Steamed Buns with Char Siew (roast pork) filling
I hesitate to call this a char siew pau (or char siew bao). It isn’t a char siew pau (steamed bun with roast pork filling) in the truest sense of the word. I guess you could call this a char siew pau with a twist.

I hesitate to call this a char siew pau (or char siew bao). It isn’t a char siew pau (steamed bun with roast pork filling) in the truest sense of the word. I guess you could call this a char siew pau with a twist.

A usual char siew pau will only have the white steamed dough wrapped around the char siew (roast pork) bits inside. This one which I bought from Desa Seri Petaling has the white pau dough wrapped around a steamed cake (mah lai ko) middle. The char siew is wrapped up inside.

<!--

google_ad_width = 468;

Eaten hot, it is delicious.

The char siew is a little on the sweet side, but it is tempered beautifully by the pau dough and the mah lai ko cake which isn’t sweet at all. I actually really enjoyed it.

Each bun retails for RM1.60 at the famous Loh Mai Kai pau shop at Jalan Radin Anum 1 in Desa Seri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur. I’ll be writing about the special Loh Mai Kai pau soon so stay tuned!

Not terribly flattering if you ask me. Its actually an arch into the cave if you are facing it direct. However, it must be borne in mind that The Cave is located in the middle of a row of shop houses in the busy SS2 business area. Anyone in their right mind would approach it along the five foot way as right in front of the arch is a busy road; and having this image thrust in your face isn’t exactly a welcome. Well, not unless its meant to be some tongue in cheek joke … that did not quite come out right did it?This is just a taster...
Read the rest of The Cave Couple Cafe & Restaurant in SS2 Petaling Jaya (1,218 words)

I am averse to soy bean based products but I will always make an exception for good tau fu fa or tau foo fa, a dessert made out of soy beans. The soy bean milk is congealed into a pudding or custard consistency and is usually served hot with sweetened syrup.

One of the better tau fu fa I’ve had in Kuala Lumpur was a recent discovery at Tengkat Tong Shin in Kuala Lumpur.

This Tau Fu Fa stall is located right at the corner of Tengkat Tong Shin, next to the famous Ngau Kee beef noodle stall. Tengkat Tong Shin if you don’t already know, is another famous food street in Kuala Lumpur, running parallel to Jalan Alor (where the hawkers are) and Jalan Bukit Bintang. This is just a taster...
Read the rest of Tau Fu Fa - Soy Bean Pudding Dessert at Tengkat Tong Shin Kuala Lumpur (168 words)

We always start with the Galette (RM19) which is like a thin pizza served piping hot and with delicious mushrooms, onions and cheese topping. It is about a 6″ size and always leaves you wanting for more but you don’t want to fill up on pizza here! You are here for the ribs! This is just a taster...
Read the rest of Checkers Ribs Restaurant at Damansara Heights (514 words)

My favourite satay (or sate) to be found in Kuala Lumpur is at Jalan Peel or Peel Road. This is in the area bordering Cheras and Pudu and is located near the Carrefour Cheras and Queen’s Park.
I have a friend from Sabah who used to tell me about the strange and wonderful fruits and foods they get in Sabah. One such fruit he never failed to talk about was Buah Tarap (Tarap fruit). One day, my sibling returned from Sabah with such a fruit as a souvenir of his trip and I cheerfully dug in!

This is a picture of the Tarap fruit that is opened. From the outside, it looks like a Nangka (jackfruit) or Chempedak with the skin covered with soft pliable thorn-like, spines. When ripe, the outer skin is soft and easily pulled apart to reveal the edible fruit inside.

The fruit comes in seeds like that of a jackfruit. Each seed has a layer of flesh covering it. The texture of the flesh is soft and tastes a little like a soursop - sourish and sweet at the same time. I can’t quite describe the taste, but it is very unique indeed.

If ever you go to Borneo, specifically to Sabah where this fruit is found in abundance, make sure you try it if only to say that you have sampled Buah Tarap!

A Roasted Suckling pig is eaten not for its flesh which is too little, but for its skin. The skin is usually very thin and with the roasting, it takes on a very crisp texture which is the measure of a good roast suckling pig. The flesh is usually seasoned with spices to add to the flavour.
I’d been hearing a lot about Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks for a while, and whenever I passed by their booths, I’d be taken in with the promise of XXL Fried Chicken and Oyster Mee Sua (rice vermicelli with oysters). One day, I bit the bullet and paid a visit to the Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks booth at The Gardens Midvalley Megamall.

I bet you didn’t know that Shihlin Market is a night market in Taipei, Taiwan! Well, I didn’t either until I looked it up. The food served at Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks are supposed to represent the street food found in Taiwan but not having been to Taiwan I can’t tell you how authentic it is. Also, the idea of “street snacks” in a mall is weird but I guess it makes it accessible to everyone all year round. Anyway, enough about history, onto the food! This is just a taster...
Read the rest of Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks - The Gardens MidValley Megamall (632 words)
