There was so much I loved about photographing this Denver engagement session! For starters, Lisa and Chad are such a fun and sweet couple. They both love all that Denver life has to offer, and it was so fun to make our way through the nooks and crannies of downtown and incorporate some of their favorite, classic backdrops. It was a sunny, winter day – and every scene we stumbled upon offered tons of diversity in lighting and architecture, which is my personal favorite scenario for an engagement session!

This year has brought so many wonderful weddings – I am one happy, grateful photographer. I’m going to have to look through this whole site to see if I’ve said this before – but this simple Denver wedding may be my all time favorite wedding day. Ladies and gents, meet Carly and Andy. They adore each other; they cherish their story and wrapped their entire wedding day in the sweet details of how they met and who supported them along the way. It was an honor to document their day as it unfolded.

If you are plotting to celebrate a genuine wedding day within Denver’s natural beauty, and want to keep the planning simple but the experience amazing for you and your guests – do what these two did. I don’t think you could go wrong. First: get ready at home. Carly dressed with her ladies at a dear friend’s house, and Andy suited up at home in their apartment. Second: set aside some alone time in a meaningful place. Carly’s mom and sister escorted her back home to see Andy for the fist time, and we arranged it to be on their cozy sunroom balcony – the very spot where Andy proposed. Then: host an outdoor ceremony beneath the columns of the Pavillion in Cheesman Park, and walk from the park with your guests through the private, back door entrance to the Denver Botanical Gardens for a lovely, intimate evening reception. Also: choose a family style dinner so your guests interact, pass dishes, and serve each other dollops (they had outstanding food from Catering by Design). Add an authentic Colorado bluegrass band (Blue Grama was stellar!), share milkshakes in lieu of cake, hope for flawless weather, and – voila! – wedding day perfection. At least in my book :)

Of course, the sincere love and the depth of support from their family and friends is what tied everything together beautifully. Ya can’t buy that stuff ;) Carly, I have a hunch you may be reading this – I send my biggest THANKS to you and Andy for including me in this day. I hope you enjoy this handful of personal favorites:

Blue Sky Resort in Breckenridge, Colorado is a lovely host for a cozy wedding day and a treat for any wedding photographer. Lauren and Josh’s wedding day brought a blue Colorado sky, as well as some extra chilly temperatures, so we celebrated in the grand, yet intimate, lobby – within deep, rich colors and textures that made for an elegant ceremony, led by a dear friend of the couple.

Lauren and Josh were such a sweet pair – both so genuine and slightly camera-shy, which was a natural fit for my sneaky eye. They celebrated into the night with family, friends, kiddos, and cupcakes! Here are some favorites from the day:

I’ve had the fortune of photographing a handful of Rocky Mountain weddings in the Aspen area of Colorado, but I have to say that Stephanie and Kurt’s wedding day was definitely my kind of Aspen. They celebrated with an intimate ceremony surrounded by fall color perfection and an Ashcroft Mountain backdrop, followed by dinner with about 50 of their nearest and dearest at Pine Creek Cookhouse. This is the type of wedding day I could photograph every day of the week: a happy-go-lucky couple in the perfect mountain setting without a care in the world but to marry each other. Even the weather seemed made to order for a fall mountain wedding – the clouds were kind to us the entire day, never dumping snow or rain, and setting the scene for an amazing sunset.

We kicked off the wedding weekend with a barbeque welcome dinner for the close family and friends who traveled from afar, and we wrapped the weekend with a post-wedding jaunt to a few of the bride and groom’s favorite bars in Aspen. The best thing about photographing intimate destination weddings is I get to document events surrounding the wedding ceremony, so by the time the actual wedding rolls around, I’ve had a chance to visit with guests, learn names and faces, and just about everyone involved knows who I am and what I’m up to – so all is comfy in front of my lens. Best-case scenario in my book. From the barbeque, to the ceremony, to the dinner, to the J Bar – I felt like family in this crowd. Stephanie and Kurt even had a place setting for me at their wedding dinner, and a Guinness for me at the end of the night. I got to return the kindness by surprising them with some extra goodies added to their album, which is in route to them as I type this.

I will begin this story by quoting the father of the bride from his dinner toast, ” it was a crystal blue sky, on a crystal clear day, in the Crystal River Valley of Colorado”. Crystal and Jesse welcomed their loved ones to River Valley Ranch in Carbondale, Colorado for a beautiful mountain wedding day. After days of rain, their wedding day skies were bursting with sunshine, without a single cloud in sight. It was natural for my jaw to drop upon arriving at the venue, with a snow-dusted Mt. Sopris as a backdrop. But what stopped me in my tracks this wedding day were the touching words from Crystal and Jesse’s ceremony, given by a dear family friend. I found myself pausing my shutter finger quite often and tuning in to his very sincere words and wishes for the bride and groom.

The ceremony and dinner were followed with dancing the night away in the barn – which made for a pretty perfect Colorado wedding. It was an honor to be there, Crystal and Jesse. Here are some of my favorites:

I really shouldn’t be writing this. I’d rather let this story speak for itself, because I can hardly find the words to do any justice to the brilliance, culture, diversity, and straight up fun this downtown Denver wedding day had in store. I spent the day with Vanessa and Juan as it unfolded from a beautiful, traditional ceremony at The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception into an all-night party at the Magnolia Hotel Ballroom. The music and dancing kept everyone out of their seats and I think the tequila kept the high spirits even higher. I loved every minute of it!

I’ve added morning engagement sessions this year to welcome the growing popularity of engagement photography – a bit of a challenge for this night owl photographer type [ ;) ] but, oh so refreshing to have an early start to the day! Thank you, Denver, for the perfect weather: blue skies and crispy light breeze – ahh. Sarah and Juri love the Denver, Colorado weather too, and appreciate it even more now that they live in Houston. They will be making their way home to Colorado for their wedding next year, and I met up with them at the Denver Art Museum to kick off their engagement session. We wrapped the session at Cheesman Park with their dog, Rosie – such a sweet pooch! It turned out to be such a fun morning, and produced a set of photographs that I love! Thanks so much Sarah, Juri, and Rosie.

It is good to be home. Especially so, I bet, when you are home to be married. Especially even more so, I bet, when you are a globe-trotting couple like Gina and Jon. They both now reside in Boston; Gina’s roots are in Colorado and Nebraska, Jon’s are near Chicago – and they met in Africa. I am the lucky one who got to photograph their wedding weekend that gathered friends from all over the world to Gina’s family’s ranch in western Nebraska. The ranch hosted each part of the day in its pastures, out buildings, and classic red barn. No steer wrestling, but we all wrangled a pretty tough rain storm just at the start of the outdoor ceremony, that rushed everyone quickly into the barn for plan b. The good spirits of this group never faded, and the storm passed just in time for a beautiful sunset and full moon.

I think it’s ideal to have somewhat of a ‘soft’ plan for an engagement session. It’s great to connect with the couple and choose comfy settings that suit them well and offer diversity to the camera – but, beyond nailing down sites and timing – I favor letting the session unfold, and making the most of stumbling upon simple scenes throughout our time together. It leaves things to chance, and challenges me to stay in the moment and keep from producing re-peats. With that in mind, I would say that my time with Kristin and Jeff in the foothills of Morrison, Colorado could not have unfolded any better than it did! We had a sunny, winter day for starters – and our ‘stumbling’ lead us to a cozy wine cafe called Flights (stop by and say hi if you’re in Morrison – the owners were so lovely and welcoming!)

After a mosey through the streets of Morrison, we headed up the canyon to Lair O’ the Bear Park, where I got to meet ‘Champ’ – Kristin and Jeff’s happy, stick-loving labrador. What a day! Thank you, Kristin and Jeff!

Family and culture are by far my favorite aspects of the wedding day. Weddings are always candy stores for my eye- loaded with opportunity to photograph details, architecture, color, and texture. But I am truly a people person, and a family person above all – so when Julia and Andrey described their ideas for their J.W. Marriott wedding in Denver, Colorado, I couldn’t help but notice that what was most important to them were their loved ones. Their families coming together to celebrate was the utmost cherished part of the day for them – not the cake, or the flowers, or the attire (though they were all lovely, of course). Simply family. I knew we would be a great fit.

The Cherry Creek neighborhood set a diverse scene to include the handsome, modern touches Andrey favored in wedding photos, as well as the lovely tree-lined streets that Julia preferred. We had very few minutes set aside for some photographs of the newlyweds, and a little jaunt in a vintage Bentley served the bride and groom quite well – both as a quick getaway from the cocktail hour, and as a stunning background in photographs. We were all back to the reception in no time, under the care and beautiful event design of Stephanie Hinkle and staff at the J.W. Marriott. Stephanie recently requested some of my photography from Julia and Andrey’s wedding day for a published book to be featured in the hotel – can’t wait to see it!

Photographing weddings brings oodles of diversity into my life. “Don’t they all start to look the same after a while?,” quickly follows in conversation when someone learns of my profession. Nope. Rarely ever. Sure, there are parts of a wedding day that are routine, since it is usually a day of ceremony and celebration. And the adrenaline rush for me as a wedding photographer has sort of a pattern to it, I suppose. But I can sincerely say that no two weddings have ever felt the same.

I can also testify that, though I could probably tell you memories from every wedding I’ve documented over 10 years, there are weddings that will forever stand out in my mind; each for different reasons, of course. Amy Beth and Drennen’s Sanctuary wedding day fits that outstanding category for me. Their wedding was a balance of black tie elegance and mountain shin dig, conveyed flawlessly by the talented ladies of the Colorado Wedding Company. Amy Beth was so kind and lovely; Drennen was dapper and completely smitten for his bride – that alone may be what will forever stand out to me. Just the way he beamed around her put a lump in my throat many a time throughout the day.

Elegant. Sophisticated. Understated. Classic. Just a few words that came to mind behind my camera while photographing Anne & Edward’s wedding day. The architecture and simplicity of Good Shepherd Church in Cherry Creek is a photographer’s dream and is always at the top of my list when clients ask for church ideas in Denver. Pair the ceremony setting with a Denver Country Club reception (another favorite of mine) and you have one happy camera lady.

But this was a wedding day – and the best weddings (in my opinion) come with hitches. ‘Off without a hitch?’ Not so realistic in the wedding world. I’m kind of a fan of hitches – hitches are what keep things together, after all. Any guesses on what could possibly balance or, rather, hitch the grace of this cinema-worthy day? How about a TON of kiddos! Anne resides in New York but was raised in Colorado as the youngest of several siblings (all married) and is aunt to 8 nieces and nephews. I was first in awe of Anne’s timeless style that resonated throughout the day – but she won me over with her huge-hearted, curve ball decision to include all of those little ones in her wedding party.

Needless to say, the day was a sweet success. Below are some personal favorites.

Count those little noggins… Eight of them! They all eventually looked my way, but this is my favorite frame from our short photo time before the wedding.He couldn’t keep his eyes off of her through the entire ceremony.The full Catholic Mass ceremony allowed for me to quietly study the architecture of the church and produce a diverse collection of photographs. Back to Denver Country Club in time for a classic Colorado sunset. Perfecto!These two were a little sneaky with the whole cake-cutting idea, which I was a big fan of! They asked me to slip away with them and just document as they took a nibble together, no crowds or announcements, just a simple pause so they could get back on the dance floor.

I’m always grateful to connect with wonderful couples from across the map, and I feel especially lucky to know Lisa and Chad. They call Denver home (click here to view their Denver engagement session from a while back) and were married at Stonehouse Villa, outside of Austin – where Lisa is from. These two celebrated a simply elegant day amongst their nearest and dearest. They included Jewish traditions from Lisa’s heritage that were so interesting and touching to document, as well as some down-home, Texas BBQ – complete with bibs for every guest. I have a hunch you can just peek at the photographs below to get an idea of what a genuinely sweet couple they are.

Carly and Russell are newly engaged, and fairly new parents as well – to their sweet Lab pup, Ellie. Most people know that dogs are pretty huge in my book, so when these two wanted to bring Ellie along for their engagement session at Red Rocks Amphitheater, I was kind of giddy about the idea. Like kids, dogs bring a certain spontaneity to photo sessions (and life, in general) that keep everyone involved very much ‘in the moment’. That’s just one of the many things I love most about dogs. The four of us stayed in the moment and enjoyed the scenery; we had to give sweet Ellie a pit stop while Carly and Russell had some alone time for a few shots, but she was quite the sport. Later, we dropped the pup at home and wrapped the session at some of Carly and Russell’s favorite spots in downtown Denver. What a lovely summer evening!

Wedding season is in full swing and I am one grateful, busy photographer. I’ve been dotting the map already this year, meeting and photographing couples around Colorado and the West – always in awe of the ideas and details that clever brides and grooms incorporate into their wedding day. I love crafty brides. Especially when a crafty bride is as sweet and classic as Adriene. Martin is one lucky fella, and he couldn’t stop complimenting his bride on all the creativity and elbow grease she put into their wedding day details. Their story is a bit of a North meets South, with Adriene’s Canadian family and Martin’s Mississippi kin celebrating their day together. I got a kick out of the variety of accents that bounced off the walls of Denver’s Glenmoor Country Club all evening.

Their day began with a lovely ceremony at Bethany Lutheran Church – a beautiful setting, full of natural light and vibrant color. Adriene seemed to make sure there was a vibrant touch in all of the day’s details, creating a playful but elegant scene for the wedding. She happened to choose one of my favorite Denver florists, Emily Rodriguez of The Ruffly Rose (mosey down to her shop on South Pearl Street in Denver – it’s amazing!)

It was definitely a treat to photograph for Adriene and Martin. Here is a quick selection of my favorites:
One of my favorite touches Adriene included were these embroidered handkerchiefs she had made for each of her bridesmaids – a sweet memento I had yet to see at a wedding. The flowers from The Ruffly Rose were beautiful and incredibly fragrant the entire day. So great to photograph Emily Rodriguez’s fabulous work. An assuring look from Adriene’s sister, Lindsay – on the way to see Martin for the first time that day.I love the faces of the onlookers in this shot.Whenever a wind gust came through, Martin got a bit pummeled by the balloons. Such a good sport. I think you can tell a lot about a person by the way they hug. Sound bizarre? Stand back and watch the next time you have the opportunity. These two were very genuine huggers: firm squeezes, closed eyelids – a true connection with each guest that said hello.Every guest had a freshly-opened coke bottle with their name and table number flagged on the straw, and they were tempted by a lovely candy bar on the way to their seats. Most of them gave into the colorful treats on the way to dinner. I did too. See the bag on the right? I felt obligated to make one for the photo opportunity – then I shared it with the DJ :)

Man, I loved this wedding day. Keli and Hal absolutely wowed their photographer, so I can only imagine every one of their guests were blown away too! Their day began with preparation and portrait time at the one and only Hotel St. Cecilia in Austin – in perfect, eclectic charm and elegance. Keli and Hal saw each other for the first time in the courtyard of their private suite before exchanging vows at a beautiful evening ceremony at St. Mary’s Cathedral downtown. The celebration continued with what I’m pretty sure was one of the biggest parties I’ve ever seen – with hundreds of happy guests dining and dancing at Brazos Hall. Keli was one of the sweetest, most creative and beautiful of women I’ve ever worked with – and it was so clear to see how much Hal adored her.

Wedding days like Jordan and JP’s are the kind of wedding days I wish I could photograph every week. Their wedding was hosted at the Inn at Wild Rose Hall in the Texas Hill Country, and welcomed a fun crowd of much-loved guests, many who were visiting Texas for the first time. These two had a bit of long-distance adventure in their story and combined their homes and families of Texas and New York for what turned out to be an unforgettable gathering. There really wasn’t a part of the day that didn’t reflect how much these two adored each other, nor how much they were adored by everyone around them. They were married by a dear friend in a touching ceremony, and toasted with several endearing speeches at their reception – including one sent via video from a loved one who’s wife was soon to be in labor. Family and friends are a huge part of their lives and it was definitely felt through the entire day.

Julie and Brandon’s Vintage Villas wedding day was a lovely treat to photograph. The day began with the ladies’ preparation at a cozy, private home on Lake Travis – a perfect retreat for the bride and her dearest while they were pampered by the likes of the amazing make-up artist, Adrienne Pitkin. Something I loved about Julie was that she was a bride who could go from regal elegance to big-grinned goofiness in a heartbeat. Everything about her personality was so fun to photograph – it is no wonder at all why Brandon adores this woman. Whitney and Mark celebrated their wedding day in distinguished Austin style, with a classic ceremony at Central Christian Church followed by a reception at the Driskill Hotel. The two University of Texas grads included a creative tribute to their alma mater with quite a unique display for the groom’s cake: Crema Bakery & Cafe built a cake ball stadium, complete with a cake ball Bevo! It was a huge hit with the guests, as was the entire evening of dining and dancing. The night ended with a rose petal send-off as the newlyweds bid thanks and farewells via pedi-cab.

It seems that planning an engagement session is a lot like planning a date night, and inviting your photographer along for the evening. Slightly awkward, but tons of fun once we all find a balanced groove with our 3 wheels. Katie and Jace began our date night in Austin with some outdoor, unleashed time with their two dogs at Auditorium Shores. Once the ‘kids’ were shuttled home by a friend, we made our way to the famed graffiti wall in Clarksville for a little champagne celebration and alone time. After catching some lovely skyline views, we headed to one of their favorite spots on Rainey Street to end the session in the sunset light – and then I wished them a happy night and left them to the rest of the date on their own.

Engagement photography in Austin, Texas is especially fun in the Spring season. The weather is just about perfect before the summer heat sets in, and when the year’s rainfall has been generous enough, fields of wildflowers bloom vividly throughout the Hill Country, parading the famed state flower and local favorite: Texas Bluebonnets. This year is a wonderful year to see them in bloom, so when Laura and Josh requested a bluebonnet engagement session – I was giddy to find a great spot for us. They wanted to round out the session with other Austin favorites as well, so we bummed around South 1st Street a bit (amidst a little Spring rain storm) and found some classic live oaks to photograph with too. Their dog, Eloise, stole the show for a few of the photos and I love the outcome of the finished set; it definitely feels like Austin to me!

It is always such a joy to work with the sweetest of couples; couples like Megan and Chris. They celebrated their day in some lovely Austin wedding venues, starting with a ceremony at Shelton Chapel. The chapel fit their guests in a Goldilocks way (not too empty, not too full), which created a perfectly intimate gathering. I loved the way the guests standing in the balcony filled the background of the precessional; the aisle was a cozy width as well – which is a little detail I personally enjoy in chapels, because it pulls the guests and all of their reactions into the scene. These two were married by a minister who knew them well, and filled the sermon with sincerity. Once it was made official, they headed to party with their family and friends at the Austin Club! The classic venue hosted dinner, dancing and a rose petal farewell. Such a sweet day for such a sweet couple.

When I look back at my 12 years of photographing weddings, I realize that the wedding days that stay in the forefront of my mind are the ones that truly moved me. Kimberley and Tina’s wedding day at Red Corral Ranch did just that. They welcomed only their very dearest to celebrate in their exchange of vows and commenced their ceremony with a loving thanks to each of their three children – all who beamed with love of a family already, but were making it official that afternoon. It was the presence of family throughout the whole weekend that moved me most. Family who effortfully decorated the barn and created the ceremony site; family who gathered in loving support for the start of a new family; even Kim and Tina’s friends seemed more like family than good buds. The ties were strong in this crowd and it was an honor to photograph. I wish the depth of love that raised the barn roof that night for everyone on this planet.

Lauren and Oliver are planning a Texas wedding and chose Vail, Colorado for their engagement session. I was thrilled to accommodate them and met them in Vail Village on a sunny afternoon, just as skiers were ending their day. We dotted through the village a bit and hiked our way down through snow banks on the creek to catch a change of scenery along the water. These two were great sports, keeping warm in their coats for some photo opportunities, and thinking the warmest of thoughts without their coats for others. Lauren and Oliver are both coffee fans, and wanted to wrap the session warming up with a cup in Vail Square.

Cheree and Mark just happened to choose a comfy, not-quite-Spring-but-so-darn-close kind of day in Denver for their engagement session. The sun kept us warm for some photo opps, but these two kept scarves and coats nearby for the shaded spots – which I think ended up producing a lovely, diverse set of photographs. They chose the Platte Park neighborhood to meet in, so we bounced in and out of the fun scenes that Pearl Street Denver has to offer (including some sweet treats at Pajama Baking Company!), and then wrapped the session near the Flagship REI in Confluence Park.

Hayley and Jorge wanted to head back to the grounds of their alma mater to kick off their engagement session, so we met at the CU campus in Boulder on a classic Colorado afternoon. The skies were blue and the sun was kind to us, though we got a bit chilly at times – perfect weather for these two to cuddle up in. We made our way around campus, playing in all the types of sunlight the day brought us – and then headed out to the Flatirons at Chautauqua Park to wrap the shoot with a classy mountain feel.

Just go straight to the photographs; don’t bother reading about how Kayleigh and Dave’s wedding day had a simple authenticity that completely won over every guest, as well as every wedding vendor behind the scenes. Kayleigh and Dave did it their way – and every minute was a treat to photograph. Just before their quiet, pre-wedding portrait time at Hotel San Jose, I asked Kayleigh if she had a bouquet to bring with her. Her reply was a huge smile and a big “Nope!” :) They walked themselves together, down the aisle to begin their ceremony at Mercury Hall, and spoiled their guests with creative finger foods throughout the night – making the entire evening a comfy cocktail party. Tunes were in line, a la Joel from Greenbelt DJ, and the dance floor stayed hopping all night!

Remember the sweet early-bird couple? (see their engagement session here) Kristina and Greg celebrated their wedding day exchanging vows at the chapel at Red Corral Ranch, followed by a brunch reception at the venue’s classic red barn. Red Corral Ranch is quickly becoming one of my favorite spots on the planet. I could easily set up permanent camp and be forever smiling amongst the limestone cabins and serenity of the ranch grounds – it has my personal recommendation as a wedding venue, family gathering, or solo getaway. Kristina and Greg’s morning wedding incorporated family, friends, hay rides, uno games, and horseshoes – all good stuff to kick off a Saturday with a big grin. The newlyweds quickly set out along their way by exiting the intimate shin dig through a sea of bubbles. What a treat to photograph!

Austin never ceases to inspire with its diversity of scenes to photograph, nor has it ceased to connect me with some truly great couples. Meet Gray and Mike, soon-to-be newlyweds who enjoy a laid back Austin lifestyle – and made my job of third-wheeling through downtown amidst their sweet canoodles (aka: photographing their engagement session) quite a hoot! We kept the plan light, and made our way to one of their favorite spots (and now one of mine!), The Easy Tiger Bake Shop and Beer Garden. The friendly staff welcomed my discreet shuttering while Gray and Mike enjoyed some spirits as a little celebration of the day (and, a little happy hour does wonders for even the slightest of on-camera nerves ;) We made our way through downtown a bit and wrapped the session on the shore of Town Lake, just in time for sunset. Perfecto!

Meet Katie and Nick. They wanted an urban setting for their engagement shoot, so the 3 of us headed into downtown Denver to photograph for a bit with plans to wrap at dusk under the lights in Larimer Square. We ended up with some amazing scenes. I drove the few blocks from my home in the Denver Highlands (riding my bike with my camera gear makes me crazy nervous) and found THE best parking spot ever – right in the exact spot we had planned to meet – only to realize that I had forgotten my wallet. My car is usually spotless, but I searched for loose change anyways – no luck. I happen to have a resolution set for the year to not earn any parking tickets (yes, I usually earn them- a bad habit to break.) I had stayed true to that goal for all the days of the year so far. Up walks Katie and Nick – looking adorable and so excited for our session. I was laughing at myself as I explained the scenario, and Nick kindly filled my parking meter to the max. Lifesaver! I sent Nick and Katie a complimentary enlargement from our session in thanks for saving me from a ticket.

Thanks again for the meter help, guys – and for such a fun time together. I love the results and hope that you do too!

Elise and Hunter braved a chilly winter day for what turned out to be a beautiful Round Rock engagement session. I’m honored to be photographing their wedding next winter, and I had such a great time getting to know them both and witnessing their sweet interactions as we made our way through the Old Settler’s Association of Williamson County – which is very much a walkable museum nestled in a serene park setting, with historical cabins and barns tucked throughout. We had the whole place to ourselves, and I love the results! They even wanted to end the session showing off some of their swing dancing after the sun had set.

Addie and Gary celebrated their wedding day with a touching ceremony at the Smith Family Chapel, followed by a distinguished reception at the Austin Country Club. Their loved ones filled the house at both venues and enjoyed all of the details, dinner and dancing the day had in store. Greenbelt DJ was on hand with their partying expertise, along with a cigar craftsman who catered to guests during dance floor breaks – so the energetic ambiance was no surprise at all! I personally loved seeing how uncontrollably excited Addie was to marry her groom, and how genuinely happy Gary was throughout the entire day. They even had a classic hot rod to swoop them off once the party ended.

I had the lovely honor of working with Ashley and Sean at the Hoffman Haus in Fredericksburg, Texas this fall. I have to be honest, when I arrived the morning of the wedding day – a big part of me wanted to pose as a bridesmaid, just so I could lounge around in the beautifully crafted suites and drink champagne with the ladies. Partly because the Hoffman Haus is such a serene bed and breakfast- the kind of place that instantly brings upon a relaxing, deep breath when you arrive. But also because Ashley’s bridesmaids were some truly great women – which is no surprise, based on how amazing Ashley is. This beautiful bride has lived the majority of her life undergoing leg bone re-structuring, and proudly donned a brace beneath her dress. You would never know it by her grace, warm smile, and killer dance moves! I loved how Sean and Ashley’s family played such big roles in their day: Sean’s dad was his best man, Ashley’s father sang a solo to the couple during the ceremony, and their little niece was a show stopper the entire event.

Vista West Ranch in the Texas Hill Country is the perfect host for a chic, rustic wedding day – and it was a beautiful setting for Claire, Steven, and their guests. I have had the pleasure of knowing Claire since she reserved me last year, and seeing her vision come to life after a year of creative ideas unfolding was a huge treat! The ceremony aisle was lined on each side with groupings of succulent plants, housed in unique settings – from terrariums, to planters, to wheel barrows. The vintage details amidst the wooden chairs for guests made such a lovely, organic welcome. Claire and Steven included a potted tree in their ceremony, and each of their parents added soil for a touching tribute. It was obvious that family meant the world to these two, and it was an honor (and a hoot!) to be amidst such a fun loving crowd for the weekend.

Did you know that North by Northwest in Northwest Austin is a wedding venue? Neither did I! Not until I met Shannon and Matt earlier this year, a craft beer-loving couple who told me about their plans to host a VIP-only wedding day in the patio Beer Garden of NXNW. It was a welcoming setting, perfect for the Texas simplicity they imagined for their day. Nothing seemed to ever stress the sweetness between these two, as they kept the day casual while the microbrew drafts on tap flowed for guests. Family, friends, and tons of cute kiddos (my favorite show-stealer being Matt’s daughter) kept the story-telling strong throughout the night.

Wedding photography takes me to new places constantly. Each wedding venue I step into has a different story, but rarely are they as inspirational as the story behind CTC Garden in Austin, TX. CTC International, (which means Comfort The Children) is a non-profit organization that helps communities in Kenya build and manage sustainable economies that help them with everyday challenges. It was started after founder Zane Wilemon befriended local pastor Jeremiah Kuria while visiting the town of Maai Mahiu in Africa. The primary focus of CTC is based around 5 areas: education, environment, economy, health and community. CTC employs over 60 local Kenyans and serves the 60,000 citizens in Maai Mahiu.

CTC Garden offers a very unique experience for couples with a bright, rustic courtyard wedding ceremony and reception space. The venue is lush with vegetation, houses a large deck for ceremonies, and an open air garage for dancing. Catherine and Lech brought their own unique touches to the day by hosting an intimate ceremony officiated by all 4 of their parents – something I’d never seen before. Their nearest and dearest from all over the world celebrated long into the night, with dancing, jenga wishes, and even some impromptu haiku! I had a blast.

I’d say the fall season is a lovely time to celebrate a Texas Longhorn themed wedding. The signature burnt orange UT color fits the autumn palette to perfection, and football season builds the spirit within every Longhorn and Longhorn at heart. Kaitie and Seth conveyed their alma mater loyalty by celebrating their wedding day in downtown Austin with an intimate ceremony at St. Austin Catholic Church followed with a vibrant reception at the UT Alumni Center. Their sweet, southern hospitality treated guests to a clever candy bar (all candies in orange, of course) and lucky horseshoes for keepsakes. This Texas-spirited bunch boot-scooted into the night and even Seth’s grandmother was proud to “hook ’em horns” as the UT fight song was chanted to end the evening.

There is something uniquely special about weddings held at home. I think it’s the authenticity. Weddings are such milestone gatherings, and it seems that the home weddings I have photographed over the years have a way of getting to the heart of the matter by forgoing extra unnecessaries in order to host every cherished guest. While I love documenting all kinds of wedding days, I am a sucker for the intimacy of a wedding day that says “welcome to our home”. Maryellen and Jason welcomed their guests from near and far to the Texas Hill Country for an intimate ceremony at St. Catherine of Siena, followed by a sunshine-filled, back yard reception in their home. Kids ditched their church clothes for shorts and tees, and the whole gang ditched their shoes to dance away the evening on the living room floor.

The University of Texas campus in Austin is an architectural treat. I’ve had the opportunity to photograph amidst its lovely layout a handful of times for weddings and portrait sessions, so when Kristina and Greg brainstormed some UT ideas for their engagement photos – I knew it would be a fun, diverse session. These two love birds happen to also be early birds; they’re planning a morning wedding in the Texas Hill Country that I am so excited to photograph this winter. And, in early bird fashion, they requested a sunrise engagement session that kicked off our time with beautiful bursting light. I loved every little scene we came upon, and the sweet interaction between these two kept me grinning all morning.

We began around happy hour time in Clarksville, where the owners of restaurants Jeffrey’s and the Josephine House welcomed us so generously – even providing these two with a complimentary cocktail in congratulations – such awesome hospitality. We made our way to the exceptionally serene grounds of the Hotel San Jose, where I think I may have captured my favorite engagement photo of the year thus far (take a peek below to find Cameron and Keisha on a hidden little staircase). It seemed every spot we happened upon that day was perfectly lit and full of color and texture. These two were so sweet and fun – I can’t wait for their big day to come!

Stonehouse Villa is quickly becoming a quaint favorite amongst Texas Hill Country wedding venues, and it’s pretty easy to see why. It’s clever and accommodating owners house their interior design business from the venue by day and welcome weddings and events throughout the week. Which means this beautifully restored 1923 limestone villa is always in caring attention, and always looking its best – wrapped in understated luxury, with old world Texas charm and textures. Jessi and Tony couldn’t have found a better spot to host their intimate wedding day. These two brought together their very closest to celebrate with – and after solid days of rain in central Texas, the clouds cleared just in time for their beautiful event. They were married at sunset by Jessi’s brother, under a canopy of signature, twisty Hill Country oak trees.

Mercury Hall in Austin, Texas knows how to host a wedding. It’s often tough for a couple to decide between planning a wedding within the vibrant city-limits of Austin, or in the serenity of the Texas Hill Country. Mercury Hall really is the best of both worlds. The venue is a stone’s throw from downtown; it’s wrapped in oak trees, paved with limestone, and houses a restored 1904 church that can charm any ceremony or dance hall ideas. Guests can linger into the garden patio, and take their own private strolls around the property for a quiet break from the dance floor if they wish.

I felt lucky to photograph the hilltop setting for Eva and Matt’s wedding day. Eva’s touches were a perfect balance of elegance and simplicity. These two were adamant about not drawing attention to themselves on their very own wedding day; rather, celebrating the gathering of loved ones was their highest priority. They brought together two loving, rooted families who all packed the house to party!

It’s almost becoming a norm to somehow connect with couples who connect with both Texas and Colorado – it happens often in my travels between Denver and Austin as a wedding photographer. Ashley and Freddy just moved back to Texas from downtown Denver, and fancied downtown Austin for their engagement photography scene. They reserved the lawn of the Four Seasons Hotel, and a day of rain clouds parted just in time for our session – leaving us some pretty amazing sunset light. The tropical, lush setting gave us great composition and color, and the shore of Town Lake added such a serene touch. Thank you both for such a fun session. Here are some personal favorites:

It’s no wonder why the Beaver Creek Wedding Chapel is such a sought after wedding venue in Colorado. Stepping onto the grounds can easily day-dream one into a European alpine setting. It’s stone facade sits quietly, yet majestically, tucked into layers of evergreens and aspens – and reaches out magnetically to almost every passer by. (It’s true, most weddings I have photographed at the Beaver Creek Chapel have involved someone standing guard to shoo away tourists. it is magnetic, I tell ya!) I’ve photographed the Beaver Creek Chapel in sun and snowfall, but McCall and Brannon’s wedding day was the first time I saw this setting in an evening rain. The weather created warm, intimate light inside the church, and allowed the darker details of the trees to show through the windows. That combination is a rare treat! Who says rain on a wedding day is bad news? Not this photographer. And certainly not this couple.

McCall and Brannon’s numero uno task was to celebrate their wedding vows amongst the ones they love the most. Beaver Creek was a destination wedding for this couple, so it was clear that the guests who surrounded them were the best-of-the best in their lives. McCall could sincerely be the most giggly, easy-natured bride I have ever worked with. Her smile was contagious! And it was obvious immediately that she had tons to smile about. Her life with Brannon included their beautiful baby daughter – and this day was a celebration of family. The love and support of this newly-wed trio resonated throughout the weekend. I’ve heard ‘it takes a village’ and – my, what a loving village these three had surrounding them.

And, I must toot a horn here. In the 10+ years I have photographed weddings throughout Colorado, I have never come across a wedding coordinator so lovely, organized, experienced, and fun than the amazing JoAnn from Mountains and Meadows. JoAnn and her staff were exceptional!

Of all the types of weddings to photograph, I have to say I genuinely love photographing a classic wedding day. That is just what Elizabeth & Mike had planned for their downtown Austin wedding at the Driskill Hotel and Central Christian Church – two wedding venues that beam with distinguished ambience. Their ceremony was wrapped in warm ambient light and beautiful architecture of the church; every wooden pew was filled with loved ones.

The Driskill was the perfect setting to celebrate this classy couple. The mezzanine level hosted an elegant dinner service while surrounding ballrooms offered guests cozy spots to mingle. And once the partying kicked off, there was barely a soul in their chair for the rest of the night! Thank you Elizabeth & Mike for such a lovely wedding day. Here are just a few of my favorites:

Lindsey and Taylor recently invited me home to eastern Colorado to photograph their wedding day amongst family and friends in the tiny town of Calhan – where Lindsey was born and raised, as were her parents, and her grandparents. It felt as thought the entire town gathered in Lindsey’s parents’ backyard to see these two high school sweethearts marry. Even the thunderstorm that hugged the scene closely all day couldn’t scare away this crowd. Even in the midst of hundreds of guests – I would still call this wedding day one of the most intimate I’ve documented.

Every detail was so sweet and simple – yet plentiful; and every single guest had a huge smile and hug to share with the bride and groom. Games and storytelling, burritos from Chipotle, red velvet cake, and a homemade dance floor kept everyone celebrating long into the night. This was the kind of wedding day I could photograph every day of the week! Thank you, Lindsey and Taylor, for welcoming me into your home.

Texas Hill Country wedding venues can’t possibly get more unique than Star Hill Ranch. Imagine an old west movie set, complete with saloons, dance halls, charming cottages, and a wedding chapel that would make Martha Stewart swoon. Add a Texas sunset to the scene, and you have a pretty unforgettable setting for a wedding day. Star Hill Ranch is a Texas venue that can easily adapt to a rustic chic wedding, a horse-drawn carriage wedding, a cowboy-boots-required wedding – and I would say it was the perfect host for the bluegrass, homespun wedding touches added by Kelly, John, and their friends and family.

Kelly and John celebrated their wedding at Star Hill Ranch surrounded by immense love and support from a huge community of family and friends. The outdoor dinner service filled the main street of the town setting making a truly unforgettable night scene. I’m pretty sure that each of the dozens of desserts to choose from were all homemade, donated by loved-ones. And when it came time to dance and party, the roof was certainly RAISED! :)

My camera has seen dozens of engagement sessions throughout Colorado and Texas this summer, so it’s always tough to pick ones to feature here. Sharing these stories during the peak of Colorado wedding season has been a challenge, too – definitely working on that one.

I think Jie (pronounced ‘jay’) and Ryan’s session grabs me immediately because of the vibrant colors and diversity we stumbled upon in Boulder. I guess it’s kinda hard not to stumble upon vibrance and abundance in a Boulder engagement session, but everywhere we ended up that day just seemed to fit perfectly for us. Bonus: Jie and Ryan are new to Colorado and had not explored Boulder yet, so it was a treat for me to show them some favorite spots. We danced (Jie with Ryan, me with my camera) to some live music on Pearl Street, checked out the Boulder Theater and soaked up the town a bit before heading to the Flatirons for a little hiking and picnic time. These two will enjoy being Coloradoans – I love their happy-go-lucky, adventurous spirits and they were so sweet and comfy together, I can hardly wait for their Chatfield Botanical Gardens wedding this fall.

Lots of Colorado wedding couples invite me to Boulder for their engagement photo scene and I love that it challenges me to see the area in a new way each time. Here are some favorites from what I saw with Jie and Ryan:

Must love Texas. Must love Colorado. Must love dogs. That’s all I require from my clients when I photograph their wedding day and engagement session. Teasing, of course – but there is some sort of happy trifecta that those three ingredients bring to my client relationships these days. I’m referring mostly to the Texas and Colorado parts (dogs are icing on the cake, naturally – because if you love dogs, then you are automatically awesome in my book); it seems that there is often a strong connection between Texas and Colorado for many of the wedding clients I cross paths with lately. As soon as Texans learn I’m from Colorado, eyes light up and conversation turns to skiing, snow, mountains (because Texans love Colorado) – and when Colorado folks learn that the Austin area is my second home, they almost applaud with the same admiration – and hand me a list of places to eat and hike and cycle (because, see – Coloradoans love Texas, too). Couples hunting for a wedding photographer to accommodate both places have even come across my name (needing engagement photos in Austin and wedding photos in Colorado – perfecto!). I couldn’t be more thrilled or grateful to bounce between both states with my cameras.

Speaking of awesome couples who love Texas and Colorado and dogs – meet Laney and Aaron: Austinites who ski in Colorado and have two of the sweetest pups ever. Austin has so many fun places for engagement photography that we had a hard time narrowing down our plan for the evening, but Laney and Aaron chose to hit the streets near South Congress and then head home to walk the pooches, which gave a lovely balance to our photo set. Casual, colorful funk and down-home family time is how I might describe it. Laney and Aaron were a blast to work with, always goofy and cracking up together – and I wanted to high-five them for how sweet and well-mannered their doggies were.

While my weekends are filled with photographing weddings, my weekdays are generally packed with engagement sessions. I suppose you could say I’m a professional third wheel Monday through Friday, always hanging out with couples in love, hunting sweet little scenes for engagement photos. Just me and the bride and groom to be. They’re smooching and I’m clicking. No complaints here, though! The engagement session is a great time for all 3 of us and I always leave these photo opportunities knowing more about each couple and how they interact – perfect info to stash away for the wedding day. Laura and Josh chose Chautauqua Park in Boulder, Colorado to kick off our third wheel session, and we wrapped the shoot at Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall. Perfect choices for a sunny Colorado day. I’m personally a huge fan of Chautauqua Park – I always feel like I’m on the set of Dirty Dancing when I’m there, with the blend of cabins and the grand dining hall. We bopped around the cabin porches, danced in front of the Flatiron Mountains, and then headed to Pearl Street Mall for a change of scenery. Laura and Josh were so fun to work with and I am really looking forward to photographing their July wedding at Hudson Gardens in Denver. As I go along photographing and sharing stories of current weddings, I’ve been noodling to come up with a way to feature wedding photography of past clients – and I think a flashback category suits the idea perfectly. Word-of-mouth has been the number one building block of my photography’s growth and success and I think this category will give me an opportunity to thank the brides and grooms who have tooted my horn along the way. It will also help illustrate how so many of my clients are connected, and how powerful word-of-mouth in the wedding world truly is. It will take a bit for the stories to start connecting the dots, but I’m hoping these little wedding photography flashbacks will do a fine job of portraying some wonderful couples throughout the years, and show how wonderful couples often tend to know other wonderful couples – and how grateful I am to end up in the mix.

Say hello to Brittany and Jack. When I think back to their Colorado wedding day, celebrated at the Chapel at Cherry Hills Community Church and Arrowhead Golf Club in 2010 – tons of details are still vivid in my mind. The Beatles music playing in the chapel, a la strings and piano (Jack is from the UK and the music was a perfect tribute); I remember how sweet and lovely both families and the entire wedding party were – even details of speeches that still put a lump in my throat (like Jack’s reaction when he first spotted Brittany on the Texas Christian University campus, in sweats and a pony tail I believe).

I’m certain Jack is over 6 feet tall, and I would say Brit is about 5-foot-perfect, and together they stand out as one of my all time favorite couples. I recently saw them at Amy Beth and Drennen’s Sanctuary wedding, which is dandy timing in launching this flashback idea (stay tuned for photos of these two on that wedding’s dance floor). Thanks Jack and Brit, for the wonderful opportunity, and the continued referrals. Here is a little flashback to your beautiful day:

Between engagement photography and wedding day photography, a Colorado couple has the opportunity to find themselves in some of the best locales the state has to offer. Amy Beth and Drennen wanted photographs that show off their love for each other and their love for Colorado. Lucky me! I knew from our first emails that a wedding at the Sanctuary was in the plans, but it wasn’t until a few months after we’d met that the engagement shoot ideas started to unfold. Wanna head to Vail for a spring engagement session? Yep! Yep, I do. And so we did.

We brainstormed an idea of getting dolled up for a casual but classy set of photographs throughout Vail Village, followed by a change of clothes for a cozy mountain feel. We wrapped that plan up in some prayers for good weather, and were on our way.

The afternoon was perfect, and it’s a treat to look back at these engagement photos today because I actually just photographed Amy Beth and Drennen’s Sanctuary wedding last weekend. Stay tuned for all the beautiful wedding details, but for now- I’ll include some favorites from the engagement session and close this post with a teaser photo from their wedding day. I consider myself a very lucky wedding photographer to be able to call both Colorado and the Austin, Texas Hill Country ‘home’. My wedding year balances perfectly photographing rocky mountain weddings in the summer and fall, and Texas weddings through the fall, winter, and spring (with some Colorado winter weddings and Texas summer weddings tossed in the mix, of course). The best part of my profession is the opportunity it brings me to work with wonderful people, and I find my clientele in Colorado and Texas share a quality of sincerity that keeps a grateful spring in my step. I often travel outside of my ‘homes’ for work as well, but I feel it’s pretty tough to beat either a Texas or Colorado wedding. It’s the people, if you ask me.

People like Meredith and Toby, who were wed at the fantastic Old Glory Ranch in Wimberley, Texas. They have a Colorado and Texas tie in their story: Meredith was born and raised in Texas, Toby in Colorado… Meredith’s career path eventually brought her to Colorado – but by that time, Toby was along his military pilot path living in Florida. It wasn’t until they were matched, states apart, on eHarmony that they realized all the parallels their lives shared (they had even attended the same private college on the east coast). Fate, I tell ya. And eHarmony needs to scoop these two up to promote their website – they are quite an incredible pair.

Thank you, Meredith, for bringing me home to Texas to photograph such an amazing day with you and Toby and your friends and family from all over the map.
