Ivo Jansch

Summary

This is definitely a very interesting book about SDLC - Software Development Life Cycle.

Despite it is difficult to focus the scope and the target public of the book writing about an area that encompasses too many topics of interest, Ivo Jansch, the author, did a great job to achieve this result with success.

We should keep in mind that he is also aiming to increase the perceived value of PHP in the enterprise by publishing the first SDLC directed to PHP market.

The author lent his knowledge, experience and thoughts about the PHP language in every chapter. That is why it is very appropriate for PHP professionals.

It fills the gap of books about enterprise software development using PHP, which is an area that is already well covered by other books about other languages and platforms, like Java or .NET.

It provides great overviews in many fields, addressing all the latest techniques and approaches to deliver great PHP applications.

It is indeed a great book that brings the PHP developer to a next level, describing all the current PHP hot topics, such as SPL, advanced object oriented programming techniques, unit testing, continuous integration, code documentation, PHP 6 features, the Standard PHP Library (SPL), MVC architecture among others.

Summary

In my opinion, I would not recommend this book to advanced system administrators nor for those who expect a complete guide about Moodle extensions, core development or internal system tricks. Sadly, there is not yet a Moodle book directed to this audience, like it is Packt's "Joomla extension development" book about complex Joomla CMS features.

On the other hand, it is the best book choice for all Moodle regular procedures, like installing, configuring, using, administering and teaching Moodle techniques. I work with Moodle for 3 years. From now on this is an essential Moodle guide on my personal bookshelf.

Summary

In sum, the Blue Ocean Strategy is a series of practices that help making companies so successful that their competitors become practically irrelevant.

This book can provide great insight, whether you dream of building the next Google or Apple-like company, or you just want to understand how companies like that became so successful.

The book is particularly recommended to everybody, business managers or not, that are working at startup companies, so they can quickly figure whether their companies are heading (or not) to a successful blue ocean with a very bright and lasting future.

Summary

This book is not a documentation of framework. It is rather a guide of what we can do with CodeIgniter.

The book is very useful because it describes not only the framework but also good tips on how to work with PHP.

The concepts on how to develop systems for the enterprise with CodeIgniter are also explained.

A word that I would use to describe this book is that it is a map, because you learn about a light and powerful framework and also see how powerful PHP has become.

Summary

After reading this book you come to the conclusion that it reaches its objectives because all the concepts and issues raised in the book are explained and demonstrated with practical examples.

It is recommended to all who want to make the most of their applications, designing a robust architecture, not only for CMS systems, but for any type of Web based system.

In addition, the chapters follow a clear order begins while explaining core issues including the the user interface and application installation.

It is great work from the book author and the publisher, as we now have another great title, not only about PHP, but also about designing an architecture for software not just for only for creating content management systems.

PHP is popular web development language. Lots of tips and tutorials are freely available on the Web. But they are scattered and very difficult to decide which is the a right solution to use for each kind of problem.

During the development stage of a project, time is an important factor. This book is a handy solution on the problems commonly faced by every programmer during their PHP development experience. Therefore this book is recommended to new and enthusiastic PHP coders.
