Fresh after the festivities of the 20th anniversary of the Berlin wall falling, another event lands at the East Side Gallery in the spirit of freedom. Justin Tellian's The Dreamers project, which started in Brooklyn, has embarked on an intercontinental world tour with stops along Mexico City, Berlin, Tokyo and finally Johannesburg with one message: wear white, and dare to dream big.

This Saturday, Tllian invites everyone--"artists, poets, musicians, schoolchildren, lovers, and creators of all kinds"--to join him as he takes portraits along the symbolic 1.3-kilometer stretch of the wall of those people courageous enough to call themselves dreamers. But of course: an after party, location TBD, will follow.

We couldn't believe our eyes, when we read that this pearl of modern American comedies never actually had an Austrian premiere.

In this quote-for-days-flick Will Ferrell is TV news anchor Ron Burgundy in 1970s San Diego. This is Pre-B.W. (Barbara Walters), a dark age when men reported the news almost exclusively.
Burgundy, shallow and self-absorbed without redemption, chases skirts and is so genuinely stupid he reads ANYTHING on the teleprompter. His news crew consists of adulators and one misfit, Brick Tamland, played with unremitting mental blankness by Steve Carrell.
Burgundy's dog is a delight, a pooch who can bark in a few languages.

The "Men's Club" is jolted by the station honcho's decision to add a woman to the newsroom, largely to appease the network satraps. He says it's necessary in the interests of "diversity," a word one staff member doesn't even understand. Enter pretty but tough Veronica Corningstone, Christina Applegate.

A misadventure by Burgundy results in Veronica's pinch-hitting chance to anchor the evening news. Veronica scores big time. She and Ron are already lovers and she expects him to be thrilled that his absence was her big break. The rest of the film is Ron's Revenge and Veronica's Counterattack.

Michaels career, not only as an artist, is a rather unusual one: born in 1969 in Vienna, he got interested in technology, especially electronics and mathematics, already when 7 years old. At the age of 12 he worked as a programmer. He quit school at 17 and started his first own business in the financial field, publishing analysis on the financial markets and managing funds, until he sold his business at the age of 23. The following 3 years he spent climbing and hiking in Africa, USA, Asia, and all over Europe.

From 1995 on he was the publisher of werk-zeug, a technology and art magazine, as well as streetfashion, a magazine featuring fashionable people on the streets all over the world. He was also active in the field of software development, is the originator of many inventions, and holds international patents ranging from climbing equipment and bicycle gears to trading systems and electronic payment systems.

In early 2005, the company went bankrupt, and Michael lost all his money in the process. Never shying away from new challenges, he decided to write a book about the company and its end: English and German versions of "The end of EBay"... Qentis' bankruptcy also had its good sides: finally, Michael could concentrate on his art and private studies.

Red Arrow Project

At last weekend's Art Under the Bridge Festival in Brooklyn, artists Jennifer Fisher and Christian Cerrito launched their Red Arrow Project. The project consisted of several floating cursor kites (which were tied to weather balloons) pointing at random locations and encouraging people to be mindful of things they normally might not look at.

Fisher and Cerrito's floating red arrows may provide some competition with New York's long-running Yellow Arrow Project.

One of the last Herzog films being shown in this unofficial Herzog season, arts organisation V22, are obviously saving the best til last. The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner has been described as one of Herzog's best works and the director himself calls it "one of my most important films."

The documentary follows the extraordinary story of Walter Steiner, a German carpenter who also happened to be a world champion ski-jumper during the 1970s. Told in Herzog's inimitable style, this short feature focusses on Steiner's fearlessness juxtaposed with his more mundane day job, as well as the poetry and pitfalls of a challenging sport. The film's being shown at Cafe Oto, a little gem of a cafe in Dalston but it's not a huge space so be sure to book your tickets.

Scan of Internet Uncovers Thousands of Vulnerable Embedded Devices

Researchers scanning the internet for vulnerable embedded devices have found nearly 21,000 routers, webcams and VoIP products open to remote attack. Their administrative interfaces are viewable from anywhere on the internet and their owners have failed to change the manufacturer's default password.

Linksys routers had the highest percent of vulnerable devices found in the United States -- 45 percent of 2,729 routers that were publicly accessible still had a default password in place. Polycom VoIP units came in second, with default passwords lingering on about 29 percent of 585 devices accessible over the internet.

"You can reflash the firmware or install any software you wish on vulnerable devices," said Salvatore Stolfo, a Columbia University computer science professor who is overseeing the research project aimed at uncovering vulnerable appliances on the internet. "These devices will be owned and used by bot herders and other miscreants."

Hackers can use vulnerable routers to conduct click fraud or DNS cache poisoning attacks or to launch attacks on other systems. (See our recent Threat Level story about vulnerable routers used by Time Warner customers.) Someone with remote access to the administrative interface of a VoIP system would also be able to install firmware to record conversations.

The research project, devised by Columbia University grad student Ang Cui at the university's Intrusion Detection Systems Laboratory, involves scanning networks belonging to the largest internet service providers in North America, Europe and Asia. The lab is sponsored by the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (Darpa), the Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies.

"Vulnerable devices can be found in significant numbers in all parts of the world covered by our scan," (.pdf) the researchers wrote in a summary of their initial findings presented at a symposium in June. "The double digit vulnerability rates suggest that a large botnet can be created by constituting only embedded network devices."

Since initiating the project last December, the Intrusion Detection researchers have scanned 130 million IP addresses and found nearly 300,000 devices whose administrative interfaces were remotely accessible from anywhere on the internet. The 21,000 devices with default passwords are the most vulnerable, but the rest are theoretically vulnerable to brute-force password-cracking attacks, Stolfo said. Extrapolating from the numbers they've gathered, the researchers estimate that 6 million vulnerable devices are likely connected to the internet.

The group has so far focused on residential routers and devices but is now looking at scanning more sensitive networks to search for vulnerable devices inside large corporations and government networks.

"People tend to buy stuff and bring them to work and just plug them in," Stolfo said. "So we think we'll be able to find vulnerable devices in highly sensitive places."

The researchers didn't attempt to explore the administrative interfaces or tamper with the devices they found, so they believe their work isn't illegal.

"The scan script sends the public password for the product, and if the device responds with the 'command prompt' for that product interface, then the machine is obviously open," Stolfo said. "We do not access the machine. We break the connection at that point and move on."

ISPs can easily detect the scanning, and the researchers embedded a URL in their probes for a webpage explaining the project that gives network providers a chance to opt out. Stolfo says a couple of universities, a security company and government agency have so far asked to be exempt from the scan.

The researchers have provided ISPs with their findings in the hope that they will do something to protect vulnerable customers.

"It's not clear how an ISP is going to do a general announcement, but we hope there will be some way to communicate to the home user in particular about what they have to do to reconfigure their device," Stolfo said.

But Stolfo says product makers are the real culprits and need to hide their administrative interfaces by default and provide clear instructions for users who want to alter that configuration. Vendors should also be more forceful in communicating to users that default passwords need to be changed to robust alphanumeric passwords that include special characters to thwart brute force attacks.

"This is not a password you're going to need every day, so setting a very hard password and recording it at home on a piece of paper is probably a safe thing to do," Stolfo says.

The group plans to run the scan for a few more months, then wait before re-running it to see if the number of vulnerable devices has fallen after they've notified ISPs about the vulnerabilities.

Multitouch-Barcelona is a project that was initiated in 2008 by four youngsters. The group started off with a solid technological base that has expanded to other fields in order to satisfy the curiosity of its members. Presently, the group combines technology with multiple disciplines such as communication, design and interaction.

The principal objective of its integrants is to implicate people in unique experiences. The concept of "user" is too superficial to continue being useful; they prefer to speak of people, of their feelings and their emotions.

One of their latest projects, "HI, a real human interface", suggests the nature of their focus to experiment with the experiencial. The importance of the human figure becomes evident in this audiovisual project in which there is no better interface than human beings themselves.

The first issue of Vienna based Unser Magazin is about to emerge ... And for this, the Unser crew needs your ideas, photos, illustrations and texts!

Our subject is Home Is Where The Heart Is. You certainly know the feeling, of being at exactly the right place at exactly the right - even if it is just for a moment. This "place" can be a person, the old hoodie from your teenage-wardrobe or the moment when you sit in the back of a car with your loved one right next to you and you just know: This is it, you don't want to be anywhere else in the world. But it can also be the bittersweet melancholy or sadness that grows around things and places that used to be home - but are not anymore.

Unser Magazin will be issued twice a year in a registered circulation of 200 copies, 80 pages, A5, printed in black and white.

We will use different styles of paper, there will be a little photo album inside, pretty cut-out name plates for your front door, a comic-version of Elvis' old tune "Home is where the heart is" and a photo series of ex-boyfriends and the rooms they used to live in.

As you can see, our subject is quite open. Apart from top visual creatives and authors we now invite YOU to contribute to the magazine. Please send your proposals, ideas, concepts and submissions until October 28th to info@unsermagazin.net. As far as text is concerned we are not so much interested in "real" journalistic pieces, but care more for literary texts such as short stories and poems, attempts of gonzo, borderline-journalism and other dramatically different forms.

We don't care if your submission has already been published as long as it fits in. Visuals naturally have to work in black and white. The most interesting submissions will be published.

The last G8 summit would have undoubtedly been much less boring if a colossal Martian chicken had appeared just a few meters away from the event.
That did not happen, but Kawasaki Minoru, the Japanese Ed Wood, certainly would have hoped for it to so he could laugh at Yankee arrogance, polonium 210 and French skirt chasing plus, while at it, pay impassioned "fan fatal" tribute to classic monster and superhero movies.

Well Kawasaki has done it, all this and more, with an old-style revival starring the most ridiculous monster in "kaiju eiga" and a Beat Takeshi idolized as the Hindu version of Daimajin.

Mauer Mob. 2009 - Recreating the Berlin Wall is a large scale art project in the frame work of the 20 year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, in Berlin, Germany. The idea is to form on the 9th of november 2009 - the night the Wall fell 20 years ago - a line of people that will recreate the Berlin Wall with their physical presence, marking the path where the wall once stood. Thousands of people will form a human chain that will make its way on the 9th of november around 8.15pm. This action will last for approximately 15 minutes.

The Berlin Wall project is about creating a "temporary monument of reflection". When it was created, the wall was one of the clearest man-made divisions of people with different ideologies. For the 20th anniversary of its deconstruction we will rebuild the Berlin Wall, not from steel and concrete, but from people. To remember when Berlin became one again after decades of separations - physically as well as in the minds...

With the "Mauer Mob. 09 Project", the organizers want to say that such divisions are no longer acceptable in today's society.

To join, just register with one of the 330 groups of 33.000 people recreating the wall.
