Shamefully, I have been struggling with my abs project. And this blog, being an extension of it, struggles as well.

I can not agree more with Jesse that blogging and dieting (in my case, improving my abs) are both alike. That it requires self-discipline, patience and self-knowledge.

Image from Dreamstime Free Photos

Here are the clearer lessons for my abs project that the article pointed out to me.

Jesse enumerated six similarities between blogging and dieting that I now relate to my abs project and to this blog.

I've got to know what I need to do.

Jesse encourages me to focus on what I need to do rather than what I need to avoid. He's absolutely right. If I failed to do sit-ups today and worry no end, tomorrow will still be the same - I can try again. Simply put, I should do sit-ups daily.

I have to set goals for every stage.

He further wrote
"People who only say “Someday, I’d like to …” never do. If you only think about the end result — whether its sales leads or a slim waist — everything else feels too daunting. People who only say, “Today, I’ll settle for …” never do any better. You keep yourself from building momentum and taking advantage of strategic possibilities. You need a medium focus to help keep you on the path to success. The goals in the middle are the ones that keep you accountable and keep you on the road to “someday.”"
My goal is to lose an inch off my waistline every month. If you nag me about it, it will boost my perseverance.

I got to measure, but not too much.

I have to measure my progress in connection to my goals. Since my goal is in a month's time, I only need to measure once month. That means less time worrying about my progress and more time to actually do the project.

I've got to take a balanced approach.

It is not just enough to regularly do sit ups. I also got to watch what I put inside, specifically, having too much rice in a single meal. Also, I have to reschedule my rice intake to be more during breakfast rather than dinner.

I've got to do it my way.

This is where self-knowledge comes into the picture. I've noticed that I do not do well with military-like regimen. I felt happier when for a given a day, I voluntarily increased my number of sit-ups because I want to and not just following a pre-planned number of repetitions.

I've got to commit to my abs project.

Being still a bachelor at 32 practically says it all, about me and the word commitment. If I can be committed to making my abs stronger and prettier to look upon, then I can be more able to commit too, with other important aspects of my life. But first, being committed to the project will translate to this blog being more active.
Such momentum a few days back is doing wonders for my morale and motivation for my abs project.

It's ON!

Moments ago, I put out my old weighing scale. I am glad that I now weigh less than 60 kilograms, around 58 kgs some give and take. My body mass index at 22.7 shows I'm currently at my ideal weight.

Prior to checking my weight, I did some 5 full push-ups. In sports parlance, I am on fire.

Image from Dreamstime Free Photos

On one hand, I was discouraged to update this blog because I failed to follow my project plan. However, my fitness plan got an unlikely boosts.

Nearing two months now, I have been, unintentionally at that, performing a physical activity daily. Being out of work coupled with my father's health problems, I have no choice but to be in-charged with purchasing products to be sold at our small sari-sari store.

Walking to and from the supermarket, carrying grocery bags of varying weights, served to be my daily work-out. Sometimes, I get to do that twice in a day. Every now and then, I'd do sit-ups and push-ups.

3 different persons already commented that I lost weight. One said I don't look good being so. While another praised the seeming reduction on my love handles. The third one is my girlfriend, so her point of view might be biased towards making me feel good. Hehehe!

But weighing myself today proved that I really lost some weight. That is a welcome validation and a source of new-found momentum for me to get back on track on my abs project.

Still, there's so much to do. Even my abs-project 2011 resolution is hard to accomplish on a regular basis.

But the good thing is, until I find a new job, I will be obliged with this informal workout. My abs project surely wouldn't mind.

But being sick is worse.

Worse for my body, for my mood, for my drive to blog or do anything else. Not to mention the big holes it brought to my wallet.

Last March 20, I attended the annual homecoming at my high school alma mater. After which, I felt rejuvenated and ready for my job search plan. However, a day later I contracted a flu that lasted almost a week. And up until now, I have been bothered by a cough that looks like wont be leaving me soon.

Image from blog, crumpcrew.

The plan for that week was to submit as much resume as possible to potential employers so that when April comes I will be busy with interviews. And as I wait for calls for interview schedules, I will be blogging and working out too.

During the same homecoming, it was announced that on the ocassion of the school's foundation day, a fun run for a cause will be held. That will be in August. And I thought then, that I can include in my health & fitness goal to be able to join the 3K category.

I still have three months to go but the period of being sick with flu and the persistent coughing put a big question mark into achieving such a short term goal.

Grrrh!

Running for Charity by Globe

Globe Telecoms is spearheading a run for charity dubbed Globe Run for Home 2011.

The run for charity event is touted as the first biggest charity fun run of the year and will be held on March 27, 2011 at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

I felt compelled to post this because I am advocating fitness and that I earn a few bucks by selling Globe Prepaid Load.

The charity fun run is open to all. The prizes will surely interest competitive runners while health buffs can enjoy running in groups and make it truly fun running for charity cause.

Proceeds of the event will be given to partner institutions; Gawad Kalinga, Habitat for Humanity, Haribon Foundation and Virlanie Foundation.
This post is mainly for a few of my friends who are into running and fun runs, as their way of being healthy or keeping fit. While I have yet to fully grasp the fun in it, I am sure they would be interested in joining.

Yes it was a late one but I still feel it is a healthy hearty lunch just the same. :D

A bowl of oatmeal with milk & chocolate and one fresh banana.

I felt full after but somehow felt guilty for not breaking my abs-project-related resolution for this year.
The moment you complete this, you will have definitely given concrete form to the intangible desire.

- Napoleon Hill

So, I guess if we really plan to reduce our beer bellies or unwanted fat in general, we should put it into writing. Or in my case, putting it into a blog for the whole world to get back on me when I start to renege.

Or better yet, use technology to write and monitor your health/fitness plan for the year. Your Nokia cellphone can become your health/fitness buddy 24/7 via these health & fitness apps from the OVI Store:

2011 Resolution Reminder
Use this app to make your promises count this year. Regular reminders can be a great way to make sure you don’t forget about your resolutions.
Wellness Diary makes monitoring of your day-to-day wellness almost effortless, helping you to build healthy habits into your daily routine.
This service is still in beta phase and under development.

Your phone becomes a full-featured GPS sports computer, keeping track of everything from calories burned while running to your average cycling speed over altitude. You get maps, time and distance calculators, step count, and even heart rate when you use a compatible HR belt. All data is stored in a diary so you can chart your progress, find your strengths and weaknesses, and share with others.

If you are in the same boat as I am and uses a Nokia phone capable of downloading apps, you should consider these three health & fitness apps.

Or just write your own abs-project even on an old notebook in your room, just like me. *winks*

My Two Abs-Project-Related New Year's Resolution

I will join the chorus of this time - New Year's Resolutions - for my overall health and, of course, my abs-project in 2011.

People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas.

~Author Unknown

Image from daveograve@

Luckily for me, I wasn't worried at all on what could've eaten this past holiday season. Rather, I was more concerned on how to afford what will be our holiday feast.

So, my first resolution for 2011 is to always eat on time. Because missing a meal often lead to late-night binges, extra rice and all. All the calories happily stored by my beer belly because I will soon dozed off to sleep. The main focus of this resolution is to eat a lot. Yes! You read that right. Eat a lot, ONLY on breakfast.

My second New Year's resolution is to sleep enough hours. Rightly so because accordingly;

A sleep schedule is vital to any weight-loss plan, say Wake Forest University researchers who tracked study participants for 5 years. In the under-40 age group, people who slept 5 hours or less each night gained nearly 2½ times as much abdominal fat as those who logged 6 to 7 hours; also, those who slept 8 hours or longer added nearly twice as much belly fat as the 6- to 7-hour group. People with sleep deficits tend to eat more (and use less energy) because they’re tired, says study coauthor Kristen Hairston, M.D., while those who sleep longer than 8 hours a night tend to be less active.

~Habits that double belly fat

Image from malias

I think that these two resolutions are realistic and achievable enough for me this 2011. Happy 2011 to everyone! And may all our resolutions, including my abs-project, be achieved this year!
(I will fight) I will fight till forever! (make it right)

My neglected abs project got a much needed CPR from an unlikely source - Justin Bieber's Never Say Never (plus a training soundtrack) . The song is played as the movie credits of The Karate Kid (2010) rolled in.

The song somehow reinforced the message I took from the movie. That is, keep getting up no matter how many times you're knocked down. Well, it fits my abs project to a T. It has become an on-and-off endeavor. I keep trying to be consistent about it, of which I consistently failed to do.

But as the movie pointed out, you can alway get up for every failure. I found a new hope in reviving my abs project. And, as corny for some as it may sound, a training soundtrack too!

I suppose I can revise the take-off-put-down-pick-up-hang-in-put-on jacket scene into my own towel-wrap-towel-unwrap training while whistling my training soundtrack. LOL!

On a semi-serious note, I am back to my early morning push-ups routine.

Aiming and Working to Achieve My Ideal Weight

Having been busy with my return to our house and an added pressure at my day job, I undeliberately left my abs project on the wayside. Now, that I am practically settled at home, I found time to think about my healthy endeavor.

As this is another beginning, I figured that I should know first where my health stand currently before going forward. While there are a lot of things to consider before one is declared healthy, an ideal weight is probably the most noticeable indicators of being healthy.

So, I sought the web for help to find what should be the ideal weight I should aim for.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a good estimate of an ideal weight based on one's height and actual weight. Armed with a tape measure and old but working weighing scale, I measured myself: 160 cm & 61 kilograms.

According to BMI Calculator of the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute ( under the US Department & Human Services), I currently have a BMI of 23.8 which falls on the Normal Level.

Body Mass Index & Weight Categories

Normal Weight = 18.5 to 24.9

Overweight = 25 - 29.9

Obesity = 30 & above

It was a relief to learn that I am weighing normally but still, I sought out other websites. The next site I referred to was www.hall.md. I particularly liked its calculation because it factors in age and gender.

The site revealed the same BMI calculations plus offered other information. 60 kgs is the ideal weight considered by most people with the same age, gender, height and weight like mine. And recommended (supposedly medical) the range of 49 - 64 kgs as ideal weight.

Honestly, 60 kilograms feels just right as my ideal weight even though I concluded it without a medical advice from a professional. And I'm glad I am not way way off. It is very encouraging to have a much easier and more achievable goal. Still, I would still love to work and try to have that piolo-like abs.

Ting! A Hit-two-birds-with-one-stone idea!

I can only agree to this observation but some bright idea came to me. I just thought that Sab can use the situation, unwelcome as it is, to work in her favor.

As of the moment, she is in the midst of a biggest-loser bet with a close friend and she is often whining about that she needs to save money.

Well, if she just suck it in, for the next couple of months at least, she can really hit two birds with one stone. Oops! Let me correct myself. That would mean hitting two huge birds with one pebble.

Eating in our building canteen can save Sab some money instead of walking to nearby Shangri La Plaza where she has a lot of delicious choice but pricier most of the time. Besides, if the taste is not that delicious, she would surely not order extra servings.

Adding two and two means that would be better for her wallet and lesser for her weight. And since she claims to help me with my abs project, I sure can return the favor.
This is my first for the month of August.

And my abs project is back to the future I've imagined.

As I was alone, I decided to explore the entire by-the-bay esplanade. Walking the whole route was a good warm up in itself. Considering that it has been three weeks since my last jog, taking slowly will not strain my body.

When I reached my usual spot in the flags area, I jogged straightaway to the Bungee-Jumping-area never slowing my pace. Catching my breath for some seconds, I proceeded to walk back to the end.

Although I was only able to do 2 laps, I was glad with the way I sweated out. Before going home, I used the free equipment for some workout for my abs.

All in all it was a good jog/workout. I guess I'm back - for the future of my abs. ;)

Jogging is the centerpiece activity for this project of mine. But these three reasons listed below prevented from doing just that.

1. Sick bay
2 Rain
3 Alumni Event in Silang Cavite

I do not know why, but the previous two weeks seemed like busier than usual. In the few times that I had, I made up for that lack of jogging by lifting dumbells in our boarding house. In fact, my arm workout has already leveled up to 3 sets by 12 repetition.

But I am positive about the next two sundays of August. And yes, the project will push through!

I was down with the flu - body aches, cough & colds. Thus, I wasn't able to jog around.

I consider the month of July a success with regard to this project. I was able to jog on all Sundays of July.

A not so good start for August.

My body probably reacted with the sudden activities and the rainy days more or less bolstered it. I was practically in bed the whole time last Sunday and Monday. Tuesdays & Wednesday I temporarily forego using the stairs and even the morning stretching.

Last night, however, I felt completely recuperated. I was A-okay.

So, I did the 3 sets - eight repetitions lifting-weights routine for my biceps and triceps. New gym rat housemate Apol was present for both encouragements and guidance. He even suggested to increase the number of repetitions.

But given that I had a recent bout with flu, I decided going easy but surely would be good for my body long term. And I am planning to integrate some workouts I saw on an old issue of Men's Health magazine.

Abs project is now back on track!

Stair WorkOut to power my Abs Project

I have been extremely motivated in this abs project that I incorporated another form of exercise - a stair workout.

Our office is at the 11th floor of a building has, thankfully, two elevators. But today there were long queues of people waiting to ride them. So, I tried the stairs to get to our office unit faster.

This is where the idea hit me.

Stair Work-Out for my ABS
Courtesy of My Office Building Stairs

The way I started this project was humorous. There was a need to improve my health, create a personal blog that will eventually be used at work and at the same time realize a solution to not-so-pleasing to look at abs.

Soon, I was thinking of diet and simple routines. When the desire was solidly established, I sought to do a weekly physical activity - jogging. Basic personal workouts followed and now another one - physical activity using the stairs of the building where our office is located. I feel that stair exercises will further accelerate my project.

We are on the 11th floor. I just thought that using the stairs instead of the elevators would do wonders in burning calories. Most of my waking hours are spent in the office. And the stairs just lay there waiting to be utilized.

It started with just 2 floors walking through stairs, then it became 7 floors and this week, I have accomplished going from the ground floor to the eleventh.

I feel that doing this stair workout at least once a day will do wonders for my abs and endurance.

Sunday Jog, TeamJACOB, Arm Weight Training Tips

Had another Sunday jog by the Manila Bay at the Mall of Asia grounds just moments ago.
This time, we (me, apol & chips) had a new fitness recruit - fellow high school alumni, Rujohn.

Like me, Rujohn also have a fitness plan which he calls "I'm hotter than you, Papa P - teamjacob" project.

He was supposed to join us as early as last week but was probably detained by his bed (& partner) LOL!!!!

Anyway, as they are more advanced joggers, they jog the whole straight path alongside the bay. While I took my own jog route. This time I labored with a fourth lap and have no more energy to join the aerobics fun.

Back at home, I had some useful weight-training tips from gym-rat pals Rujohn& kuya apol. Rujohn introduce me to the idea of sets. He advised 3 sets of 10 repetitions on dumbells for my biceps & triceps every other day. I bargained for 8 repetitions. Kuya Apol demonstrated the proper form for tricep weight exercise. hehehe!!!

See, I really have no need to enroll at a total fitness gym! LOL!

I am now thinking of formalizing my daily workout. But I am still hesitant posting it here as I may not be able to religiously follow it. I'll see.

Total Fitness Gym for me? I guess, Not Yet...

Housemate Apol had recently enrolled in a total fitness gym. I would like to believe that my recent interest in physical fitness played some influence over his decision.

What used to be me bugging him to join me jogging every Sunday has turned to him convincing me to consider joining a health fitness gym program.

Total Fitness Gym for me? I guess, Not Yet...

I cannot deny that a fitness gym would do wonders for my abs project. Commercial gym equipment can bolster the change I want to happen for my big ab. But as of now, budget-restraints hinder me from joining even the cheapest gym. Given that we might be leaving the vicinity of our current apartment soon, I might as well defer looking for a health fitness gym to regularly go to.

Anyway, I am making progress in my own little steps. Jogging every Sunday is becoming a habit. Also, I am beginning to get used to less rice intake. Little by little, I am gathering some self-discipline of sorts which I will really need when I put my abs project to turbo mode by deciding for a gym workout.

For the meantime, I will take advantage of the free exercise machine in MOA. But I will keep an eye for a free personal fitness workout for my abs and the cheapest total fitness gym preferably with a Mang Inasal branch nearby. LOL!!!

Free Exercise Machine @ Mall of Asia by the Bay after jogging

As scheduled, I was again able to jog by the bay in the Mall of Asia grounds. This time GF Tintin plus housemates Apol & Chippy were with me.

The goal was to improved upon last week. This time I was able to jog 3 laps from the flag area until the bungee jumping area. Baby steps you might say but improvement nonetheless.

After which, I joined Tintin in the mechanical exercise machine installed also in the grounds of Mall of Asia overlooking Manila bay. These fitness exercise machine are free to be used by the general public. A few are in need of some maintenance. A proof that people really workout in these exercise machine.

Many repetitions later, I found myself laughing my heart out during another free aerobics session some few meters away from these exercise machines.

Jog-Walk & Aerobics Fun @ MOA

Yes, I did it again today!

I was able to drag my big big ab out of bed, jog around Manila Bay at the Mall of Asia grounds, tried the free workout equipment installed there and an added bonus of some awkward aerobic/dance moves.

All accompanied by housemate Apol.

Today's jog session had some tiny progress as I was able to complete 2 straight jogging laps - from the flagposts to the bungee jumping area at the MOA grounds. (Last week was 1 1/2 with walking)

Kuya Apol, surprisingly joined me today, and convinced me to participate in the aerobics session. My awkward difficulty in doing the steps to the tune of itaktak mo had me laughing no end. While I think that it did not help shed a pound one bit, it was fun. Hope I will always have someone with to try it out. LOL!

Blogging this now, I find myself grinning at the thought that this project is really, really on its way. I even did some barbells for my biceps.

It was supposed to be a bowling night but the bowling alley was holding a tournament of sort. Nevertheless, the change of plans led me to discover an improvised arm workout.

Since Tintin and I just had dinner, we decided to while away the time hanging out in the Arcade - Tom's world. As for me, I only play 3 types in an arcade - shooting hoops, racing or spacecraft games ala-1941.

The hoops game entails, scoring 30 points to be able to continue shooting and then reach 150 points for another round. I was breathing a little heavy after the first token, not even reaching 100 points. To rest my arm, I contemplated on trying out the dance-revo but Tintin seemed like pleading me not to. Hehehe!!!

After that, I returned to shooting hoops determined to reach 150. Luckily I did. I scored 80 right in the first round and was able to reach to 150. But by that time, my right arm is kinda stiff and I am breathing heavily.

<img alt="arm workout"border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDoVuAzY0iDhA5PLIzUyL-gLa5aiS4fTOW3a1YFU6IzZcHY9q0dme3Zq7R4wWCb_5iGZSVskeJdo8bh6GamEuWQvceQLVZEfg2HFW0NrRrCTcVtuuItmOrGP9jkRkbG6_VATm7m8zi9qA/s400/doms+work+out+at+toms+world+2.jpg" width="400" />

For those looking for an arm workout, head-out to any arcade like the Tom's World. Buy at least one 5-peso token (or whatever the price of the token there) and play the shooting game until your arms get sore!

I wish I was ambidextrous so that my left arm will have the same workout. Anyway, my left hand fingers are working out for this post.

Doms Work-Out

I was supposed to be doing a deadline but ended up working out. Well, sort of. I wanted to finish that newsletter but I lack the necessary tools to do so. I just ended releasing some unwanted fats out of my body.

The workout I'm referring to isn't the professional cool-looking repetitive way of sweating out. It's more of a domestic workout commonly called cleaning the house.

Polishing the stairs with wet rags had me doing two trips going up and down the stairs to change the water on the basin I'm using.

Moving the sofa, tables and other stuffs feels like much lifting weights. Clearing the cobwebs and windows are kinda the same with stretching out.

Cleaning and arranging the shoe rack, had me stooping, good for my abs. And so is cleaning the rest room, and washing dormats. Brushing pails and slippers got my arm a good work out as well. But I forgot to use my left arm, so that isn't quite balanced.

Domestic cleanup-cum-physical workout - a perfect example of hitting two birds with one stone.

Beautiful Sunday for A Morning Jog at Manila Bay in the Mall of Asia Grounds

Today is the first Sunday of July. Sundays being off-work days are good enough reason to stay longer in bed to sleep. Not for me for today.

I was up early, even earlier than the sunrisse because me and my housemates planned to jog around the SM Mall of Asia grounds.

I was really, really excited and thankful for a beautiful Sunday morning perfect for jogging.

Honestly, jogging does not appeal to me but I admit that this form of exercise can do wonders for my current fixation - having a better-looking mid-section. When I brought up the idea a few days ago, Chippy and Apol agreed to join in.

As I tried waking them today, only Chippy was able to give up the enticing call of her bed, even bringing her Tennis gear for the added effect.

A short walk going to the SM Mall of Asia jogging area provided a perfect warm-up. Upon reaching the sea wall, overlooking Manila Bay, we separated and I started to jog. One lap from the front of SMX building up the bungee jumping area had me gasping for air and half-walk, half jog on the return lap. Passing through the hotdog stand almost made me stop and grab a quick bite.

Seeing all those people - jogging, walking, exercising or simple spending time with families - is a welcome sight. 'wished I'd brought a cam or just my CP, for photos I can post here.

After that go-around, I tried the work-out equipment set up in the MOA grounds. I wanted to do another lap but I don't want to push my sedantary-accustomed body. So, I looked out for Chippy to head back for home.

Beautiful Day indeed.
So says Derek Ramsay, another great-abs displaying hunk. He is practically talking to me. Saying that my workout regimen of breathing exercises and push-ups aren't enough.

That I should I try out century tuna because it will be good for my abs and heart.

Ms. Angel Locsin chimes in, that this delicious and Omega 3 DHA-packed century tuna is good for my mind, heart and body. Alright, I'm convinced! I sure want all that Omega 3 DHA especially those coming out of her. Quite effective indeed as my mind, heart and body are now active after seeing Ms. Locsin. Hehehe!!!

Dinner for tonight is decided. One century tuna vegetable oil, one medium-sized banana and only one serving of rice.

Am I saying then that "Tonight and every night is Century Tuna night"? Nah!

While my wallet would certainly rejoice with that, my stomach would certainly love to try out those other seafoods - Sabah Calamares, Ligo Sardines, etc - fresh from the can. :D

Pushing the Goal and more

Today, I woke up feeling light-headed, probably caused by 6-7 hours of night sleep.

While brushing, I figured I might try doing push-ups today. I remembered Sab sharing (or boasting) that her brother's secret to firm abs is 200 pushups. Of course, I retorted that I have no plans following the steps of Manny Pacquiao who I think do thousands.

Yesterday, GF Tintin also suggested push-ups and that I begin doing 5 daily until I reach 200. I am not sure why Tintin seemed to be often agreeing with Sab. So, I naturally disagreed with the two. Hehehe!!! I thought of starting with 1.

So, today I tried to doing one. Then, two, then, three and then four and finally decided to try five. See, I am under the saya or something. I do things on my own. Hehehe!!!

I am updating this entry while eating oatmeal with milk- calcium for the bones. Hehehe!!!

Standing-path after Lunch

I am writing this blog entry while standing.

In the past, I work on my computer while standing in order to shake off sleepiness more common between 1 to 3 o'clock in the afternoon.

Today I do so because I thought that it would be a good part of my abs project. I think that sitting after a hearty meal would only make my belly bigger.

Where as now, I am doing so as part of this project. I just had my lunch and strongly resisted myself eating additional rice. I figured that if I sit down immediately after eating, it wouldn't do any good in improving my big big ab. Also, I believe that doing so will aid my stomach digest the meal I just gobbled a while ago.

This morning, I was able to do my deep breathing exercises, was able to eat oatmeal for breakfast and now is standing writing this entry.

Hopefully these would all become routine. A routine that can help come closer to my goal.
