What is ajax ? I have found a really good definition on the Wikipedia page, so here is an exerpt :”The term Ajax has come to represent a broad group of web technologies that can be used to implement a web application that communicates with a server in the background, without interfering with the current state of the page.”

•  ”Using traditional methods, that content would have to be reloaded on every request. However, using Ajax, a web application can request only the content that needs to be updated, thus drastically reducing bandwidth usage and load time”
• “The use of asynchronous requests allows the client’s Web browser UI to be more interactive and to respond quickly to inputs, and sections of pages can also be reloaded individually.”
• “The use of Ajax can reduce connections to the server, since scripts and style sheets only have to be requested once”

 I started reading “bien développer pour le web 2.0“, and suggest it to all french readers… It’s a great book to begin with (a bit too nerdy sometimes, yet  ;-).

 But there are tons of ressources online, like Script.aculo.us, Prototype, JQuery or Open Rico.

What do they offer ? Free Javascript libraries, ready to use files, you call in your XHTML pages and this is (among others) the possibilities:

>> Background communication with your server without reloading the whole page (Ajax “whispers…”). See any Yahoo, GG form with auto-suggestion functions for example…

>>You provide seamless & unbelievable visual/cinematic effects : accordion / flash like menus, fish-eye effect (without any other plugins),  smooth effects and transitions, drag and drops,  …

>>All Widgets ahead ! Online API, spreadsheats, weather forecast, news readers… are more and more written in Ajax. 

 Here is a list of drawbacks that have to be listed, still taken from wikipedia  :

• Unuser friendly habits : “Dynamically created pages do not register themselves with the browser’s history engine, so clicking the browser’s “back” button would not return the user to an earlier state of the Ajax-enabled page, but would instead return them to the last page visited before it (…)”
• Web indexing problems : ” most web crawlers do not execute JavaScript code, web applications should provide an alternative means of accessing the content (…)”
• Accessibility “Any user whose browser does not support Ajax or JavaScript, or simply has JavaScript disabled, will not be able to use its functionality(…)”  :  so it seems one should use Ajax only when necessary and always offer alternative ways to reach the same content…
• “Opens up another attack vector for hackers(…)” OOOps !

You can read the whole list here. Anyway, Ajax is the future today. And the libraries are fantastic, though some beta version effects are not at all accessible and should be avoided…

So, why not giving it a try here  or put some Ruby on your rails,  after all, “ruby are a developper’s best friends ” ;-))

Howdy people  !

Yesterday, I browsed Adobe Flash official website and realized it is full, yes, FULL of great exemples, bug free (rare on the internet), with the .fla sources and stuff.

If you are looking for rss readers, effects generators, Action Script 3 ascii art, effects Generators (blur, layer modes, dropped shadows), and much more, you have to visit the official page and download the pack.

Another tip. If you’re looking for a wordpress to display .swf and flash objects on your pages (I don’t think this one works for .flv , there area other plugins for that) : SWF Plug-ins for WordPress

I like http://yazo.net/, it’s David Tardiveau Action Script ressources. He is a teacher at Gobelins school.

It features explanations in french. It’s fantastic for beginners.
