ONE OF THESE DAYS is a retrospective of Ian Emes work over 40 years, beginning with his association with Pink Floyd through to current installation films. “I hope that my journey will provide some encouragement to aspiring artists and filmmakers in the face of today’s economic climate”- says Ian.

“Born into a working class background in the North of England, I was extremely lucky to be young during the Swinging 60’s and to be provided with a superb art education by the state. The prosperity of the time gave me the freedom to experiment, and often to fail in those experiments. In the same era Pink Floyd were able to take control of their process and thus they created a phenomenon. The Pink Floyd concert experience has never been matched.

In homage to this, I have presented my exhibition as a kind of post-psychedelic ‘happening’, an immersive installation of projected images through which the viewer can travel, a bit like being able to walk through the internet. I hope to open a window on the way it was and provide an experience in the context of now. It’s a life of making moving images, which I want to share.

From the perspective of a film director who has also made hundreds of commercials, I see today’s generation being constantly bombarded by the mind-numbing messages of global corporations and it worries me. I’m a rock and roll animator who sold out and somehow ended up in the boardrooms. In response to this strange twist of fate, my new work deals with the issues of media indoctrination and information overload, fuelled by the belief that youth must fight to invent their own culture.

I want to spread the word that success lies in the work and not the diamond-studded wet dream of fame. I would like my exhibition to demonstrate my passion for the creative process, regardless of the consequences. My new installation BE WHO YOU ARE – WHATEVER poses the question – are you being who you are told to be, or are you…being you? ” -Ian Emes

Biography:
Ian Emes – Director
After studying fine art at Birmingham College of Art, Ian began his career as an animator. His award winning experimental film French Windows (1973), brought him to the attention of Pink Floyd who commissioned him to direct their first animated concert film The Dark Side of the Moon (1974), which includes the legendary Time sequence. Ian also acted as advisor on The Wall, while creating other works such as Tubular Bells for Mike Oldfield (1975) and the iconic Oriental Nightfish for Paul and Linda McCartney (Palm D’Or nomination Cannes1978).
During this period Ian made numerous other experimental films such as The Beard (Berlin 1980), and The Box of Delights (BBC 1984). His London studio gained a reputation for ground breaking visuals and he was cited as the foremost British animator of the eighties, winning accolades around the world. In 1982 his achievements were celebrated in a retrospective at the National Film Theatre.
Concurrently Ian diversified into live-action, writing and directing short films, amongst them Goodie Two Shoes, (produced by Jeff Katzenberg for Paramount Pictures, receiving a British Academy Award and Oscar Nomination, 1983).
Music videos include the - quote - ‘masterpiece’ The Chauffeur (Duran Duran 1982), and The Wall – Live in Berlin (Roger Waters, starring Rupert Everett and Marianne Faithful, 1990). He has directed numerous award-winning commercials for Ridley Scott Associates.
Television series include the cult How to Be Cool (starring Roger Daltrey, adapted by Ian from the novel by Phillip Pullman, 1989), Streetwise (starring Andy Serkis 1989), Buddy Faro (starring Dennis Farina, NBC, 1992), The Invisible Man (Universal, 2000), Sir Gadabout (starring Tamsin Egerton, produced by Linda James, receiving a British Academy Award Nomination and INDIE Awards Best Children’s Programme, 2002).
He has made four feature length films, Knights and Emeralds (produced by Sir David Puttnam for Warner Brothers, adapted into a novel for Fontana Paperbacks, 1987), the cult film The Yob (starring Keith Allen, C4, 1988), The Munsters Scary Christmas (produced by John Landis for Universal, 1996) and the critically acclaimed Deadly Summer (starring Francesca Annis and Pauline Quirke, C5, 1997).
Recent works include the music video Space and the Woods (Late of the Pier 2009), the installation film Flightpath Tegel, (John Foxx 2009), a retrospective exhibition It Was A Thursday Night at the Horse Hospital in London and DNA, a collective show with celebrated filmmakers and musicians such as Alex Proyas and Gary Numan.
He participated in the group exhibition It Could Happen To You at the Ikon gallery in June 2010 with other prestigious artists and his new installation film, International Aiirport Plastic screened at the John Foxx 30th Anniversary Show at the Roundhouse.
Ian has just scooped his third British Academy Award, this time for directing and designing the TV series Bookaboo, which has also took Best Children’s Programme at the Broadcast Awards.
About Unit 24
Unit 24 is both a hyper-modern, completely minimalist space, just three minutes from the great Tate Modern, and a functional dry cleaning business. You can go there to collect your spotless cleaning but in fact this is an art gallery of deliciously ironic and serious intent. The spacious white cubes of its interior are host to an amazing array of contemporary art, a million miles away from being an elitist institution. Unit 24 is open to a wide group of viewers; it communicates to the modern urban citizen of the futurist cityscape around Tate modern that art can’t be avoided any more than any of our other essential needs – dry cleaning included.

Has anyone like me, ever noticed during 'Time' on the Pulse DVD when Rick is singing Hanging on in quiet desperation, is the english way... That he seems to exchange a private 'twinkled grin' with Dave? Always makes me wonder if there's a private jolly between the men where that lyric could refer to the length of time between Rick's fall from Roger's graces and the length of time he sort of hung on till dave put the band straight with the momentary lapse and delicate sound...
i just finished editing down a collection of my favorite all time guitar solos with the one from 'Time' heading the list just ahead of the 'Numb solo'

On Friday night, Dark Side Of The Moon - A Photographic Exhibition (http://brightondome.org/events/Dark-...-the-Moon/4599) opened at the Brighton Dome. It's a special celebration of Pink Floyd's first (and quite troubled) attempt at a performance of their best-known album, which took place on January 20th 1972 at the venue. To start the exhibition in style, photographer Jill Furmanovsky, who took many of the pictures on display, underwent a 30 minute Q A with an interviewer, taking questions and comments from the audience as well. Some of the attendees were at the original 1972 shows, adding their own thoughts on them. Jill's own story proved quite fascinating, taking pictures at a tender age and falling into professional concert photography almost by chance, by the sound of it.Choice examples of her pictures of Pink Floyd adorn the various walls in the Founders Room, and the adjacent main bar of the venue - 11 in the bar, and 28 in the Founders Room. Alongside her shots are ones taken by Storm Thorgerson at various points, Tony Collins' wonderful shot of David Gilmour at London's Hyde Park in 1970, Colin Prime's 1967 Ruskin Park group shot, and one of Mick Rock's pictures of Syd outside his Earls Court flat. Particular favourites for me included a pair of 1972 Brighton shots with Roger hammering away at his gong, some of the 1974 backstage/soundcheck shots, and the terrific picture of all the band at the Live 8 rehearsals (a tantalising single glimpse of this historic practice session). The pictures below show Jill during the Q A, along with some of the opening evening's attendees studying the walls...The exhibition runs until March 20th, at the Founders Room at the Dome, and is open between 10am - 5pm on Tuesday through to Sunday, each week. Admission is free.

At Dreweatt's Clifton auction room (http://www.dnfa.com) on January 24th, a collection of rare music photographs is being sold on behalf of Amnesty International. The pictures all come from the collection of renouned photographer David Redfern, many of which are signed by him. Included in the sale is the famous shot of Mick Jagger wearing that 'white dress' costume at the now legendary 1969 Hyde Park concert, two pictures of the first Pink Floyd line-up (with Syd Barrett) along with one later shot of the band, rare photos of David Bowie and an unusual picture of Count Basie lighting Princess Margaret's cigarette. In total, there are around 30 lots, with estimates ranging from £40-150 each lot. Colin Richardson from Books for Amnesty Bristol, who knew David back in the 60s, said: As the bookshop runs entirely on donations, it was particularly exciting to receive such a magnanimous one from David. This is a rare opportunity to buy some very sought after photographs by one of the most important music photographers of our time. We are hopeful that most, if not all, of the lots will sell, as the estimates are a fraction of their true value. The auction takes place at 10.30am on Tuesday, January 24th at the Apsley Road, Clifton saleroom room. Viewing days are Saturday 21st, Monday 23rd and the morning of the sale. More details at DNFA.com (http://www.dnfa.com), and the direct link to the catalogue itself is here (http://www.dnfa.com/bristol/auctions...ew=saledetails aucno=20497 avail=1). UPDATE: We now know that it is FIVE rare Pink Floyd images up for auction, which you can see below:

Howard Stern's daily radio show (http://howardstern.com) on SiriusXM, and spent around an hour talking about a vast range of subjects, and also confirmed the Yankee Stadium show on July 6th. Presale tickets for this go on sale on Monday, with general sale starting one week later. (http://www.ticketmaster.com/Roger-Wa.../artist/736426) With Roger in a clearly relaxed and happy mood (and as he said, wired due to the coffee he'd downed far earlier than he normally would!) the interview proved a fascinating affair. You can read a summary of the chat here (http://www.marksfriggin.com/news12/1-16.htm#wed); Roger talked about everything from his childhood days, learning the guitar, his marriage on Saturday (January 14th) to Laurie (congrats to you both!), through to entensive discussion on his music - both as part of the Floyd, and his solo career. We were a cracking team when we were younger...from '68 to 'Dark Side of the Moon' we were a tightly-knit group. [Dark Side of the Moon] was the first time we started making any cash. He even mentions the long running saga of The Wall On Broadway, noting that it is now on draft number five but clearly still hopeful that it would happen. Our thanks to everyone who helped out with information on this interview, which you can hear through this Youtube video:U84Sy8S0f6I
Just a short intro, been reading the 'Rough Guide' (Toby Manning)borrowed by my son and he thought I'd like to read it. Just about finished and I noticed top roadie Phil Taylor has a few entries in this forum. I knew him from Sevenoaks England and last saw spoke on the stage after the gig at Wembley November 1974 !!! He and they (the Floyd ...various variations) have seen a bit since then. Concerts been to : - Bath Festival 1970 / Earl's Court London 1973 / Wembley as above, oh and (if it counts)Australian Pink Floyd Croyon England 2005.
