Sheker initially billed Manila Bulletin for the use of the pictures, but they refused to pay and negotiate. Months had passed with no developments, Sheker finally decided to settle the dispute on court, filing a Php1.2 Million copyright infringement lawsuit with his lawyer, Atty. Rod Vera, last June 5, 2008.

This case should serve as a lesson to everyone that not everything found on the internet can be taken for free without any consequence. Frankly, Manila Bulletin should have known better.

I also hope that this would pave the way for other oppressed copyright holders to have the courage to stand up and fight. If you are the one who made it, you have every right to defend it irregardless of what medium is used and where it was placed and taken.

As a mere observer of the whole charade, I could never make out what was true or not. My stance on whether Lozada was telling the truth was not clear partly because I didn’t know him very well for me to have the right to judge him. Then again, no one really knows who Jun Lozada really is. The Filipino people had placed him under scrutiny, judging him under the facts given to us by the media. But let’s face it, truthfulness on such matters is not the media’s main priority. There would always be bias on such controversial matters.

Is there any way for us, the concerned masses, to know the truth without relying on a biased-driven medium? How can we know Jun Lozada more so that we could decide on what to truly believe in?

The answer to the questions came rather unexpectedly, and it came in a form that is familiar to most of us: A blog.

Last Saturday, May 31, 2008, a small gathering of people convened at Kape Tasyo (Quezon City, Philippines) to witness the launch of the blog of NBN-ZTE Star Witness Jun Lozada. It isn’t just a blog about Jun Lozada per se, but a blog where he himself could write about his sentiments and thoughts.

A couple of days after launch, Lozada’s blog became an instant hit with comments continuously pouring in response to his articles. His first two articles, “Message to the Youth” and “First Postings” has attracted the attention of both pro and anti-Lozadans.

Blogs are a great way for a person to extend a message to a target audience. And the people who encouraged Jun Lozada to blog knew this. They knew how to put a very powerful medium into good use.

Now that Jun Lozada has his own blog, I can now finally listen to Jun Lozada without all the hype and partiality that comes along with media coverage. C’mon Mr. Lozada, let’s hear what you really have to say… We’re all ears.

I’m back!

At last, I finally found some free time to blog again. Being on the final year of my college life, I consider this opportunity as a miracle. Rarely do students like me have the luxury to slack off from studying and have the time to engage in an equally demanding task such as blogging.

Unfortunately, my free time is limited to only a couple of hours per day. And so, to avoid overstressing myself once again, I have decided to make some adjustments to my posting frequency. Instead of the regular T-Th-S-Su schedule, I’m lowering the frequency down to 1 to 2 major posts a week (excluding weekend recaps and news).

Anyways, enough with that, let us check what has happened in the Pinoy blogosphere during my absence.

Blog Event Alert!

• There’s a big event that will be held this September called WordCamp Philippines 2008. Based from what I have gathered it would be an event for Wordpress users all over the Philippines. I even heard that there will be talks on both the technical and non-technical side of Wordpress. Oh, and there’s also the possibility of meeting the big guys of the Wordpress industry like Lorren VanFossen.

Pinoy Blogosphere News

• Jun Lozada now has a blog and it can be found at http://jlozada.com/. The blog was officially launched yesterday thanks to the help of the Bloggers Kapihan Team. You could read the media coverage of the event over at Inquirer.net.
• By next Saturday, Bloggers Kapihan would be spearheading another blog launch, and this time it would be the blog of Among Ed Panlilio. Check out the full details here.
• Nominations for the Emerging Influential Blogs of 2008 is now open! Check out the full details of the writing project here.
• PinoyMoneyTalk has just released the top 50 blogs based on Alexa Rank for the month of May. Too bad PinoyBlogero.com didn’t make it into the list. Looks like I still have a long way to go for me to be included in such a list.
• Wordpress Philippines says that there are currently 2.3 Million Filipino Bloggers today. This is based according to the Wave.3 Social Media Tracker by Universal McCann, a New York media agency. Check out the other details here.

• Wondering why you can’t log-in to your Entrecard account, well that is because the EntreCard Data Center caught fire this afternoon. The Entrecard team assured that there were no damage, though there might be a bit of a downtime to assess the damage.
• A cuban blogger is awarded with a Journalism award. And who says, bloggers cannot become journalists?
• BloggingMix, a succesful blog about blogging made by Rocky (a fellow Filipino and who also happens to be one of my favorite bloggers), has been bought by WhyDoWork.com. Congratulations to Rocky!

• According to reports, a new movie script revolving around “blogs” has been purchased by MGM Studios. The story is about a shy collegian who discovers that life in 1,000 years will be based on his blog. Now that’s something new, I wonder how it will turn out.
