On the Physical Death of Jesus Christ

Abstract

Jesus of Nazareth underwent Jewish and Roman trials, was flogged, and was sentenced to death by crucifixion. The scourging produced deep stripelike lacerations and appreciable blood loss, and it probably set the stage for hypovolemic shock, as evidenced by the fact that Jesus was too weakened to carry the crossbar (patibulum) to Golgotha. At the site of crucifixion, his wrists were nailed to the patibulum and, after the patibulum was lifted onto the upright post (stipes), his feet were nailed to the stipes. The major pathophysiologic effect of crucifixion was an interference with normal respirations. Accordingly, death resulted primarily from hypovolemic shock and exhaustion asphyxia. Jesus' death was ensured by the thrust of a soldier's spear into his side. Modern medical interpretation of the historical evidence indicates that Jesus was dead when taken down from the cross.

Three guys were nailed to crosses.
Two guys deserved it.

Three guys agonized over their abandonment.
Two guys had reason to be abandoned.

Three guys talked while hanging on their crosses.
Two guys argued.

Three guys knew death was coming.

Do You Believe in Easter?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas. She was the patient of doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people.

His favorite patient was Edith Burns. One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns. When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.

Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.

Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying, "My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"

Beverly said, "Why yes I do." Edith said, "Well, what do you believe about Easter?" Beverly said, "Well, it's all about egg hunts, going to church, and dressing up." Edith kept pressing her about the real meaning of Easter, and finally led her to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Dr. Phillips said, "Beverly, don't call Edith into the office quite yet. I believe there is another delivery taking place in the waiting room.

After being called back in the doctor's office, Edith sat down and when she took a look at the doctor she said, "Dr. Will, why are you so sad? Are you reading your Bible? Are you praying?"

Dr. Phillips said gently, "Edith, I'm the doctor and you're the patient."

With a heavy heart he said, "Your lab report came back and it says you have cancer, and Edith, you're not going to live very long."

Edith said, "Why Will Phillips, shame on you. Why are you so sad? Do you think God makes mistakes? You have just told me I'm going to see my precious Lord Jesus, my husband, and my friends. You have just told me that I am going to celebrate Easter forever, and here you are having difficulty giving me my ticket!"

Dr. Phillips thought to himself, "What a magnificent woman this Edith Burns is!"

Edith continued coming to Dr. Phillips. Christmas came and the office was closed through January 3rd. On the day the office opened, Edith did not show up. Later that afternoon, Edith called Dr. Phillips and said she would have to be moving her story to the hospital and said, "Will, I'm very near home, so would you make sure that they put women in here next to me in my room who need to know about Easter."

Well, they did just that and women began to come in and share that room with Edith. Many women were saved. Everybody on that floor from staff to patients were so excited about Edith, that they started calling her Edith Easter; that is everyone except Phyllis Cross, the head nurse.

Phyllis made it plain that she wanted nothing to do with Edith because she was a "religious nut". She had been a nurse in an army hospital. She had seen it all and heard it all. She was the original G.I. Jane. She had been married three times, she was hard, cold, and did everything by the book.

One morning the two nurses who were to attend to Edith were sick. Edith had the flu and Phyllis Cross had to go in and give her a shot. When she walked in, Edith had a big smile on her face and said, "Phyllis, God loves you and I love you, and I have been praying for you."

Phyllis Cross said, "Well, you can quit praying for me, it won't work. I'm not interested." Edith said, "Well, I will pray and I have asked God not to let me go home until you come into the family."

Phyllis Cross said, "Then you will never die because that will never happen," and curtly walked out of the room.

Every day Phyllis Cross would walk into the room and Edith would say, "God loves you Phyllis and I love you, and I'm praying for you." One day Phyllis Cross said she was literally drawn to Edith's room like a magnet would draw iron. She sat down on the bed and Edith said, "I'm so glad you have come, because God told me that today is your special day."

Phyllis Cross said, "Edith, you have asked everybody here the question, 'Do you believe in Easter?' but you have never asked me." Edith said, "Phyllis, I wanted to many times, but God told me to wait until you asked, and now that you have asked..."

Edith Burns took her Bible and shared with Phyllis Cross the Easter Story of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Edith said, "Phyllis, do you believe in Easter? Do you believe that Jesus Christ is alive and that He wants to live in your heart?" Phyllis Cross said, "Oh I want to believe that with all of my heart, and I do want Jesus in my life." Right there, Phyllis Cross prayed and invited Jesus Christ into her heart. For the first time Phyllis Cross did not walk out of a hospital room, she was carried out on the wings of angels.

Two days later, Phyllis Cross came in and Edith said, "Do you know what day it is?" Phyllis Cross said, "Why Edith, it's Good Friday." Edith said, "Oh, no, for you every day is Easter. Happy Easter Phyllis!"

Two days later, on Easter Sunday, Phyllis Cross came into work, did some of her duties and then went down to the flower shop and got some Easter lilies because she wanted to go up to see Edith and give her some Easter lilies and wish her a Happy Easter. When she walked into Edith's room, Edith was in bed. That big black Bible was on her lap. Her hands were in that Bible. There was a sweet smile on her face.

When Phyllis Cross went to pick up Edith's hand, she realized Edith was dead.

Her left hand was on John 14: "In my Father's house are many mansions. I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also." Her right hand was on Revelation 21:4, " And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes, there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying; and there shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away." Phyllis Cross took one look at that dead body, and then lifted her face toward heaven, and with tears streaming down here cheeks, said, "Happy Easter, Edith - Happy Easter!"

Phyllis Cross left Edith's body, walked out of the room, and over to a table where two student nurses were sitting. She said, "My name is Phyllis Cross. Do you believe in Easter?"

Black Saturday: The Great Sabbath Rest!

No tomb in the world could contain the Lord Jesus for long. His death on the cross purchased our redemption and his triumph over the grave on Easter morning defeated death. The mystery of Christ's lying in the tomb on the sabbath reveals the great sabbath rest of God after the fulfillment of our salvation which brings peace to the whole world (Colossians. 1:18-20).

Holy Saturday

Luke 23:50-56 Now there was a man named Joseph from the Jewish town of Arimathe'a . He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man, 51 who had not consented to their purpose and deed, and he was looking for the kingdom of God . 52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud, and laid him in a rock-hewn tomb, where no one had ever yet been laid. 54 It was the day of Preparation, and the sabbath was beginning. 55 The women who had come with him from Galilee followed, and saw the tomb, and how his body was laid; 56 then they returned, and prepared spices and ointments. On the sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

Jesus not only died for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3); he also, by the grace of God, tasted death for every one (Hebrews 2:9). It was a real death that put an end to his earthly human existence. Jesus died in mid afternoon and the Sabbath began at 6:00 pm. Since the Jewish law permitted no work on the Sabbath, the body had to be buried quickly. Someone brave enough would have to get permission from the Roman authorities to take the body and bury it.

The bodies of executed criminals were usually left unburied as carion for the vultures and dogs. Jesus was spared this indignity through the gracious intervention of Joseph of Arimethea. Who was this admirer and secret disciple of Jesus? Luke tells us that Joseph was a member of the Sanhedrin, the supreme Jewish council that condemned Jesus. We are told that he did not agree with their verdict. He was either absent from their meeting or silent when they tried Jesus. What kind of man was Joseph? Luke tells us that he was "good and righteous" and "looking for the kingdom of God ".

Although he did not stand up for Jesus at his trial, he nonetheless, sought to honor him in his death by giving him a proper burial. This was to fulfill what the prophet Isaiah had foretold: "He was cut off out of the land of the living ..and they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth" (Isaiah 53:8-9).

In the Book of Revelations, the Lord Jesus speaks: "Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one: I died, and behold I am alive for evermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades" (Revelations 1:17-18). No tomb in the world could contain the Lord Jesus for long. His death on the cross purchased our redemption and his triumph over the grave on Easter morning defeated death. What preserved the Lord Jesus from corruption?

He was kept from decay and he rose from the dead by divine power. "My flesh will dwell in hope. For you will not let your Holy One see corruption" (Psalm 16:9-10). The mystery of Christ's lying in the tomb on the sabbath reveals the great sabbath rest of God after the fulfillment of our salvation which brings peace to the whole world (Colossians. 1:18-20). Is your hope in this life only, or is it well founded in the resurrection of Christ and his promise that those who believe in him will live forever?

"Lord Jesus, you died that I might live forever in your kingdom of peace and righteousness. Strengthen my faith that I may I know the power of your resurrection and live in the hope of seeing you face to face for ever."

Good Friday: What Makes This Friday Good?

Allow your heart to be touched and your world to be shook by this breathless and unbelievable account of the demonstration of God's love for us revealed in the self-giving love of Jesus. Be with Him in His suffering as a dearly beloved friend. Nothing more important than that should absorb our attention today. "Were you there when they crucified my Lord?"

Good Friday of the Lord's Passion

A visitor to planet earth from another planet or dimension might find it very puzzling that a group of earthlings would call this Friday "Good." An innocent and very loving person is arrested, tortured, condemned and executed in a horribly painful manner by state and religious leaders -- you call that Good? And we could answer emphatically, "Yes, even more than "Good," we call it the best Friday ever. And it lasts forever. Would today's readings convince him of our claim?

It would certainly help. This solemn celebration of the Lord's Passion and Death draws on the tradition of a mysterious Servant, One who suffers terribly on our behalf, almost a corporate personality, whose suffering and death on our behalf is the source of our healing, our recovery, our return to Paradise . Even though this description in Isaiah 52 and 53 of the Suffering Servant can stand in its own right and apply to any person who gives her life for others, the first Christians clearly saw in it a pre-figuring of the Passion and death of Jesus. So can we, even today. To read this sacred text before a crucifix is to pray as accurately and fully as we possibly can about the meaning of this day, this good Friday.

The psalm too, echoing as it does some of the final words of Jesus, can help us continue this prayer, as well as the reading from HEBREWS, which is a summary of the priesthood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and the summarizing prayer of believers in the eternal salvation His death purchased for us "with loud cries and tears." "So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help."

But, above all, reading John's account of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ is the preferred way of praying today for all "who hold fast to our confession" of faith in Jesus as our personal and universal Savior. Take time to read the words carefully, to reflect on them deeply, to try and visualize, imagine, and make present this, the central Mystery of our faith.

Holy Thursday: Stooped to Serve!

In stooping to serve his disciples Jesus knew he would be betrayed by one of them and that the rest would abandon him through disloyalty. Such knowledge could have easily led to bitterness or hatred. The Lord loves each of us unconditionally. His love has power to set us free to serve others with Christ-like compassion and humility. Does the love of Christ rule in your heart, thoughts, intentions and actions?

Does your love waver when you encounter bitter disappointments and injury from others? As Jesus' hour of humiliation draws near he reveals to his disciples the supreme humility which shaped the love he had for them. He stoops to perform a menial task reserved for servants - the washing of smelly, dirty feet. In stooping to serve his disciples Jesus knew he would be betrayed by one of them and that the rest would abandon him through disloyalty. Such knowledge could have easily led to bitterness or hatred. Jesus met the injury of betrayal and disloyalty with the greatest humility and supreme love. Jesus loved his disciples to the very end, even when they failed him and forsook him. The Lord loves each of us unconditionally. His love has power to set us free to serve others with Christ-like compassion and humility. Does the love of Christ rule in your heart, thoughts, intentions and actions?

Saint Augustine in his sermon for this day, wrote: "He had the power of laying down his life; we by contrast cannot choose the length of our lives, and we die even if it is against our will. He, by dying, destroyed death in himself; we are freed from death only in his death. His body did not see corruption; our body will see corruption and only then be clothed through him in incorruption at the end of the world. He needed no help from us in saving us; without him we can do nothing. He gave himself to us as the vine to the branches; apart from him we cannot have life. Finally, even if brothers die for brothers, yet no martyr by shedding his blood brings forgiveness for the sins of his brothers, as Christ brought forgiveness to us. In this he gave us, not an example to imitate but a reason for rejoicing. Inasmuch, then, as they shed their blood for their brothers, the martyrs provided "the same kind of meal" as they had received at the Lord's table.

Let us then love one another as Christ also loved us and gave himself up for us.

"Lord Jesus, your love conquers all and never fails. Help me to love others freely, with heart-felt compassion , kindness and goodness. Where there is injury, may I sow peace rather than strife."

Holy Wednesday: Why Did Judas Betray Jesus?

Wednesday of Holy Week

Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, "What will you give me if I deliver him to you?" And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him. 17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?" 18 He said, "Go into the city to a certain one, and say to him, `The Teacher says, My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.'" 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover. 20 When it was evening, he sat at table with the twelve disciples; 21 and as they were eating, he said, "Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me." 22 And they were very sorrowful, and began to say to him one after another, "Is it I, Lord?" 23 He answered, "He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me, will betray me. 24 The Son of man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born." 25 Judas, who betrayed him, said, "Is it I, Master?" He said to him, "You have said so."

Why did Judas betray his Master? Was his treachery motivated by greed, bitter disappointment with Jesus, or hatred because of disillusionment? It may be that Judas never intended for his Master to die. Maybe he thought Jesus was proceeding too slowly and not acting aggressively enough in setting up his messianic kingdom. Perhaps Judas wanted to force Jesus' hand by compelling him to act. Nonetheless, his tragedy was his refusal to accept Jesus as he was.

Origen, a 3rd century bible scholar and church father, comments on Judas' betrayal: Let us consider what Judas said to the Jewish priests: What will you give me if I hand him over to you? He was willing to take money in exchange for handing over the Word of God. They do the same thing who accept sensual or worldly goods in exchange for handing over and casting out from their souls the Savior and Word of truth who came to dwell with them. Indeed, it would be fitting to apply Judas's example to all who show contempt for the Word of God and betray him, as it were, by committing sin for the sake of money or for any selfish motive.

People who behave in this way appear openly to be calling out to the powers of the enemy who offer worldly gain in return for the sin of betraying God's Word, saying, What will you give me if I hand him over to you? And they gave him thirty pieces of silver. The number of coins they gave Judas was equivalent to the number of years the Savior had sojourned in this world. For at the age of thirty, he was baptized and began to preach the gospel, like Joseph was thirty years old when he began to gather grain for his brothers (Genesis 41:46). Just as at that time the grain was prepared by God for the sons of Israel but given also to the Egyptians, so also the gospel was prepared for the saints but preached also to the unfaithful and wicked. Jesus knew beforehand what would befall him. As Jesus ate the passover meal with his twelve apostles he put them under trial and suspicion (one of you will betray me) to teach them to examine themselves rightly, lest they be highminded and think themselves more strong than they were. We, also must examine ourselves in the light of God's truth and grace and ask him to strengthen us in faith, hope, and love that we may not fail him or forsake him when we are tempted. Do you pray with confidence in the words Jesus gave us to pray: Do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil (Matthew 6:13)?

Holy Tuesday: Steadfast, Unconquered, and Upright

Jesus' disciples were put to the test as Jesus prepared to make the final and ultimate sacrifice of his own life for their sake and for all the world. What was different between Peter and Judas? Judas deliberately betrayed his Master while Peter, in a moment of weakness, denied him with an oath and a curse. Judas' act was cold and calculated. Peter, however, never meant to do what he did. He acted impulsively, out of weakness and cowardice. Jesus knew both the strength of Peter's loyalty and the weakness of his resolution. He had a habit of speaking with his heart without thinking through the implications of what he was saying.

The treachery of Judas, however, is seen at its worst when Jesus makes his appeal by showing special affection to him at his last supper. John says that Satan entered into Judas when he rejected Jesus and left to pursue his evil course. Satan can twist love and turn it into hate. He can turn holiness into pride, discipline into cruelty, affection into complacency. We must be on our guard lest Satan turn us from the love of God and the path which God has chosen for us. The Holy Spirit will give us grace and strength in our time of testing. If we submit to Jesus we will walk in the light of his truth and love. If we turn our backs on him we will stumble and fall in the ways of sin and darkness. Are you ready to follow Jesus in his way of the cross?

Holy Monday: Motives Matter

The greatest temptation we can face will often come in the area of our greatest strength or gifting. Judas used money entrusted to him for wrong and hurtful purposes. He allowed greed and personal gain to corrupt his heart and to warp his view of things. He was critical towards Mary because he imputed unworthy motives. This week, let's examine our hearts for any wrong or unworthy motives towards others. GOD BLESS!

Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany , where Laz'arus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 There they made him a supper; Martha served, and Laz'arus was one of those at table with him. 3 Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was to betray him), said, 5 "Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it. 7 Jesus said, "Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. 8 The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me." 9 When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Laz'arus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests planned to put Laz'arus also to death, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. 12 The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem .

Do you know the love that knows no bounds? As Jesus dines with his beloved friends, Mary does something which only love can do. She took the most precious thing she had and spent it all on Jesus. Her love was not calculated but extravagant. Mary's action was motivated by one thing, and one thing only, namely, her love for Jesus and her gratitude for God's mercy. She did something, however, a Jewish woman would never do in public. She loosed her hair and anointed Jesus with her tears. It was customary for a woman on her wedding day to bound her hair. For a married woman to loosen her hair in public was a sign of grave immodesty. Mary was oblivious to all around her, except for Jesus. She took no thought for what others would think, but what would please her Lord. In humility she stooped to anoint Jesus' feet and to dry them with her hair. How do you anoint the Lord's feet and show him your love and gratitude?

The gospel records that the whole house was filled with the perfume of the ointment. What Mary had done brought sweetness not only in the physical sense, but the spiritual sense as well. Her lovely deed shows the extravagance of love - a love that we cannot outmatch. The Lord Jesus showed us the extravagance of his love in giving the best he had by pouring out his own blood for our sake and by anointing us with his Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul says that nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:39). Do you allow the love of Christ to rule in all your thoughts and intentions, and in all your words and deeds?

Why was Judas critical of Mary's lovely deed? Judas viewed her act as extravagant wastefulness because of greed. A person views things according to what it inside the heart and soul. Judas was an embittered man and had a warped sense of what was precious and valuable, especially to God. Jesus had put Judas in charge of their common purse, no doubt because he was gifted in financial matters. The greatest temptation we can face will often come in the area of our greatest strength or gifting. Judas used money entrusted to him for wrong and hurtful purposes. Do you examine your heart correctly when you impute wrong or unworthy motives towards others?

Love deeply.
Walk barefoot.
Dance with wild abandon.
Cry at the movies.

Take care of yourself. Don’t wait for someone to take care of you.
You light up your life.

You drive yourself to your destination.
No one completes you – except YOU.

It isn’t true that life does not get easier with age.
It only gets more challenging.

PERSISTENCE

I believe there are three kinds of people. There are winners, who know what they want and understand their potential and the possibilities. They take life on. Next are losers, who don’t have a clue as to who they are. They allow circumstances to shape their lives and their self-image.

I believe there is a third group as well. This consists of potential winners whose lives are just slightly out of alignment. I call them “wayward winners.” It may be that they just need to learn how to be real winners. Perhaps they’ve hit a bump or two that has knocked them off course and they are temporarily befuddled. A failed relationship, a lost job, financial problems, unformed goals, a lack of parental support, illness—many things can send us off course temporarily.

Wayward winners are not lost souls; they just need some tweaking and coaching and nudging to get them back on course. A map might be nice. Many of these wayward winners are easily identifiable because they are always searching.

Right now, there are many wayward winners out there braving rain, sleet and snow because they, too, still believe that they have untapped talents. They attend motivational seminars and listen to inspirational tapes, and they plunge onward, believing that, sooner or later, they will find their way again.

Other wayward winners have temporarily given up. They are damaged and disoriented, their confidence badly eroded. They tend to drift through life numbly. The friends and relatives and loved ones of wayward winners see that they are out of sync and wonder why they can’t be satisfied, why they won’t settle down. They wonder how people who have such obvious abilities and great potential can be so disoriented and unsure.

It is difficult for others to understand the rawness of a broken heart or the aching emptiness of an unguided spirit. You and I know—we have been there. Wayward winners know that there are possibilities out there, but too often, they feel locked out from them. Some are afraid to risk any more because of what they have risked and lost already.

I know now that as difficult as it may be for you wayward winners to do, it is necessary to continue to test yourselves. Even though you have been hurt before, it is the only way to grow. We all have the capacity to change, to lead meaningful and productive lives by awakening our consciousness.

You know there will be tough times as you go change your life, so brace yourself, and you will be able to handle them. When you get into your seat on an airplane, what is the first thing they tell you to do? Fasten your seat belt. Brace yourself for the turbulence.

When you decide to move your life to the next level of accomplishment, you must fasten your mental and spiritual seat belts because it is going to be a while before you reach that comfortable level again. You will reach it, but you must endure the turbulence of change in order to grow.

Try this technique to help you through the difficult times of change and growth. Find four reasons why you cannot succumb to your fears and your troubles. Find those deep sources of motivation that can lift you out of the turbulence and above the clouds. You must change your life because:

You have not yet tapped the talents given to you.
You want to leave something more for your children.
You want to live life rather than let life live you.
You want to do what makes YOU happy.

It is in these rocky early moments of bringing change to your life that you discover who you are. In the prosperous times, you build what is in your pocket. In the tough times, you strengthen what is in your heart. And that is when you gain insight into yourself, insight that leads to self-mastery and an expansion of your consciousness as a life force in both your personal and professional lives.

Why Should You Give Valentines Day Flowers?

For hundreds of years people have been celebrating Valentines Day, giving flowers or candles to each other as a sign of their affection and friendship. There are so many stories flooding the Internet, and probably offline as well, about how Valentines Day came to be and who started all these traditions.

Well, in a nutshell, eight hundred years before the actual Valentines Day celebration was established and celebrated every February 14, an actual person named Valentine lived and stood in defense of love - even to the point of death. It was still the time when the Romans were in power, and Claudius was the emperor, when the foolish notion of banning marriages came to be for the simple fact that it made poor soldiers out of married men. Valentine, a devout Christian (who were still persecuted during those times), secretly married couples who sought his help. Alas, he was soon discovered, stoned for his efforts and beheaded for what he believed in -- all for the glory of love!

Over the centuries, various practices where adapted by lovers across the globe, all of which were creative expressions of the affection and love. A good example is the wooden love spoons from Wales given as gifts that meant unlocking someone’s heart. The Middle Ages and eventually the Renaissance saw a rash of more traditions, including the practice of putting the names of their valentines on hearts pinned on their sleeves and worn for a week. Other practices include gifts of clothing from a man to a woman, acceptance of which would mean a willingness to marry.

In modern times, the practice of giving candies, flowers and cards filled with love-images like hearts and lips are still prevalent and are favorite gift items given during Valentines Day. These simple gifts is a great way of showing how much the person meant to someone in a creative and meaningful way that would surely brighten up anyone’s day.

However, just remember that when giving someone such gifts, it would be better to do it personally so you can say what you mean to say in a more personal and more meaningful manner.

Twilight, Flowers and a Love to Remember

This is a long read, but well worth it......

It's a simple story of how love can be so eternal... about how it can be transcending even beyond death.... I'm sure the all you "Twilight" fans would love to read stuff like this.

Speaking of "Twilight" and the upcoming Valentine's Day festivities, people still are in a mad scramble to get the ultimate Valentine's day gifts - despite the jacked-up prices that most vendors put on their wares. This is exactly what was described in an article from MSNBC. Still, there are reputable vendors out there like 1800Flowers who give transparent and honest pricing schemes for their clientele - Valentine's day or not.

And they even came up with a great flower-gift bundle that 'Twilight" fans would surely love (as you'll find out below).

But first, read the story below about a love that is worth remembering... a love that goes beyond all boundaries.

Sometimes, we don't see the people the way we must see them. There's something special about this person but we don't give importance to that. Leading us to treat that person the way they didn't deserve. And as the saying goes, you cannot understand the importance of something until it is gone forever... and will never come back... As I lay my head into the soft pillow of my bed, memories flooded into me. Memories flashed back like an old movie. I guess, it is in my fate to look back, to reminisce. My old bones already failed me so I have to do it here in my bed. And as I close my eyes, it came, the happiest and the saddest memories of my life. I became 19 again, strong and full of confidence.

I stare at a very beautiful girl walking toward me. She's everything a man could want for a girl. I watched her brown hair moved gently along the wind. Her soulful eyes were sparkling as she had a glimpse of me. She's really beautiful! She's totally nice, sweet and cool. I'm so lucky to have her! God! How I love this lady!

"Hi! Am I late?" she kissed my cheek. I looked into her eyes. I always love looking into her soulful eyes.

"Nah. It's ok." I said.

"So what's up? Where are we up to?" she asked me as she sit beside me.

"I don't know. Do you have any suggestions?"

"Mmm. There's a good movie in the mall today. Wanna go? Then maybe we could eat some ice cream. I miss Andy's strawberry ice cream already." She said in reply.

Yes. How can I forget! Strawberry ice cream is her favorite.

"Oh well. Let's go then." I held her hand and we walked to my car. We drove to the one only mall during that time. We watched a very good movie. Inside the movie house, I kissed her lips. She didn't refuse. This is not the first time we kissed but there's something different now. I couldn't figure out what is it.

After the movie, we ate ice cream. She looked like a child when our ice cream was served. It's one of the characteristics that I love. She's not materialistic. She's so down to earth. Our relationship continues. Everyday, my love for her grows. But one day, my father needs to move to other city because of work. It's not so far from our place. It's just three cities away. So the entire family has to move there too.

"Do you really have to go?" Helen said. Her eyes were still beautiful, but this time, sadness is visible in it.

"Yeah I'm sorry. But don't worry. I'll drive here at least thrice a week. It's just three cities away anyway." I said. I don't want to see her like that. "Is that a promise?"

"I promise." I cupped her face and notice that her lips were pale. And I could trace pain into her eyes, but she's hiding it.

"Are you eating enough? You look pale." I said.

"Oh! This! It's nothing; I'm just sad because you're leaving." Then she bit her lips.

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah." She answered.

We were walking along the park holding hands. Her hands were cold. But it's cold anyway. Her lips were pale again. 'She's just sad', I said to myself.

"Jack." She called.

"Mmm?"

"I love you so much... take care of yourself for me ok?"

"Yeah I will." I kissed her and she kissed back. It's long and as if we'll never kiss again.

Days passed. It became week. Weeks became months. It was three months ago, I have adapted easily in my new place. I have new friends, new school and new lifestyle. But then again, I didn't forget my promise to visit Helen thrice a week. And I never failed to call her every night. I can say that our relationship is still smooth.

Another 2 months passed... but this time, it's different. I became busy with my new friends. We go out almost every night. I'm still calling Helen but for just a minute. And my visit was lessened. From three times, it became twice, then once and often times, none at all. But still, she understands.

I was talking to her one time on the phone. "I miss you Jack. Can you find time to visit me?" she said to me.

"Oh sweetie, I'm sorry. I'm too busy right now. I have to finish my school project. Actually, I have to do it now. I'm so sorry." I said.

"Oh! It's ok. I understand... just take your time."

"Thank you for understanding me Helen, I'm going to make it up for you. I promise." I told her. "You don't have to thank me Jack, I love you and I'll always understand you. And besides, you have to put studies as your first priority, not me."

"No. You're the first in my list of priorities Helen. I love you." And then we hung up.

Days passed again so rapidly. But still, I didn't find time to visit my Helen. "I thought you understand?! Can't you see I'm busy?! You don't have to ask me that! You've done that a million times now for God's sake!" I said angrily one time. She asked me again to visit her.

"Look here Helen. I know my obligations to you alright? You don't have to remind me of that! I told you, if I find time, I'll visit you. Can't you understand that?" I continued.

"I'm sorry Jack. Yeah of course I understand. I'm sorry." She said apologetically. Then we hung up. I'm still furious. Since then, I'm always irritated. We always have an argument. But each time it happens, she never let the night die without saying sorry. And she's always forgiven.

One time she said to me in a very low and soft voice. "I'm not asking you to visit me now Jack. I know you're too busy. Just see me when you feel like going. Just tell me. You'll fond me very easily Jack. I'm always waiting for you. Just come whenever you want."

Once again, I'm irritated.

"You're talking as if you're not studying! How can you say that huh?! Look, I'm studying, and so are you! If you don't want to study then fine! Just leave me out of that because I don't want your parents to blame me. You're always available huh?!"

Usually, when my voice is like that, an argument will burst out. But this time, she remained calm.

"Yes Jack, always available. Goodbye for now Jack. I love you so until my dying day."

That night, I had a dream. I'm still in my bed and Helen visited me. She kissed my lips and said: "I love you Jack. I love you till my last breath."

She's in a white dress without slippers. She turned her back from me and started to walk away. I'm calling her but she can't hear me. She continues walking and finally, she's gone. I woke up catching my breath. It seemed so real!

God! And then something strikes me. “Yes! I love her! I really love her! She's so dear and precious to me! I shouldn't have treated her that way! She deserved more than that!'

I ran to the phone and dialed her number. I think it's already 2:00 AM. I'm not thinking of the time. All I'm thinking of that moment is Helen and how am I going to say sorry. 'She will not get angry though. She loves me! I know she love me that's why she always understands me.'

Somebody answered the phone but it's not Helen. I talked to her and asked her who she is. "I'm Helen's nurse." She said.

'Nurse!? Why on earth did she have a nurse?' I asked furiously to myself.

After talking to the nurse, I'm not myself anymore. My eyes were focused to nothing. For a while, I don't know what to do. But then I came to my senses. I scribble down a note to my parents and hurried down to the garage. My car nearly flies to Helen's house.

When I got there, I knocked like hell to their front door. Somebody answered the door and maybe she's Helen's nurse.

"You're Jack?" she asked.

"Yes. Where's Helen? I need to see her now!"

"They rushed her to the hospital a minute ago. You have to come with me. She said she wants to see you." She said.

"Ok! Let's use my car. Get in there! Move fast!" I said impatiently. 'God! God please save my Helen!'

While driving, I was praying so hard. I never prayed this hard before. "Hey nurse! What's her room number?!"

"Oh! 209..." she replied. I hurried to room 209. I knocked on the door and it bursts open.

Helen was there. She's very, very pale. Her soulful eyes can't hide the pain she's suffering. Her eyes were not sparkling anymore. I don't want to see her that way!

"You came. I'm so glad you came." She said in a very low voice. Like the one he has when we're talking on the phone.

"Yes. Of course, Helen." I said, forcing myself not to cry. Her parents, knowing the solemnity of this moment for us, leave.

"Thank you for your time Jack. I really appreciate it"

"Why didn't you tell me Helen? I was supposed to know that from the very start."

"I love you Jack. I don't want to bother you. I always want you to be happy. You know how much I love you Jack. I'll give you everything if you give me a chance."

"Oh Helen! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! I'm so sorry!" I held her hand. It was very cold. I was crying hard. I couldn't help it.

"Don't cry Jack. It's ok. Can we dance?" she asked.

"What? Helen, you're very weak. You can't." I don't want to turn her down again but I have to. She's very pale.

"No. Jack please? This is my last request from you. This is my greatest dream, to die in your arms. You're the only person I treasure above all, next to God, next to my family."

"Helen!" I help her to stand. I held her body next to mine. She's very thin! She rests her head into my chest and whisper.

"Jack, I remember the only time you gave me flowers. That was Valentine's Day. I was so happy that day, Jack. But you didn't send me flowers anymore after that. I wish I have received more flowers from you."

"I'm sorry, Helen. If I have known...

"Don't be sorry, Jack. I wouldn't tell you about that anyway. I would prefer to receive those flowers because you want to give it to me, not because I asked you to. I love you, Jack. I will die happily because you're by my side..." she hugged me a little tighter.

"Helen, please. Please fight for me. I'm so sorry for all the pain. I can't live without you." I said in a misty voice.

"Don't cry, Jack. Please don't. I don't want to see you cry... please? And it's too late. I'm dying. I know it. Angels are coming now Jack. I love you so much. Goodbye."

She kissed my lips and rests her head again. Her embrace loosen. And she left with a smile in her face...

"Helen!!!" I cried so hard. I hugged her dead body so tight. I don't want to let go. She's a precious gem. 'How dare me to treat her that way! She's my life! Now I'm lost. My Helen's gone. She left me. And I know it's my entire fault.'

Tears flooded in my eyes. I became 59 again. I still cry whenever I remember that moment. I still love her. I still do. I didn't bother to find another girl to love. Helen's memories are enough. She's all I want. Helen died of cancer. When they found out all about this, it's already malignant, no cure. She knows it from the very start but she pretended to be ok. She doesn't want to bother me.

After Helen's death, I moved to our old place. I moved away from my parents to be near Helen's memories. I continued to study of course, got a job and retired. I bought Andy's Ice Cream Parlor when it's about to be closed. My Helen wouldn't want to see it closed.

Thrice a week, I'll visit her tomb. Bring her flowers like she wished before. And everyday, I have a strawberry ice cream beside my bed, but I'm not eating it. It's for my Helen. People call me a fool but I don't care.

And now, my wish will come true, finally. I'm dying. I'm too old anyway. After the moment I've shared with Helen, dying will be the happiest moment of my life. I will be with my love, finally.

And yes, Helen was right. I could easily find her. Her tombstone will be just, one block away from mine....

Mean What You Say... Say It With Flowers

BRATINELLA and ME @ RHTV

A couple of weeks ago, I guested anew in a radio/TV show discussing alternative dispute resolution, human rights, and my urban farm. We had a fun and wacky evening, together with my partner at BRATINELLA and ME as we shared our antics and laughter with the host of the show.

One thing I learned though from the show is on how important communication is, not only to avoid disputes between neighbors and people in society, but even among partners (lovers, husbands and wives, friends). As my partner always say -- it all boils down not to what you are saying but on how you are saying it that matters. A lot of disputes and misunderstanding can be avoided if you say things properly in a Clear, Precise and Concise manner.

Valentine's Day Roses from 1800Flowers

Valentine's Day is fast approaching and everyone's scrambling to look for elegant gift ideas to give on this special (well, at least for those who have someone to give something to anyway). Well, all I can say is enough of the fancy stuff. Say what you really mean to say to your partner and make it more meaningful by giving a bloom or two... heck, give her a whole bouquet of her favorite flowers and I'm sure you'll certainly delight her in so many ways.

Surprise her with an unexpected delivery at the office or at home with a fresh bouquet of amazing blooms. Well... it would also be a lot better if you give the bouquet yourself... down on your knees... just like the day you made that proposal.

The key thing here is to be creative in how you say things... and make the simplest of words more meaningful and more memorable.

Alex Crisses and Insight Venture Partners: Making Mind Matters Work

Education is a very important aspect in the development of an individual. Having a good foundation in education can be a critical determining factor of how that particular individual could be successful in the future.

But not all people or families have the resources they need to make education an integral part of their lives. Pressures from society, the economic downturns plaguing communities, and family situations make it difficult for some individuals, particularly young high school and college students, to gain the education they need to get ahead in their lives. This is particularly true not only in developing countries but even in well-established nations like the United States.

That is why I was so amazed when I read about volunteer educational programs such as Minds Matter which made quite an impact in helping high school students reach their goals and dreams in their education. Mentors and volunteers like Alex Crisses and affiliate companies like Insight Venture Partners have made such programs possible in helping students achieve academic excellence to help them prepare for their future.

This mentor-student structure that Minds Matter utilize can be a good model for other communities, and other nations for that matter, to follow in developing their own education enhancement programs. I'm sure there are other good-natured people out there with the same heart as Alex Crisses and the other volunteers in Minds Matter who are willing to contribute their time, talent and treasure in making a big impact in the lives of these students - and the nation as a whole.

Christmas Gift Giving @ Calangay Elementary School

Last Saturday, I just had a wonderful opportunity to be with a group of very generous people who spent a perfect day with 190 kids at the Calangay Elementary School in Sta. Maria. Laguna. These people were kind-hearted, low-profile but highly-influential individuals involved in nation building through values education and character development -- and were willing to share their time, talent and treasure for the people of this flood-damaged community.

These individuals chose to brave the stubborn weekend traffic -- typical in Pasig, Cainta and Antipolo where our route took us but several times compounded as the holidays rushed in -- and spend a perfect day and good weather with the children and people of this community -- slowly picking themselves up from the ravages of Typhoon Ondoy.

Sta. Maria and other towns in this area were heavily affected by the ordeal as flash floods had people fleeing to the mountains -- saving only their lives and the clothes on their backs. Their houses were swept away, crops were destroyed, and school buildings such as the one in Calangay Elementary School turned to rubble. Despite that, they were still grateful that the flooding occurred during the daytime as more lives could have been lost if the incident occurred during the night.

The community is slowly picking itself up through the help of these kind-hearted and very generous souls -- all quick to help but never in a hurry to broadcast these 'projects' as a spectacle for the world to see -- and they wanted to give more. With the help of the teachers, school officials and volunteer parents, a Christmas party and gift-giving session was held -- a simple event that would bring great joy for the children and the rest of the community -- these children, parents and teachers who walk at least 5 miles a day on dirt and gravel roads just to go to school.

Games, dance numbers, and more games -- all the children squealed with delight. The cacophony of joyful sound was brought a notch higher as the birthday cakes were brought out to the delight of the celebrants for the holiday months -- and of course, to the delight of the other kids as well who each got a piece of these delicious cakes.

The kids were awestruck by the volume and types of toys and other goodies they received that day. Pockets lined with candies, various toys in each hand, and a grateful smile on their faces -- all kids went back to their own homes thankful on how the events for the day descended on their simple lives.

Receiving the gratitude of the teachers and parents as well as the priceless joy seen on the faces of the children, our group headed back to our transport -- all eager to come back to the place and share more of our time, talent and treasure for this community.

As we headed back to our urban abodes, not even the horrendous traffic dampened the sheer joy and satisfaction that was in the hearts of each member of our group. Everyone enjoyed the trip and experience and couldn't wait for the next schedule to come. As our vehicle zigzagged through the steep mountain trail going back to Antipolo and through the heavy traffic in Cainta and Pasig -- it got me thinking as to who received the bigger sense of gratification from it all -- the kids or us.

I'm sure I did -- and a big portion at that!

As a budding entrepreneur involved in Entrepreneurial movements and organizations in the country, I’ve often been asked about what would be the most important thing that any start up company should have. Divine order takes charge of my life today and every day. All things work together for good for me today. This is a new and wonderful day for me. There will never be another day like this one. I am divinely guided all day long, and whatever I do will prosper. Divine love surrounds me, enfolds me, and enwraps me, and I go forth in peace.

Whenever my attention wanders away from that which is good and constructive, I will immediately bring it back to the contemplation of that which is lovely and of good report. I am a spiritual and mental magnet attracting to myself all things that bless and prosper me. I am going to be a wonderful success in all my undertakings today. I am definitely going to be happy all day long.

I am happy! I enjoy the good life. Regardless of the storms and problems of life, I am happy. Joy is within me even in the midst of the cold, hard winters if life. There is within me an invincible summer.

LIFE IS AN ECHO

A son and his father were walking in the mountains. Suddenly, his son falls, hurts himself and screams: "AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"

To his surprise, hears the voice repeating, somewhere in the mountain: "AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"

Curious, he yells: "Who are you?"

He receives the answer: "Who are you?"

Angered at the response, he screams: "Coward!"

He receives the answer: "Coward!"

He looks to his father and asks: "What's going on?"

The father smiles and says: "My son, pay attention." And then he screams to the mountain: "I admire you!"

The voice answers: "I admire you!"

Again the man screams: "You are a champion!"

The voice answers: "You are a champion!"

The boy is surprised, but does not understand. Then the father explains: "People call this echo, but really this is life. It gives you back everything you say or do."

Our life is simply a reflection of our actions. If you want more love in the world, create more love in your heart. If you want more competence in your team, improve your competence.

This relationship applies to everything, in all aspect of life; life will give you back everything you have given to it.

YOUR ACTIONS MAY CHANGE A LIFE

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd." I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.

As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes. My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks. They really should get lives."

He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!" There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.

I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before now. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before. We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes. We hung all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. And my friends thought the same of him.

Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said, "boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!" He just laughed and handed me half the books.

Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seniors, began to think about college. Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I was going to Duke. I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem. He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship. Kyle was valedictorian of our class. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a speech for graduation. I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak.

Graduation day, I saw Kyle. He looked great. He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school. He filled out and actually looked good in glasses. He had more dates than me and all the girls loved him! Boy, sometimes I was jealous. Today was one of those days.

I could see that he was nervous about his speech. So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey,
big guy, you'll be great!" He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled. "Thanks," he said.

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began: "Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them. I am going to tell you a story."

I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. "Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his mom and dad looking at me smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.

Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person's life. For better or for worse. God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way. Look for God in others.

DADDY IS DRIVING

A speaker (Dr. Wan) has once shared his experience:

While his family and he were in Europe, there was once that they need to drive 3 days continuously, day and night, to get to Germany. So, they all got into the car -- he, his wife, and his 3 years old daughter.

His little daughter has never traveled at night before. She was scared the first night in the car, with deep darkness outside.

"Where are we going, Daddy?" "To your uncle's house, in Germany."

"Have you been to his house before?" "No."

"Then, do you know the way?" "Maybe, we can read the map."

Short pause. "Do you know how to read the map?" "Yes, we will get there safely."

Another pause. "Where are we going to eat if we get hungry before arriving?"
"We can stop by restaurants if we are hungry."

"Do you know if there are restaurants on the way?" "Yes, there are."

"Do you know where?" "No, but we will be able to find some."

The same dialogue repeated a few times within the first night, and also the second night. But on the third night, his daughter was quiet. The speaker thought that she might have fallen asleep, but when he looked into the mirror, he saw that she was awake and was just looking around calmly. He couldn't help wondering why she was not asking the questions anymore --

"Dear, do you know where we are going?"

"Germany, Uncle's house."

"Do you know how we are getting there?"

"No."

"Then why aren't you asking anymore?"

"Because Daddy is driving."

Because Daddy is driving.

This answer from a 3 year old girl has then become the strength and help for this speaker for the many years that follow whenever he has questions and fears on his journey with the Lord. Yes, our Father is driving. We may know the destination (and sometimes we may just know it like the little girl -- "Germany", without understanding where or what it really is). We do not know the way, we do not know how to read the map, we do not know if we can find restaurants along the way. But the little girl knew the most important thing -- Daddy is driving -- and so she is safe and secure. She knows that her Daddy will provide all that she needs.

Do you know your Daddy, the Great Shepherd, is driving today? What are your behavior and response as a passenger, His child?

You may have asked many questions before, but can you like the little girl, start to realize the most important focus should be "Daddy is driving?"

I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.

The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called Failure. A loop called confusion, speed bumps called Friends, red lights called Enemies, caution lights called Family. You will have flats called Jobs. But, if you have a spare called Determination, an engine called Perseverance, an insurance called Faith, A driver called Jesus, you will make it to a place called Success.

Happy Father's Day to ALL Papas, Dads, Itays, Lolos, Dadas out there!
