Starting November 5th I’ll be showing work as part of a photography exhibit fundraiser for Street Roots. I’ve been shooting Polaroid portraits of the folks who help make the paper happen, from vendors who sell it on the streets to the staff and volunteers who put in long hours at the office making Street Roots a reality. The show is a group exhibit with some incredible local photographers and will be going on for the month of November. We’ll be having an opening on the 5th, from 6-9pm, at Albina Community Bank in the Pearl as part of First Thursday. Come check out the photography and meet some of the Street Roots crew. This paper is both a concrete resource to help people in serious need and a gutsy antidote to mainstream media. Be there…

Also, my Thailand kickstarter experiment has been a resounding success - thanks to everyone who participated!

Thailand is Calling!

I'll be heading off on a 3-month photographic journey around Thailand and Southeast Asia this January. My trip will begin in Chiang Mai, home to the largest concentration of temples in Thailand, to shoot a photo series on the interaction of sacred places with modern urban settings. I've been fascinated by the urban landscape for years, as those who know my photography are aware, but I've also spent a great deal of time thinking about how the inanimate shells of our cities hold the meaning, tradition and the sacred elements of our culture. This is what I hope to explore in Chiang Mai and Thailand as a whole.

This project is more to me than just a set of photographs, it's basically my commitment to photography as a discipline, my way of devoting all the time, money and guts I can muster towards learning to support myself by doing what I love. We all need to try do that at one point in our lives, at least. This is mine. Will you help?

The deal is simple: If you help me afford my plane tickets to Thailand I'll send you signed, original, fine-art photographs from my trip.

You can find the details on the Thailand Project Kickstarter page.
A huge thank you in advance to everyone who lends a hand!

I'll be helping put on the Obscurae Photography Exhibit and Art Lottery on September 19th in Braddock, PA:

Change is underway in Braddock, Pennsylvania as groups working with and within the community bring renewed energy to a town that many wrote off. Inspired by the town’s potential for grassroots urban renewal, many artists, social entrepreneurs, community organizers, urban homesteaders and others with a pioneering spirit are using the inherent energy in Braddock to fuel their creativity. It is with this spirit that OBSCURAE views the maligned town – turning a photographic eye towards the borough’s oft-overlooked beauty and the spaces amidst the former grandeur and “urban blight” that Braddock has come to represent for many in the Pittsburgh area.

While the event is free to attend, tickets are available at www.obscuraegallery.org for $45 and will guarantee that you take home art from the show. This is a great way to help support the desperately needed revitalization work in Braddock and get a one-of-a-kind photographic piece for a great price. You don't have to be in the Pittsburgh area to participate, I'll be there and I'm willing to proxy any out-of-towners, just get in touch.
