Take the sunset image provided, a single exposure would leave us with either a correctly exposed foreground and a burnt out sky, or a well-exposed sky and a foreground that's almost black. Combining your exposures is the only way of getting those highlights and shadows just right. The Exposure Merge feature is new to Elements 8, so those with older versions will need to upgrade, but watch the video to find out how easy it is to achieve!

Related Stories

Photoshop tutorial: make a sunrise photo shine

How to reduce digital noise

How to fake a graduated ND filter

How to add a new sky in Photoshop

How to use the clone stamp tool to remove distractions

How to use the clone stamp tool to remove distractions

Master the Clone Stamp tool and improve your landscapes in minutes by effectively erasing distracting clutter

There's no doubt about it - a good panoramic landscape can really blow away a standard-ratio image, especially when printed at a large size and hung in a gallery on or your living room wall. The panoramic format not only captures the scene as the eye perceives it, but also really gives a sense of the true scale and proportion of any landscape. The stitching interface in Photoshop Elements is fairly straightforward and largely automated, but we'll talk you through it step by step - once you've selected your source files, we'll show you how to merge your shots, how to blend them using layer masks to make your seams invisible, and how to crop out any extraneous areas of canvas. Watch to find out more!

Related Stories

Photoshop tutorial: make a sunrise photo shine

How to reduce digital noise

How to fake a graduated ND filter

How to add a new sky in Photoshop

How to create an HDR landscape in Photoshop

How to add a new sky in Photoshop

Replace a bland sky to add impact to lacklustre landscapes without losing delicate details

When it comes to shooting sunsets, perhaps the biggest challenge of all is being in the right place at the right time. You may spot a stunning sunset, but have no interesting foreground features to add extra shapes and forms to the image. Or you might shoot an impactful landscape as a backlit silhouette, but lack an interesting sky due to the absence of colourful clouds. But all is not lost. Using Photoshop's powerful blending modes, you can remove an unwanted sky from a landscape and drop in a new sunset on a separate layer. This way you can combine different times and places to create more exciting landscapes. In this video we'll show you how to use layer blending techniques to combine a new sky with your foreground landscape layer without losing a single twig

Related Stories

20 essential Photoshop tutorials

How to reduce digital noise

How to fake a graduated ND filter

How to use the clone stamp tool to remove distractions

How to create an HDR landscape in Photoshop

How to reduce digital noise

Use Adobe's Camera Raw editor to reduce noise pollution in your landscape's skies

Although high-ISO technology has helped to dramatically reduce noise levels in images, grainy images at higher ISO settings can still be a problem. However, Adobe's Camera Raw software has a simple solution - the Noise Reduction command. There are two types of digital noise: luminance (or grayscale) noise, which makes your images look grainy, and chrome (or colour) noise, which appears as coloured artefacts in your images. In Camera Raw you have 2 control sliders: Luminance to reduce grayscale noise, and Colour to reduce chroma noise. Watch this video to find out how to reduce the noise in your images in just seconds!

Related Stories

Improve winter skies in Photoshop

Create a high-key mono snowscape in Photoshop

How to add a new sky in Photoshop

How to use the clone stamp tool to remove distractions

How to create an HDR landscape in Photoshop

How to fake a graduated ND filter

Use Photoshop Elements to reveal detail in over exposed skies for more balanced exposures

When photographic landscapes, flat, dull light inevitably results in flat, dull images. Or you end up with unbalanced exposures - usually with overly bright, bland skies - as you've been forced to expose to capture detail in your foregrounds. There are ways to capture dramatic landscape shots on overcast days - you might use a graduated neutral density (ND Grad) filter attached to your D-SLR's lens. ND Grads are neutral grey at the top, fading down to clear at the bottom. They help to capture more balanced exposures by darkening bright skies while enabling you to retain detail and tones in your darker foreground areas. The problem is, they're expensive and you might not always have them to hand. this great Photoshop Blending Mode trick

Make the dark areas of your shots lighter, and the bright areas darker - the smart way to dodge and burn.

You'll often find that only some parts of the image require correcting. Perhaps one section of sky needs darkening or a single spot in the shadows needs brightening. There are lots of ways in which selective corrections can be done in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. However, many photographers take the easy route and simply grab the darkening Burn tool or the brightening Dodge tool. The trouble with this is that these tools give you little control over the effect. It's hard to see which areas you've worked on and it can be hard to soften the adjustment. An alternative is to make corrections using the Brush tool and a new layer set to the Soft Light Blending Mode. Watch the video to find out more.

Related Stories

Create a perfect sunrise in Photoshop

Photoshop tutorial: make a sunrise photo shine

20 essential Photoshop tutorials

How to fake a graduated ND filter

How to add a new sky in Photoshop

Remove shadows in Photoshop to highlight details

Target and adjust specific tones to lighten shadows without blowing out the highlights

When shooting in direct sunlight there can be a dramatic contrast between the shadows and highlights in a scene. Sunlight striking a cap can cast harsh shadow over eyes. In a portrait the first thing people look at is the eyes, so these kind of shots needs some tonal tweaking to make the shaded areas more visible. To make tonal adjustments you need the powerful Shadows/Highlights command in Photoshop Elements' Adjust Lighting menu. to add traditional film effects in Photoshop Part 2 of 2

Edit your digital photographs to replicate a film effect look and give your landscapes an unusual twist.

Once you've learned how to shoot and edit photographs, why not try experimenting with different creative techniques in Photoshop. In this tutorial we'll show you how to add a cross-processed look which will help give your landscape shots an unusual edge. The effect replicates the skewed colours and contrasts film photographers used to get if they processed their film in the wrong chemicals. The sweat, the mud, the speed… it's a great way to hone your action photography skills and to try out creative camera techniques like zoom-bursts and slow-sync flash. Best of all, unlike many sports, you can get in close with your camera. You don't need big, heavy telephoto lenses – a camera kit lens can give you lots of creative options. Whether you visit one of the UK’s growing list of purpose-built trail centres or simply turn up at a race venue, there’s no shortage of mountain bike riders willing to show off their skills in front of the camera. Follow our tips below to do them justice!

Related Stories

5 top tips for shooting motorsport

Better winter bird shots

Take great photos of wild swans, geese and ducks – our beginner's guide shows you how

In Britain it’s easier to get out there with your digital camera and photograph wild birds than it is to photograph wild mammals. Winter brings a vast number of migrating swans, geese and ducks to the UK's wetland areas and many nature reserves and centres are geared up for getting you close views of the spectacle with the minimum of effort. Working from a permanent hide inevitably means compromises though – naturally you’ll be restricted on the shooting position and you’ll perhaps need to settle for a wider ‘environmental’ shot if you don’t have a long enough lens to get you in really close. Follow our top 10 tips for the camera gear and techniques you need for 'quacking' (sorry...) bird photos.

How to crop images for print

Resize your images with the correct aspect ratio to get perfect prints every time

Sometimes you need to make a print with a different aspect ratio to your original file. If you've ever ordered an 8x10 inch print from an online printing service without resizing your file first, you'll know how disappointing it can be to see that the ends of your lovely shot have been chopped off by an uncaring machine. This doesn't really need to be as the Crop tool in Photoshop can be used to prpare your digital photos for printing at traditional photo paper sizes. Watch this video to find out how it's done in less than 5 minutes.

Related Stories

Enlarge your photos

Create a high contrast lith conversion in Photoshop Elements

Remove grey tones to create a high-contrast, arty lith image using Photoshop Elements in just 5 minutes

Most black and white images aren't black and white, if they're well exposed they will have a full tonal range, with most of the image made up of varying shades of grey. In the days of film photography, lith film was used to create high-contrast black and white images with little in the way of midtones. This tutorial will show you how to take the lith look to the extreme. It's a style that only suits certain images, but it can transform a less than inspiring colour shot into a graphic high-impact image. Watch the video to find out how it's done.

Related Stories

Create a perfect sunrise in Photoshop

Photoshop tutorial: make a sunrise photo shine

20 essential Photoshop tutorials

How to fake a graduated ND filter

How to add a new sky in Photoshop

Photoshop sharpening in 3 easy steps

This useful technique will help bring sharper detail to soft-looking wildlife shots without adding unwanted artefacts.

When photographing wildlife with a wide aperture setting (such as f/5.6) you might find that the animal's body is sharply focused while its face appears a bit soft. This is because wide aperture settings produce a shallow depth of field, making it difficult to get all of an object in focus. When faced with a small amount of blur, you can use Photoshop Elements to sharpen up the problem areas and reveal more detail. Watch this video to find out how it's done.

<img colour and saturation in Photoshop

Colour correction in Photoshop doesn't need to be complicated. Follow this guide to quickly and easily tackle all your colour needs.

Colour correction is an essential part of the image-editing process, but luckily Photoshop's Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) editor makes it easy, with most colour corrections only needing a few seconds to complete. If you're unfamiliar with ACR's 3 key tools however, the prospect of using it can be a little daunting. Adobe has seperated the colour correction tools into 3 different areas, the white balance tool, the temperature slider and the vibrance and saturation sliders. Here we'll show you the basic techniques that should form the basis of your Photoshop work.

<img to remove dust and imperfections from photos

Dust on your D-SLR's sensor can ruin your image. Watch this video to find out how to use Photoshop's dust removal tools to get blemish free shots.

No matter how careful you are, dust always seems to end up in the inner workings of your D-SLR. This is most problematic in landscape photography as shooting at small apertures such as f/22 aren't as forgiving as shooting at, say, f/4. Often the first time you'll notice these marks appearing on your shots is when you open them up in Photoshop. Most imperfections can be removed using Photoshop's 3 main dust removal tools, each of which can be used to quickly fix different areas and blemish types. Find out how to use the Spot Healing Brush, the Healing Brush and the Clone tool.

<img to photograph winter

Take great pictures of snow, frost, mist and fog with our essential tips

In the UK, there’s no match for the quality of light you get in winter. There’s a crispness and range of colour that you just don’t get at any other time. To shoot in the best light you need to be up and out before the sun rises, or hang around until it goes down. But with the shorter days of winter, you’ll be out with your camera at a much more civilized hour than you would in high summer. Make the effort and you’ll be rewarded by a rich quality of light that can change from second to second. Just make sure you wrap up well – you don’t want your batteries running out before your camera’s! If you’d prefer to take that extra hour in bed, there’s good news. The sun is lower during the winter months, so you can carry on shooting through the entire day and still get beautifully lit shots.

Related Stories

Improve winter skies in Photoshop

Create a high-key mono snowscape in Photoshop

Camera tips for cold weather photography

Related Stories

Improve winter skies in Photoshop

Create a high-key mono snowscape in Photoshop

Camera tips for cold weather photography
