Ghana with the FMCIC

Troy and I had the opportunity to go with the FMCIC to the Ghana Mission this past month. The FMCIC is coaching and working with some Ghana pastors and giving them the tools necessary to be able to get their status as their own denomination. In a culture where structured denominations is scarce there is a great need for denominations in the country that people can trust. Along with that, a small group of the pastors there have acquired land and are in the beginning stages of starting a school for women. So Troy and I were in charge of all things tech and shot a lot of video and took lots of pictures. The team we went with consisted of a wide variety of Free Methodists, from raging big oil, I want my kids to pray in school conservatives to midwife loving, tree-hugging hippies. It made for quite a trip of heated discussion. I learned quite a bit from both sides. Here is a link to all the pictures. Videos will be released on a schedule over time.

This first picture was my favourite moment. If you look very closely, you can see a guy have a smoke sitting on the goods of the flipped over truck.

We will have a small video we made about these drummer guys from the North.

We watched the Africa cup and Ghana in the quarter finals in the streets of Accra.

Costa Rica Pictures from 2012

Rachel and I went to Costa Rica with our friends Brandon and Beth Huybers. This was strictly a vacation. Couldn’t have picked a better place that was friendly to tourists but still wrapped in adventure every single day. This was by far the most active trip I’ve been on. We went zip lining, surfing, white water rafting, beer tasting, hiking and night tours. We found a micro-brewery called Volcano Brewing Company that also is part of a wider project of sustainable living, eco farm and new forms of energy. Iceland Photos

Some friends and I went to Iceland last week. It was more of a spur of the moment decision after watching Sigur Ros’ documentary called Heima, which is the most remarkable cinematography I’ve seen in a film, and a few months later we were on a plane. It was extremely cheap (plane, food, car rental, cottage all for under $1000 a person) and our travel points flew us for free, so it was kind of a no brainer. Then after seeing photos from the internet, I could not wait to see this new wonderland. The pictures took me a while to get them all together since we had a lot of work to get done since we were away, but here are the much asked for photos from the trip. Stephanie will be posting her photos as well in which time I’ll update this post with a link to hers. We also brought a wedding dress, just because it made taking pictures even more entertaining.

The country was unreal. We said it was like visiting a new planet every day.

1. Moss was everywhere, fields of bright green moss growing off lava rock wherever you looked. It was soft and squishy to walk on and is unlike any landscape I’ve seen.
2. Lava fields and volcanoes. Dan and I climbed an active volcano and stood on top and could see the lava rock fields that extended over 20 kilometers.
3. Glaciers, this was awesome.
4. Caves, I think I could live in one.
6. Waterfalls, every single moment you could look in a different direction and see water falling, and it’s so beautiful.
7. Ocean, contrasted with the black beaches and lava rock, it just stands out different and is so beautiful.
8. Mountains, we stayed in a cottage on the side of one, and it was unreal.
9. Geysers and Hot Springs, the water smells horrid, but still is unreal.

Our days were full of watching these sites. It never stopped. By far the most visually stimulating experience I’ve had and my favourite country for sites. It was a phenomenal ten days. Here is some of my favourites. You can see all the photos here and below I’ve pasted some of my favourites.

Rachel loves to take photos. I like to be behind the camera. So after getting the cheesy hanging from the tree and peeking out from trees shots out of the way, we started to get a bit more creative. Here was a few that we took this afternoon with the family.

Samuel Lukhele from Swaziland

Rachel and I spent a few weeks in Swaziland a few years ago with the Lukhele family. Samuel stole all of our hearts as soon as we met him. I wrote about some of his quotes back when we were there. He asked so many questions about the most ridiculous things because he was so curious about the world, and this was at his old age. It was beautiful. He knew how to care and he knew how to rest. I just remember watching him sitting on his chair and enjoying life, I loved watching him so much I just couldn’t stop taking his picture. At one point, as I was reaching my limits of physical exhaustion after five minutes of digging a hole he told me to stop because “there is no need to die today.” Samuel’s physical body died this week. May God be with your family and all those who will miss you from day to day.

Donlands and Mortimer with The Wilderness of Manitoba

The Sarnia music scene is unbelievable. For a city our size (73,000), we bring in some great bands and the people in Sarnia are awesome. Tonight was Empty Spaces 19th show and it was excellent. The two local opening acts were excellent (Kirk Ramsey and Katie Moran). The two bands that came from Toronto blew my mind; Donlands and Mortimer with The Wilderness of Manitoba Both were full of excellent music, with obviously brilliant musicians. They were tight, exciting and really drew in the crowd. The Sarnia crowd knows how to love on a band. Dance a lot and give them encores, even if you never heard of the band before. Seriously, bands from out of town absolutely love playing at Empty Spaces shows because of the reception they get from the crowds of people that have never heard of them. If you get a chance, go listen to both those bands. Here are some of my favourite pics I took from throughout the night.
