over I can look forward to the next thing and that is a trip to the country of Panama during Thanksgiving. I really haven't been thinking about it because things have been so incredibly busy at work and now suddenly I have two weeks to get everything together. Eeek.

This week's photos were taken when I was walking to and from places in Chicago. This photo shows, again, the amazing architecture in Chicago. Building after interesting building one right after the other.

This Week: Brazos Bend

One of the stars of Brazos Bend park is the American alligator. They are all over the park and when they are out you walk right past them on the trail paths. The day we were there however was crisp and cool and the alligators were not sunning themselves on the path, but instead staying in the warmer water. But walking the path I came across this amazing bark formation so I had my alligator sighting after all.

I finally went out to Brazos Bend, a 5,000 acre state park extremely popular with nature photographers that is about an hour from Houston. I am decidedly not a nature photographer, but my assignment group was photographing it for the month of October so out I went. Luckily our group meet-up turned out to be a crisp, cool, beautiful morning and it was very enjoyable.

On my way back to my hotel I needed to find a place to eat dinner. My Yelp iPhone app lead me to the Billy Goat Tavern. I am not up on my Saturday Night Live lore or Chicago baseball history, but I got caught up while I waited for my food. I usually am not good about making impulse decisions, but I'm so glad that I took a chance in this case. The story behind the restaurant is really great and I'm glad I didn't miss this place.

This week a peek inside some of the shops and businesses that caught my eye.

P.S. I simultaneously love and hate having this huge backlog of Chicago stuff to post. It is a great thing to fall back on when I don't have a chance to process new stuff for the blog, but there is still so much of it I don't know when I'm ever going to get around to showing it all to you. And the more I show you Chicago the further behind I fall with other things. I need to stop taking pictures!

This Week: The Best Camera

You've heard the saying "the best camera is the one you have with you." All the expensive gear in the world doesn't mean anything if it isn't with you when you need to get the photo. The iPhone has exploded in terms of camera use because it is so convenient. I personally have stopped carrying my point and shoot because the iPhone takes care of what I need and I already have it with me without having to add an additional gadget to my day to day routine. This week photos from the iPhone, the camera I always have with me.

Here's one thing I loved about Chicago. Not only were there so many wonderful things to see, but wonderful views along the way. The brown building on the left, the one where you can see the whole building, was my hotel and my room was facing the river. I got that fabulous location for $75 a night through Priceline. I'm a Priceline believer.

This Week: Between Here and There

Well I missed posting for the first time in a very long time. I am fighting my seasonal allergies and I had a concert on Tuesday. I was bleary eyed Wednesday morning and trying to decide if I was even going to go to work. By the time I convinced myself to go and was in the car I remembered that I forgot to set up the day's post. Oops. Oh well.

This photo was taken on my way to dinner the first night. Merchandise Mart is on the right and Wacker Drive is on the left. I absolutely love water so it would be wonderful to live in a city with a river running through it. This was such a peaceful moment and I'm glad I captured it for my memories.

This Week: Between Here and There

Back to Chicago to celebrate the fact that I finally finished editing my Chicago photos. Hooray! I still have many more to share here over the next few months, but at least the processing is finished. Many of the images I want to share weren't at a specific location or event but were taken when I was walking to one place or another. This is Marina City. From wikipedia:

Marina City is a mixed-use residential/commercial building complex occupying an entire city block on State Street in Chicago, Illinois. It lies on the north bank of the Chicago River, directly across from Chicago's Loop district. The complex consists of two corn cob-shaped 65-story tall residential towers, a saddle-shaped auditorium building, and a mid-rise hotel building all contained on a raised platform cantilevered over defunct railroad tracks adjacent to the river. Beneath the raised platform at river level is a small marina for pleasure craft.

The buildings are so distinctive. In fact it is amazing how much of the architecture in Chicago is so distinctive. I don't think I really realized that when I first booked my trip, but if you love architecture as I do, Chicago is definitely the place to go.

I finally uploaded more images from my Chicago artwalk. You can see them at the beginning of this Flickr set.

Yay for the return of Photoblog Postcript, not to mention the Flickr Footnote on Thursday and Mirror Project this weekend. School is finally settling into a routine which means maybe my life can return to normal. The beginning of the year is my favorite part of the school year, but not the first few weeks of school. They are painful with extremely long hours and are always accompanied by getting sick. This year seemed harder than most, but I think the worst is behind me.

Taking a break from Chicago photos, but don't worry, there are so many more. They will probably pop up every two to three weeks.

But on with something new. My photo group had the opportunity to photograph the downtown YMCA. The building was designed in 1941 and is scheduled to be knocked down at the end of next year. I am sure when it first opened it was an incredibly beautiful building, rich with architectural details especially on the inside. Over the years many of the details have been covered up but some are still there if you look. It was a great opportunity.

This Week: Chicago Art Walk

The final piece I visited on my art walk was The Flamingo by Alexander Calder. Even though I was exhausted and my feet were killing me I went round and around the sculpture photographing it from different angles and looking at it from different perspectives. I was energized by it. I've always liked Calder's work, but viewing it and the way it interacted with the buildings around it made me really fall in love. I'll have another view from this piece tomorrow.

I was inspired by this experience to create a Calder Flickr gallery. Flickr galleries are new ways to share the work of other photographers. It was fun to search through Flickr looking for the most complimentary photos of Calder's work. Stop by here and check out that fabulous Calder Red from around the world.

The Picasso. While I was standing here I kept thinking of the scene from the Fugitive where Harrison Ford is running through the plaza and the police are shouting about him running towards the Picasso. And here it was, the Picasso and there I was in Chicago. The audio tour entry for this one was so interesting. Apparently the city has had a love/hate relationship with this sculpture. I of course love it, but it is different when you are a city resident.

This Week: Chicago Art Walk

This is the Four Seasons mosaic by Marc Chagall. It is a lovely piece with beautiful colors throughout. I'm usually only so-so on Chagall's work, but I really liked this piece. But when I think of it I will think of funny little stories. Like how I got completely turned around on this art walk and l stopped in a plaza to figure out where I was so I could find this mosaic and it turned out to be right over my shoulder. Or how I ended up right back in this plaza the next day for a taping of the NPR show Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me which records in the Chase building, yet I didn't put the two things together earlier in my trip.

This Week: Chicago Art Walk

Tired of Chicago photos yet? Well after this week I need to catch up with some other photo sets going on around here, but don't worry, there will be many more from Chicago. The Chicago Loop Alliance had these wonderful audio walking tours of downtown. They had one for Millennium Park, one for Chicago landmarks and one for Chicago artwork. You download the mp3s to your portable player and then walk around and get a short story of each of the stops on the tour. I definitely recommend these for someone who wants to explore Chicago on their own.

This is Monument with Standing Beast by Jean DuBuffet. It is one of three monumental sculptural commissions of DuBuffet's in the United States. One of the other pieces happens to be in Houston. It was unveiled in 1984.

One final view from the Sears, now Willis, Tower. I think the Sears Tower is one of those things that everyone should do when they visit Chicago, especially if you are fearless and want to walk out on the Ledge. But as many people told me ahead of time, the views are much better at the John Hancock Center, the atmosphere is laid back and the lines aren't as crazy. Go to Sears once, go to John Hancock always.

This Week: The Last Day of Sears

This is my foot on The Ledge of the Sears (now Willis) Tower. The Ledge is a series of glass boxes that extend about 4 feet out over the city from the Skydeck. Many people were walking out there, laying down on the floor and staring down far below them. As for me, this is as far as I could go, but at least I put a toe out there. That's big considering my fear of edges.

This Week: The Last Day of Sears

I will not recount here what it took to get to the top of the Sears Tower. Suffice it to say it was an ordeal. I have a weird thing about heights. I love viewing things from up high. Absolutely love it. But I'm afraid of certain kinds of heights. Recently I've decided that I'm afraid of edges. I could look out on these beautiful views forever, but I freeze up when I get near open balconies, open stair cases or anywhere where I can look down.

I finally added the companion photos from last week's Magnificent Mile walk to my Chicago Flickr set. The photos are at the end of the set. You can start here.

This Week: The Magnificent Mile

At the end of my walk down the Magnificent Mile was the beautiful neo-Gothic Tribune Tower. Correspondents for the Chicago Tribune brought back rocks and bricks from a variety of historically important sites throughout the world. Many of these have been incorporated into the lowest levels of the building and are labeled with their location of origin. Stones included in the wall are from sites like the Taj Mahal, the Parthenon, Palace of Westminster, the Great Pyramid, Notre-Dame, the Great Wall of China, the Berlin Wall among others. Here was a little piece of Texas home in the Alamo. In all, there are 136 fragments in the building.

I link to this Flickr set every year on the anniversary of September 11th. It is a powerful journal of the day from one photographer's view point and I highly recommend going through the whole set and looking at each photo and reading each description. We will never forget.

This Week: The Magnificent Mile

The Water Tower was one of the few structures that survived the Great Chicago Fire and the only one still standing today. It was built in 1869 by architect William W. Boyington. It is made from Lemont limestone and stands 154 feet tall. It is used as a Visitors Center and has a space inside for a photography gallery. When I was there the photographs being displayed were taken days after the Great Chicago Fire. It was the perfect exhibit for that structure and I'm so glad I got to see them. The destruction was incredible and it was a neat experience to be looking at these photos from over 100 years ago and be standing in one of the few structures that was still standing. Here is the Water Tower at night.

This Week: The Magnificent Mile

I didn't do specific research on the Magnificent Mile so this church was a wonderful surprise. I spied it from across the street and made a beeline to it as quickly as possible. Who wouldn't! Look at that beautiful architecture. This is Fourth Presbyterian Church. The church was dedicated in 1914 and is in the Gothic style. Along with the Water Tower, which is older, Fourth Church is one of the oldest surviving structures on Michigan Avenue north of the river.

This Week: The Magnificent Mile

I'm not really a shopping girl, but I had to take a stroll down the magnificent mile, Chicago's high end shopping district. I had planned to go the Sears Tower first thing that morning, but a rainy and overcast start to the day shuffled my plans around. I found myself walking the famous shopping mile. Window shopping the whole way.

This Week: Chicago at Night

I surprisingly felt very safe at night for the most part. The times I didn't is just because I really didn't know the neighborhood and wasn't sure whether I should or shouldn't be scared. When you live in an area you know the good, bad and the ugly, but when you are visiting you are taking a guess. I was mostly walking towards Michigan Avenue and the main tourist areas at night so it felt pretty safe. And it always captivated me especially the lights and the elevated train.

Today marks my one year anniversary at Pixyblog. I have been photoblogging for almost 5 years now, but I would say that my best year has been this last year at Pixyblog. Thanks to Richard for creating a beautiful, polished and professional looking service and for being there to answer my constant questions.

This Week: The Art Institute of Chicago

The biggest surprise to me was how much I was taken with Nighthawks by Edward Hopper. It was on my list of things to run by and see, but I thought I would give it a few minutes and then move on. I honestly thought I would be much more taken with American Gothic which is also an iconic image. Even though American Gothic was only steps away it was Nighthawks that had my full attention. There is something about seeing it in person. The way that he portrayed light in the painting is perfect. It has quickly zoomed to one of the top spots of my list of favorite paintings which is again surprising considering how much I love impressionist work. Now I really want to see more Hopper work in person including New York Movie. Guess I have to go to New York City soon!

Many, many more photographs from the Art Institute in this Flickr set.

This Week: The Art Institute of Chicago

There was so much to this museum and I barely scratched the surface. As I was standing here waiting for the shot I wanted I thought about all the rooms I could see branching off from this central court and all the wonderful art that those rooms must contain. It would probably take days to see everything they have on display in this fabulous place. But if I return again some day I would head right back to the Impressionist rooms first because I can never see them enough.

This Week: The Art Institute of Chicago

I love art, love paintings and am especially drawn to the work of the Impressionists. I am lucky that I have been able to see a large number of Impressionist works that have toured through Houston. In fact in one year there were four different shows with many masterworks including some from the Art Institute of Chicago. The depth and breadth of the Art Institutes' Impressionist collection is astounding. Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Degas, Van Gogh and more. Room after room after room with work from these masters. Every where you turn was another famous name or another iconic image.

Then there was the Monet room. Nothing moves me like seeing artwork by Monet. There is something about him that touches my heart and lifts my spirit. It is an emotional experience for me and to be in a whole room full of nothing but incredibly famous Monet's was powerful. I sat on the bench in the room for a long time just staring at one wall, then another, then another, soaking in the room. The longer I sat there the closer I was to tears over the experience. Just thinking back on that day takes me right back to that bench. What a wonderful moment for me.

This Week: The Art Institute of Chicago

One of the most famous paintings in the world is certainly one of the stars of the museum. A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat is an example of pointillism and it is a very large example indeed. Pointillism is a style of painting in which small dots create the impression of other colors and the blending of colors. Seurat worked on this piece for two years. Artist Frederic Clay Bartlett bought this painting for $22,000 from one Seurat's students and later donated it to the Art Institute of Chicago. The gallery in which the painting hangs is named after Bartlett's wife, Helen.

This Week: The Art Institute of Chicago

Yes! Chicago photos! I know! It has been over a month since my trip and this is the first you are seeing of Chicago. I take a long time to edit photos. Actually in this case it has just taken me a long time to get to the point where I was ready to edit my photos. I have lots more to edit, but I can finally start sharing photos. The very first place I visited in Chicago was the Art Institute of Chicago. I love museums and art museums so this was a natural. The building itself is beautiful with this beautiful grand staircase and the amazing light streaming through from the skylight.

Let me say a huge thank you to the Art Institute of Chicago for allowing visitors to take pictures. It was so refreshing. I do love the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, but their photography policies are draconian especially compared with other major museums around the world.

If you want to read my blog entries on my trips you can go here, but I warn you it is practically a book. I wrote very detailed and VERY long journal entries.

Today the students start back to school. The two weeks getting ready for the school year have for some reason been extremely hectic. I hope things settle down once school starts.

I stayed at the Marriott Plaza this time and was surprised when I walked into the courtyard and found birds wandering the grounds. Pardon me, pheasants! The sign in the courtyard with the title "Pheasants at Liberty" says that there are several varieties at the hotel and that they are hand fed by the staff each day. It was such a pleasant little surprise. In fact my whole stay there was pleasant. I think I'll stay there again next summer.

Well things are finally settling down after a crazy week. It was much more hectic and disjointed than I planned, but I think the semblance of a routine is starting to emerge. Every year I long for a routine for my time after work, but it never seems to fall in place. I hope I can get it right this year. Work was also less settled than I planned, but that is because I got new office furniture. Hooray! It came on Wednesday, but took the better part of two days to put together. I finally got most everything settled by Friday afternoon. I think that next week things will settle down even more. They better because the students come back the week after that. Regular photo posting will resume tomorrow. Have a good Sunday.

Well everything has finally caught up to me. I'm going to take a week off from the photoblog to get everything straightened out.

I got my computer back on Wednesday at noon which is amazing since I shipped it on Monday afternoon at five. It went from Texas to Kansas, got a new hard drive and was back in my hands in less than 48 hours. If you ever need any upgrades or repairs to your Macintosh, iPod or iPhone I can not recommend iResQ highly enough.

Now with a computer that has a much larger hard drive I can finally start working on my Chicago photos, but first I have some photo odds and ends that I want to clean up. Problem is I just haven't had time since I got my computer back to work on them. Tomorrow I start back to my day job. Yes, school year 2009-2010 will soon be underway. This week I set my own work hours. It is a good way to ease back into teaching and I hope to set up a good after work routine which will of course include lots of photo editing.

Next week I anticipate I will show you a look at some of the odds and ends that I will be working on and after that hopefully some Chicago photos should finally roll. I'm going to spread them out otherwise they would take over the blog for months, but I am looking forward to getting them processed and ready for viewing. Thank you for supporting my blog and make sure to stop back by on the 17th for some new things.

Onward.

This Week: Hodge Podge

This week a hodge podge of photos to share with you. This is from a recent assignment with the local photography group, Assignment: Houston. The assignment was trains and I found this overgrown track near my house.

Today I'm sending off my laptop, which is my main computer and my photo editing computer, off to get a bigger hard drive. I haven't started on the Chicago photos because it really needed this item before I throw 1,000 photos at it. Hopefully I'll have it back at the end of the week and everything will go smoothly. Then I can finally start that massive editing job.

This Week: Walk in the Rain

Saturday July 18th was the second annual Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk and there were over 900 different events. There were several different walks in the Houston area, but I chose Discovery Green because a.) I love Discovery Green and b.) this happened the day after I got back from Chicago and was in the evening and I really needed to sleep in that day.

So what happened on our Worldwide Photowalk? It rained! Houston has spent a large part of the summer months without rain and it was desperately needed, but it sure picked a bad time. The worst of the weather lasted about 30 minutes and many did manage to get some photos in including me. Before this shoot I did not have many rain photos in my arsenal. Now I do including one of my favorite photos of the year which will be coming up later in the week. Rain photography in the end is a lot of fun.

This Week: Texas State Capitol

This is the state capitol building in Austin, TX. It is the largest capitol in the US in terms of square footage and is taller than the capitol in Washington DC. The cornerstone was laid in 1885 and work was completed three years later. It is in the Italian Renaissance Revival style and is made of limestone and pink granite.

I had an amazing time in Chicago. It was so much fun and I'm still recovering. I walked and walked and walked and took an obscene amount of photos. You will be subjected to them, but it will be a while. It is going to take quite a while to sort through them. I can highly recommend Chicago as a travel destination if you like big cities (and I do!)

Happy Moon Landing Day! This is a big deal in Houston!

This Week: Shopping South Congress

From a visual perspective my favorite shop was the Big Top Candy Shop. We have a fun candy store here in Houston as well, but I loved the decorations, posters, and the way the vintage circus theme was carried throughout the store. It was really beautiful and visually appealing. I could have photographed everything in there.

I used to love these candy sticks when I was a kid. Watermelon was my favorite. My tastes now lean more towards baked goods. I am not as big on straight up hard sugar candy, but it sure is pretty to look at.

This Week: Shopping South Congress

This sign made me laugh. Samurai Umbrella!

At the beginning of this year I made a resolution to make travel a bigger part of my life. So far I have gone to Goliad and Austin in my home state and today I will be taking my first trip out of state to Chicago. I'm excited and nervous and will be broke when I get back even though I'm only there a few days, but it will be worth it. You can follow along on my Twitter or Flickr account. I'll be back Friday, but never fear, new photos will be posted all this week.

Two weeks ago I made a quick trip to Austin to visit with a college friend and her husband. One of the things on our itinerary was a trip to the quirky shopping district on South Congress Avenue. We mainly did window shopping, but the windows were quite interesting indeed.

This Week: Astros vs. Royals

I am happy to report that my very long Astros jinx is now over. I went to another game last night and finally, for the first time, the Astros won while I was in the building. I don't go to very many games but I always felt guilty knowing that they probably lose because I was there. No more! They won and the curse is broken. The night ended with fireworks so it was a pretty wonderful evening in my book.

This Week: Astros vs. Royals

One of the things I had on my list of summer activities was to take in a ball game at Minute Maid Park. I don't go nearly enough. While football is my favorite sport, I enjoy watching baseball. I took in the Astros vs. Royals, but sorry to say the Astros lost. I very well may be a jinx since I haven't seen them win a game, but this one at least went into extra innings. Almost!

This is my first time to submit to the Photoblog Awards, so if you have a vote to spare I would certainly appreciate it.

I got the new iPhone a few weeks ago and I love it. I was already an iPhone user, but I only had the first version. I did not upgrade to to the 3G when that came out last year so this was a big upgrade for me. My favorite thing about this other than the much faster 3G speed and having GPS? The camera of course! I'm still getting the hang of it, but right now I don't see a need to carry my pocket camera anymore. Yes a pocket camera has many more options, but this is smaller and I will always have it with me. As for video cameras? Forget it. Check out this video I shot last night with the iPhone of 4th of July fireworks. iPhone wins.

It's all greek to me, but it is fun to look at. I don't think notes for my choir director job would be nearly as interesting.

After the "tour" otherwise known as a history of the company given over the microphone the beer taps are opened. For the $5 admission price everyone gets a free tasting glass and four tokens to use at the taps. I guess the photographers were more interested in taking pictures than drinking beer. They do have a very nice root beer as well.

This Week: Saint Arnold Brewing Company

A few weekends ago I visited Texas' oldest craft brewery, Saint Arnold, based here in Houston. Every Saturday they host what they call a "tour" but what I call a gigantic beer drinking party in their very cramped facility. After hearing about the history of the company and the vision of Saint Arnold the taps are open and the beer tasting is on. From a photography stand point, you are allowed to wander completely around the facility so I was able to get right up to a lot of the equipment. It was a fun, if not extremely hot day in the non-air conditioned facility, for this non-beer drinker.
