So, you know how sometimes you sit in bed at night and think “Well, I could always kill myself” and suddenly all the world’s weight is lifted from your throat and you’d say you slept like a baby except babies give you the creeps (the little sociopaths) and so you avoid wasting any of your private energy conceding they even exist but then sometimes that doesn’t do the trick because you understand, deep down, that there’s just so much fucking horror in this world a coward’s exit wouldn’t make any kind of impact except on the handful of people foolish enough to give a fuck about you and no matter how desperately you paint yourself a misanthrope you’d kind of feel like a dick for hurting the people who bothered to offer you kindness (love even, albeit rarely) despite your many faults because it’s one thing to live like an asshole and a whole other to die like a shithead and so you reevaluate your whole perspective and settle on the consideration “Well, I could always just start some fires” and that seems to work because as much as you tout your “fuck me” rhetoric what you’re really scratching in your hardon heart is “motherFUCK every one of them”?

No?

You know, I never much cared for the Beach Boys. In fact, until recently, I was all but totally against them. Maybe it was on account of how embarrassed I was to ever be young enough to love “Kokomo” or maybe it was all that time I fucking hated California or big, wide, soft harmonies. Maybe all three. Who knows? But a few months ago, I went on a bender of yearning to understand just what it is that makes people consider Brian Wilson an unmitigated genius which – of course – led me to Pet Sounds which, after a few gringing listens, revealed itself to be a a piece of batshit postmodern pop mastery which – it turns out – Mr. Wilson will be performing at the LEVITATION festival to celebrate the record’s 50th anniversary which is an event that spurred the event’s curators, The Reverberation Appreciation Society, to enlist a whole bunch of folks to pay homage to the album like Shannon and the Clams (swoon), The Black Angels and Night Beats who cover “Sloop John B” with a ragged air of Northwestern ash which you can sniff at your leisure right down below. The record, A Tribute to Pet Sounds, drops as a double LP on 5/27 via T.R.A.S. Full details come after the track. Rockit.

Please dig below. Rockit.

I thought I was watching a grotesquerie of BDD when I first spied White Lung‘s new clip for “Hungry” (off Paradise, due 5.6 via Domino) but, upon further reviews (and with director/White Lung cover artist, etc. Justin Gradin‘s assurance) I understand what I was really seeing was a bit of blunt-force weirdness commenting on the passing ghosts of attraction or attention or half if not quasi if not nearly quite Warholian fame which is all well and could but can we talk – for a second – about the unflappable foxxxiness of George Clarke in black gloves and short shorts? Because I’m pretty sure I never looked that fly when I was trying to rock the “Charlie Don’t Surf” vibe.

All that aside, “Hungry” is a welcome pitch shift for White Lung from the stampeding whorl that punctuated their early work to a far more considerate, temperate structure. It’s still as punk as Misha and company can be but its patience offers a haunting glimpse into Paradise‘s expansive potential.

You’ll find that video and all known tour dates below. Rockit.

Pardon the caps but it’s been a minute since we were this excited for metal but MYRKUR is kind of a big fucking deal around here. A one-woman black metal act that plays as readily to faerie folk as it does to the carrions of hell, MYRKUR broke all manner of antisocial norms with the release of last year’s magnificent M (which even NPR gushed over) and now NOW she’s coming to America with none other than BEHEMOTH! to deafen and stun the masses still clinging to the Western patriarchy like a manchild to a broseph’s teet. She’s also touring Europe with Deafheaven which is a bill made in grey Hades but doesn’t do me and my kin any good.

Back in the days of purple streaks and bitter, bitter New England winters when I was just a pale boy with some dumb scars and a script that would level out Mark E. Smith I was nothing short of a full-blown goth. Hmmmm. Maybe not. It wasn’t until college that I ended up “dancing” mushroom Saturdays away at the Pyramid in a black ball gown, spider web fishnet shirt (thanks, Speak…whoever you may be these days) and dog collar pretending that Dead Can Dance was really on to something total and by then I’d dropped the meds and started in with the shakes that persist to this day but the point is, once you’re goth you’re kinda goth for good and that’s awesome because goths are foxxxy as fuck when they aren’t all terrible and even then, at least, you can learn something new about Kierkegaard. So I’m goth even though I don’t wear it as well as I used to. Heat Dust is kinda goth too but way more goth in the spirit of the post industrialist Bat Cave risen up from the Bayou Brood than the Un Chien Andalous of my youth so of course my callowed cockles are humming hard for the new cool ghoul pop of their new scooner jam, “Seeking a Praxis” (off their eponymous Flenser debut, due 9.25). You can and should hep hard to its wonder below and then catch the band laying waste to the autumnal USA alongside Thou and The Body soon. All known dates end the page. Rockit.

I fucking love Wolf Eyes. Love ’em. Love ’em. Love ’em. Even though (or maybe because) they drive me out of my hopeless skull and straight into some no future fuck beast that’s all wet hair and teeth any and every time I’ve ever indulged in their Trip Metal/Trap Mental/Trope Model hellscape of wildly informed Michigan weirdness. So it’s weird to be relate their new jam, “Enemy Ladder” (off I Am A Problem: Mind In Pieces due 10.30 via Third Man) with the knowledge that’s its something kinda close to straight up rock and roll or about as close to rock and roll as disco bones can get, ground up and snorted off an Anasazi rite. All desert bloom and industrial doom and churning post-punk hardons swung over the fire and is that an actual drum in the background? HOLY FUCK, MAN! THIS IS THE SOUND OF THE NEW END, BABY! THIS IS BOZO, UNFUCKWITHABLE! GET HIP OR GET FUCKED! Rockit.

Fuck, I loved that band) who’ve taken their respective love of post punk, metal, noise and madness and mashed it all up into something deliciously moody and totally crushing. This track comes from their upcoming Forgive Yourself (due 8.21 via Relapse) which a sawbuck says will rule and also predicates a brief, sweltering tour. Those dates are just below the video which is just below this. No shit. Rockit.

I have never cared for Coheed and Cambria because I don’t like prog no matter how postmodern it can get between the punks and the metalheads in a McLuhanian bro off and I also can’t handle Rush (though, thanks in no small part to the Trailer Park Boys, I have been able to afford the band some degree of fuckin’ awesome) and concept albums are the pits unless you’re Craig Finn or Bruce Springsteen or Prurient, I guess but whatever with my reservations because Coheed and Cambria have just dropped the first track off their upcoming NOT CONCEPT! album, The Color Before the Sun (due out 10.9 on 300 Entertainment) and that’s a big fucking deal for a whole lot of people with better sense than me and besides that it’s actually kinda fun as all hell, if decidedly bitter so maybe not that fun at all but it’ll be shit-sure blast to shout along to…ironically? I don’t know but the song is called “You Got Spirit Kid” and it’s embedded below (as a lyric clip with fireworks and confetti and WHOO!). Rockit.

I’ve never caught or killed a rat in my life and even if I had the chance, I’d probably skip it because rats are kind of awesome. Mice on the other hand? Fuck a bunch of mice. Sorry, Eternal Summers. I know that mice make the charm of your new lilting swing “Come Alive” (off Gold and Stone which is out NOW! via Kanine) really pop but mice and I have a long-standing understanding whose name might as well be war. Those are mice, right? Jerks. But enough about my vendetta because this clip is totally adorable if just a touch psychotic and the song, itself, is like a soft breeze over a Key West catamaran. You can check that out below and then go see the band play some time between now and when the cows come home. Seriously, their schedule is endless. Rockit.

And so I’d be happy to share this new clip of his, “Winning Streak” (the first notch from Didn’t He Ramble, due 9.18 via Anti-), because the song is lovely as Hansard has ever been but the video, it turns out, was edited by Pinpoint Contributor (and periodic salvation), Melissa Huffsmith-Roth, and being that the damn thing is lovely and patient and touching and just warms all our old bones at HQ, we are over-the-moon STOKED! to share it with you. You can see it below. Sadly, NPR scooped us on this debut. Oh well. There are worse outlets to lose out to. Rockit.
