A contract of 5 years and 4 months ended these days. Were sunny days. And rainy days. But most of all, I ended up an era with a lot of challenges. Polished my knowledge. Learned new tricks. Shared victories. Along the way I’ve met nice/crazy teammates. Smart people. Many of them are now my best friends.

What awaits me? Sunny days, of course.
I wish I had more time to write to this blog - for now I have added 2 new projects to my work section (more new will come up soon). Also a new version of this site is on ‘wireframe/concept’ stage. What will happen with this one? Well, this will be a surprise. :) Stay tuned!

Well, after centuries, I had some time (little) to update my website. Life got a little crazy in these last months: lots of work and new challenges (but about these into a future post).
So, what’s new in portfolio?

The “iPhone” section.

I did a few designs for it. And here they are. I have some more but I don’t like them (too much) to be listed here.

Coming up next: why I quit ExpressionEngine and why WordPress is the new challenge. Stay tuned.

I’ve made some time for updating my work section. I will add a new category soon: iPhone App Designs. I have started building some interfaces for iPhone and iPad. So far, so good. There’s no big difference between designing for the web and for the iPhone: you have to keep in mind some sizes, some general guidelines and.. that’s all.
Anyway, I don’t have time to keep this blog updated; actually I don’t have time for any of my blogs. For example, I’m trying since 3 months ago to change the theme of one of my blogs: I designed it, I put it on .html and… no time to implement it on ExpressionEngine. And it’s so simple.

If you are a webdeveloper, this site will make your day. I’ve never read something more funny… trust me, worth wasting some time around it.

Me: “I will create a login box on your website. Once someone registers and logs in, the website will recognize who the user is and provide relevant content.”

Client: “That sounds great. However, instead of a login box Id like to use biometrics to identify the user.”

Me: “Not sure what you mean.”

Client: “When someone visits the website, I want them to be able to put their hand on the monitor. The monitor will then scan their hand to confirm who they are. I think that would be a lot more engaging. How much extra would that functionality cost?”

Me: “Several hundred million dollars.”

Client: Why are you being a wiseass? Can you do it or not?

Me: “No. Sorry. Thats a little too advanced.”

Client: “Fine. Ill try another web designer.”

I’ve found an interesting article regarding “difficult clients”. The author told the story better than I could (into a more delicate way)
I will use here some of his quotes and let you enjoy the whole article in his website.

No matter which field we belong to, our most common complaint is “My client is really difficult to handle.” And yes, being a graphic designer, I think we are the ones who mainly get to deal with the most complicated clients

And things I’ve heard a few times from my clients too:

“I have a neighbor that has a nephew that does websites too… So, I’ll go to him, I can bet he’s cheaper” (yes, everyone’s a designer nowadays)
“Our CEO likes them (boxes) right angled. Make them rounded. And why this color? Make them red…” (both CEO and Marketing person were women)

Anyway, go read this article. And for a complete experience over “the client is always right” read this one: “Ode to the amateur logo”

Passphrase

A passphrase is a sequence of words or other text used to control access to a computer system, program or data. A passphrase is similar to a password in usage, but is generally longer for added security. Passphrases are often used to control both access to, and operation of, cryptographic programs and systems. Passphrases are particularly applicable to systems that use the passphrase as an encryption key. The origin of the term is by analogy with “password”.
from Wikipedia

The best passwords are not one or two words, but are phrases that are easy for you to remember and hard for anyone else to guess. They can also be completely random symbols. A password like of random characters is basically impossible to guess. But also impossible to remember.

Use a “pass-passphrase” instead. Let’s see the difference between these two.

Password

Let’s see its definition:

A password is a secret word or string of characters that is used for authentication, to prove identity or gain access to a resource (example: an access code is a type of password). The password must be kept secret from those not allowed access. From Wikipedia

So, first of all it is a “word”. Often something like “pa5vv0rd” or something similar: one word or one word with some strange signs like “$!.,;%”. If they are above 8-10 characters, you may think it is strong enough. Wrong! Having the feeling of ‘being the owner of a secure password’ or the owner of ‘the One Ring to rule them all’ you start to use it everywhere: email account(s), forum(s) and social network sites, etc. If you do so, you can kiss good-bye to your internet identity; someone will stole it for sure.
