Travel to Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh had been on my mind since few years. But it only materialized in June this year. I only had a vague idea that Spiti valley is similar to Ladakh, but perhaps a little less known than its more famous counterpart. I just jumped in and booked my travel with Spiti Valley Tours, without much research, and also well in advance (almost 4 months in advance!). The journey took us through some of the most stunning landscapes I have come across, while cruising through Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti districts of Himachal Pradesh.

There are 2 ways to reach Spiti valley. One from Manali and another from Shimla. The main town in Spiti valley is Kaza. Manali – Kaza is a shorter route, but gains altitude more drastically than the other leisurely route from Shimla. Our plan had us going via Shimla and coming back via Manali.

Kinnaur and Spiti are in total contrast to each other. Kinnaur is more rain soaked and draped in greenery whereas Spiti is barren and dry.

This is first part of a two-part story of my journey through Himachal Pradesh. Its a longish post – so, grab a cup of coffee/tea and come with me on this epic journey – through Kinnaur district.

Chandigarh to Narkanda

Our journey started in Chandigarh. We were met by a very genial person, who would drive and accompany us over the next week or so – Munish. Our first day’s goal was to reach a town called Narkanda, which is typically 6 hours of travel from Chandigarh. We would learn a whole lot of things that day, including the basic fact that travel times can change drastically!

It was a Saturday morning, that we started from Chandigarh airport. Munish informed that the journey is going to take longer than 6 hours – how much longer, was an unknown yet. Right from the start of the journey, we could see 2 of the 4 lanes of the highway connecting Chandigarh and Shimla were closed in many places. We witnessed bounders and stones of an assortment of sizes, which had made their way down from the hill slopes and onto the roads – result of a heavy and torrential rain for 3-4 hours overnight. The traffic was also quite high – a typical weekend rush, Munish informed, of Shimla-bound crowd. With this, we silently took a deviation to skip Shimla altogether, by going through smaller but more beautiful peaceful Chail-Kufri road. After a sumptuous lunch at an unassuming dhaba near Chail, we rejoined the main highway somewhere after Shimla.

Munish had already received word from his network of friends, of possible road closure ahead. And so it was. A 6-8 KM section of highway between Shimla and Theog was closed for vehicular traffic and small vehicles (cars and two wheelers) were rerouted. This alternate route involved a steep downhill section and then a steep uphill section. Roads were narrow and bad in patches. Clearly they were not designed to cater to this much traffic, so we ended up having mini traffic jams at multiple places. Though was only 20KM more than the original route, it took us almost 2.5 hours to cover this stretch! After rejoining the main highway, we stopped for a much needed tea break. All this meant that we reached Narkanda pretty late in the evening.

Narkanda

Still in the Shimla district, this little town is famous as a skiing destination in winters.It boasts of oh-so-pretty visuals of hill slopes draped in pine trees and a sprinkling of apple orchards in several places. We had reached just around sunset time and fortunately, our hotel had a nice vantage to the said views! I chose to put my camera to work (for the first time on this trip), even before checking into our hotel room.

Night turned colder – a sign of things to come. We spent most of the time by the bonfire and were ready to retire for the day after a hot meal. The next morning started out gloomy and soon enough, it began to rain. This was the only image I managed before the rains. We had a light breakfast as per Munish’s instructions, because he had promised something special for our taste buds later in the day.

Narkanda to Sangla

We started while the rains continued to pound down at Narkanda. Thankfully, the intensity of the rain gradually decreased and stopped about an hour into the journey. We were in the company of Sutlej river and started following it upstream. Roads were thankfully good with only a few occasional bad patches. We stopped at a road side dhaba, which had really nice views of the hills beyond the valley in which Sutlej was roaring. True to his promise, we ended up relishing the most delectable Makki ki roti with Sarson ka saag with a generous amount of butter. It was a welcome break from the journey, a treat to our tummies and a sight to behold for our eyes!

Entering Kinnaur

Soon after lunch, we entered Kinnaur district. We had to stop at a check post and fill out details. Apparently, this is to keep track of people entering the district so that people can be traced and contacted in the event of any natural disaster. We are probably used to hill roads having a slopes on either side. But in Kinnaur (and Himachal in general), hill sides are perpendicular to the road and at places, the rocky hills are cut in a way to form a roof over the road! Situated in such a stretch of road is the Taranda Maa temple. It is believed that Taranda Devi protects people travelling on this road, and as such, forms a default stop to offer prayers here before proceeding.

This road continues till Karcham, where we deviate towards Sangla. Otherwise, the road continues towards Tabo. From here, we follow a tributary of Sutlej, called Baspa. As if the roads so far were not challenging enough, the road from Karcham to Sangla is even more precarious. If two big vehicles come from opposite directions, one of them would have to start going reverse till one of the few points where the road is a little bit wider. A recipe for sweaty palms, tingling backs and elevated heart rate.

Sangla/Batseri

Sangla is the main village in the valley formed by Baspa river. Our stay was a little beyond Sangla, near a village called Batseri. All the difficulties on the challenging and dangerous roads is completely forgotten once you get a glimpse of the mesmerizing beauty of this lovely valley. At places, you can reach the riverside and just sit in peace. Go across the river over one of the several foot bridges in the area, and you can stroll up and down such gems of Himachali villages of the valley. We hiked up to the Batseri village on the other side of river and it looked like we had gone back in time. The mighty hills are ever present entities all around us – the silence of the valley is only disturbed by the roar of the river, the howl of the winds and calls of birds. Its like a life right out of a fairy tale. While things look rosy for us tourists, the local life can be hard. Remote location, need to travel long distances, often by foot, extreme weather conditions and yet, the genuineness and warmth of the locals is something you cannot miss. These mountain folks are just built differently. It was during our time here that news of heavy rains wreaking havoc in Shimla, Manali were going around nationwide. Several of us got calls from back home inquiring about our safety. For the local people, this was a regular day and they experience this type of situation several times a year. Fortunately, we were blessed with kind weather – not just here, but through out our trip. I could go on and on about Sangla, but I’ll stop here and let some images talk for themselves. All in all, Sangla is a place one should NOT miss!

Sangla – Kalpa

Our journey from Sangla to Kalpa had a few back and forths. We first headed towards Chitkul, made a stop at Rakchham and then proceed to Kalpa.

Chitkul is dubbed India’s last village. This is debatable. Munish also agreed there are more villages down the same road further. It used to be the last inhabited village along this region and that kind of became a phrase that stuck on. It is a quaint, small village that could offer a meaningful peek into life of the villagers. But sadly, it is thronged by noisy crowds who are only interested in a photo op with the board proclaiming it as “India’s last village” (not the one shown below – this was some distance before the village). The village itself can be explored on foot. The route between Chitkul and Rakchham is very beautiful. We can find several mountain streams gushing down the slopes and adding to the volume of Baspa. We cross several such streams right beside the road along this route. Here are a few images.

Kalpa – heart of Kinnaur

Again passing through Sangla, we make a quick lunch stop and then proceed to Kalpa. Kalpa is a small village in the Sutlej valley with excellent views of the snow capped Kinner Kailash mountain ranges. Among the mountain skyline, the Kinner Kailash shivling is easily visible on a clear day. This is a place of great religious belief for the local people and September sees 2-3 days journey on foot that locals undertake to offer pooja at the sacred site situated at an altitude of over 19000 ft. The place we stayed at Kalpa had lovely views of the Kinner Kailash range and clouds offered some dramatic scenes that evening.

Kalpa – Tabo

In today’s journey, we slowly start transitioning from typical Kinnaur landscapes to Spiti landscapes. The surroundings start to turn more and more dry, and we start seeing the typical deep blue skies dotted with cotton ball clouds. We are still following Sutlej river, but we encounter the confluence of Sutlej and Spiti rivers at Khab. The confluence of two rivers show slightly different shades of brown, but there was not much to differentiate the two rivers apart from the directions they were coming in from. At this point, we bid goodbye to Sutlej and start following Spiti river, which will lead us into Spiti valley. Before we enter Spiti, we make a stop at the last location in Kinnaur district.

Nako

Nako is a village close to the border with Tibet. Situated at an altitude of 11800 ft, Nako village consists of a houses clumped together with narrow and labyrinthine alleys running in between. A prominent place in the village is a man made lake considered sacred by locals. On the day we visited, the lake sparkled in a deep shade of emerald green and looked stunning with a deep blue sky in the backdrop. The houses are made of mud/clay and optionally a layer of stones outside. This helps regulate temperature, especially crucial in the cold winters that the region endures each year.

After Nako, we continue our journey towards Tabo. Soon, we formally enter Lahaul and Spiti district at Sumdo. Again, a checkpost collects all traveller details before letting us continue. The landscape and changes therein, have already shown us what to expect over the next few days we were to spend in the Spiti valley. Its difficult to imagine the scale of monumentally awesome landscapes we were still to encounter. Kinnaur hosts some of the most beautiful places in Himachal Pradesh. And I cannot wait to go back and explore more of this area, hopefully in the near future. Watch this space for the next part of our journey through Spiti valley!

An ancient temple located on top of a hill provides a nice bird’s eye view of Hosur town. The “Chandra Choodeshwara temple“, said to be of 13th centure, is located atop a gentle hill. The temple itself, I could not explore much, given the COVID-19 pandemic situation in 2020 and the crowds present. But the hill provided a nice view of the town below.

The expanse, the close cluster of buildings, umpteen number of cellphone towers, lights and the smog (being close to the national highway) – these clearly stand out in these views.

Ever since I found the exquisite Hoysala temple at Doddagaddavalli in 2015, I have went back to this place multiple times over the years. The most recent visit was a family outing last year.

My mother, her sisters and their families were all in attendance. And, not so surprisingly, no one had even heard of this temple. It took some convincing to get them off the beaten temple track of Belur and Halebid, but it was worth it. In the end, I guess I kind of earned the merit that I won’t have to convince them of such place ever again – they will blindly follow me

We visited on a late evening and the temple priest was ever so kind to show the ladies around and narrate stories about the temple. I roamed around the temple with my new camera (at that time) and landed what has become one of my most beloved image in recent times.

For no good reason, I had held on to this image without posting it anywhere. The pandemic hit us and among other things on my personal front, I seem to have retreated into a virtual shell. I have been posting old images on and off on social media. But, I had held on to this one image. I think its only fair that I post this first on my website than on social media.

Regular readers here will be aware that I’m a landscape photographer – check out my landscape image showcase. In this post, I thought I’ll take the example of a recent landscape shoot outing we had and take you through what typically happens on such outings.

For a landscape shoot, we typically shoot early in the morning or late into the evening – see why. In this example, we were shooting sunset at the location of a waterfall. 4-5 people traveling with gear meant we were taking car(s). We started 4-5 hours before actual sunset – this is typical too. Depending on the distance of the location, we need to plan our start time so that we reach the location at least an hour or two before sunset. Why so much time earlier? Read on…

The location itself might not be on a “map” – in such cases, we have to rely on local people for directions. In this particular case, we were delayed by 10-15 minutes because we went in the wrong direction. When traveling by car, we have to figure out where to park the car. Sometimes its easy, sometimes, not so much. See below – can you spot our cars?

We may have to walk a considerable distance to reach the actual location, because a car cannot go everywhere. Again, a bit of direction seeking from locals, if available. Else rely on Google (offline) maps, satellite views for help. Its good to have offline maps handy, because some places may not have (good) cell coverage. Here’s us walking through a village and at the edge of a paddy field to get to the location.

Once at the location itself, we tend to move around, trying to find good spots to shoot from and good compositions to frame. The location may be a vast open space where a lot of ground needs to be covered to unearth nice frames, or it can be a small confined space. In this case, it was the latter.

After all this, each of us set out to do our own thing. Some flew drones, some started setting up rigs for timelapses, etc.

Here at this location, I chose to be a little foolish/brave. I crossed the stream seen above – though it was shallow, it was a little slippery. Had to do multiple trips back and forth to get my camera, bag, tripod one by one across this stream. In the end, while getting all my stuff back, I slipped and had a fall – slight bruises, wet clothes, wet camera bag, the camera in my hand saved by the L-bracket – it was a hairy few moments before I could ascertain both me and the gear were all ok. For all this, I have just this one image to show – and this is typical too! Mostly, we manage to come out with one or at most, a couple of images from each such shoot.

Not to forget, after all this, we have to make our way back to the parked car in darkness, and drive back in our exhausted states as well.

As I mentioned in my previous post, Sandur, as a place, is bit of a surprise. On the otherwise barren, flat areas typical of Ballari district, Sandur stands out as a mini collection of hills and a valley between these. The hills come alive after the rains, perhaps prompting Mahatma Gandhi to coin the now famous “See Sandur in September” adage.

As a landscape lover, there is much to see and explore around Sandur. These are not places well marked on a map. There may not be well-known names to these places. Yet, to a discerning eye, much of these will look outstanding – both through the camera and of course to one’s eyes as well.

Having researched a bit about the place, I had found a couple of places to visit, routes to take. This apart, the “plan” was pretty simple. Drive around, stop and take photographs whenever it warrants. The place is still a hot bed for mining activities. The daytime sees a long line of trucks on the roads around Sandur. The roads themselves carry a tinge of red, which almost seems seeped into the very concrete surface!

A Chalukyan era temple sits atop a hill called Krauncha Giri, about 10 KM from Sandur. The Kumaraswamy temple dates back to the 10th century. The temple is said to have been discovered by the Sandur royal family and became better known post that.

The drive to the temple is breathtaking. The view from the higher reaches – Villages/settlements visible from atop the hill with greenery all around and hills in the background – looks stunning.

Reddish roads snaking through green fields on both sides. Also keeping us company on this route is a pipeline/track which is probably to carry the mining produce from the hills to factories. A villager I meet along the way, rues there may not be much of these hills left for his grandchildren to see. This is most likely going to turn out true in the future. For now, though, I tell him how beautiful his village is – we can cherish what we have today, and hope to try and preserve the same for future generations. It starts to rain a little and a faint rainbow starts to appear on the other side.

There is one well-known view point close to Sandur. I had seen people thronging the place while driving by. I chose to visit the place in the morning. As expected, I was alone – well, almost. There were a few monkeys for company. They decided not to bother me thankfully. With no people around, and a stiff morning breeze rattling an old, half-broken metal sign-post, the place seemed eerie. But, the view from atop, was gorgeous.

There is one disappointment I had from this trip. One of the places I had read about, and was so eager to photograph, was the Narihalla backwaters. With the crazy amount of rains we had this year, and given that the nearby Tungabhadra reservior was overflowing just a couple of weeks before my visit, I had hoped that Narihalla would be filled with water. It was not – in fact, it was near empty. This was heartbreaking for me – I just could not understand why. The staff at the Shivavilas hotel said that there were rains, but not enough. I could also see small settlements had cropped up on the reservoir bed. Whether they were temporary or not – I could not say. The only image I took here was of the mining pipeline track snaking through, carrying tons of mining raw materials every single day.

Nevertheless, Sandur is like a neat little place tucked away in a small valley surrounded by hills in an otherwise barren Ballari district. Whether you decide to make this a base for exploring Hampi, or take it easy and relax at the luxurious Shivavilas palace and venture out to savour the stunning landscapes around, you won’t be disappointed.

I’m doing something I have not done on my blog. I am going to tell you about a hotel! Before you roll your eyes and start wondering what’s up with me, let me tell you – the “hotel” was an erstwhile palace, now operating as a hotel since 2012. Though Shivavilas Palace now a hotel, the place retains the grandeur and charm fitting of a palace!

Sandur, as a place, is bit of a surprise. On the otherwise barren, flat areas typical of Ballari district, Sandur stands out as a mini collection of hills and a valley between these. More about Sandur later…

Shivavilas Palace was home to the erstwhile Ghorpade royal family. Built in 1941, the royal family maintained control of the palace till 2012, at which time, it was carefully and tastefully converted into a hotel, welcoming travelers to this little gem of a place. The feeling of royalty can be felt immediately upon entering the gates.

The pillared corridors with furniture that does not take away the erstwhile looks of the place, adorned by numerous images depicting the history, flora/fauna of Sandur through the years is a treat to watch. The high ceilings offer an airy ambience.

The place has 12 rooms and 2 suites (Maharaja and Maharani suites). Since the place was fully booked, we could not get a glimpse of the suites. But, I can imagine them vividly, given that our own simple room was grand beyond my imaginations.

Beautiful paintings and Lambani artworks are embellished liberally in the room. While the place retains its old-world looks, it still offers every amenity and service that a modern hotel has on offer. And all the staff are uber-helpful and go above/beyond to get things done for the guests. All this, done with genuine smiles on their faces!

Once the sun goes down, the palace REALLY comes alive!

I highly recommend a stay at the Shivavilas Palace at Sandur – check out their website. In Sandur itself, there are not many options for stay. Also, given that its a bit far from Hampi (about 40 kms), fewer people choose to stay here to explore Hampi – though, Hampi can be a perfect day trip from here. While Hampi takes all the attention, Sandur is picturesque in its own way. Its hard to imagine stunning green landscapes dotted with hills in the Ballari area. But, that’s exactly what Sandur is – a paradise, especially after the rains.

The UNESCO world heritage site of Hampi needs no introduction to anyone. I present 2 images from Hampi in this blog post with some commentary.

Queen’s bath – Lost in time, is how I can describe this. To imagine that this “building” was a private bathing complex for erstwhile royalty should say something about the grandeur of the golden era of Vijayanagara dynasty. I love the arched corridors here. On an earlier visit, a sunny evening got this lovely play of light and shadows. This time, it was a cloudy evening. I chatted with the caretaker till the closing time and he was kind enough to let me stay till everyone left and showed me a neat little corner to shoot this image from.

Stone chariot – Perhaps the most iconic, most photographed among the monuments at Hampi, is the stone chariot in the Vitthala temple complex. People get themselves photographed doing all sort of antics around this monument. Pushing the chariot, sitting on its wheels, posing like the chariot rider, etc. Its near impossible to find this monument devoid of people around. But, with a good amount of patience and choosing a slightly different angle to shoot from can result in an image with no people in it. Something that shows the monument in all its grandeur, and nothing else to distract the viewers.

I think this was my 4th visit to Ayyana Kere – a pretty popular lake near Chikmagalur. Guess I’m more regular in my visits to this place than in keeping my blog updated (bad joke!).

Though being a seemingly popular place, this place seldom disappoints – check out the post from my last visit. Being a late monsoon evening, there were moody foreboding cloudy slowly taking over the skies. It seemed like the weather decided to skip golden hour altogether and get right into the blue hour. Here are a couple of images from that evening!

Vagamon

This hill station that is silent and offbeat is a piece of land that is untouched. Vagamon is famous for waterfalls, meadows, dense pine forests, tea estates, as well as its deep valleys. This was one of a last-minute-planned outing we set out for, on an early Saturday morning. Having chosen to leave the kid behind at home, me and my wife could have an early start – 5:00 AM. With the northerly shift of the sun after the festival of Sankranthi, winter is meant to be receding. But winter made its presence well and truly felt, the moment we were well outside of the Bangalore city limits. The temperature on the car’s dashboard display showed 10 deg C!

While driving, Google maps showed a section of slow moving traffic coming up ahead. A short section of “yellow”, followed by some “red” too! We were a bit puzzled – on a tarmac as excellent as NH-7, and no major town or intersection coming up, this was not expected. As we neared the “yellow” section, the issue made itself clear – or should I say foggy?

The fog made vehicles crawl at a quarter of the usual highway speeds. After driving for a few minutes, we made our way out of the fog. Here we saw the sun shining bright, trying to shoo away the reluctant fog. We parked the car on the shoulder of the road. Vehicles behind us seemed to be emerging from behind a wall of fog!

To think that I had almost left my camera behind for this outing, makes me look really stupid, for I was scampering with camera in hand trying to capture the magical symphony/cacophony that the fog and sunlight were creating. The stage for this was a plain-old grape farm. Have a look at the images below!

A few meters further, there was another grape farm, but the creepers were missing. Only the stone pillars and the meshed roof to support the creepers were there. Combined with the retreating fog and the golden sunlight, this scene looked absolutely surreal! We went on to our eventual destination after this and enjoyed our actual planned visit. But this, to me, was the highlight of the whole outing!

The best laid plans might often go awry. But, making the best out of an unplanned event like this is what matters! Have you had any such experience? Do give me a shout out in the comments below!
