We found these floating statues in a pond in Kowloon Park, Hongkong. There was a festival and these are supposed to be statues of the Chinese legends of that festival. They really look beautiful while floating on a pond during the night and a lot of people were taking pictures.

I watched Michael Jackson’s This Is It last week. It was amazing. The concert would have been a fantastic show if it went through. The King of Pop delivered even while he was practicing. Anyway, I want to watch that documentary film again anytime soon. In the meantime, am watching Michael Jackson’s music videos on youtube. National Blog Posting Month

Though there are times I get lazy doing this, I always try to push myself harder to do this on daily basis. Surprisingly, once I get started, it just flows. So, this is another challenge for me.

Trips And Souvenirs

I had a nice surprise when a friend came by my desk this morning. She gave me an Eiffel Tower keychain and a refrigerator magnet with a picture of the Colloseum on it. She just came from her Europe trip and those two items were her souvenirs for me. It was too bad that we were quite busy with our monthly reports today that we were not able to talk much. I did not expect those souvenirs though as I know that her trip was an expensive one and souvenirs can be quite expensive if you do not know where and what to look for. This is why I felt thankful that she remembered to give me some souvenirs from her trip.

I remember our Australian trip several years ago. It was such a memorable and a dream come true trip for me but when it came to buying our souvenirs, we asked around for the best and most affordable souvenir stores before we finalized buying our souvenirs from Australia. As we usually buy souvenirs for our friends and families during our travels, we decided to just pool our money together to buy some souvenirs for our common friends. We bought some keychains for them. On the other hand, I bought two souvenir bags with aboriginal symbols on it and an Australian cap. I gave one of the bags to my mother and the other one, for my personal use. One of my friends bought t-shirts as souvenirs and the other one, bought an Australian boomerang.

I had so much fun with our Australian trip with my friends that we promised to return someday and hopefully, we can stay longer and do more sight-seeing.

I am confused with this blog’s pagerank. I tried checking its pagerank and I learned it was zero but when I checked pinaylighterside.blogspot.com, which was its former name, the page rank was two. So, now am wondering which is which because both URLs, the pinaylighterside.com and pinaylighterside.blogspot.com is one and the same.

The photography meme, Litratong Pinoy, is having a one-month hiatus this month to do some changes in their website. This meme usually goes up on Thursdays and I usually prepare my entry every Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning. It has become a routine for me for more than a year now and right now, I am missing it. I am thinking of finding another meme for Thursday but I don't feel it's right to do it. I'll just post some photos to compensate for the empty space that Litratong Pinoy meme has left for the meantime. Come back later to see the photos.

Music Monday #27 SS501's Love Like This

I am a sucker for dance and upbeat songs. A lot of times I don't care much for the lyrics as long as the song has a good rhythm. This is a good example of that, SS501's new song, Love Like This.

I started watching this music video out of curiosity because I want to know how Kim Hyun Joong looks nowadays after recovering from a bout of H1N1 virus infection. He looks well now and cute (as always) but he still needs to gain a bit more weight. Seems like Korean celebrities like themselves stick thin, I think. These are my new bags. They are spacious, sturdy, colorful and pretty. It is locally called bayong and can be used anywhere. I bought them last month from a trade fair. I love their colors and decided to buy two of them. The bags are environment friendly because like a lot of Philippine bags, they were handwoven and the materials used were indigenously made from plant stems and leaves.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is assisting cooperatives and associations mostly from the rural or countryside areas thru their livelihood programs. These bags are some of the products being made by these groups. The government agency is linking the producers and buyers of these products thru trade fairs, and other business events.

Michael Jackson’s This Is It

If you have not yet seen Michael Jackson’s This Is It, better watch it now. You won’t get disappointed.

I went to watch Michael Jackson’s This Is It tonight and as expected, the King of Pop did not fail to amaze me. The signature moves were still there and I can’t believe that he’s already 50. Amazed and awed, that was what I felt while watching the last days of Michael Jackson practicing his moves and his songs. He kept pace with his backup dancers half his age. He ruled the stage and knew his cues. His genius is quite apparent in the movie. The more I watched, the more I felt sad that it was his last hurrah. His death is really such a big loss. I am truly grateful that this documentary, which was meant for his personal use, is being shown now. He could have given his audience a grand adventure if only This Is It had gone on as planned.

Hurting Knuckles

My knuckles still hurt; specifically, the right hand, middle finger knuckles. I stopped my boxing for almost a month and just did group exercise. I did a little of shadowbox last week and tried to get back to doing the punch mitts yesterday. But, arrrrghh..my knuckles hurt. We tried to adjust my handwrap thinking it would help and yet, they still hurt. After three rounds of punchmitt punching, I gave up. The skin looked so red after pulling all out the handwrap. The trainor said it commonly happens for the hard punchers. Right. Now, am worrying if I should go to the doctor and see what is wrong with these knuckles. Meantime, I am forced to slow down again in my boxing. Sigh! I am going to miss it.

Litratong Pinoy#73 Amoy (Smell)

The moment we went out of the Sydney airport, the smell of the pines met us. The air smelled so fresh in Sydney, it was something really surprising and new for us who came from Manila.

Pilipino:
Sa sandaling nakalabas kami ng paliparan ng Sydney, amoy ng pino ang sumalubong sa amin. Preskong-presko ang simoy ng hangin ng Sydney, ito ay bagay na nakakabigla at nakakapanibago para sa aming nanggagaling pa sa Manila.

It was a far cry comparing it upon going out of the Manila airport because smell of exhaust smokes can be smelled in the streets of Manila. It is because there are still places in Sydney that has a lot of trees and these trees can clean the polluted air produced by factories and vehicles. While in Manila, it seems cutting trees is the norm and this is without regard to the effect to the environment and health of the people.

Pilipino:
Malayong-malayo kung ikukumpara sa paglabas ng paliparan ng Maynila dahil usok ng tambutso ang maamoy kaagad sa mga daan ng Maynila. Kasi naman, may lugar pa nang maraming puno ang Sydney at kaya ng mga punong ito ang linisin ang masamang hangin na gawa ng mga pabrika at mga sasakyan. Forgetting My Own Mother Tongue

Filipino is my mother tongue. While I live in a multilingual family as is common in any Filipino family, my parents’ common language is Tagalog or Filipino and I grew up using it as my first language. Tagalog or Filipino language is my parents' way of meeting halfway in their communications with each other as they both came from different parts of the country.

You would imagine that I would be quite proficient with the national language, Filipino. Wrong. As I grew older, I got more comfortable talking in Bisaya or the Visayan language mixed in with some Tagalog words and would tend to write in English more than in Filipino or Bisaya.

This confusing use of several languages however did not do me much good last week. In fact, I felt mortified.

A client wrote us a letter using our Filipino language and I was tasked to draft the reply for it, which should also be done in Filipino. It took me thrice the time to finalize my draft. In fact, I had to stop from time to time and do research for the words that I was not sure about, and there were lots of them. It took me almost a week to edit the whole letter that was actually just about 100-150 words for any wrong grammar and punctuations. The letter was no novel, but I felt like I was about to go on nosebleeding episodes trying to finish it in full Filipino language.

That was when I realized that I am on the brink of forgetting my mother tongue while I was busy trying to hone my English skills with reading, writing and blogging.

How can I call myself a true Filipino if I could barely finish a letter in my own mother tongue? This is why I promised to myself that I should improve my usage of my mother tongue. Not for anybody, but for myself. If I cannot talk in Filipino, I shall try to improve my writing in Filipino. I used to read a lot of Tagalog komiks before but got tired of it. It is quite rare to see them now but there are a lot of Tagalog pocketbooks in bookstores, I shall start with those. If any of you can recommend any reading materials, short of advising me to get back to school, feel free to share your recommendations.

Efren Penaflorida: Pinoy CNN Hero

A hero need not come in cape while flying fast to his destination. He may come in with a pushcart laden with school supplies, chairs and tables. He may not save people from physical danger but he sure can save them from illiteracy and offer a way out of poverty. This is our Pinoy hero, Efren Penaflorida.

For children who live in slums, poverty is just a way of life. Illiteracy comes with it and it becomes a cycle if they cannot get out of the quicksand of nothingness.

Efren Penaflorida knew this as he was one of them before but he was different. He worked hard to get to school and better yet, he worked hard to impart what he has learned.

Because children of poverty can barely come to school for a myriad of basic reasons such as they do not have food in their stomachs or they do not have slippers to wear to get to school, alot of them end up being drug addicts, gang members, bums and thieves. So, Efren decided to help by using his pushcart along with his volunteer-teachers and went around the slums teaching the children.

Because of his work along with his Dynamic Teen Company, Efren Penaflorida is now one of the nominees for the CNN Heroes. Please vote for him and let us be proud that he is our Pinoy CNN Hero. His win could also help more slum children to get out of the slums and have a better education.

Litratong Pinoy#72 Masinop (Frugal)

The frugality, industriousness and organized ways of the Batanes people or Ivatans are very obvious in their whole surroundings.

Pilipino:
Halatang-halata sa buong kapaligiran ng Batanes ang pagiging masinop, masikap at maayos na kaugalian ng mga taga-Batanes o Ivatan. I saw their quiet, hardworking, simple ways of life and good character when we took a vacation in Batanes.

Pilipino:
Personal kong nakita ang kanilang tahimik, masipag, simpleng pamumuhay at mabuting pag-uugali noong kami ay nagbakasyon sa Batanes.

And I was really impressed with their clean and cemented roads that they actually reached the mountainous and far flung areas. Their frugality are easily seen anywhere and it seems that their officials are really doing their job, right?

Ruby Tuesday#21 Travel By Boat to Caramoan

There are two ways to travel to Caramoan Peninsula, Camarines Sur from the town of Sabang. Travel by land for about 4-6 hours (mostly dirt road) or travel by boat for about 2 hours. We chose the boat but we were about to get wet. So, here comes the "kargador" (stevedore) who all wore red, by the way. They can carry your things for you or they can carry you too by P20.00 per person. You can choose to sit on one shoulder or you can actually ride on his neck LOL! Me? I chose to wade and get in the water, not my travel companion though. She chose to be carried LOL!
