This ‘how to’ guide for end of life care builds upon the overarching framework set out in The route to success in end of life care – achieving quality in acute hospitals, published in 2010. The route to success highlighted best practice models developed by acute hospital Trusts, providing a comprehensive framework to enable hospitals to deliver high quality care to people at the end of life. This ‘how to’ guide aims to help clinicians, managers and directors implement ‘The route to success’ more effectively.

The guidelines have been produced by the National End of Life Care Programme (NEoLCP) in collaboration with the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement. This guide will only improve the way hospitals care for people nearing the end of life if frontline, practical professionals commit to it. Physiotherapists have a crucial role to play in supporting people in the last phase of life, they can make a real difference to improve end of life care.

Ekso, a wearable robot that powers paraplegics up, enabling them to stand and walk. Really? Yes it’s here! Ekso Bionics has recently delivered the ready-to-wear, battery-powered Ekso exoskeleton to its first customer, the Craig Hospital in Denver, an institution dedicated to spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury rehabilitation. Ekso is designed for patients with spinal cord injuries and pathologies that inhibit their ability to walk. It is strapped on to the user over clothing and while the unit weighs in at 45 pounds, this weight is transferred to the ground rather than to the patient. This amazing video demonstrates:

This video, from a FutureMed presentation, features several of the “test pilots” showing off their new found freedom with the robotic legs.

The system can accommodate most patients who weigh 220 or less and who are between 5’2” and 6’2” in height. Rehabilitation centers across the United States are currently completing a ten-month investigational study on 63 subjects who passed a preliminary health screening. We look forward to hearing the results.

WCPT is launching a new online resource for physical therapists from its congress, World Physical Therapy 2011. For the first time, WCPT is offering recordings of some of the most popular focused symposia and discussion panels via the WCPT website. The new materials include video and audio recordings with accompanying PowerPoint presentations. As well as providing an opportunity for those who couldn’t attend the sessions to share in the information and opinion provided, the material is also designed to be of use as a valuable teaching and learning resource. As part of WCPT’s commitment to facilitate information exchange across the profession, they are offered free of charge.

In all, there are 12 recordings available, four providing a complete video recording of selected congress discussion panels on the subjects of:

re-building in conflict and disaster zones

promoting health and preventing disability

physical therapists influencing health policy and service provision

health human resources

There are also eight audio recordings of congress focused symposia with accompanying PowerPoint presentations. Subjects covered include teaching about pain, global physical activity transitions, trends in cardiac rehabilitation, leadership in HIV, evidence based practice, moral action, spinal manipulation and stroke rehabilitation. The new resources add to the existing abstracts, posters and PowerPoint slides of congress presentations already available on the congress section of the WCPT website.

Did you know that students can buy all of the Clinically Relevant apps, that we have previously reviewed, at a 50% reduction. IOn first enquiry it can seem that these apps are a bit expensive, mostly because they compare them to the proliferation of $0.99 apps available in the App Store and Android Market. However, if you take the amount of information you are receiving and realize that for $130 USD (all 4 apps) you are getting information that in traditional textbooks and medium could easily cost 2-3 times that much, it doesn’t seem so expensive anymore. In addition, you don’t have to worry about having an outdated edition a couple years after you buy it. Now, throw in the 50% discount for students and now $65 is a real steal. The catch to this is that the contract is made between the academic institution and Apple directly (Clinically Relevant are not involved). The academic institution only has to buy a minimum to benefit from this deal. A number of institutions are already making use of this offer and buying these apps for their students.
