This excellent article on a list apart echoes something we’ve all been talking about for a long time - how to remove barriers. Every time you sign up to a new service or site you’re presented with a sign-up form and asked to enter the same information over and over again, site after site.

We follow lots of the new apps springing up and see lots of great examples and lots poor examples. The key seems to be in two things. Firstly showing value before you’re asked to fill in a form - ie leaving it as late as possible in the ‘new user’ process. And secondly giving some thought about what you’re asking people for - ie the minimum amount needed with as little opportunity to make mistakes as possible. A classic example is those near impossible to read captchas.

People have been talking about self distribution for filmmakers for ages, and lots have tried it. Some have failed but some have succeeded and pushed the envelope a little more by generating new ideas and models. But this has always been spoke about in the future tense, “at some point in the future the tools will be here to allow all filmmakers to do this”. But, looking around at what’s now available to filmmakers it’s obvious there are a plethora of tools and services out there. Surely, the only thing stop everyone doing this is a lack of awareness and an inevitable resistance to change.

We’re looking for Britain’s best Flash developer. Know AS2 & AS3 better than you know English? Know your way around Papervision 3D? Fancy working for us? We are no ordinary company, we are a small friendly studio making beautiful things for Film and Broadcast clients. We’re only little, so we can’t pay mega-bucks with a company car and top floor gym. But we like happy people, so we offer 35 days holiday, plus a duvet day, plus days you can work from home when you want to. We don’t work 9 to 5 and watch the clock, it’s all about structuring your own day and working when you’re at your best on projects you can get enthusiastic about and proudly show your mum. If that means rolling in mid morning and working late because you work best in the evening then that’s great. We’ve got lots of nice kit on offer like a MacBook Pro and a 23″ Apple Cinema Display, plus lots of great things you can borrow at the weekend like USB mobile broadband, SLR cameras and projectors. We also invest in decent training courses, trips to conferences, books and learning DVDs. We have offices in Shoreditch and Bournemouth and a friendly team. So, if you think you are perfect for this job, drop us some links to sites you’ve worked on and your why you think you’re the best flash developer in Britain.

The typeface Times usually creates a strong reaction of disgust in both client and designer. Being the default font in so many programs including the early web browsers and Microsoft Word means that most people are sick of it. Times is also the typeface adopted for all academic papers which means that it’s also often associated (unfairly some would say) with wordy and boring subject matter. But there are some really nice examples of design that use Times well. Coudal is a good example: http://www.coudal.com/ So I’d argue that it’s time that Times made a little bit of a come back. However, that said, our new site will use Gotham and Georgia!
