This World Congress of Manual/Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy is held only once every 4 years and will be the next international gathering of physiotherapists and physical therapists in 2012. IFOMPT is the largest recognized sub-group of the World Confederation of Physical Therapists (WCPT) and after the huge success of World Physical Therapy in Amsterdam last year this will be your next opportunity to join a large international gathering from the physiotherapy and physical therapy profession. Keynote speakers including David Butler, Gray Cook, Gwendolen Jull, Karim Khan, Prof. Peter O’Sullivan, Annelies Pool, Shirley A. Sahrmann, Joy MacDermid, and Dr Stuart Gowland will join invited speakers and symposium presenters in a packed program that brings you the very latest in research and clinical practice. In addition to this, the conference itself is sandwiched between a plethora of courses from renowned international teachers including David Butler, Dianne Lee, Duncan Reid, Peter O’Sullivan and many more.

The IFOMPT Conference this year is being hosted in Québec City, Eastern Canada. Condé Nast Traveler readers have listed Québec City amongst the top 10 favorite tourist destinations around the world and first in Canada! European flavour, cobblestone streets, sidewalk cafés, museums and several other attractions are among the treasures waiting for you to discover in beautiful Québec City. Declared as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1985, Québec City is the only city in North America to have preserved its original fortifications. The province of Québec’s capital is known to be one of the safest urban districts of the world ans is a bilingual (French/English) destination.

Registration for this conference is now open. To get your early bird ticket make sure you register before June 4th! Don’t miss this exceptional opportunity to meet colleagues from all over the world who share your interests and enthusiasm for our profession. We look forward to seeing you there!

Evidence In Motion (EIM) is crossing borders to elevate the role of physiotherapy on a global scale. The Evidence In Motion Institute of Health Professions (EIM) a U.S. based educational institution for physical therapists has expanded their offerings into Canada and the Caribbean. EIM provides a Transitional Doctorate of Physical Therapy in Musculoskeletal Management for physiotherapists wishing to bridge their bachelors or masters degree to the doctoral level. The program is delivered using a dynamic blend of didactic, collaborative, and clinical education experiences through online courses, weekend intensive hands-on courses, and clinical practice hours.

“This degree program is an effective way for physiotherapists to keep up with their evolving clinical responsibilities,” says EIM’s Transition DPT Program Director Julie Whitman, PT, DSc. “We’ve developed the curriculum in such a way that the students are not required to commit significant time away from their practices. They can easily balance their education, practice, and personal lives while obtaining their education from leaders in physiotherapy research, clinical practice, education, and private practice management.”

The distance learning model used by EIM, which has proven effective for American physical therapists, has been tailored to meet Canadian and Caribbean physiotherapy requirements and is uniquely flexible. Because the majority of the program is delivered online, the geographic isolation of countries in the Caribbean and many Canadian cities does not encumber the professional development of physiotherapists. EIM’s Transition DPT Program provides an opportunity for practicing professionals to improve their patient care and advance the role of physiotherapy in health care delivery in each Canadian Province and all Caribbean islands.

“Our mission has always been to elevate and expand the role of physiotherapy in the modern health care environment,” states Larry Benz, DPT, MBA, EIM founder and principle. “It’s imperative for our industry to expand post-graduate education and assert ourselves as a doctoring profession on a global scale. EIM’s multinational doctorate program is aligned with our professional responsibility to bridge the gap between the academic setting and clinical practice.”

Questions about EIM’s Transitional Doctorate of Physical Therapy in Musculoskeletal Management can be directed to TDPT@eimpt.com.

Attend a free informational webinar on Wednesday, May 2 at 7pm CT. Register at https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/566355433.

The Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) and Singapore Physiotherapy Association (SPA) have formalised their commitment to strengthen collaboration between the two bodies and their respective physiotherapy workforces in signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the APA’s annual general meeting over the weekend. ‘Both organisations have proud histories, strong membership bases and face similar challenges in providing a broad range of services to increasingly mobile stakeholders. This landmark agreement will help both associations to develop and deliver relevant, products and services within our jurisdictions,’ said APA President Melissa Locke. The three-year MOU centers around a shared belief that physical health and wellbeing of nationals is enhanced by access to quality physiotherapy, and a broader goal to improve population health by supporting members in the provision of world-class, evidence-based clinical practice though professional development and career success. ‘A strong physiotherapy association is the key to a strong physiotherapy profession. The MOU between APA and SPA recognises that together we can do better to achieve our missions. Members, and ultimately the general public, will benefit from economies and industry clout made possible through collaboration,’ continued Ms Locke. ‘Specifically, our agreement will see: enhanced information sharing on policy and advocacy matters; APA’s product endorsement program and selected publications expanded into the Singapore market; discussion of a Specialisation framework for Singapore’s health system; and preferential major event rates offered to members of each organisation. ‘There is a long history of partnership between the physiotherapy workforce in Australia and Singapore, which started with the training of Singaporean physiotherapists in Australia as part of the Colombo Plan and continues to this day with significant movement of individuals between each country for both education and work,’ concluded Ms Locke. A quorum of members witnessed the MOU signing by Ms Locke and visiting Vice-President of SPA, Ms Goh Ming Rong, during the APA’s annual general meeting on Sunday 22 April. Attendees were also treated to a presentation on the Australian Government’s National Lead Clinicians Group by Adjunct Professor Mr Russell Stitz. APA and SPA are both members of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT), the sole international voice for physiotherapy, and belong to one of its largest and most populous geographical regions, the Asia Western Pacific region. In 2015, WCPT Congress, a quadrennial international event, will be hosted in Singapore.

The Evidence In Motion (EIM) Institute for Health Professions is excited to announce a new and improved Manual Physical Therapy Certification. The Certification has been updated to ensure that participants walk away from the program with a certification that provides a competitive edge in the marketplace by allowing them to treat patients with clinical reasoning and manual physical therapy techniques that are supported by the best evidence available.

“The Manual Physical Therapy Certification adds great value to the practicing physical therapist,” states Tim Flynn, PT, PhD, Director of EIM’s Manual Physical Therapy Certification Program and EIM co-founder. “Not only do physical therapists with the certification have better clinical reasoning skills, but they are also able to treat patients more appropriately with their extensive knowledge of the latest manual therapy techniques. This provides a competitive edge when interviewing for jobs, advisory positions, and higher educational programs, and advanced practice opportunities.”

Improvements to the Manual Physical Therapy Certification Program include:

Flexible elective choices

Foundational constructs on patient management and mechanisms of manual therapy

Virtual rounds and case presentations for interactive learning and peer review

Robust examination processes to ensure student mastery of material and manual interventions

A 12 month cohort setting that builds lasting professional relationships with fellow students

Constructive credit / waivers granted for select previously completed certification-level courses

Constructive credit offered for EIM Integrated Soft-Tissue Courses (Trigger Point Dry Needling & Instrumented Soft Tissue Mobilization)

The majority of the Manual Physical Therapy Certification happens wherever participants happen to be. It consists of an intensive combination of didactic, collaborative and laboratory experiences using a blend of distance learning, self-paced and faculty-directed modules, and weekend intensive on-site courses. Students learn from an all-star faculty of leaders in academia, research and practice management.

EIM’s Manual Physical Therapy Certification consists of eight graduate level courses (20 credit hours):

Evidence-based Physical Therapy Practice

Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy Overview: Patient Management Framework

Management of Cervical and Thoracic Disorders

Management of Lumbopelvic Disorders

Management of Lower Extremity Disorders

Management of Upper Extremity Disorders

Virtual Rounds and Case Presentations

Participant chooses between the following electives: Mechanisms of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy and Diagnosis and Management of Chronic Spinal Pain

“The Manual Physical Therapy Certification is the most cost and time effective post-professional educational step physical therapists can make if their goal is become a highly skilled, evidence-based clinician in the area of manual physical therapy,” states Flynn.
EIM offers the Manual Physical Therapy Certification to both U.S. and International physical therapists. The first cohort of the new program will launch in July 2012 and cohorts will begin every January and July following this start date. Applications are available now at EvidenceInMotion.com.

The EIM Manual Physical Therapy Certification is an attractive option for physical therapists who are not seeking the extensive commitment of a Residency or Fellowship Program. Should a participant change their mind and decide to complete a Residency program in the future, the Manual Physical Therapy Certification allows them to apply already earned credit hours towards an EIM Residency Program or to the EIM Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy Fellowship.

Did you know that the as a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) you can sign up to use ClinicServer’s Community Edition of their clinic management software for FREE! It’s not been well promoted and it isn’t that obvious where to find out about it so we have had a quick look around and have all the information for you here.

ClinicServeris a Canadian-based company that provides clinic management software. The first version of ClinicServer was deployed in 1998, making it among the first true Internet applications for physiotherapists in the world. ClinicServer is now widely used with physiotherapists and many other healthcare professional groups to manage their clinic more efficiently. ClinicServer has teamed up with the CSP to provide their membership with a free secure cloud-based appointment diary. This free version is only available through ClinicServer’s Community Edition which has been specially designed to provide physiotherapists in the UK with the ability to increase efficiency and improve their clinic management.

This Community Edition is a secure, web-based clinic management software to manage all aspects of a clinic diary. It is not just managing time to see a patient, it is managing all things that are tied to that clinical visit including managing room bookings and client data. Once you have signed up for an account, which you can do very easily online the system is very easy to use. You can add therapists, add rooms, add clients and then make appropriate bookings for one or more appointments at a time over a variety of locations. The system is then able to send emails out to clients for example, for appointment reminders or email marketing. The data has encrypted data transmission and is stored in securely offsite, all this plus routine backups will let you rest easy that your data is safe and secure.

Coming soon is the additional service offering, PencilThat. It is a powerful self-scheduler, that enables your clients to book and manage their appointments with you from any place, at any time. PencilThat is supported by their web-based software, so that you can also work to manage your business and client appointments at anytime, from any place…even if you have multiple locations and multiple service providers. This new service is designed so you have full control of the appointments you want to have available for your patients to book on their own, on their own time. You also decide which patients you want to have access to this service by sending them an email invitation from your clinic.

If you don’t already have clinic management software this is the perfect opportunity to start using a system that is designed to simplify and store your clinic’s client data and an integrated appointment diary so you have more time to spend on important things like treating your patients and making your clinic grow! If you are looking for more capabilities from your clinica management software, such as invoicing, it is likely that this will be available from ClinicServer’s UK edition in the future.

Sign up for your free version of ClinicServer now!

The purpose of these low back pain clinical practice guidelines, in particular, is to describe the peer-reviewed literature and make recommendations related to (1) treatment matched to low back pain subgroup responder categories, (2) treatments that have evidence to prevent recurrence of low back pain, and (3) treatments that have evidence to influence the progression from acute to chronic low back pain and disability.

We’ve added these to our Clinical Guidelines Resource in Physiopedia where you can see all the clinical guidelines that are available internationally for a variety of conditions. Do you know of any more that we can add to this list?

Today is the UN Day for Mine Action and Mine Awareness, people all over the world will be asked to roll up their trouser legs showing solidarity with survivors of landmines and other explosive remnants of war, calling on the international community to eradicate these weapons for good.

The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) is a global network in over 90 countries that works for a world free of antipersonnel landmines and cluster munitions, where landmine and cluster munition survivors can lead fulfilling lives. The Campaign was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its efforts to bring about the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty. Since then, they have been advocating for the words of the treaty to become a reality, demonstrating on a daily basis that civil society has the power to change the world. The World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) believes that physical therapists play a vital role in dealing with the health problems and functional limitations that are the direct consequence of armed violence and the use of landmines and other weapons of war, even in peace times. Many physical therapists have worked in areas affected by landmines and treated people with amputations or other injuries relating to landmines. Read more on the WCPT policy on “The consequences of armed violence, landmines and other weapons of war“.

So, ‘lend your leg’ today! Join us to to stand with survivors and declare with one voice NO MORE LANDMINES.
