PIDT 2008 A Success

PIDT 2008 has drawn to a conclusion. It was an excellent conference. We enjoyed a beautiful setting, great weather, delicious food, and fantastic presentations and discussions. A warm thank you goes to the University of Memphis faculty, students, alumni and friends for hosting and planning such a terrific event. Your hospitality and preparation were top-notch. Thanks also goes to the attendees (on site and online) for actively engaging in discussions and activities. Remember that the fun continues on the PIDT Blog and Wiki.

PIDT 2009 will be at Smith Mountain Lake. We look forward to seeing you there.

Tennessee Twister

“Let’s twist again like we did last summer…” Last night was an engaging evening of fun, fun and learning. Yuri Quintana with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital discussed online medical outreach to remote countries with the Cure 4 Kids program. Chuck Hodges from Virginia Tech demonstrated the XO laptop from One Laptop Per Child program. Clif Mims from University of Memphis demo-ed and discussed Diigo, a Web 2.0 tool that does bookmarking plus a whole lot more.

We learned about all of these cool things while tasting some of the best Tennessee delicacies, including pickled pigs feet, pickled okra, pickled eggs, pickled beets…well you get the picture with the pickling…we also enjoyed RC cola and moon pies, Cowboy Caviar, butter pecan cake, Mississippi Mud cake, GooGoo clusters, M&Ms, Bazooka Bubble gum, Pringles chips, local strawberries, blackberry jam and country biscuits — and that’s just a sampling. I’m hungry right now. Just to make your mouth water, here are some photos, too.

The site and weather are gorgeous

Our planning team came in yesterday afternoon to haul stuff in and set up some things for today. We got caught in a typical afternoon downpour. Today, however, the weather is gorgeous, and it’s supposed to stay that way all weekend. Also, the site is a dream. The groundskeeper was on site today cutting grass and finishing up last minute clean-up details just for us. The front porch and rocking chairs are just waiting for our friends and colleagues to “take a rest off.” Travel safely.

I know that many of you are tied up with graduations and other commitments this weekend that prevent you from attending the PIDT meeting. In any case, we would like to encourage you to participate in real time or asynchronously. We’ve set up a variety of tools to help us network with one another, capture knowledge and share resources this weekend and afterward. I encourage you to find a meaningful way to participate:

Follow along and participate via Twitter.
Note the schedule on the PIDT Wiki.
Participate in the live blogging events.
Get a blog account.
Submit your Directory info.
Setup your RSS reader/blog/embed.
Upload/link your course info or syllabus.
Suggest discussion topics, facilitate and activity, begin developing a community resource, and more on the PIDT Wiki.

This is going to be a highly interactive event, both online and offline/face to face. We hope you can engage in one way or another.
