Darrelle Revis announced his retirement from the NFL via Twitter. During the course of Revis’ 11-year career, he played 145 games (143 starts), had 29 interceptions, made 411 tackles and defended 140 passes. Revis’ dominance resulted in seven Pro-Bowl selections and four First-Team All-Pro selections.

The former 14th overall pick spent the first six years of his career with the New York Jets. During his time with the Jets, Revis quickly established himself as a true shutdown corner. Opposing quarterbacks opted to ignore the side of the field where Revis roamed. Week after week star wide receivers left empty-handed and the term ‘Revis Island’ was born.

Discord with the front office coupled with a torn ACL brought about an end to Revis’ tenure with the Jets. He was subsequently traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013 for a first-round draft pick. During his time in Tampa Revis earned yet another Pro-Bowl selection, before being released after just one season.

Revis finally got his hands of the Vince Lombardi Trophy during the 2014 season, having signed with the New England Patriots on a 2-year $32m deal. The deal included a second-year option of $20m which the Patriots later declined.

With salary cap room and water under the bridge Revis and the Jets reunited in 2015 on a five-year $70m deal. Just two years into the deal it was evident that father time had caught up with one the greatest cornerbacks of all time. In the spring of 2017, Revis and the Jet parted ways one last time.

A brief stop with the Kansa City Chiefs (five appearances, two as a starter) in 2017 proved to be his final stop en-route to Canton and his enshrinement into the Hall Of Fame.

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Demarcus Lawrence terrorised opposing quarterbacks during 2017. The 6ft 3″ 265lb Lawrence racked up an impressive 14.5 sacks along with his first selection to the Pro Bowl. Reportedly seeking a five-year deal the 26-year-old will instead pick up $17.14m under the franchise tag.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell had himself a case of deja vu as the two sides failed to reach terms for the second consecutive year. Bell missed all of training camp last season before signing the $12.12m franchise tag. Expect things to play out in a similar fashion, only this time Bell is set to earn $14.54m.

The 26-year-old remained upbeat about the season ahead.

Former fifth overall pick of the 2013 draft Ezekiel Ansah also failed to come to terms on a long-term deal. The Detriot Lions defensive end recorded just two sacks during the 2016 season with the Lions. Injuries played their part, but the 6ft 5″ 275lb Ansah looked to be getting back to his best during 2017, as he recorded 12 sacks. Ansah will play under the tag in 2018 earning $17.14m.

Los Angeles Rams safety Lamarcus Joyner will earn $11.31m under the franchise tag during 2018. The former second-round draft pick (2014) started a career-high 12 games during 2017. The 27-year-old recorded three interceptions along with 39 tackles.

As were all well aware the season for the superstars within the NFL goes beyond the tough, grueling schedule of the seventeen week season. For those lucky enough the pain and toll on the body continues deep into the playoffs.

In the midst of all the excitement we have a tendency to almost disregard the fact that the players have sacrificed their bodies throughout mini-camps and the preseason. For some the battle to make a 53 man roster began as early as June during mini-camps.

My emphasis in this article is to point out a few interesting facts along with a familiar set of reacquiring circumstances that I deem to have had an effect on the outcome of a game, and seriously affected the teams chances of winning.

Let’s set the stage for you and you can be the judges as to if I have a valid case or am I just reading too much into the obvious.

The role/definition of a tough guy for me is as follows: “a strong man who is not easily injured and is able to deal with difficult and violent situations, as well as someone who bullies the weak’ but this is not to be confused with the role of an enforcer ‘a physically intimidating or willingly belligerent player who is counted on to retaliate when rough tactics are being used by the opposing team” Keep that in mind as we move forward, and I’ll get to my point.

Within weeks sometimes days after a team’s season is over the news feed concerning your beloved team is one dominated by reports that player ‘a’ is to undergo surgery for an injury he’s been dealing with throughout the course of the season.

Upon hearing such news, you go over a variety of plays and games within your mind coming to one of two conclusions.

Judging by his play you’d have never have known.

That explains his poor performances.

Before we delve deeper into this, let me make it clear that I applaud their toughness, commitment, heart, desire, self sacrifice and willingness to push through the pain barriers whilst giving nothing short of 100% for their team.

I also understand that certain injuries can be manged via pain killing injections, acupuncture, ice baths and copious amounts of tape. The issue is regarding those players who may have rushed back to full fitness, or those that have continued to play-on despite an obvious aliment.

Do those that choose to play on or come back to early do the team more harm than good?

Which inevitably leads to the whole point of this article (long winded I know). All together now, Is playing the tough guy detrimental to the team?

With the narrative firmly embedded into your consciousness factor in the following before asking yourself the question again.

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler suffered a groin injury against the Washington Redskins during the 2013 season. With Cutler unable to continue the Bears to turn the veteran backup Josh McCown.

Despite McCown’s impressive performances under center the Bears and Jay Cutler decided to roll the dice three weeks later as he returned to the action under centre. Placing both his health and the teams fortunes on the line.

Cutler’s mobility was clearly an issue throughout the course of the game against the Detroit Lions, leading inevitably to an early exit.

The diagnosis from the treatment table, a high ankle sprain along with re-injuring his groin. The outcome of the game, a 21-19 defeat.

New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie’s fall from grace has been well documented over the course of the season, Pro-Bowl to mediocrity in the matter of a few months.

Cromartie has been plagued by an hip injury all season, however prior to the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers Cromartie injured his knee during training on the Thursday only to be given the all for the game.

Antonio Brown was targeted eleven times, reeling in nine catches for 86 yards. Brown simply forced Cromartie to open up his hips before cutting inside of him and making the play. The result a Steelers 19-6 victory.

RGIII’s return to the fold can also be questioned. His circumstances are a little different from those above but the result is consistent with my point.

Understandably the team have the restraints on RGIII, but the physical evidence is once again clear cut.

Atlanta Falcons receiver Roddy White was extremely reluctant to give up on his nine year stretch of not missing an NFL game. Hampered by an high ankle sprain he suffered in pre-season.

Whites production hampered a faltering Falcons team. Through White’s first five games he reeled a lowly 14 receptions, with a high of 45 yards receiving.

Eventually White sat out weeks 7-9 to allow his body to heal. Upon his return White caught 10 passes for 143 yards in a victory over the Buffalo Bills.

Of course there is always an exception to the rule. Cast your mind back to last season and to Dallas Cowboys wideout Dez Byrant.

Despite a fractured index finger on his left hand sustained in a victory over the Bengals. Byrant decided to play out the remaining three games of the regular season, during which he recorded 354 yards receiving, along with 3 touchdowns.

Another player going against the grain, be it in a different manner is Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Big Ben is renown for talking about his various alignments leading up to a game, only to then put in another huge performance.

So…

Is it the joint responsibility of the players and the coaches when it comes to making these decisions regarding health?

Personally I understand the viewpoint of the player, they want to play every single down. Experience the highs and the lows whilst becoming an integral part of the team.

Then there’s the coaches view point. A run of poor results costs jobs. Why risk a player if he’s obviously struggling?

I’ll leave you with this…

Aren’t new heroes, fan favorites and stars born on the misfortune of others?

Nissan Stadium, Nashville

The Seattle Seahawks (1–1) head east to take on the Tennessee Titans (1–1) at the Nissan Stadium. Both teams will be looking to build on week two victories as they look to solidify their respective credentials as contenders come January.

The Titans find themselves back in the nations gaze following years lost in the wilderness. With Marcus Mariota under centre, the team’s fortunes are on the up, as are the numbers clamoring aboard the hype train.

Through the first two weeks of the season, Mariota has thrown for 471 yards, 1 touchdown, and a pick. Mariota has proved to be nothing short of perfect in the redzone (34 touchdowns, 0 interceptions) and the matchup against the legion of boom will be enthralling.

Titans fans have been salivating at the prospect of seeing more of last years second round pick Derrick Henry. With DeMarco Murray questionable (hamstring) the former Heisman Trophy winner Henry knows the stage is set to announce himself.

Looking to spoil the Henry coming out show is one of the most talented front sevens within the NFL. Leading the way are defensive ends Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril who’s presence alone is enough to give opposing quarterbacks nightmares.

The addition of Sheldon Richardson (via a trade with the Jets) adds another dominant presence to the fold and yet more concern for a talented Titans offensive line. Linebackers Bobby Wagner and KJ Wright are two of the best tacklers around and compliment the talent on the line perfectly.

The Titans offensive line overall play has yet to reach the heights of what was a dominant 2016. Tackles Taylor Lewan and Jack Conklin deservedly grab the headlines, whilst the likes of centre Ben Jones and tackles Quinton Spain and Josh Kline fly relatively under the radar outside of Nashville. The trio’s ability to open up the run game is a joy to watch.

Unlike the Titans the Seahawks offensive line has been somewhat problematic through the first two games. An ongoing issue that has seen quarterback Russell Wilson scrambling for his life.

Despite the punishment administered to Wilson, he remains a constant threat when forced out of the pocket. Wilson has rushed for 74 yards through the first two games.

Linebackers Brian Orakpo, Avery Williamson, Derrick Morgan and Wesley Woodyard will be looking to take advantage of the offensive lines ongoing problems whilst keeping Wilson in check.

The Seahawks continue to the run the ball on a rotational basis, Thomas Rawls (16 snaps) got the nod against the 49ers in week 2, but it was rookie Chris Carson (49 snaps) that caught the eye with 93 rushing off 20 carries.

Delanie Walker is one of the most underrated/under appreciated tight ends within the NFL and his rapport with Mariota has proved to be a lethal combination. Walker has posted a total of 2025 yards and 13 touchdowns during his last 32 games.

The addition of wideout Eric Decker provides some much-needed talent and experience to the group. Rookie Taywan Taylor is expected to have an increased role due to the absence of Corey Davis (hamstring).

The offense has a tough assignment against the ‘Legion Of Boom’. Safety Earl Thomas’s return to the fold is a welcome sight as the unit struggled during the closing stages of the 2016 season. Richard Sherman has heaped praise on third-round pick Shaquill Griffin, and the rookie’s play has justified the praise through the first his first two outings.

With tight end, Jimmy Graham listed as questionable (ankle) Luke Wilson will look to make the most of the opportunity. Like Delanie Walker, Doug Baldwin’s playmaking ability seems lost on the casual fan. Baldwin posted career numbers in 2016, reeling in 94 receptions for 1128 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Under the guidance of legendary coach Dick Labeau a revamped secondary that includes the addition of cornerback Ryan Logan and safety Jonathon Cyprien, will be well aware of the game-changing ability of Baldwin and co.

Trevor Siemian threw for four touchdowns as the Denver Broncos steamrolled a toothless Dallas Cowboys 42–17. All the focus was on Ezekiel Elliott heading into the match-up but a stout Broncos defense held last years rushing leader to just eight yards off nine carries.

With Elliott confined to the shadows of stardom, Broncos running back C.J. Anderson took centre stage along side Trevor Siemian. The 26-year old rushed for 118 yards and 1 touchdown.

Why the Cowboys decided they could beat one of the best secondaries through the air remains a mystery. Prescott completed 30 of 50 attempted passes for 238 yards 2 touchdowns 2 interceptions. Here’s how the action unfolded.

First quarter: The Cowboys opened up the game with a quick three and out before the Bronocs marched 78 yards (10 play drive) for a touchdown on their opening possession (Siemian hit Emmanuel Sanders for a 10 yard touchdown7–0).

Following another fruitless possession the Cowboys offense looked on as the Broncos orchestrated a 10 play, 63 yard drive only for Brandon McManus to push a 49 yard field attempt wide right.

Second Quarter: Three plays into the second quarter and DeMarcus Lawrence came up with a huge play. The 6ft 3″ 265lb strip sacked Siemian. Two plays later and the game was tied at 7–7 as Prescott hit Dez Bryant for a 3 yard touchdown.

The Broncos once again moved the ball with ease. With the ball at the Cowboys 19 the defense came up with a huge play as DeMarcus Lawrence sacked Siemian for a 13 yard loss. That led to 50 yard McManus field goal putting the Broncos up 10–7. However that was nullified, thanks to a 15 yard penalty for leverage.

The Broncos took full advantage as Siemian hit running back C.J. Anderson on a third and nine to put the Broncos up by seven (14–7). Following a 19 yard punt return the Broncos offense found themselves at midfield. Siemian converted a 3rd and 3 before hitting Sanders for his second touchdown of the game.

With the score now 21–7 and 1.38 left before the half the Cowboys needed to get on the board. Thanks to an incredible sideline catch by Dez Bryant, Dan Bailey made it an 11 point game as he converted a 56 yard field goal with two seconds left (21–10).

HALF TIME

Third Quarter: As with their first possession of the game the Broncos opened added another touchdown, converting a fourth 3rd down as part of a 15 play 75 yard drive sealed with Trevor Siemian 2 yard pass to Virgil Green (28–10).

The Cowboys responded and began to move the chains thanks to Slew of penalties (offside, roughing the passer). That momentum came to a sudden stop as Chris Harris picked off a pass that bounced off the hands of Dez Bryant. The Broncos capitalised as C.J. Anderson rumbled 23 yards to the house for his second touchdown of the game making the score 35–10 with under seven minutes left in the third quarter.

With 4.02 left in the third the Cowboys converted on fourth down, before Prescott missed Cole Beasley on a third down and the offense one again ground to halt as they failed to convert another fourth down.

With time dwindling rookie Jordan Lewis gave the Cowboys hope as he picked off Trevor Siemian inside the Broncos 40. Elliot kept the chains moving as he converted a fourth and one as the third quarter came to a close.

Fourth Quarter: Into the fourth quarter and Dak Prescott hit tight end Jason Witten for a 28 yard touchdown giving the Cowboys hope with 14 minutes left in the game (35–17). On the ensuing drive the Cowboys made a stand forcing the Broncos to a quick three and out.

Not to be outdone the resilient Broncos defense stood strong, in fact it capped off an incredible game in the final minute as Aqib Talib returned a Prescott pass 103 yards for a touchdown making the final score 42–17.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia

The Atlanta Falcons get their home campaign underway on Sunday night as they welcome the Green Bay Packers to the impressive $1.5 billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The meeting between the two is a repeat of the NFC Championship game, which saw the Falcons expose the Packers depleted secondary in a one-sided 42–21 victory.

The vultures are circling when it comes to the Falcons, as a collection of critics and keyboard warriors seek self-justification awaiting the slightest downfall in the teams fortunes (pounds keyboard SUPER BOWL HANGOVER).

A week one victory over the Chicago Bears (23–17) will be cast aside as nothing more than a routine victory against an inferior opponent as the weeks roll by. However it could prove to be a pivotal benchmark in the healing process as the Falcons were forced to dig deep to deny a spirited Bears team at the death.

New offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian knows the spotlight is on and will be looking to get more out of the ground game in order to keep Rodgers and co on the sidelines. The talented backfield duo of Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman were held to just 43 yards and one touchdown. Coleman also reeled in four of six targets for an additional 42 yards. It’s early but the loss of fullback Patrick DiMarco (free agency) could prove costly.

Star wideout Julio Jones will be looking to get back to his dominant play following off-season foot surgery (4 receptions for 64 yards last week). Jones enjoyed a huge game against the Packers last time out, reeling in nine catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns.

Last years MVP Matt Ryan looked sharp on his return to action completing 21 of 30 passes for 321 yards and a touchdown. Mohamed Sanu was the go-to guy in week one as Ryan targeted Sanu 9 times (6 receptions for 47 yards). Tight End Austin Howard’s numbers (2 catches for 128 yards and a touchdown) are somewhat inflated, due to some lack luster coverage.

One of the foundations for success in 2016 was the young yet talented group on defense. Linebacker Vic Beasley led the league in sacks 15.5. Alongside Beasley is arguably one of the quickest linebackers in the NFL Deion Jones. During his rookie season Jones led the team in tackles (106), recorded 2 interceptions and defended 11 passes. Behind Jones, playing the enforcer role is hard-hitting safety Keanu Neal. Despite the talent on show the defense failed to force a turnover against the Bears.

The key for success for the Packers will be applying the pressure on Matt Ryan and they’ll be hoping for a repeat performance from Mike Daniels. The 6ft 310lb defensive end was outstanding during the Packers 17- 9 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. During the third quarter Daniels strip sack of Russel Wilson helped set up what proved to be a pivotal touchdown from TY Montgomery.

Injuries took their toll on wideout Randall Cobb during 2016, and Sunday’s impressive outing (9 of 13 targets for 85 yards) will have Packers fans salivating, as they’ll hoping he and Rodgers can recapture their 2014 connection (91 receptions for 1287 yards and 12 touchdowns). An uptick in Cobbs fortunes will alleviate the coverage Jordy Nelson has faced. Factor in the addition of tight end Martellus Bennett and you’d have a strong argument for the most talented trio within the NFL.

It’s hard to fathom that the Packers lost to the Falcons twice during 2016, especially when you factor in quarterback Aaron Rodgers numbers (533 yards, 7 touchdowns, 1 interception). The 33-year old Rodgers needs two TD passes to become 11th player in NFL history to throw for 300 touchdowns. Unlike the previous two meetings where Rodgers aired it out an astonishing 83 times, expect the Packers to lean on the skill set of running back TY Montgomery. Whilst the numbers against the Seahawks hardly jump off the page the 19 carries for 54 yards and a touchdown not only kept the offense balanced but also kept Wilson and co on the sidelines as the Packers dominated time of possession (39.13 minutes).

Sunday will be another huge test for a revamped secondary. Cornerbacks Davon House and Quinton Rollins put in solid performance’s as the pair played in all but 3 of the 49 snaps on defense. The defense used a mixture of nickel and dime coverage’s which enable strong safety Morgan Burnett to play close to the line of scrimmage. The tactic worked as the defense held the Seahawks running back duo of Chris Carson and C.J Prosise to 50 yards rushing.

Foxborough, Massachusetts

The Kansas City Chiefs head east to take on the defending Super Bowl Champions the New England Patriots, in the curtain raiser for the 2017 NFL season.

In the weeks preceding the main event at Gillette Stadium both teams have seen their best laid plans rerouted as the injury gods selected victims at will. The Patriots find themselves minus Julian Edelman (torn ACL). Brady targeted Edelman an astonishing 153 times during 2016, connecting 98 times for 1106 yards and 3 touchdowns. As for the Chiefs they’ll be without their most productive back, Spencer Ware (torn MCL & PCL). Over the last two seasons Ware has amassed 1776 yards and 11 touchdowns.

How much time does Smith have?

Despite posting 41 victories over the course of the last four seasons Alex Smith remains a polarizing figure under centre. The 33-year old signal caller threw for 3502 yards and 15 touchdowns whilst posting a completion percentage of 67.1% (second highest of his career). With 2-years left on his current contract Smith is clearly the guy at the controls for the 2017 season. However the naysayers among Chiefs nation are already salivating at the prospect of rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs moved up 17 spots in the draft to select Mahomes,10th overall) who impressed throughout the pre-season.

Room for improvement on defense

Despite sweeping the division and locking up the AFC West crown, the Chiefs defense has plenty of room for improvement. As a unit they were ranked 24th overall. Looking to ease the loss of Dontari Poe (free agency), the Chiefs will not only be looking to lean on free agent pick up Benny Logan’s run stuffing capabilities (ranked 26th overall against the run) but also the quick feet and pass rushing prowess of Chris Jones, who flashed during his rookie season.

Outside of the household names at linebacker Ramik Wilson’s story and play is something to keep an eye this season. Cut by the Chiefs last September, the 25-year old found himself on the practice squad before establishing himself as a starter (11 starts during 2016). Even more unique was the fact that Wilson finished third in overall tackles (74), had 2 fumble recoveries 1 forced fumble along with an interception. The Chiefs also acquired Reggie Ragland via a trade from the Buffalo Bills. Both Wilson and Ragland will push veteran Derrick Johnson for a starting gig. Johnson is coming back from a torn Achilles.

Boasting the likes of 5-time Pro-Bowler safety Eric Berry and 2-time Pro-Bowler cornerback Marcus Peters it’s somewhat startling that as a group they were ranked 18th overall, especially when you factor in that the unit were tied first overall in interceptions (18). Even back-up safety Daniel Sorensen made some huge plays in the teams nickel defense (3 interceptions, 54 tackles, 3 fumble recoveries and a sack). The starting right corner back position was exposed throughout the season and all eyes will once again be on the likes of Terrance Mitchell, Steven Nelson and Phillip Gaines to step up solidify a talented core.

Life after Maclin & Charles

Following the release of Jeremy Maclin Tyreek Hill converts from special teams gadget man to number one wide receiver. After setting pulses racing in 2016 with a team high of 12 touchdowns, hype continued to swirl around Hill throughout training camp. Head Coach Andy Ried loves to feature his number one wideout, and the match-up against either Malcolm Butler or Stephon Gillmore will be enthralling.

Opposite Hill third year wideout Chris Conley will be looking to showcase his talent. Utilized mainly as a possession receiver in the past, will the Chiefs finally let go of the reigns and give Conley the opportunity to expose defenses with his 4.35 speed, whilst providing another big bodied (6ft 2″ 205lbs) redzone threat outside of tight end Travis Kelce.

Rookie running back Kareem Hunt has been showered with praise from numerous coaches and beat writers throughout OTA’S and training camp. The 6ft 225lbs Hunt enters the NFL off the back of an impressive final year at Toledo. Hunt rushed for 1475 yards recording 10 touchdowns along with 41 receptions for 407 yards and a touchdown.

Unstoppable Force?

Just three short years ago the group think mentality of social media was throwing handfuls of dirt of Tom Brady’s NFL career as the Chief’s decimated the Patriots 41–14 as the nation looked on. During that time span Tom Brady added two more Super Bowl rings to his collection bringing the group think back full circle. As according to numerous pundits and .com websites we should present the Vince Lombardi trophy to the Patriots, spend some time with our families and loved ones before we reconvene in September 2018.

Cook books and magical night wear aside the only question I have for Brady to answer is this; If as many suggest, he propels the Patriots once again to the promise land. Along the way can he eclipse the best ever season by a 40-year-old quarterback? (Brett Farve, 33 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, completion percentage of 68.4%, quarterback rating 107.2 as the Vikings went 12–4).

Backfield Riches

With the departure of Legarrette Blount (free agent) the Patriots added a slew of running backs during the offseason in the form of Mike Gillislee (5th round draft pick 2013) and Rex Burkhead (6th round draft pick 2013). Lets not forget the under appreciated Super Bowl story of James White. The 25-year old had 14 receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown, along with 29 yards and 2 touchdowns off 6 carries. A performance worthy of the Super Bowl MVP honours. Whats his role now? Does the system allow the Patriots to just plug n plug according to matchups they like? Is this once again the genius of Bill Bellichick? Is he zag ziging whilst everyone else is zig zaging?

New offensive threat

Not since Randy Moss have the Patriots had a legitimate deep threat. That mantra now belongs to Brandin Cooks. The former first round pick (20th overall) of the 2014 draft was acquired for a first and third round draft selection. Cooks has been nothing short of sensational during his time in New Orleans, with back to back 1000 yard seasons with 8 touchdowns or more.

With Edelman out for the year, Danny Amedola looks set to get another opportunity to prove his worth. Chris Hogan has experience in the slot and that 6ft 1″ 220lb frame could be utilized for mismatches that present themselves. That aside a mixture of running backs and tight end Dwayne Allen seems the more logical approach in replacing the 150 plus targets for Edelman.

Rob Gronkowski returns to the fold after missing the majority of the 2016 campaign. Whilst Gronkowski’s ability and impact on games remains evident, his ability to stay healthy has to concern the Patriots. Then there’s the small matter of the latest addition to an ever-growing arsenal of weapons, Phillip Dorsett. The former first round pick struggled during limited action in Indianapolis. Until Dorsett gets up to speed, expect to see him featured extensively on Special teams.

Revamped defense

The retirement of linebacker Rob Ninkovich after 11 Seasons (8 with the Patriots) hurts an already depleted group. David Harris a free agent acquisition brings a wealth of experience along with a proven track record of exceptional play to the heart of a defense, and will start along side Donta Hightower. With free agent cornerback Logan Ryan penning a 3-year $30m contract with the Titans, the Patriots moved to secure the services of standout cornerback Stephon Gillmore on a 5-year $65m contract. The underrated duo of defensive tackles Alan Branch and Malcolm Brown remain the cornerstones of a defensive line, along with defensive end Trey Flowers who caught the eye for all the right reasons in 2016. The Chiefs will need to pay extra attention to Flowers to keep Alex Smith upright.

2017 Draft Profile & Fantasy Impact

If you believe you can accomplish everything by ‘cramming’ at the eleventh hour, by all means, don’t lift a finger now. But you may think twice about beginning to building your ark once it has already started raining.

While the opening quote comes from the Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection From The Living Dead you’d be wise to adopt this mindset when it comes to your fantasy football philosophy. A week or so removed from the free agency frenzy, it’s time to turn our attention to the 2017 draft class. In particular the running backs, and the likely impact they’ll have on your 2017 fantasy team.

Leonard Fournette 6ft 1″ 235lbs

Born in Louisiana, New Orleans (7th ward) Leonard Fournette went on to attend St Augustine High School. During his time at St, Augustine Fournette showcased his talent in both track (100 & 200 meters) and football. Fournette’s talent was so obvious that his freshman year’s body of work (a little over 2500 yards rushing and 30 touchdowns) was enough for Louisiana State University to offer him a scholarship. The offer, was historic as Fournette became the first-ever freshman to be offered a scholarship by LSU.

Fournette compiled 7619 yards rushing, along with 88 touchdowns during his time at St Augustine. En route to his college career, Fournette earned a whole host of accolades (Louisiana’s Mr. Football, All-American selection via USA Today and Parade, USA Today offensive player of the year). All of which led to the overall consensus, that Fournette was the number one recruit in the 2014 class.

Time At LSU

During his freshman year, Fournette featured in 13 games, 6 as a starter. He rushed for 1034 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. Unlike the slow start to his LSU career (8 carries for 18 yards against the Wisconsin Badgers). Fournette went out in style, rushing for 143 yards and 2 touchdowns off 11 carries. The icing on the cake came in the form of a 100-yard kick-off return for a touchdown. Despite the heroics, LSU lost the Music City Bowl 31-28 to Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Breakout Campaign

Fournette truly announced himself to the nation during his sophomore year. En route to a NCAA rushing title and the LSU school record of 1953 yards rushing, along with 22 rushing touchdowns. Fournette not only rushed for 100+ yards in 9 consecutive games. But also became the first player in SEC history to rush for 200+ yards in 3 consecutive games. Once again during the season’s climax, Fournette turned in another impressive performance. As his 5 touchdown performance in the Texas Bowl sealed a 56-27 victory over Texas Tech.

Derailed By Injury

Hampered by injury Fournette’s Junior year was somewhat anticlimactic. Despite the high ankle sprain Fournette still managed to average 6.5 yards per carry, as he rushed for 843 yards and 8 touchdowns during the 7 games he started. During his 31 games at LSU, 24 of which were as a starter. Fournette rushed for 3830 yards and 40 touchdowns, averaging 6.2 yards per carry. He also reeled in 40 passes for 482 yards and a touchdown.

Analysis

A tough, physical runner. The kind of player that appears to thrive off contact. Possess a devastating stiff arm, which he uses to toss defenders aside. One cut and hits the hole, with outstanding straight-line speed. Quick to the edge on toss plays and sweeps. Lacks elusiveness. Limited sample size as a pass catcher (40 receptions in 3 years). Good in pass protection.

Fantasy Outlook

View as an RB2 with RB1 potential. Expect teams to feature him in goal line packages due to his physical nature and sheer athleticism. Has the potential to frustrate fantasy owners with a feast or famine weekly points total (especially if drafted by a mediocre team, that’ll be playing from behind).

Potential Landing Spots With Fantasy Upside

Carolina Panthers (8th overall pick): During free agency, the Panthers have added depth to the wideout core with the additions of Russell Shephard and Charles Johnson. With running back Johnathon Stewart turning 30 later this month, and Mike Tolbert a free agency casualty (signed with the Bills). The edition of Fournette appears to be a no-brainer. Especially when you factor in, head coach Ron Rivera’s comments on Cam Newton’s need to evolve.

Indianapolis Colts (15th Overall pick): The Colts desire to keep Andrew Luck out of harm’s way is clearly evident with the free agent editions of Brain Schwenke and Fahn Cooper. Adding a back with Fournette’s pass blocking capabilities would ensure Luck stays upright. Robert Turbin resigned with the team on a 2-year $4.1m contract and will be looking to cut into Frank Gore’s (turns 34 in May) reps. That aside Turbin, notched doubled figures in fantasy points just once during the 2016 season.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (19th Overall pick): With the curious case of Doug Martin, the Bucs find themselves at the crossroads in regards to the running game. Having run the ball 453 times during the 2016 season (10th highest or 43.9% of the time), Tampa has the potential to be a great landing spot for Fournette. The addition of DeSean Jackson gives the Bucs an explosive passing attack, along with the possibility of running the ball late in games, to see out those final few minutes.

Drafter Beware Landing Spots

New York Jets (6th Overall pick): It’s no secret that the Jets are in the midst of a rebuild. While the prospect of the adding a talented running back to the roster appears mouthwatering. It may well, however, frustrate both those fans in the stands and fantasy owners. Bilal Powell is coming off a career year (722 yards rushing along with 388 yards receiving). Let’s not forget Matt Forte remains an integral part of the offense, but in all seriousness. How often will the Jets spend running the ball if they’re always playing from behind.

Cincinnati Bengals (9th Overall Pick): The Bengals have a few issues Fantasy owners should consider should Fournette become part of their plans. Firstly the offensive line has been decimated. Right guard Kevin Zeitler (Browns) and left tackle Andrew Whitworth (Rams) left in free agency. Then there’s the remaining issue of the current running back duo of Gio Bernard and Jeremy Hill. Bernard is more of a third-down back whilst question marks remain over Hill’s inability to stay healthy.

Money Ball 2.0

Thursday’s NFL free agency frenzy marked the beginning of another calendar year for pro football. As cash-laden teams clamored for what’s essential, another team’s unwanted trash. Two teams were finalizing a deal, that would change free agency forever.

Going into the day the Cleveland Browns were expected to be at the forefront of activity, due to the $102m cap space at their disposal. Meanwhile, the Houston Texans found themselves with an ailing quarterback (who they’d signed to a 4-year $72m [$38m guaranteed] contact) and limited maneuverability within this year’s free agency window.

Game Changer

What unfolded next, left the Twitterverse dumbfounded, and awash with keyboard warriors salivating at the prospect of yet more misery for the hapless Browns. The Texans had not only acquired a fourth round draft selection (2017) for Brock Osweiler but also created an extra $10m in cap space. The price? The Texans sent their 2018 second round draft selection to the Browns.

Essentially, the Browns paid $16m for a second round draft selection. With the ink barely dry on the deal. Reports surfaced that the Browns were shopping Osweiler, with a willingness to eat $8m of the contract. The deal was basically an NBA-style salary dump.

As the dust settled on the transaction, it became evident that the deal was perfect for either side. The cynics will argue that $16m for a second round draft selection is a hefty price to pay. But they’d be wise to remember, that the Browns, like the other 31 teams in the NFL are required to spend a minimum 89% of the allocated salary cap.

Texans Part Overlooked

While the accolades have been thrusted upon the Browns brain trust for their analytical prowess. We should look towards the Texans and their ability not only, to own up to a mistake. But also their willingness to dump a salary for a second round draft pick.

Going forward will we see more teams burdened by the salary cap, offloading highly paid yet underperforming players? If so, the Browns/Osweiler trade will live on. As will their Moneyball 2.0 approach, which looks set to have a lasting legacy within the NFL. But ask yourself this, Who changed the way teams will conduct themselves in free agency going forward? Was it the Browns, or the Texans? Or perhaps it was just fate. As two teams inadvertently stumbled upon a solution?

However, we remember the 2017 free agency period. One thing certain, outside of the bleachers at the NRG Stadium. The Texans role will be as memorable as the 2016 playoffs. I get the sense this suits the Texans diehards.

As we all know, the NFL is a copycat business. So who’ll be the next high-profile player to be effective ‘Osweilered’?
