This is the queen of our house, Ella Fitzgerald Everdeen Kennedy III. There’s a story behind her name. It makes little sense so I’ll leave the story up to you.

National Geographic has found that personality can be tied to a cat’s fur color. Orange cats were found to be the most gregarious. They both purr and meow a lot and will always want to be near their favorite human. They are known for being very affectionate and not shy at all about expressing themselves. (link)

This rings true.😺

Enjoyed this look up at the Plaza Lounge ceiling at the Dammam airport in Saudi Arabia on my way to Egypt. First real photo I’ve taken with my new Nikon D850.

I adore my Nikon D810 but its size and weight, plus theft-prone appearance, aren't conducive to a trip around Brazil. Enter the diminutive Sony RX100 IV.

The first two weeks of September I’ll be backpacking around South America with Ryan and a couple of friends. I’m incredibly existed about the opportunity to explore a continent that is totally foreign to me.

And while I’d love to have more time on this trip, I plan to make the most of the break from reality that I get by taking lots of photos, and hopefully a few good ones.

However, the thought of lugging my Nikon D810 and lenses across the countryside had me a bit weary. Not just the weight and size of it all but the likelihood of getting mugged or otherwise losing my gem.

So I went to the Net and searched around for a reasonably-priced solution. I needed something small, light, ambiguous and affordable. That’s when I stumbled up the not-yet-released Sony RX100 IV.

At 20 megapixels it would be a happy medium between my 12 Mp Nikon D700 and 36 Mp Nikon D810. The 24-70mm f 1.8-2.8 equivalent lens would cover the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 lens which is gigantic in size and weight. Plus it shoots 4K video and fits in your jeans pocket.

It’s everything I have ever wanted in a pocket camera. I immediately preordered it on Amazon and can’t wait to see what it can do. There is a chance that I’ll actually have it by the end of this week. How awesome would that be?

Full review will be posted at http://itsjustjustin.com so make sure to check back there for an update!

Cracked dead land which once was rich with life. Just another symptom of the California drought & urban sprawl in a landscape that can't evolve fast enough.

The California landscape has changed dramatically over a few short years. Where was once lush foliage is now cracked ground. Where rivers met the Pacific to form brackish estuaries now lies scorched earth. While some choose to deny climate change, there is no denying the California drought.

And there really is no hope in sight, at least nothing over the horizon. Tomorrow there is a 30% chance of rain but no one is holding their breath. While it might seem we’ve all but given up down here, I’m optimistic that technology will succeed in undoing the damage we have done.

Between desalination plants, dramatic decreases in water use and an assortment of other climate sensitive changes we’ve made, we may just be able to make this work out. Only time will tell. In the meantime I’ll do what I can to capture the effects we’ve had on the landscape. This photo was taken from a construction site that leveled a series of canyons and hills into a flat space ripe for condominiums and strip malls.

And while it’s quite beautiful on the surface, it’s what’s lacking below the surface that’s frightening. Life.

Last weekend I went on a bit of a photo excursion with my friend Kha. It was the first time I’d gone out strictly to take pictures in ages and wow, did it feel good to carry my camera with purpose.

On the other hand, it also made me feel so rusty. Had all these years of studying the art of photography left me? I wandered through parks and shanties trying to find something that caught my eye, something that felt like home.

It wasn’t until the end of the day that I felt I was finally getting the swing of things… under the 805 freeway and in a seemingly abandoned construction zone.

Experienced the second storm from a year living in San Diego. Growing up in Texas we saw storms like this all the time, especially this time of the year. So many fond memories of watching the rain pound the city streets, our barn’s tin roof and even sometimes the Galveston coast. Those were the days. Now I’m in California where thunderstorms are an absolute rarity.

I wish I’d have made the quick trip to the coast to take a picture of the sunset as the storm went to sea but I was too busy drying off after one hell of a downpour. I also wish I’d caught some of the lightning and thunder that shook the building I was in at the moment. We could sure use about a hundred more of these here in Southern California.

There was something about this perfectly restored 1980 Toyota Corolla Coupe that caught my attention away from the beaches of Esperanza Vieques, Puerto Rico. Someone spent a lot of time on this island restoring this car to its original glory. Inside and out this thing looked mint, well except for the missing bumper. Hey, you gotta draw the line somewhere.

So in honor of their work, and the fact that this 33 year old car is even still running on an island full of salty air, I took a picture of it on my last trip out there. There isn’t much more to it. I just loved this car.

A few years ago Ryan and I went to Seattle through a Klout Perk called #2DaysInSeattle. The city of Seattle put us up in a wonderful hotel, gave us $500 in cash and tons of goodies. All we had to do was explore the city and hopefully tweet and share photos on Instagram with their hashtag. My friend Aaron also go this perk so he and his friend Kristin joined us on our adventures through Seattle, with the help of fellow photographer and friend Samuel Avery Hunt. It was an absolute blast.

This photo was taken on one of Ryan and my ventures out together. Ryan read that Kerry Park provided stunning views of the Seattle skyline. I’d say he was right.

It appeared to me as a sweeping landscape as seen from above, as if in a plane flying across a mountain range.

Last October I traveled with San Diego friends to Paso Robles for a weekend of picking grapes, drinking wine and eating a lot of amazing food. We were lucky enough to be invited to stay at Proulx Wines. While technically I only picked one or two bushels of grapes, I like to think I did my part by taking pictures and video of the experience. I even got a chance to taste the wine we made from the grapes. I have to say, I did pretty darn good.
