Together, we have redesigned ENT services across South East London to provide more integrated, person-centred care closer to home. The results have been significant: · 33% reduction in waiting lists · More than 2,000 long waits eliminated · Median waits reduced from 22 weeks to 4.5 weeks · 82% of care now delivered in community settings · Over 17,000 acute appointments released annually for patients requiring specialist hospital care Christian Lyons, Chief Executive Officer at Communitas Clinics expressed “Being shortlisted for Provider Collaboration of the Year at the HSJ Awards 2026 is a significant achievement and a reflection of the commitment and ambition of everyone involved in this initiative. Even after office hours,his laptop was still open. While others were having dinner with family,he was replying to emails. While others rested on weekends, he was “just finishing one more thing.” At first, people admired him for it. “He’s so dedicated.” “He really cares.” “He’s always available.” And honestly,he did care. A lot. But slowly,work started taking pieces from his life. Skipped meals. Poor sleep. Constant stress. Doctor appointments pushed to “next month.” One day,his health finally forced him to stop. And the hardest part? The company moved on faster than anyone expected. Someone else took over the work. Meetings continued. Deadlines continued. That moment stayed with me. Because it reminded me of something uncomfortable: No matter how important we feel at work, everyone is replaceable there. But you are not replaceable to your family, your health,your life, or the people who truly love you. A report says nearly 77% of employees experience burnout at work. And I believe it. If official tools like Teams aren't easily accessible on personal phones or feel clunky on the move, people will naturally gravitate toward the path of least resistance. While this keeps the workflow moving, it creates "Shadow IT," leaving sensitive data unmanaged and outside the secure perimeter. The learning opportunity: Instead of seeing this as a disciplinary issue, companies should view it as a feedback loop. When employees bypass official systems, they are highlighting a gap in the organisation's technology or accessibility. The lesson for any IT department is simple - if the secure way isn't the easy way, it won't be the followed way. How to fix it: Forward-thinking organisations are moving away from rigid "blocks" and toward better enablement. A key strategy is overhauling the induction process to include practical, human-led Information Governance (IG) training from Day 1. This means: Providing immediate access: Ensuring secure mobile tools are configured and usable the moment a staff member starts. Explaining the "Why": Moving beyond "don’t use this" to explaining the real-world risks of unmanaged data. Simplifying Workflows: Adapting corporate tools to be as intuitive as consumer apps and providing training on those tools, if needed. Paul Howard posted thisPrivacy isn’t a policy. It’s a habit. In healthcare, we throw around the term Information Governance (IG) a lot. It sounds technical. Procedural. A bit dry. But strip it back, and it comes down to one simple thing: trust. Working in a clinic’s back office, it’s easy to become detached. Patients become names on a screen. Voices on a phone. Rows in a database. But behind every record is a real person. Someone who expects their most personal information to stay exactly that - personal. And here’s the part that often gets missed - this isn’t just a “frontline” responsibility. It’s not just a healthcare issue either. Whether you’re handling medical records, financial data, HR files, or legal documents, the responsibility is the same. Security isn’t one person’s job - it’s a team sport. The small habits that make the biggest difference: The “Win + L” reflex: Stepping away for 10 seconds? Lock your screen. An unlocked PC in a shared space is an open invitation. The printer trap: We’ve all done it. Hit print, then got distracted. That one sheet left behind? That’s a potential breach. If you wouldn’t leave your bank statement on a bus, don’t leave sensitive data on a printer. The physical key: Smartcards, fobs, access badges - these stay with you. Always. Leaving them behind is no different to leaving your house keys in the front door. The “overhear” factor: Privacy isn’t just digital, it’s physical and audible too. When verifying sensitive information, be aware of who else might be listening. It’s easy to see these as small things. Admin. Red tape. Box-ticking. But to the person whose data you’re handling? That information is their life. They trust us to do the right thing, even when they can’t see it. Then we created an exception rule for the CEO... because Multi-Factor Authentication "ruined his vibe" The IT department spent six months turning the company into an absolute fortress. Every junior staff member, accountant, and intern had their access restricted. USB ports were disabled. Number-matching MFA was enforced. Password managers were mandated. Then the CEO tried to log in from his iPad while on vacation, got prompted for a 2-digit security code, and sent an angry email to the IT Director at 11pm: "I don't have time for this. Fix it." So, naturally, IT created the "Executive Bypass Group." Now, the only person in the company with absolute, unmonitored access to the bank accounts, payroll, and strategic M&A documents is also the only person operating completely unprotected. This absurd corporate ritual plays out weekly. Hackers aren't spending months trying to break into the laptop of a junior SDR. They are monitoring the C-suite. They know who has global admin access, who approves the wires, and who gets annoyed by basic security prompts. When you create "executive exemptions," you might as well build a massive, red-carpet entry straight into the business. If your CEO is too busy to type a 2-digit code on their phone, they are too busy to handle the fallout of a $2 million ransomware attack. Agree?

But if the PACS is lagging, or the secure messaging platform is too clunky to actually use, that two minutes turns into a bottleneck that backs up the whole department. I spent years as an IT Director inside a radiology group before I ever called myself a consultant. That seat taught me something most MSPs never see up close: radiology isn't "healthcare IT with a compliance checklist." It's its own animal. This month marks one year since I took that experience and built IT PrimeTime around it. A few things I learned the hard way, both before and during this first year: → PACS uptime isn't a nice-to-have. It's the line between reads happening on schedule and a backlog that damages referring physician relationships. → Secure messaging has to be fast enough that radiologists and techs actually use it, or they'll quietly default back to personal texting. Which is its own HIPAA exposure. → Generic IT playbooks don't hold up against RIS, PACS, and billing integrations that each have their own quirks. That's the gap I built my practice around. Not general MSP services with a healthcare label slapped on top, but IT built specifically around how radiology groups actually work. Not because there's nothing to do.... Not because we don't care.... Because we've fixed the underlying issues and everything isn't constantly on fire. Life is good, life is boring. Too many organisations mistake busyness for productivity. People rushing around, unfinished/rushed work, rework of the rework..most things marked urgent. It can feel like progress because everyone is working flat out. But I'd argue the opposite. Success is when the important things are under control. The process works, people know what they're doing... Problems are spotted early! Work flows.... and then...every now and again....you get a few minutes to sit back.... relax .... think about"what's next".. instead of scrambling to fix what just broke. ...TIME UP back to this post That's not laziness. That's what good systems look like.
