Many Globe Telecom subscribers in the Philippines are reporting sudden internet connection issues today. Affected users say their phones only show an EDGE signal instead of 4G or 5G, and mobile data is too slow or not working at all.

So far, Globe has not released an official statement on the outage. Reports from users suggest that some Globe customers still have normal internet access, which may mean this is a localized or partial service disruption.

What We Know So Far

Issue started 7:30pm.
Affected users see only EDGE signal instead of LTE or 5G.
Internet connection is either very slow or completely unavailable.
No confirmed cause from Globe Telecom yet.
Some users report normal service, suggesting not a total nationwide outage.
Downdetector shows a significant spike in outage reports.
GOMO users are affected too!

But in case you haven’t heard yet, there’s one thing you do need to do — register your SIM.

How to register a GOMO SIM?

Open the GOMO app. You probably already have it on your phone. If not, download it from the Play Store or App Store.
Log in using your GOMO number. If you forgot your number, you can usually see it inside the app.
You’ll see a prompt to register. Just follow the steps. The app will ask for some personal info like your name, birthday, address, and a valid government ID.

Why do we need to register?

Back in the day, you could just buy a SIM, insert it, and boom unli-text kay crush. But those days are gone. Thanks to the SIM Registration Act, all mobile users (yes, lahat prepaid at postpaid) are now required to register their numbers.

Why? To protect us from scammers, spammy texts, and shady budol offers that start with “Congratulations! Nanalo ka ng iPhone 69 Pro Max.”

It’s the government’s way of making sure the person behind the number is legit and not some keyboard warrior with 20 fake accounts.

Who needs to register?

If you’re a prepaid DITO user you need to register your SIM manually.

If you’re postpaid, DITO may have already pre-registered you when you applied for your plan. But still, it won’t hurt to double-check with DITO just to be sure.

If don’t register your prepaid SIM in the Philippines under the SIM Registration Act, your SIM will be deactivated. You won't be able to reactivate it anymore afterwards and would need to get a new SIM again.

Good news Filipinos! StarLink satellite broadband service is now available in our country. If you are living in the Philippines, you are going to pay an initial cost of P29,320.00 for the receiver kit. Then you will have to pay P2,700.00 per month for the service.

I was actually expecting that its going to cost us between P5,000.00 to P10,000.00 so this is a very surprising move and a happy development for us.

However, there are also some potential issues that can arise with eSIM technology. These may include:

As of this writing, I can confirm that Globe and Smart already supports e-sim. Haven't seen any articles yet saying that the 3rd telco Dito also supports e-sim.

So I recently got this question,

"Which should I buy between the two, Huawei Nova 3i or Mi Redmi Note 5?"

Before, when somebody asks a recommendation from me, I ask first what they need and what are their priorities. I then pick a shortlist of things that I believe will satisfy most of their considerations, point out the pros and cons of each and then let them choose between the those things. Today, I'll be doing it differently. I'll be the one choosing for a friend and my basis would be my own wants and needs.

Huawei Nova 3i vs Mi Redmi Note 5

I choose Huawei Nova 3i. Period.

That's quick. but why?

Reason why I like Nova 3i better.

The phone is smaller and thinner but it got larger display. 6.3" vs 5.99". This means that Nova 3i has thinner bezel too because the screen to body ratio is better than Redmi Note 5
Lighter than Redmi Note 5 by 11 grams

I like sleek devices

Slightly better screen resolution
Updated Android OS 8.1
Nova 3i is utilizing big.little technology with its Kirin 710 shipset. So in theory it should have a better battery efficiency and can switch to high performance when needed. However, there's little data as of now to say that its actually overall better when compared to Redmi Note 5's snapdragon 636
Larger storage
Better camera quality both Main and Front facing cam
Its more expensive, but its newer so it should be more future proofed

If you like to see the comparison table, check out this link from GSMArena. (take note that the PH Version of Redmi Note 5 is using Snapdragon 636, but the GSMArena shows snapdragon 625. The 636 is the correct one)

BUT, since the Nova 3i is the newer phone with slightly better specs its expected that it will cost more than the Redmi Note 5.

Right now, Nova 3i costs P15,990.00* and Redmi Note 5 costs P11,490.00. That's a difference of P4,500. Even if Nova 3i comes with a free bluetooth speaker when you purchase it, some people will still think that the price difference is not justified.

However, there are several methods to boost up that android performance. Here are some helpful tips that you can do to make it work faster.

Update your phone

The latest software will often be containing bug fixes and improvements that can assist your android device to run smoother. Updates tend to come OTA (Over The Air), and you should be ready to install them, and it’ll only take a while to go and check it. Go to “Settings,”” About device,” “Software update” and check whether updates are available.

This method is also applicable to any application or apps in your phone, so open up the Play Store, check the menu at the top left and tap or click “My apps” and double check if all of the applications installed in your phone is up to date.

Clean your home screen

Choose a static background image instead of using live wallpaper. Make sure to get rid of any unused icons and limit your widgets to what is essential or most needed. The more organized your home screen is, the better your phone performs.

Get rid of or uninstall unused applications/apps.

Apps or applications that you don’t use can take up space on your phone and can eat up your system resources, causing slower performance. Go to Settings > Apps and swipe to the All tab. Check the list and pick the applications/app that you don’t need or want. If you have no idea or forgot the function of that app, then check it on google so that there will be no regret later.

Last September 21, 2017 is when iOS 11 was released for download , and of course, for update to the Philippine market. I actually planned on waiting for a couple of days before touching the update but my curiousity has beaten my patience. I went for the upgrade morning of the same day and the installation (in my case) is seamless and has no problems at all. However, I noticed that my 3 year old iPad Mini 2 became slower. It was already slow since iOS 10 so I decided to upgrade my iPhone 6s to have a little bit more confirmation. I didnt notice any degradation in performance in my 6s so my issue on the iPad might be because of it being an old device.

I made a facebook post asking my friends how their upgrade went and here are the responses I got:

My PNY Powerbank (7800mAh) of 3 years died on me months ago which leaves me with just one remaining Pineng powerbank (10000mAh). Not entirely enough for someone who brings tons of gadget every trip. Good thing I saw a sale on Lazada Philippines for a Pineng powerbank with 20000 mAh for only P849.00. It was already a good deal considering I got my Pineng PN-968 for P848 2 years ago and PNY 78s for P1.2k 3 years ago.

Available colors are white+gray and black+red. I ordered 2 pcs , one for each color. My officemate wants to get the black+red one so the white ended up on me.

So this is a true rated powerbank which means, it really is closed to the claimed 20000 mAh as compared to the typical cheap chinese powerbanks you can buy anywhere. WARNING: There are many sellers claiming that they're selling an original Pineng powerbank. Pioneer Appradio mode stopped working IOS 11 update

I've updated my iPhone 6s today to iOS 11. I didn't experience any update issues along the way. The download was quick and the install is seamless. I've got to experience the new interface of iOS 11 without any problems throughout the day. That is, until after office when I get to the car..

I inserted the lightning cable from my Pioneer AVH-280bt head unit to the lightning port of my iPhone and it instantly activated my spotify playlist. Then as part of my routine is to open up Waze from either my phone or via the head unit's screen (yes, that is possible). On a normal, working day, Waze app should open on my phone and will subsequently be shown and controllable on my head unit's display. However, what happened is that the screen turned blank. Spotify is still playing in the background but my phone is already in AppRadio mode and yet the screen is still blank screen. Normal trouble shooting is to either:

disconnecct and reconnect lightning cable
close AppRadio / Waze app on iPhone and reopen again
turn off head unit, and then turn on again

Usually after trying any or a combination of the things listed above will solve the problem (yep I agree, that Pioneer AppRadio is such a pain to use sometimes). But this time, I failed to fix the problem. Then I remembered I recently updated to iOS 11. So opened safari and didn't some quick google search. Here is what i got

So basically, there's an issue with AppRadio on iOS 11. I just can't think of any valid reason why a company like Pioneer who has already an access to developer versions of iOS 11 has failed to release an update to the AppRadio app prior to iOS 11 global launch. They should already have tested AppRadio on the pre-public release version and have enough time to fix any bugs before iOS 11 is release. This sucks but what we can do no is just wait for the AppRadio developers to do something on the application for us to be able to use it again.

Bummer!

I remembered, I still have iPhone 5s. Hope I dont forgot not to update it yet.
