Hump Day Highlight: Merton

If you haven’t heard of Merton the Improv piano guy, maybe your internet connection has been down for the last year…

He started doing improv of people he met on chat roulette and blew up from there. He’s been on TV and been invited to visit YouTube headquarters a couple times, he’s even done some commercials for T-mobile.

This is him improving to videos of the the Guinness record winners for 2011.

Billy Joel – She’s Got A Way – Week 1

Woohoo! On to the next challenge! This month I’ll be doing She’s Got A Way by Billy Joel. It’s a great song and I hope I can do it justice. This first week is actually just my practice over the weekend so it’s pretty pathetic 🙂 but it’s a good starting point. Enjoy

The Beatles – Let It Be – Week 4 – Final Recording

Well, as much as I love this song, I don’t think I can pull it off after only 2 voice lessons. I got the piano playing down but my voice just isn’t experienced enough to transition between the different octaves smooth enough. I’m working on extending my range and smoothing the transition from Modal to Falsetto voice but it will take some time. Thankfully, the results of the vote to decide on my next song has returned another Billy Joel piece. His vocal range is a lot closer to my own so it will be easier to get that down.

But no matter how bad this sounds, it’s part of the challenge so here it is!

Hump Day Highlight: Jon Schmidt

Hey guys, I’m going to keep this short cos I haven’t been feeling so great this week. That’s also why my progress video isn’t in, but I still have a couple days before the end of the month, officially, so I’ll have it in by then 🙂

Today’s highlight is of a guy that actually grew up around where I live. He’s an excellent pianist and plays for a piano store called Piano Guys about 5 hours from here. Pretty cool to think he lives close to me, even 5 hours close.

Hump Day Highlight: Sungha Jung

Welcome back to another Hump Day Highlight! Today’s highlight is an amazing kid from South Korea. He doesn’t normally do piano pieces (you’ll see why below) but I couldn’t resist when I saw this. And as a bonus today, I’ve included a second video down below of what Sungha is more well known for.

Sungha was born in 1996 and started playing the guitar at age 9. He started posting videos of himself playing on Youtube only shortly after that, and even his first video is amazing. After hearing the song below on the piano, he created an arrangement for guitar also below. I’ve never heard a guitar sound so much like a piano before and am amazed at how well Sungha can play.
