Abandoned Places In the World is a look at abandoned places in 6 of the 7 continents, from Namibia, to California, making stops in Japan, France, Italy, Hong Kong and Russia (among many others). Historic commentary accompanies the photos which come mostly from photos posted on Flickr.

This would have made a fantastic interactive piece.

Yesterday, when catching up on my Gothamist RSS feed, Arun Wiita's Subway Project struck me as an amazing idea. From the Gothamist article:

In July of 2007 Arun Wiita visited all 468 subway stations in New York City, taking photos around each of them. At one point during the ten days of documenting, he was detained by police, handcuffed and held for 30 minutes. Later in the year he filed a Civil Liberties lawsuit, with an overall goal of changing the NYPD's photography policies.

As someone who is set to move to New York at the beginning of July, this is just as much useful as it is a piece of art. The descriptions of the areas just outside the stop, and the imagery makes it seem as though you're there.

Check out all 468 subway stops at The New York Subway Project.

With the release of the iTunes App Store last year, naturally there have been
lots of applications submitted and available for purchase that deal with Photos.
It only make sense, after all, but there are two that I'm aware of that do
something that makes them stand out from the crowd. (NOTE: I have not used
either as I do not have an iPhone and refuse to pay to upgrade my iPod Touch to
the 2.0 firmware).

iFOTOMO is a viewer for
Flickr photos that presents them in a mosaic. However, the user can pan and zoom, and upon zooming make the zoomed image the new mosaic target. It is a very interesting concept, and adds something new to the many Flickr viewers out there, at least that I've seen.

The other app that I've seen that I would definitely purchase, is Nick Campbell's ShakeItPhoto. What is interesting about this, is that it emulates an "old school" Polaroid camera in that upon snapping a photo, with the iPhone's camera, the processing is designed to take a little while to finish, but, it speeds up when you shake your phone—just like a Polaroid. You can see it in action here, and see a ton of examples on Nick's ShakeItPhoto photo blog.

It looks like Ritz will be closing 300 stores across the country in the coming months, with liquidations sales starting as early as April 4th. Ritz filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February.

But, if you think you're going to find some liquidation deals, be wary. The company hired to oversee the liquidation sales is notorious for being evil.

Photojojo has a very unique tutorial for developing your own film without all the harsh chemicals (well, you still need fixer). The main ingredients are instant coffee and vitamin C and the results are pretty indistinguishable from a normal process. It is definitely something of a novelty, and probably not for the serious wildlife photographer, but it looks like a lot of fun!

Save JPG is a site that was started by 15x100, 15 Photographs by 100 Photographers, to try and save JPG in one form or another. (As a side note, 15x100 is a pretty interesting project)

In other positive news, JPG Magazine apparently has had some interest in acquisition. The interest in the site means that it'll survive at least another week, with hopes of much longer.

There's also been some interesting ideas in the comments on the Save JPG site. Comments suggesting that JPG should charge money to post to the site, but remain open to view. Something like this I feel might work, but I'm unsure what you'd actually be buying. Flickr, for instance, is a photo backup solution in some regards with a Pro account. The unlimited storage, unlimited uploads is key there.

But, what else could JPG do to survive? Could JPG turn into a generic photo sharing site, or what about the possibility of taking the community magazine to the next level and let individuals of the community create their own issues? I don't know, but the question of JPG's survival, and the form it survives in, is something I look forward to getting an answer to.

It's no secret that I've been a fan of JPG Mag. I've submitted images on numerous occasions, have subscribed, took part in voting for nearly every theme since issue 7, and have been an RSS subscriber to their blog for some time now. So, it was extremely sad news for me to receive in my inbox this morning an email saying goodbye from the Editor in Chief, Laura Brunow Miner.

JPG had an interesting idea, and unfortunately it couldn't sustain itself. I know I'll miss the community of amazing photographers, and taking part in the JPG experiment. Thank JPG Mag for all your hard work!

Local Philadelphia photographer Scott Spitzer loves to take pictures, and only "likes" running, but combined the two yesterday when he ran the NYC Marathon yesterday. I asked him why he brought his camera along (just a point and shoot btw), and his response was:

I wanted to share the experience of the run with those that did not run it. I wanted the viewer to be transposed into my shoes, see what I saw and feel the energy and devotion of the fans watching.

That's what photography is all about, and for the record, I "ran" the race in 5hrs 46mins, in my transposed reality. Check out Scott's Photos.

The GIMP team has released version 2.6 of The GIMP. If ever there was a time to have a look at the best free software alternative to Photoshop, this would be it.

GIMP 2.6 is an important release from a development point of view. It features changes to the user interface addressing some often received complaints, and a tentative integration of GEGL, the graph based image processing library that will eventually bring high bit-depth and non-destructive editing to GIMP.

The new UI looks great, and I can't wait to play around with it.

Also, have a look at this WebMonkey article for more details, and a review.

Seem like everyone is going around using words like "game changing," but Vincent Laforet might be on to something, Canon's 5D MKII. He says the quality is so good, there's no reason to ever shoot stills again. Shoot video and grab the 1080p frames. If that's not enough though, it apparently shoots 21 megapixels, with stunning quality at 3200 ISO. I sure hope Nikon has something other than the laggy D90 to compete with it, or it might just be "Game, Set, Match" won by Canon.

Update: Yup, GAME CHANGING!
