Who doesn’t want to spend a week in the Caribbean during a Canadian winter? Raise your hands! I can’t see them! So I did spend a week there. In the Dominican Republic, again.

When I like an area, I like to go back there to discover more things and report on more things as well.

Oven heat

A while ago, we went to the Ovens Natural Park. That was at a time when the temperatures were still reasonable. At least during the day. Somehow, I always find a way to go camping when the night temps drop to near freezing.

That was no different this time. Happily, my sleeping bag is one I bought in Winnipeg and can resist until –20C.

Weird experiences

The landscape of tech has changed a lot over the past 15 years. With “Tech” I mean photography as well as electronics, such as computers, printers, or even audio gear.

Back when I had just arrived in Winnipeg, there was a great store called Future Shop in Polo Park.

Down to the waterline

The perspective of a city, any city, is usually from the streets. After all, streets are what a city has the most of. But some cities have more options than others.

Halifax is such a city. The famous Harbour Hopper service allows tourists to get a tour of the city through the streets and finish with a tour on the water, all inside the same vehicle.

Fumbling in the dark

It has been a long time since I went out in the dark to shoot the night sky. Skies here in Nova Scotia are more often than not covered by a layer of “something”. Lately, that has been smoke from forest fires, before it was the usual clouds.

Add to that that shooting the night sky from the same beaches over and over again is somewhat boring, and you end up with me not going to shoot in the night. So, a few days ago we decided to spend a night at a campground.

Summertime. Time of heat, heatwaves, thunderstorms and lazy days on the water. Recently, I went on a trip to Brier Island, Nova Scotia. For those who know, those trips are whale-watching trips.

Personally, I don’t care for fishing, even if my life depended on it. No, I like to watch them, see what they are up to and so on. Photography for this comes in second.

Southwest

Yeah, just a direction. Or an origin. When I lived in the Netherlands, “southwest” usually meant rain and hard wind. Nothing good comes from the southwest.

As you should now know, I live in Nova Scotia, one of the smaller provinces in Canada. While the province may be small, the distances are still quite extensive.

Nova Scotia Aurora

The past few weeks have been full of auroral promises. Not many have come true. So, for those who are in dire need of some aurora, here are some pictures of a previous solar storm result.

For sure, these pictures have been treated somewhat, although nothing was done to make them look unnatural.

Walking on the edge of summer

Summer is coming. Sounds much better than “Winter is coming”, right? Unless you have heard this for weeks already, and nothing shows up. A few nicer days here and there, entombed in sheets of rain, fog and hard wind.

But it is always a pleasure to go out in one of those dry downpours, if only for a few hours.
