Studio Calico Reveal | May Kit Planetarium II

Hey there, I'm back with another two of my Planetarium kit cards. The first one has a little masculine touch. I know some of you struggle with guy cards, so I always try to fit one of them in my monthly assignments with the kits. For the turquoise layer I repeatedly stamped the star trail stamp from the North Star add-on on a piece of card stock using Versamark ink, then embossed it with clear embossing powder. After everything cooled down, I used Mister Huey Ocean (from the Here+There collection) and a watercolor brush to paint over the embossed cardstock. Love the subtle gradient I could achieve.

This next card is completely neutral color-wise and I really like how it makes the gold stars look. Also, I find it's a great proof how those kits can fit any card-making style, even vintage, if you want to.

Studio Calico Reveal | May Kit Planetarium

It's that time of the month: Time for a shiny new Studio Calico kit - and it's a good one! The 6x6 paper pad is my favorite from the ones I've received so far. I went through my stash and found I'm running low on baby/toddler cards so this were the first on my list to make this month. A great opportunity to let the beautiful papers shine and leave some room to customize the cards later either with the baby's name or the age of the little one. First up, I want to show you the baby boy version:

As Cool As Berlin

Today, I'm going to switch things up a little :) No card for you! - but a mini album. Mind you, it's a super simple one, made with only a single sheet of an old Making Memories patterned paper. It's been a present for a dear old friend with whom I traveled to Berlin some time ago. Somehow, I was the only one who had brought a camera and I never gotten around to send him the photos so I thought I make him a mini album for his birthday.

I love how the closure came together. It's a simple eyelet in the cover and leather string tied up in a bow.

For a little something, I decorated the cover with a veneer camera, sprayed with a dark spray mist color to give it more contrast against the lighter colors. I had adhered it Glossy Accents and filled the "lens" part of the camera with Glossy Accents, too, so I could add a stamped die-cut circle and an epoxy dome sticker on top.

Since I don't have a printer other than the little Selphy, I had added some arrows with the location or a quote from the travel directly onto the photo in Photoshop.

As you can see, the binding is also super simple. I bought some white bookbinder's twine and stitched through the cardstock, then tied the ends together in the middle of the book.

Oh yes, I even dug out the old Tim Holtz distressing tool to roughen up the edges! I think it's still a great little detail to add to any "guy" project.

The inside back cover features a little pocket to hold ephemera like the musical ticket I tucked in here. Aaand that's it! I told you I kept it really simple - mainly because I wasn't sure how it will be received. {Oh, and it was well received :) I felt super happy when I got an excited thank you e-mail! You really never know, who appreciates your crafts, do you?}

Also to unify the overall look, I printed all my photos in black and white but I can't help show you a favorite one in color :)

It shows the Berlin Cathedral as seen from the river Spree and I just love the turquoise domed roof...

Studio Calico Spencer's Kit Reveal I

Hi there, Studio Calico's April Kit "Spencer's" is live and here are some of my cards from the kit gallery this month.

First up, my main card kit only card with a few digital files thrown in the mix. It was so fun to create that funky flower by welding some arrows in different sizes in the Silhouette Cameo software.

This (literally) little number came together because I really wanted to use the small envelopes in the new card kit add-on Americano. It measures only 2"x 3,5" and is a great size for enclosure cards.

The same idea applies to this girly version. This time using an envelope from main card kit and patterned paper from the card kit add-on. Love those tiny die-cut flags!

So that is the first part of my creations with the April kit. I will share the other projects on the blog in a few days but if you are curious you can see them all at once in my gallery together with some close-ups. Thanks for visiting! :)

Studio Calico Neverland Kit Reveal, Part II

Hi there, I'm back with part two of my Studio Calico Neverland Kit cards! The ones today have a more masculine/cool touch and are actually my favorites from the March release but see for yourself :)

This one is a card to welcome a new baby boy. I know, not very baby-ish but the new mom would kill me if I'd gone all kitschy ;-) No biggie if this is not your thing - it would probably also make a great birthday card for a little boy. The patterned papers are a mix of card kit, add-ons Tink and Lost Boys.

The little square card here came together because I couldn't part with the leftover. There's something still so cool about the negative die-cuts, isn't it? Patterned papers are all from the card kit this time.

How perfect is that Amy Tangerine paper for a card to new home owners? The card design was inspired by a card by Danielle Flanders which I lifted for a fun Creative Team challenge.

The last card for today is my personal favorite this time! I used a lot of the new collection Mister Huey's to mimic the gradient on one of the card kit patterned papers. A perfect match in colors! Also, I was beyond excited how great the Silhouette cut the thin lines from this digital cut-file.

Well, and that about wraps up my March projects! On another note, did you see that Google Reader will be shut down on July 1? Eeek! I may or may not have sign up to about every free alternative on the planet to find out what I like best. How about you? Did you use Google Reader? What's your solution to keeping up with blogs? My current favorite is Feedly by the way.

Studio Calico Neverland Kits

You know you've had some busy weeks when you want to post the second part of a blog post and just then realize part one never went live. Ahem. So without further ado, I'll present you my Studio Calico March kit projects!

I used lots of Amy Tangerine patterned papers for this as well as the card kit exclusive "Bloomer" Mini Mister Huey and bubble mask.

Another, springy, birthday card using more of the Mini Huey and mask. Just for this one, I embossed the whole mat with clear embossing powder to give it more vibrance and match the shine surface of the enamel dots.

After many very CAS cards, I felt a need for lots of layers - what better than some new Crate Paper to use for this? ;-)

How fun are the MME adhesive embellishments here? So perfect for a little boys birthday card, don't you think?

For this card, I went back to my old stamp loving days to play with a fun exclusive set in the Lost Boys add-on which was hand-drawn by SC designer Matt Wilson (@thewellkeptthing). I colored the image with a water tank pen and Mister Huey's as well as water-soluble dye-inks.

So these were my red/pink cards from the March kit. The more turquoise/masculine ones are soon to follow. Also, you should go visit the fabulous Ashley C. Newell - I had the honor of being scrap lifted by her for a creative team challenge :)

My Favorite Card of 2012

Believe it or not but I have never shared my favorite card I made in 2012! How could that happen? Honestly, I don't know but here it is:

It looks similar to a baby card I made back in May last year, just that this one is for a boy's first birthday. The parents (dear friends) asked me to make one, since they don't do crafts themselves but appreciate handmade. Their idea is it to write their son a special message each year for his birthday. Cute, right? I love it and I can't wait to make this year's - though that means that Mister Tiny is growing at rocket speed and we all want to keep him "as is". Has anyone found a solution for this yet? ;-)

Studio Calico Front Row Reveal

Hello there, how can a month go by so fast? It's crazy but February is right ahead of us and with it comes... Studio Calico's fabulous Front Row Kits! I'm not kidding when I tell you this is my favorite Card Kit to date. Want to have a look at my projects? Here ya go!

This is my main-only card. Seriously, just how cute is that rotary dial stamp in the card kit? It took me forever and a day but I just had to create a vintage phone cut-file for it.

This card uses mainly the card kit, too (I only layered some of the arrows from the Matinee Add-on). Yellow and turquoise while the weather is oh so bleak outside? Yes, please!

Now, this one is my personal favorite from the bunch! It must be the nearing Carnival season but my love for confetti is back :) The enamel dots in the card kit seamed to be such a fun addition to the paper confetti and Mister Huey sprinkles.

How about a graphic, modern take on those cupcake cards? I had left the sentiment label blank so I can use what ever I see fit but I think I've found the perfect stamp in the new Winter CHA collections *wink*.

Loved to make this one! It's a card entirely made with Add-on Matinee and the recipient is a friend who recently gave birth to twin girls. She decorated the entire nursery in line with the current nautical trend so I designed a sailboat in the Silhouette Studio to go with the theme. The triangle washi is one of my favorites in the kits this month.

Lastly, I made this little number. One of the cute office-mail style envelopes has sparked the inspiration for it. Also can you see how much I loved the grey patterned paper? It made an appearance on 5 out of 6 cards. Ha!

Studio Calico Block Party, Pt. 2

As promised earlier this week, the Block Party continues :) I played with my Cameo quite a bit for the first one. How cool is this Crooked Chevron cut?! Apart from the sentiment stamp, supplies are entirely from the Woodbrooke Road Add-on.

This next card was made with a New Year's Eve birthday child in mind. So I wanted it to be a bit sparkly without being too themed. Glitter brads anyone? They're gorgeous IRL!

Sometime during my work with the kits, I had tons of pretty paper strips on my table - far too pretty to throw them away, so I made it part of my design for the next card.

This last one was really fun to make. I saw the Sn@p pockets in the kit and immediately had the idea to turn these into tiny envelopes. The card is only 2,75" square but it's a great size for a little lunchbox note, don't you think?

It's a Block Party!

Happy New Year, everyone!! Hope you are off to a great start :) I just wanted to quickly pop in and share some of my first Design Team cards for Studio Calico with their Block Party Kits. For this month I got the card kit (of course) and I also couldn't resist the Pioneer Drive and Woodbrooke Road Add-ons.

The first one was made with just the Card Kit for this month, a few dies and Mister Huey sprinkles.

Loved how this one came together through a bit of an accident. I cut a square piece of the yellow diagonal stripe off and glued it down to my card base, then felt the proportion is way off. With another, smaller piece of the same pattern, I could form a big chevron for my background and saved the card from the junk drawer :)

My last card for todays post is more of a general purpose, all occasion one since I intentionally left the sentiment off. I'm don't usually use dark card bases but much rather go for cream, white or kraft. It's amazing to see though how much the colors pop against the dark grey background. For me, that's the beauty of the card kit - you get some supplies that you maybe wouldn't buy yourself but end up loving.

Merry Christmas to You

Hello there! Hope you had (and still have) a wonderful Christmas time! I'm currently trying not to completely fall into food coma ;-) I guess you can somehow relate...? I decided the best thing to distract myself from any more cookies is showing you a few Christmas cards and taking a looooong walk outside since the weather feels more like early spring (12 C/54 F!!) than winter anyway. But first, for the cards...
One of the "perks" of writing magazine articles is that you get to do it way before any of the current manufacturer lines hit the stores. So either you use the collections of the year before or you gotta improvise a little. I tried both with these two cards.

The star here was die-cut from a recycled packaging of clear acetate, then stamped with the Hero Arts designer woodgrain and embossed with American Crafts Zing embossing powder. The neutral doily patterned paper was from an older Crate Paper collection (Emma's Shoppe).

For this card I was very much inspired by Crate's Sleigh Ride collection. It was just presented at CHA Summer and I loved the B-side of the Rudolph paper enough to recreate a similar effect with a Christmas tree stamp I had custom made for me some time ago.

Sooo, that's it from me today! While these cards won't help you for this years Christmas cards, they may inspire you to start early building your stash for next year? Something I should clearly aim for!

Weeeee :) I was invited to join the first ever Studio Calico Card Kit team! Crazy? I know!!! Really, I have no idea how they found me but I'm so happy they did and that I'll have the opportunity to work with these amazingly talented ladies :-) Also I have already had the chance to work with their soon to be released January 2013 Card Kit this week. Falling Leaves

I know, I wanted to show you pictures of the workshop weekend but then, in a matter of just a few days, we went from 24°C (75 °F) with beautiful autumn weather and colorful leaves to -1 °C (30 °F) with snow flakes softly dancing in the air this morning. High time to blog another autumn card before it's dated...

This card was again for a birthday card swap I have going with a bunch of other German bloggers. Hope you like it! Now, what about you? Do still enjoy some warm days or did the snow hit the floor in your neck of the woods, too? Fun fact: I didn't roll the shutters down completely last night. When I opened my eyes and saw the white flakes, my brain processed this first as... confetti! :D See, I'm so not ready for this!

Weekend Crop

Oh boy, it's hard to go back to blogging when you've just let it slide a bit. I spent this past week in a whirlwind and still have things to put away from the crop I mentioned in my last post. The OCDer (or should I rather say CDOer?) in me goes crazy over this, especially since it's already two weekends ago... Nevertheless we had a blast!! :)

As always when something is going to happen, I forgot to take a camera along - except for that one day it was explicitly mentioned on the supply list. Luckily, someone shared this group shot of (almost) all participants via Dropbox.

More pictures to come in one of my next posts. Meanwhile, I leave it to you to guess where I am. Protip: I do not look like a sunflower IRL ;-)

Hello everyone, how's it going? Originally, I had planned to share a simple little gift wrap this weekend but than it dawned on me... this is just not the appropriate thing to do for a card-maker on World Card Making Day, right? Thus, a fresh new card it is :)

I think this is a fun combination with the elegant rhinestones and the rustic woodgrain patterns.

So, how do you spend today? Will you be making some cards? I sure hope to dive into my stash since the next week will be all about scrapbooking for me! I'll be attending some live workshops - one on Monday evening and the others covering all of next weekend. I'm all giddy with excitement already since two of the weekend workshops will be taught by no other than the Amy Tan :) Wish me luck so I don't disgrace the card-making world in front of the awesomely talented ladies that will be present.

Farewell {mini album + card}

I get tons of e-mails every day at work and I'm sure you do, too. Many of them are just for info (or what I call business spam) and go pretty much straight into the recycle bin. And yet, sometime in summer, there was one of these e-mails that instantly caught my eye. The subject line contained a familiar name, the name of a dear colleague, and the e-mail was sent to give a heads-up that the person has given notice :(

Fast-forward, her last day with the company happens to be this week. Eeek! So, what's a crafty girl gotta do? Of course making a farewell mini album and card so she never gets to forget us and to wishing her all the best for her new adventures :)

I prepared and embellished the pages so that fifteen of her closest coworkers each had a double page for their photos and journaling. Some of them took it further and glued a favorite recipe down or even hand-drew a picture.

With so many personal notes, I hope you understand I won't show you the inside pages en detail. However, before I wrote into the album, I took a picture of part of my double page:

Of course, there is also a card to greet her right from the desk on her last day.

Oh, BOY!

Hi everyone, how's it going in your part of the world? Now that summer is officially over we're blessed with beautiful, sunshiny weather :) Also, you may have seen it already on Instagram - I spent this last weekend of summer with Nina at her brother's (and his girlfriends') home. And what a nice weekend it was! We had tickets for a BOY concert on Friday and were spoiled with the loveliest hosts, yummy food and a city tour by bike... and of course, I forgot to take a proper camera along. D'oh! iPhone to the rescue ;-)

Luckily, Nina had a camera in her bag! She has some of the photos on her blog, as well as a cute, altered frame she made for her brother's birthday. By the way, while the two ladies of BOY gave their last concert in Germany for this year, you can still see them in France, Belgium, the UK, Denmark etc. over the next few weeks. Worth to save up your pennies, I dare say :) Now, you won't let me go without something crafty, right? So how about this little summer birthday card?

I like these dangling loose ends of thread lately as well as the vellum. There's something delicate and soft about it... Anyhow, how did you spent the last summer weekend? These ever inquiring minds need to know ;)

Trend Spotting

Despite the great tips and some very cool samples from Lisa and Kelly in their Studio Calico Trendspotting Class this week, I'm not on friendly terms with the neon trend (yet). Still, I wanted to make something and thought I'd rather go for a trend that I already love - woodgrain :)

I made this card on request for a colleague whose Swiss friends got married this last weekend. It seems the bride likes handmade and also makes things herself. Love when my cards fall into appreciative hands :)

some weeks ago, i started this on my former blog as a lightweight kind of project life. i really hope you like them as much as i do since these little currents will make an appearance here, too. so, here you go:

location: couch
watching: gangs of new york.
drinking: water
eating: cookies, but still craving the above :)
wearing: sweat pants. the notable thing is: i wore hot pants today. me! which basically means that despite the super hot weather (around 35°C / 95°F here), hell must be freezing over. especially since the only pair i own is from when i was a teenager. and they. still. fit.
needing: a hair cut. still.
looking forward: to a new trendspotting lesson w/ studio calico. we'll learn about neon tomorrow.
